Gwen Stefani: Just A Girl About to Take Over Las Vegas By Allison Kugel

Gwen Stefani spent her childhood and adolescence in Anaheim, California, a suburban girl living a stone’s throw from Disneyland. It was her older brother, Eric, who founded No Doubt, that would help Stefani make her way into the musical limelight with their 1995 breakout album, Tragic Kingdom. The band’s unique sound coupled with Stefani’s platinum blonde hair, red lips and punk rock fashion, brought the singer to Rockstar status in the 1990s. Her first solo album, 2004’s Love. Angel. Music. Baby. and L.A.M.B. fashion label, catapulted her into the music and style icon stratosphere in the early 2000s. Follow up albums like 2006’s The Sweet Escape and No Doubt’s 2012 reunion album, Push and Shove capped off two decades of non-stop recording and touring for the Grammy-winning artist. This summer, the hitmaking mom of Kingston, 11, Zuma, 9, and Apollo, 4, is preparing to embark on her Las Vegas Residency at Zappos Theatre at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino. It’s called, what else? Gwen Stefani: Just A Girl – an homage to her first single to make the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. I sat down with Gwen to discuss this new chapter in her life.

Gwen Stefani: As a mom, if you look at my touring for the last ten years, I haven’t really toured. In the past, I did tour for seven years. It’s hard with the kids, because they’re in school and I’m not home schooling. I did my last tour because I had this unexpected life crisis and then the music came pouring out of me from

Allison Kugel: What does performing live give you, personally and energetically? Gwen Stefani: Being on stage for me, I always forget how much it’s a part of who I am. I’ve done it for my whole life, pretty much. I always think I don’t want to do it. I always think it’s fine if I never do it again. Then when I get on stage, even when I’m sound checking, I’m like, “Oh My God, I love this!” I love my music, I love being up there, I love the attention and I love being able to share that love with people and get that exchange. I don’t understand why I like it so much. Allison Kugel: It feeds your soul. You’re connecting with source and you’re in a zone. Gwen Stefani: It’s my gift. It’s what I’m here for. I’m obviously at the end of my journey of being a musician… Allison Kugel: Why would you say that? Gwen Stefani: Well because of my age, and I’ve been doing it for thirty something years. It’s perfect for me to be able to do a Las Vegas show, because not only does it work for me as a mom, but it also works creatively. It’s a new challenge. It’s going to be a way to express myself and do my whole catalog of music that defines every single period in my life.

Allison Kugel: And your audience is going to get a more intimate experience with you than they would in a stadium setting. Gwen Stefani: It is a much smaller audience than I’m used to, under five thousand people. It’s going to be so different and that’s something I need. When you’ve toured for however many years I have, it’s super awesome, but let’s do something new! That’s why even doing The Voice for the last couple of years was so inspiring for me. I think everybody wants something challenging and new to look forward to. Allison Kugel: You went to see Jennifer Lopez’s Las Vegas show, All I Have. I’m assuming the two of you discussed her Las Vegas Residency. Did she give you any advice? Gwen Stefani: I’ve always looked up to Jennifer in the sense that we’re exactly the same age, and I remember when No Doubt was coming out and she hadn’t done Jenny from The Block yet, but she had that song out, Waiting for Tonight. At the time I was working with Prince and he started comparing me and Jennifer, and at that time I didn’t even see how I was in the same category with her. She was Jennifer Lopez and I was in a band called No Doubt (laughs). But now here we both are doing these residencies all these years later. She’s always invited me to her kids’ birthday parties and things like that. She is a crazy worker. I cannot believe how much she works! Allison Kugel: It doesn’t seem human, right? Multiple television shows, Las Vegas Residency, albums… Gwen Stefani: I know. I don’t understand it. Going to see her, I was studying the production of her show. The show was incredible, and she works so hard on stage. It was so inspiring to see… and scary! When I came backstage to talk to her afterwards, she comes out of the dressing room looking like a Barbie Doll. She was breathtaking on stage, but when you see her up close, it’s like, “What?! It’s not possible. You are so gorgeous!” She was just so glamorous. We talked for awhile and she was like, “Yeah, I’ve just done 100 shows…” And I’m like, “Whoa, that’s a lot of shows!” (Laughs) And she still has forty more to go. She’s really enjoyed it, but she said it is challenging. Allison Kugel: The title of your Las

Vegas show, Just A Girl, is the title of one of your biggest hits, but it has a double meaning for you. You’re always saying, “I’m just a girl from Orange County…” Is that your way of keeping yourself grounded? Gwen Stefani: Honestly, I think if you really knew me or saw my family and how I grew up, I am 100% the same person I have always been. When I wrote that song, Just A Girl, I was twenty-five years old, going to college, still living at my parent’s house, and I was very naïve. I was driving one day and I’m thinking, “Wow! I really have a different position in this world, being that I’m a female.” Allison Kugel: Has Blake Shelton (Stefani’s boyfriend of three years) had creative input with this Las Vegas show? Gwen Stefani: Obviously he’s my best friend, so I’m bouncing stuff off him all the time. He’s one of those people in my life that’s super supportive and gets me motivated. There’s a whole bunch of songs about him in the show. Like anybody, with their best friend, we share everything together. Allison Kugel: What’s your routine before you step out on stage? Do you pray? Do you meditate? How do you gear up to give your best performance? Gwen Stefani: I don’t meditate. I’m a prayer. I pray, but first I do my makeup (laughs). My makeup is huge for me. Putting on my makeup and getting ready, there is a kind of meditation in the preparation. And the praying for me is really important. We do a group prayer circle. When I think about how ordinary I’ve always been, and to think that I’ve created all these songs, I don’t know where they

come from. I always think that it’s got to be a channeling, and it just comes through me. It’s a spiritual thing that has been given to me to share. Port Jefferson Artist Julie Doczi Smithtown Township Arts Council is pleased to announce that the works of Long Island artist Julie Doczi will be on view at Apple Bank, 91 Route 111, Smithtown, October 1 - December 1, 2018. The exhibition, part of STAC’s Outreach Gallery Program, can be viewed during regular bank hours. “I have always been drawn to both art and music. As a child, nothing could get me more excited than a brand new box of Crayola’s! I was inspired by my mother’s artwork in creative design and

ceramics, and enjoyed the art classes I had the opportunity to attend as a child.” However, life took Julie in the direction of music. She became a flutist and music educator, having taught in the Three Village School District for thirtyone years. “My journey into painting as an adult began when I encountered the medium of pastels. Having had the opportunity to study with many fine pastelists, I learned about value, perspective, warm and cool, light and shadow, form and texture. I began

to find my view of the world around me opening up in a way I had never experienced before. “Where we put our awareness, and for how long, maps our destiny.” - Dr. Joe Dispenza As I write this column on a Friday morning, my mind is already filled with the promise of tranquility, relaxation and family time that Saturday and Sunday brings. Ah… the finish line at last; it’s Friday! “TGIF,” or as Rihanna says, “Cheers to the Freakin’ Weekend!” For those of us that lead hectic, multi-tasking lives during the week, you know exactly what I’m talking about. The promise of a Friday, and the relief it brings, is necessary for re-centering our spirits and re-charging our batteries. I think we can all agree that there is nothing wrong with loving Fridays. However, I want to encourage everyone reading this to… wait for it… also love Mondays. Don’t hate me. I’ll never forget a New York Times article I read years ago that ominously stated, “Heart Attacks Are More Common on Mondays.” Why would more heart attacks happen on a Monday? It’s just

another day of the week. The “why” is in our perception and our anticipation of what Monday means. Dr. Joe Dispenza, a prominent researcher in the field of the mind/body connection, famously explains, “Thoughts are the domain of the mind, while feelings are the domain of the body.” In other words, our brain processes the fact that it’s Monday, our mind creates a thought and a story around that fact, and then our body reacts to the story our mind tells us. Follow? If we tell ourselves that Monday is the start of “another long, stress-filled week,” our body will then react to that negative story we are telling the mind. You can probably trace this back to when you were a kid and dreading having to return to school on Monday, after a funfilled and carefree weekend. This thought pattern is a habit, nothing more. Let’s re-frame the story we tell ourselves about Monday. Monday is a new opportunity to put all of that inspiration and clarity you’ve gained during the weekend to work for you. It’s a new day

to create a more successful, empowered outcome than you experienced the previous week. Let’s look at it this way: weekends are for rest and relaxation, while Mondays are for action and innovation. Isn’t that a better story to tell ourselves about Monday? If you begin repeating this affirmation to yourself enough times, your mind will start to integrate it, and your body will begin to respond inkind. I can’t tell you how many times I was enjoying a relaxing, fun-filled weekend when I was unexpectedly struck with an AhHa moment. Suddenly, I was champing at the bit for Monday morning, so that I could put this lightning bolt of inspiration to work in a new and exciting way. Mondays are the days that dreams are made of. Make that call, send that email, present that idea, and when another Friday rolls around, celebrate all you’ve accomplished by treating yourself to a fabulous weekend.

Southern Charm Hits Long Island’s Musical Stage

On Sunday, October 14, at 5 p.m., the Long Island Museum will welcome singer/songwriter Kate Campbell, making her first Long Island performance as part of the Sunday Street Music Series presented by WUSB-FM radio and the Greater Port Jefferson Northern Brookhaven Arts Council. Over the course of more than two decades, Kate has set forth on a unique musical journey that is rooted in the stories of people connected with the modern south. Her endearing, clear-

water vocal delivery and her eloquent gift for storytelling have drawn repeated comparisons to such bastions of the Southern literary tradition as Flannery O’Connor, William Faulkner, and Eudora Welty. Earl L. Vandermeulen High School senior Chloe Andriani will serve as the voice of her peers as a student representative to the seven-member Port Jefferson School District Board of Education in the

2018-19 school year. Chloe’s role will be to report on student activities and upcoming events at the board’s monthly meetings. She was elected to the position by her classmates at the end of the last school year. “Each experience is a life lesson learned,” said Chloe, on her new role. “Being involved in my school and community is part of my life. I take great pride in my school and I hope to represent it in the best way.” In addition to serving as a nonvoting board of

education representative and being a successful, well-rounded student, Chloe is a member of the Environmental Club, Interact Club, Latin Club, Leo Club, National Honor Society, Science Olympiad and varsity cheer team. She is also senior class president of the Student Organization, on the softball team, performs in the school’s orchestra and has been involved in dance for the past 14 years.

Earl L. Vandermeulen High School senior Annalisa Welinder has qualified as a semifinalist in the 64th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Annalisa’s love of learning and outstanding academic talent extend beyond the advanced

courses she takes in school. She is a member of the Academic Team, the Latin Club and Mathletes. She also competes on behalf of the school on both the tennis and track teams. In addition to her impressive academic accomplishments, Annalisa has attended Julliard’s pre-college division music program since eighth grade to perfect her exceptional violin skills. She also takes an applied linear algebra class through Suffolk County Community College. Reading, graphic design and writing poetry round out her varied interests. She is among

approximately 16,000 high school students nationwide who were awarded the distinction by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. They represent the top 1 percent of students from across the country with the highest scores on the qualifying Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The Maurer Foundation is a local nonprofit organization that has been for over serving the community 20 years. Their mission is to save lives through breast health education that focuses on breast cancer prevention, healthy lifestyle choices, early detection and risk reduction. Responding to the need in her own practice, breast surgeon Dr. Virginia Maurer first made breast health education programs available to her patients and to their families. These programs became so successful, which encouraged her to reach out to the general public, but particularly to adolescent women through high school breast health programs. One of Dr. Maurer’s beliefs is that the choices we make early in life can affect our future beast health. Dr. Maurer actively participates as Founder, motivator and as an inspiration for this foundation. As of today, the Maurer Foundation has brought their life-saving message of breast cancer prevention and early detection to over 80% of Long Island’s Public High Schools! From reaching just over a thousand people in 1995, The Maurer Foundation, supported by steadfast board members, experienced staff and gifted volunteers, has continued to broaden their capacity, allowing them to reach hundreds of thousands of people! Basement remodeling tips A basement remodeling project can add valuable and usable space to a home. For many years, homeowners overlooked the potential of a basement remodel, perhaps thinking it would not be a smart return on investment. But that’s no longer the case. The latest “Cost vs. Value” report from Remodeling magazine says the average basement remodel can cost around $61,000 with a 70.3 percent recoup rate. In addition, HGTV says architects and contractors indicate the cost of redoing a basement is roughly one-third to one-half less than the price of putting an addition on a home. Before remodeling a basement, homeowners should think about how they want to use the space. Homeowners also must focus on some potential obstacles in a basement that will need to be addressed so that the area can be as functional as possible. Basements can be chilly and damp. That means moisture issues and heating and cooling needs must be addressed prior to

any construction. Homeowners may have to consider the installation of a dehumidifier and run venting through the basement to allow for proper climate control. If a basement takes on water, either through the walls or a concrete slab, a professional waterproofing company can come in and fix these issues so they will not damage drywall and flooring afterwards. The presence of insects and pests also must be addressed. Exterminators can help homeowners figure out which insects are in their basements and how to make the space less hospitable to these unwelcome guests so that the room will become comfortable for human occupants. Space is often at a premium in basements, which may contain HVAC units, water heaters, filtration devices, ductwork, pipes, and the other appliances. Qualified contractors can suggest solutions for cordoning off appliances and camouflaging pipes and wires so they won’t detract from the finished product. West Nile Virus In Suffolk County Suffolk County Health Commissioner Dr. James Tomarken announced today that three new mosquito samples tested positive for West Nile virus. The samples, all Culex pipiens-restuans, were collected on September 13th from Amityville, Jamesport, and Shelter Island. To date, the county has reported one horse, 135 mosquito samples and 10 birds have tested positive for West Nile Virus. The county has also reported

three human cases of West Nile virus to date this year. West Nile virus, first detected in birds and mosquito samples in Suffolk County in 1999 and again each year thereafter, is transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito. “Though the temperatures are getting cooler, mosquitoes may still be active for several more weeks this year,” said Dr. Tomarken. “We advise residents to continue to do their best to reduce

exposure to West Nile virus.” According to Dr. Tomarken, most people infected with West Nile virus will experience mild or no symptoms, but some can develop severe symptoms including high fever, headache, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness, vision loss, numbness and paralysis. The symptoms may last several weeks, and neurological effects may

be permanent. Individuals, especially those 50 years of age or older, or those with compromised immune systems, who are most at risk, are urged to take precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. To avoid mosquito bites, residents are advised to: Minimize outdoor activities between dusk and dawn. Wear shoes and socks, long pants and long-sleeved shirts when mosquitoes are active.water a Use mosquito repellent,

following label directions carefully. Make sure all windows and doors have screens, and that all screens are in good repair. Keep mosquitoes from laying eggs inside and outside of your home. Girl Scout Troop 2907 of Setauket was recently given a Bronze Award for their creation of a Hydrologic Model, the water cycle at the Ward Melville Heritage Organization’s Ernst Marine Conservation Center, at West Meadow Creek. Using all recycled materials, their creation demonstrates the

Older People Improve Life For Others And Themselves (NAPSI)—Many older Americans have discovered that sharing their accumulated wisdom with others who need help can be a big win all around. Here’s a look at two ways you can stretch your mind and show your heart: Experience Corps AARP Foundation Experience Corps unites teachers, schools and older adults to improve children’s academic and social outcomes. This benefits the children, the schools and the volunteers. The program has been proven to help children who aren’t reading at grade level become better readers by the end of third grade. Last school year, 76 percent of students who were below grade level at the beginning of the year raised their reading and literacy performance by one or more proficiency levels with the help of Experience Corps volunteers. The goal is to improve

children’s literacy, strengthen communities, develop cultures of inspiration in schools and support hardworking teachers. It’s already changed the lives of thousands of children in schools across America. Volunteers should be age 50 or older; have at least a high school diploma or GED; pass a criminal background check; pass a basic literacy screening; attend 25 hours of annual training; and have five to 15 hours a week to offer during the school year. Tax-Aide AARP Foundation also runs Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service, giving special attention to those 50 and older. It offers free taxfiling help to those who need it most. You do not need to be a member of AARP or even a retiree to use this free service. IRS tax-certified volunteer preparers in libraries, malls, banks, community centers and senior centers answer

questions and prepare tax returns. In addition to earned and retirement income reporting, they can also help with investment income (interest, dividends, and capital gains for Schedule D), Schedule C for individuals with small businesses that have less than $25,000 in annual expenses, and various health care, education, child and earned income credits. Compassionate and friendly individuals can volunteer for the upcoming tax season. Volunteers receive training and continued support in a welcoming environment. On September 13th, during the first general membership meeting of the new school year, the Suffolk County School Superintendents Association presented its prestigious Friend of the Association Award to Chief Stuart Cameron of the Suffolk County Police Department. “It is an honor to recognize someone who has made a tremendous contribution to our association, and our school districts,” said SCSSA President and Superintendent of the Elwood School District, Dr. Kenneth Bossert. “Chief Cameron goes above and beyond to provide information, training and support to our school district security staff, and to build upon the collaboration that has been developed between the Suffolk County Police Department and Suffolk County public schools.”

The Friend of the Association Award is conferred periodically to recognize individuals who are not members of the association, but have gone to extraordinary measures to support the mission-driven efforts of the association. SCPD Chief Awarded years, Chief Cameron has personally delivered training to hundreds of school administrators and security staff. He has also personally trained county, fire and EMS personnel on how to coordinate their responses to an active shooter incident at a school facility. Chief Cameron developed and delivered, on numerous occasions, a comprehensive tabletop exercise to better coordinate and improve school safety in Suffolk County. This exercise program was recognized by the National Association of Counties, earning Chief Cameron its Achievement Award in 2008.
