On September 10, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilwoman Jane Bonner announced that work will begin soon on the reconstruction of the east and west jetties at the inlet of Mt. Sinai Harbor. State Senator Ken LaValle secured a $3 million New York State Grant to partly fund the project and Brookhaven Town has budgeted $5.6 million for

the remainder of the cost. Councilwoman Bonner worked for many years to secure the funding and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) permits that are required before reconstruction could start. Her persistence has finally paid off and the project is expected to be completed in 2020. The Mount Sinai Harbor jetties are critical

to the navigation of thousands of recreational and commercial boats, and to maintain public safety along the north shore of the Town. Over the years, the rocks that comprise the jetties have collapsed such that the seaward ends become submerged at high tide and the elevation of the jetty stones above the water surface at high tide is, in places, less than

four feet. In addition, the west jetty becomes detached from the land at high water and sand is passing through or around the east jetty. Located between the two jetties is a navigational channel that provides access to the Long Island Sound from the deeper waters of the harbor. Navigational traffic includes many private pleasure craft, commercial

fishing and lobster boats, and emergency rescue vessels including, police, fire department, and bay constables. The harbor also functions as a place of refuge for vessels during storms. Supervisor Romaine said, “The safe navigation of Mt. Sinai Harbor depends heavily on the jetties, but their condition has worsened and it’s time to rebuild them. I thank Senator LaValle for his

support on this project and for all that he does for the residents of Brookhaven Town.” Councilwoman Bonner said, “The jetties have been battered by many big storms, nor’easters and hurricanes over the years that have made navigation of the inlet more hazardous. Now, we can begin to rebuild, so that Mt. Sinai Harbor can be a much safer place for everyone.”

multi-grade exploration of the story’s plot, characters, the Butterﬂy Effect and a guided time travel expedition to the Cretaceous period. According to English teacher Michael Augello, the reason the school year begins with an activity like this is to get students used to the expectations for their classes and to reﬂect

and learn about what good readers do when reading, analyzing and writing about literature. “When the students come together and meet with other classes (especially different grade levels), they are amazed at the different perspectives other students and teachers bring to the conversation,” Augello said.

Van Cott brings more than a decade of professional experience to this position, most recently in the Oceanside School District as assistant superintendent for business/treasurer. He earned advanced certification in school district business leadership from Stony Brook University, a master’s degree in banking and finance from Dowling College and an

She also earned two master’s degrees in early childhood/special education and family and consumer sciences education from Touro College and City University of New York at Queens College, respectively. in speech communications with a minor in human relations, which she earned at St. Joseph’s College. Neckin spent much of her career in the Great Neck Public Schools, where she both taught and gained leadership skills, most recently as the department head of family and consumer sciences. She holds New York State certifications in school building leadership, students with disabilities at all grade levels, and K-12 family and consumer science. She also has coaching experience in girls soccer and girls basketball and is professionally affiliated with several educational associations.

The Charity of the Month for October is: The Cemetry of Lost Souls (lostsoulsli.com) Benefitting Melissa’s Wish It’s hard to believe that October is already here and Halloween is quickly approaching! After The Cemetery of Lost Souls, a grassroots organization ran by a family in Massapequa Park, reached out to me and told me their story, I decided to choose them for the Charity of the Month. Sometimes it’s easy to judge a book by it’s cover. For example, when you see the frightening Haunted House that they create each year, you may not be thinking that there is a deep meaning behind why they do it. Once I discovered this, along with the driving force which pushes them to bring this event back year after year, I knew I had to feature them! In 2008 Christopher and Joann (husband and wife) of Massapequa Park started decorating their yard for Halloween with their children. In 2009 they built their first prop, added some smoke, lights and store bought decorations. That same year they became aware of H.O.L.I., an organization on Long Island that compiles a list of the best decorated home “Haunts”. It became their family’s goal to make it onto that list and in 2011 they achieved that goal. In 2012, their children had the idea of using their “special talents” to help others. Their oldest son thought of making their displays more interactive by adding actors to haunt their elaborate sets and setting up a donation box that people could donate to different charities. Their charity event was officially born and every year since it has grown bigger. Each year this organization gears up to create an elaborate Haunted House on their property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. Additionally and more importantly, each year they choose a charity to raise funds for. The best part is, they don’t keep a penny for themselves. Every bit of money raised through this event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to charity. They rely heavily on devoted individuals and community support, as the actors and people who put the haunt on are volunteers and most of

the actors are local students. They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and Long Island Cares. In 2017, Massapequa Park Mayor, Jeff Provato, even showed up to give support and was given the “Key To The Haunt”! This year they are donating to Melissa’s Wish, a non-profit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, non-medical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicated with a serious illness, injury or end of life event. This year they will bring the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! Stop by on October 12, 18-19, 25-26, 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM to see what it is all about! Additionally, they are still actively looking for volunteers in the following areas: Digital Marketing, Scare Team Members, Security and on their Bake Team. Volunteers must be 16 years of age and volunteer time can count towards community service hours! Sponsorship opportunities are also available. Intentional Balloon Release Ban At the Wednesday, September 4th General Meeting, the Suffolk County Legislature unanimously approved Introductory Resolution 1611-2019, legislation sponsored by Legislator Sarah Anker, to prohibit the intentional release of

helium balloons in Suffolk County. “Through research and data, we know that the release of balloons has a devastating effect on our sea life. We live on an island and the majority of the balloons end up in our surface waters and on our

beaches. Balloons become beach litter or entangled in boat motors that directly impact Long Island’s $4 billion ocean-related tourism industry,” said Legislator Sarah Anker. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA),

balloon debris can be easily mistaken for food and ingested by animals, and balloons with ribbons can entangle wildlife. Balloon debris can also have an economic impact on communities by contributing to dirty beaches, and can cause

power outages when entangled with power lines. “The beaches in my legislative district, that includes the coastline from Mount Sinai to Wading River, are greatly impacted by environmental pollution,

in particular plastics and balloons. It’s time we take responsibility for keeping our oceans clean and become better stewards of our environment,” said Legislator Anker.
