The weekend kicked off with a student pep rally on Friday afternoon, and school spirit carried over to the community carnival held before the big football game on Saturday. Pirates & Princesses In honor of the end of its season - and the long Columbus Day Weekend, the Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo is hosting its second annual Pirates and Princesses Treasure Hunt Sunday, October 9th, from 12 to 2 p.m. During the event, children will be treated to a scavenger hunt around the park, which will culminate in a bounty of snacks and prizes and a meet-and-greet with the

Long Island Game Farm’s own pirate and princess. All children will receive a pirate map with clues to specially marked destinations around the park. Upon solving each clue, participants should visit that location and have their special treasure map stamped by one of our zookeepers or Long Island Game Farm staff. Once a participant earns five stamps, they should journey along to the place where X

marks the spot in order to claim their prize as well as cookie and juice treats. Though guests are encouraged to wear outfits inspired by the event (be it a princess-style ball gown, a prince-style suit or your favorite pirate attire), costumes are not required to participate. Additionally, while general admission is required to enter the park, there is no additional cost to join the event. “The Pirates and

Princesses Treasure Hunt was the perfect ending to our season last year,” says Melinda Novak, Vice President/Co-Owner, Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo. “Though we will continue to be open for a few more days post-event, we are looking forward to hosting all buccaneers and having them celebrate the end of 2016 with us! It’s a great way for families to spend an afternoon.”

The Long Island Game Farm features interactive animal experiences, where guests can get up-close and personal with their favorite animals. New to the Game Farm this year was the Giraffe Encounter, where guests hand-fed the park’s resident giraffe, Clifford, and learned fun facts from the staff. In addition to Clifford, guests once again had the chance to hand-feed the LIGF’s camels, which this year feature a new addition

and naming contest, and bottle-feed goats and other baby animals in the nursery. The Long Island Game Farm – Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo is open through October 12th, after which time it will close for the season. The park will reopen in May 2017. Welcome to October, the month when thoughts turn from late summer sunshine and seaside walks to apples and pumpkins and all things autumn. ‘Tis the season before THE season of holiday madness, that lull when – aside from Halloween – one can simply enjoy the crisp air while taking a hay ride with friends, navigating a corn maze or picking up some local produce at the neighborhood farm stand. Personally, I am a girl of summer, basking in

the glow of sunsets and days spent at the beach, of aimless wandering along our many shores in search of hidden oases of beauty. But autumn has its own special unique charm as well. There is nothing quite like feeling the crunch of freshly fallen leaves under your boots, of cuddling up with a good book and some hot apple cider donuts. This is the time of respite, that period of transition from long golden days to chilly evenings, the calm before the storm of feasting with family, of decking the halls

and shopping ‘til your heart’s content, for loved ones and yourself. Come November, its full-steam ahead, and the novelty of the season tends to wear off a bit amidst the chaos. Now is the time to treasure. So take October, enjoy. Take in the foliage, absorb your surroundings, snap a few photos for your autumn album, catch up with old friends over coffee – do whatever it is to soak in the season while it’s here. Because, before we know it, we’ll be on to the next one.

Strength for Life Strength for Life would like to thank Barbara Larrea and the World Gym Wantagh for organizing “Cycle for Strength,” held September 24th at Mulcahy’s, the third epic two-hour event, with participants invited to ride in honor of a cancer warrior. Enormous effort was put forth by Ms. Larrea to organize this event and by the Team and Family of World Gym Wantagh. Over $50,000 was raised by this generous community, and the sponsors of the event. In the past three years,

the Wantagh World Gym has held this event and chose Strength for Life as a beneficiary with the total raised over $110,000. Strength for Life relies on our fundraising events to provide these services and World Gym Wantagh relieved a heavy burden during these years. This year, each of the 92 riders was asked to fundraise $350 for the event and nearly all exceeded their goal. The energy at Mulcahy’s was palpable as the riders entered, claimed their bike, bought raffles and prepared for the

experience. Barbara Larrea, on center stage, led the riders on a fantastic journey, combining her heartfelt, inspiring coaching, fabulous sounds and personalized World Gym video. Beloved Ward Melville High School mathematics teacher Pam O’Brien has been selected as an Empire State Excellence in Teaching Award winner and was recently presented with a check for $5,000 by New York’s Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul during a surprise, in-class, ceremony. “On behalf of the school district, I am extremely proud that the extraordinary talents of one of our district’s teachers has once again been recognized at the state level,” said Superintendent of Schools Cheryl Pedisich, who was present during the ceremony. “Ms. O’Brien instills a love of mathematics in each of her students and her passion for teaching is evident the moment you enter her classroom.”

The award recognizes educational leaders who “exemplify the professional work of thousands of outstanding, progressive teachers and innovative educators striving to attain New York standards and success for all of their students.” The monetary grant will be used for opportunities for continued learning and professional endeavors. Ms. O’Brien, who has previously been named a New York State Master Teacher, is a well-versed educator who has been teaching for the past 28 years. She currently teaches Math 10 Honors Theory and Advanced Placement statistics. She holds a Bachelors of Arts in mathematics from SUNY Binghamton and a master’s degree in

Education from Dowling College. Ms. O’Brien, along with her husband and three children, are all graduates of Ward Melville. “I feel honored that I have been given the opportunity to teach in the community that I call home,” said Ms. O’Brien. “I work with an awesome group of colleagues, as well as an extremely supportive administration who have always encouraged and supported my endeavors. Most of all, I have been fortunate to work with students who constantly inspire me to be an even better teacher. Receiving this award will allow me to keep growing professionally so that I can keep bringing new ideas and innovations to the classroom.”

Scholar Athlete School Miller Place High School was recently recognized by New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHAA) as a Scholar Athlete School for each of its varsity teams earning a grade point average of a 90 percent or higher during the 20152016 school year. With a total of 794 members of NYSPHAA, Miller Place was one of only thirtytwo school districts to be distinguished for excellent grades. “This award is a true testament to the diligence

and dedication of each of our student athletes and coaches of Miller Place,” said Dr. Marianne F. Cartisano, Superintendent of Miller Place School District. “Our high school students should be proud of the great decisions they are making to become successful students on and off the field and future well-rounded adults upon graduation.” At the end of each sports season, NYSPHAA seeks to distinguish scholar athlete teams whose players excel both on the field and in the

classroom. In order to be considered for the award, varsity team players must receive a 90 percent from 75 percent of its players or more. Seven of Miller Place High School’s varsity teams were awarded, including the boy’s baseball, boy’s lacrosse, boy’s tennis, girls’ softball and both the boy’s and girl’s track and field teams. The girl’s lacrosse team held a grade point average of 97.09 percent, the highest of Miller Place’s honored sports teams.

On September 20th, NY State Assemblyman Dean Murray, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilman Michael Loguercio held a press conference to announce that the Assemblyman has secured $100,000 in State funding for improvements to the

Town’s Eagle Estates Park in Medford. In addition, the Town has been awarded a $300,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) that will be used for the park improvements. The CDBG provides federal funding under the Suffolk County

Consortium. The park improvements are expected to include a new playground and basketball courts, a pergola, new fencing, irrigation and landscaping. The start date for work is still to be determined.

Patriot pride was at an all-time high on September 24th when Ward Melville High School in the Three Village Central School District celebrated homecoming 2016. The weekend kicked off with a student pep rally on Friday afternoon and school spirit carried over to the community carnival held before the big football game on Saturday. Entertaining booths and displays created by representatives at each of the district’s

schools and several high school organizations, blanketed the backfield at Ward Melville. Carnival attractions included spirited games, facepainting stations, bounce houses and an obstacle course. Before the varsity football team took to the field, students from each of the district’s elementary schools proudly entered the stadium to display their submissions to this year’s banner contest. This year’s contest was

themed “50 Years Strong” in recognition of the district celebrating its 50th anniversary. During half time, Minnesauke Elementary School was announced as the winner of the competition. When the hometown Patriots took on the Patchogue-Medford Raiders, their weeks of preparation were evident. After a strong start, the Patriots earned a homecoming win and ended the game with a score of 35-22.

Celebrating Peace The Port Jefferson School District celebrated the International Day of Peace on September 28th through activities sponsored by the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Student Organization. As part of the observance, Student Organization members produced a peace video featuring elementary, middle and high school students speaking about

what peace means to them. The video was viewed by all students during their homeroom periods. The Student Organization decorated school hallways, lockers and classrooms with messages of peace written on sticky notes. The day’s activities also included songs of peace performed by the high school chamber choir during

lunch periods, and instead of bells to mark the end of periods, peace songs played over the schools’ public address system. To further the message of peace, all teachers led discussions on the United Nations’ peace goals and art students participated in the Shanti Fund’s annual peace calendar art contest.

On Friday, September 23rd, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, in partnership with the Stony Brook Trauma Center, hosted the first Suffolk County Senior Health and Wellness Expo. The event was a part of Senior Center Month and National Falls Prevention Awareness Day. It took place at the Rose Caracappa Senior Center in Mount Sinai and attracted over 150 residents. “I am proud to partner with the Stony Brook Trauma Center on this great event to help raise awareness about the importance of falls

prevention and the many senior programs available throughout Suffolk County,” said Legislator Anker. At the event, Stony Brook nurses and physical therapy students conducted fall risk assessments. Then, attendees were given information about different balance programs and measures to take to prevent homes falls. The event also included representatives from the Suffolk County Office for the Aging, Suffolk County Department of Health Services, Suffolk County Department of Social Services, Suffolk County Fire Rescue and

Emergency Services, Retired Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP), AARP, Rite Aid, and U Fitness. The Suffolk County Police were also present for Operation Medicine Cabinet, a drug take-back program that allows resident to safely dispose of unwanted or expired medications, and the Suffolk County Sheriffs were available to create emergency identification cards for attendees. Budget Hearings Set The Suffolk County Legislature has released its public hearing schedule for the 2017 Operating Budget. All hearings and committee meetings will be held at the Williams H. Rogers Legislature Building, 725 Veterans Memorial Highway in Hauppauge. The first two public hearings will be held on Wednesday, October 5th, at 2:30 p.m. and Tuesday, October 18th, at 11:30 a.m. The Operating Budget Committee meetings are scheduled for Tuesday,

October 18th and Wednesday, October 19th. The Legislative Budget Review Office will provide a report to the Legislature on Friday, October 14th, and the deadline for filing amendments is Friday, October 21st. Budget amendments will be distributed for review on Friday, October 28th and an Operating Budget Meeting for consideration of Amendments/Adoption of Budget is scheduled for Wednesday, November 9th at 1 p.m. in Riverhead. Outreach Support On Saturday, October 8th at Jones Beach, Outreach and the John Brower, Jr. Foundation will host the 2nd annual 5K Walk to raise funds and awareness about substance and alcohol abuse in New York, bringing the community together while walking for a cause. The event honors the memory of John Brower, Jr., who died in 2014 of an opiate overdose at age 25. Proceeds from the walk will support Outreach, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping teens and adults fight drug and alcohol addiction. The Brower family formed the John Brower, Jr. Foundation to heighten awareness about substance abuse and to help raise funds to end the drug epidemic that has had an adverse effect on Long Island. After being introduced to Outreach shortly after their son’s passing, the Browers

were impressed by the organization’s dedication to help those struggling with addiction. They decided to target all the group’s fundraising for the agency. To date, the Brower family has donated more than $37,000 to Outreach. “The Brower family is one of too many Long Island families who have experienced the heartbreak of opiate addiction,” said Kathleen Riddle, president of Outreach. “We join the Browers in their mission to do all we can to raise awareness for teens and young adults so additional families do not have to lose a loved one to substance abuse. The Brower family has been tremendously generous and devoted to the cause. We are enormously thankful for their support.” “It’s been more than two years since we lost our son,” said John Brower, Sr., “but his memory is with us every day as is our

determination to continue fighting addiction. Strength for Life (SFL), is a non-profit dedicated to providing free exercise programs designed to enhance the recovery process of persons with a cancer diagnosis throughout Long Island communities. Services provided include educating cancer patients, caregivers and the medical community on the benefits of incorporating

exercise into the treatment regimen and its effect on reducing the risk of certain cancers and re-occurrences, along with improving bodily functional activities. Programs are conducted by certified cancer exercise specialists in a group setting and held at 11 accessible locations throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties. Over the past seven years, SFL has reached more than 1,700

patients and survivors. World Gym Wantagh hosts classes twice a week, and they are forever grateful for the beautiful room and welcoming staff. Many survivors are initially intimidated to go back into the gym environment. Their intent is to empower them to embrace the “new normal” and feel confident enough to go back to their previous activities. Learning of the astronomical copays of a
