Moving Right Along By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Commuting. Whether by train, plane or automobile, it has the potential to be tedious, inconvenient and highly frustrating. For many years, I was fortunate to have a very short drive to work, bypassing Long Island’s fine highways and parkways – and all the joys they bring. (Yes, that was sarcasm.) This last year has more than made up for it. Case in point: Just the other morning, I was cruising on the Southern State when I passed one of those helpful overhead signs alerting you to any traffic

delays you might encounter up ahead. “Traffic Moving Well” it said. Wonderful. A few exits later, dead stop. No flashing lights, no sirens, no accidents in sight. Inching along, but why? Oh but there it was, way up ahead, the unmistakable orange cone – construction. Three lanes merging into one – no warning, no signs, not a human worker in sight… just a flashing arrow instructing the cars miles up ahead to start moving over. Perfect. Of course, even in such a situation when clearly no one is going anywhere fast, don’t think the drivers’ level of courtesy increases by even

the slightest bit. No, the vast majority of Long Islanders would rather speed up to the bumper of the car in front of them than let another vehicle merge in between. And so we wait, vainly attempting to pick a safe spot to sneak in. And so a 25-minute commute turns into 45 for no justifiable reason. Two lanes closed, an endless line of orange barricades… but no workers, no work underway, nothing. Just chaos and confusion and road rage of the most uniquely New York variety. Good thing we have those trustworthy overhead signs to guide the way.

Jeff, a 46 yearold, non-smoker, has been fighting Lung Cancer for the last four years and was diagnosed in the summer of 2010 while in training for a triathlon. Submitted By Michael Sceiford - Edward Jones Port Jefferson Congress has designated the third week in October as National Save for Retirement Week - which means it’s a good time to think about your own retirement savings strategies. Ensuring that you have enough money to support your chosen retirement lifestyle is certainly important. Unfortunately, many of your fellow Americans have apparently not done enough in the way of building retirement savings to ease their minds. Consider these figures, taken from the Employee Benefit Research Institute’s 2013 Retirement Confidence Survey: • Forty-nine percent of those surveyed said they are not confident about being able to afford a comfortable retirement. • Just 46% of survey respondents say they and/or their spouse have even tried to calculate how much money they will need to live comfortably in retirement. What steps can you take to gain confidence in your ability to retire in the manner you have envisioned? Here are a few suggestions: • Envision your retirement lifestyle. At what age do you want to retire? When you retire, do you plan to travel or stay close to home and pursue your hobbies? Will you do some parttime work or consulting? It’s important to identify your retirement goals and then, as best as possible, estimate how much they will cost. Once you know what your retirement goals look like, you’ll be able to shape a strategy for achieving them. • Contribute as much as you can afford to your retirement accounts. No matter what your retirement goals may be, you’ll help yourself by contributing as much as you can possibly afford to your IRA and your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. (At a minimum, put enough into your 401(k) to earn your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered.) And if you reach the point where you can “max out” on these plans, look for other tax-advantaged investments to which you can contribute. • Invest for growth. To help you reach your goals, you’ll want to include a reasonable percentage of growth-oriented vehicles in your retirement accounts. The exact percentage will depend on your risk tolerance and your specific objectives, but it’s important to have that growth potential. Keep in mind, though, that investing in growth-oriented vehicles involves

This year, dozens of teams are striving to raise $140,000 to support promising gene therapy, stem cell, and pharmaceuticalbased research that could save and even restore

Blinding retinal degenerative diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa, macular degeneration and Usher syndrome affect more than 10 million Americans, but the Foundation Fighting Blindness is funding cutting-edge studies toward preventions, treatments and cures. “Since the inception of our VisionWalk 7 years ago,

Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center’s Annual Ball, An Evening At The Copacabana, was held Friday, September 27th at Crest Hollow Country Club. More than 400 guests joined the 2013 Gala Honorees, West Islip residents Lorraine and John Pace, well known throughout the region for their commitment in the fight against breast cancer. The Ball raised more than $425,000 to support The Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation, with proceeds to benefit the Cancer Center at Good Samaritan Hospital. “Starting with the inception of the hospital’s Breast Health Center 20

No matter how you slice it, picking a college is the culmination of your high school career. As a senior, the pressure associated with selecting where I will spend the next four years of my life is truly right around the corner. I’m almost done with all of my tests, essays and applications, but even if I receive that acceptance letter in the mail, how do I know where I truly want to attend? After acceptances, denials and waitlists, a student is still left with the daunting task of finding out which college truly fits him or her. There are many factors that play into choosing

where you would be the most happy. Are you an athlete? A study freak? A party animal? Countless variables can have an impact on both your social and psychological well being. Before you enroll in that Ivy League school, take a look around, because you may feel the urge to select a school that actually wants you. For instance, if a school of lesser prestige is offering you a scholarship, you might feel the urge to go there instead of a top tier college. Before you enroll anywhere, make it a point to visit! If you can, check out the prospective

college because, for all you know, you could hate it. If visiting is not an option, at least talk with a current student or alumni. No one can give you more insight than someone who is already in that situation. Attend a College Night! On October 2nd, St. John’s hosted its annual College Fair, with nearly 200 present. Showing up to one of these not only gives you a broader glance at many universities, but the up-close and personal time with an Admissions officer can be priceless. Feel it out, because this decision is undoubtably the most important one you will make thus far.

Other participating bus systems included City of Long Beach, Central New York Regional Transportation Authority, Ulster County Area Transit,

Association International Bus Roadeo scheduled for May 2-6, 2014 in Kansas City, MO. Piegari has many 2nd and 3rd place Roadeo finishes in his long career, but this is his first New York State win. Robert Herbst. Operators from across the state qualified for the state championship by performing well in their regional Roadeo’s. Drivers compete in a series of events, including conducting proper pretrip vehicle inspections and knowledge of industry standard safety habits. Finally, operators test their driving abilities in a timed

competition through a marked course. The course, marked off with traffic cones, featured 10 simulated road conditions or maneuvers that operators encounter on a daily basis. Maneuvers such as turns, stops, and handling serpentine courses highlighted the participants driving skills while operating a 40-foot Orion bus.

Waterfowl Program The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is holding its 16th Annual Youth Waterfowl Program, open to young hunters on Long Island ages 12 to 15, on November 2nd and November 9th and 10th, Commissioner Joe Martens announced today. The program is a collaboration with the New York Conservation Officers Association; Suffolk County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation; Shikar Safari Club International; Ducks Unlimited; and South Shore Waterfowlers Association. The Youth Waterfowl Program, an instructional course, is set for November 2nd. Youth Waterfowl Days, which are specially designated hunting days, are set for November 9th and 10th. The Youth Waterfowl Program is a special event to help junior hunters prepare for and participate in the Youth Waterfowl Days. The program includes instruction in: · Hunting ethics and regulations · Waterfowl identification · Firearms safety review · Retriever and decoy use · Cold water survival and boating safety · Trap shooting Certified sportsman education instructors, as

well as DEC environmental conservation officers (ECOs), will guide participants through the program and help youth hunters become part of the long tradition of waterfowl hunting on Long Island. All new applicants must attend an instructional day at Hubbard County Park in Flanders on November 2nd, which will qualify them for the option of hunting at Hubbard County Park in Flanders or Southaven County Park in Yaphank on November 9th, and anywhere hunting is allowed on November 10th. Participants must be 12 to 15 years of age by November 9th, have completed a hunter education course by November 2nd, possess a junior (small game) hunting license by November 9th and be registered with the Harvest Information Program (HIP). The Lupus Alliance of LIQ, home of the WalkAlong for Lupus, Long Island’s first and longest running lupus walk, will be celebrating their 20th Anniversary Walk-Along for Lupus on October 20th. The walk will be held in Eisenhower Park, Field #6, with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m., and the walk beginning at 10 a.m., rain or shine. The minimum registration donation is $20; for a $50 donation, the walker also receives a T-shirt, a for a donation of $500 or more, the walker receives a Visa Gift Card. The 4th Annual Over 50 Fair took place on Sunday, September 29th at the Melville Marriott to a crowd of over 600. The one-day expo was once again organized as a “celebration of life on Long Island” for people over 50. To make it even easier for attendees to participate in this year’s event, there was free valet parking as well as free scooter rentals for those who needed one, compliments of Patriot Mobility Inc. “The Over 50 Fair is part health and wellness fair, part conference and part activities and lifestyle expo,” said Fair Director Barbara Kaplan, who will once again organize Long Island’s popular All Kids Fair on April 27th. With 30 classes covering a variety of disciplines, there was “something for everyone at the Over 50 Fair,” she added. Some of the speakers were new this year, but many old favorites returned. Howard Robertson, a retired warden from the New York City Department of Correction, spoke to Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students in grades 9-12 as part of his Airtight Solutions AntiViolence Program. The presentation provided audiences with an in-depth look at the consequences of making bad decisions and how to navigate one’s life towards success. “Don’t let your story be your excuse,” said Robertson, who shared a personal account of his traumatic upbringing. “Everyone has something in their life that they are dealing with, but do not use that as an excuse to not do the right thing.”

Robertson offered students a direct glimpse into life in prison, as he had care custody and control over “New York’s most notorious drug kingpins, murderers and gang members” during his career. The objective of the discussion was to provide the listeners with relevant information and sound advice that they can use to motivate themselves and others to avoid major pitfalls in life. “As teens, you’re not always responsible for getting knocked down in life,” he said. “However, you are responsible for picking yourself back up. Tough times don’t last forever, but tough people do.” During his presentation,

Robertson covered the topics of gangs, drugs and alcohol, suicide and bullying. He strongly encouraged students to focus on their education as just one of the ways they can become the best version of themselves. He discussed the concept of association/assimilation and how it suggests that an individual becomes like the people and things with which they surround themselves. “In real life you can pick your own team by choosing who you identify with,” said Robertson. “Be a great friend, but also make sure that you are doing what is best for you and for your future.”

On Thursday, September 26th, the Brookhaven Business Advisory Council (BBAC) hosted its Ninth Annual Building Business In Brookhaven Expo at Town Hall and broke all previous records for participating vendors and attendees. The event, which attracted over 450 local business people, and more than 90 vendors, focused on business networking and included a trade show with booths featuring local, regional and national companies that service businesses in Brookhaven Town. The event was co-sponsored by the Town of Brookhaven Industrial Development Agency (IDA). Girl Scout Day On September 21st, the Long Island Game Farm hosted the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County at the 5th Annual Girl Scout Day. Children joined Girl Scout Troops from Suffolk County in trying science experiments using household items, like forming a cyclone, surface tension, chemical reactions, and games that tested people’s knowledge of marine biology. The Girl Scouts also explored the Game Farm as they visited

different exotic animals and went on the fun, exciting rides. In addition, the Girl Scouts had the opportunity to do arts and crafts, and science-themed projects to emphasize the importance of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Strong Island Rolls On Saturday night at the World Gym Arena in East Setauket, Strong Island Derby Revolution (SIDR) picked up another win in their 4-2 season as they took on the Jerzey Derby Brigade (JDB) of Morristown, NJ. The teams first met in May 2012 when SIDR lost against the Punishers 192-92 in their first season. Aggressive from the first whistle, both teams struggled with penalties. One JDB jammer’s trip to the box led to a 19 point power jam by jammer #3

Trinity that helped set SIDR up for an 88-45 lead at halftime. The jammer is the point scorer for each team in “jams” typically lasting less than two minutes. In the second half SIDR controlled the pace of the game, forcing NJ into maintaining a faster speed. The penalties continued, leading to the fouling out of #13, SIDR co-captain and jammer, known as Jenny from the Block. Still, the SIDR jammer lineup continued to keep JDB off the board, maintaining

Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilman Tim Mazzei have announced that residents and small businesses can clean out their file cabinets, attics, and storerooms and safely discard old letters, medical forms, and financial records during the Town’s fall shredding events on October 25th and 26th. This year, residential shredding will be done at Town Hall and will include an e-waste drop off allowing for old electronics to be safely collected and then recycled. Small business shredding will once again be done at the Town’s Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) located at the Brookhaven Landfill. The schedule is as follows: • Small Businesses: Only Friday, October 25th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Town’s Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) at the Brookhaven Landfill located at 350 Horseblock Road in Brookhaven. Paper can be brought in boxes or bags. Documents can remain stapled together, but paper clips and other metal must be removed along with any other contaminants such as rubber bands. The Suffolk County Historical Society was gifted with a Mobile Museum from the American Museum of Natural History. The Winnebago is handicapped accessible and outfitted with handson archeological and local cultural displays. It is able to travel to schools throughout Suffolk County and has a teacher on board to educate the students. The Society’s upcoming exhibit, Back to the Future, features contemporary artists’ work, which reflects elements of the Society’s permanent collection. The show will run from October 18th through November 23rd. Suffolk County Legislator Lynne C. Nowick, Chair of the Legislature’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Committee, recently met with Kathryn Curran, executive director of the Suffolk County Historical Society, to discuss the Society’s goals and upcoming projects. Since it was first settled in 1640, Suffolk County has experienced a rich history. The Society is working diligently to establish itself as one of the major anchors for downtown Riverhead by positioning itself as a bookend of the planned main Street cultural corridor linking the other art venues, theater, historic district and other points of interest. “The Suffolk County Historical Society contains a wealth of history, documents, artifacts and collections. It is a gem in the Riverhead community and a must visit destination for all of Long Islanders,” said Suffolk County Legislator Lynne C. Nowick
