ADRC’s Executive Director and CEO, Mary Ann MalackRagona, announced today that twenty-seven sites across Nassau and Suffolk will participate in the Center’s 20132014 Art Expression Program developed for individuals with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease. ADRC has been coordinating this very special program since 2003. The program includes training for professional coordinators, with ongoing support throughout the program year. The program culminates with ADRC’s Annual Tea and Art Exhibit where the paintings created by the Alzheimer’s artists are on display. Family friends and relatives are invited to the Annual event, and the event is open to the public. “It is always amazing to see the completed artwork

because in many cases our Alzheimer’s artists are unable to verbalize but are able to put their thoughts, feelings and emotions into their artwork,” states Ms. Malack-Ragona. Ms. Malack-Ragona further states, “The purpose of the Art Expression Program is to stimulate the mind through creation, and strengthen self-esteem and relationships.” Individuals participating in the program work in small groups and in a non-judgmental environment where process is more important than the finished product. On Sunday September 22nd, Giant Step Services of Hauppauge held their second annual Circle For A Cause fundraiser to benefit Strength for Life raising $2,720 for the non profit. Strength for Life provides FREE exercise classes and wellness retreats for cancer patients/survivors on Long Island. Giant Step Services is a community based comprehensive vocational/independent living program for postsecondary students with learning challenges located in Hauppauge. The Giant Step program is designed to maximize

each young adult’s growth by utilizing supportive, individualized approach to movement from home or boarding school to community and work or post-secondary academics. The students went above and beyond reaching out to family and friends and walking laps to show their support of the Strength for Life programs that promote “fighting cancer with exercise.” Their sponsorship was matched by Ms. Lauri Alpern and Mr. Dave Finkelstein of Giant Step Services. This is truly a blessing for Strength for Life.

For every $300 donation a cancer patient/survivor is sponsored for a wellness retreat participating in an overnight stay, a day full of classes (Zumba, Tai Chi, Yoga, Strength Training, Reiki and Meditation) and fabulous guest speakers presenting on alternative therapies and nutrition. Music For Life Fundraiser Some of New York City’s best DJ talent will come together at 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 13th, at FOUR Food Studio & Cocktail Salon in Melville to help raise money to benefit “Team Galluzzo,” a charity dedicated to raising awareness and providing financial relief for cancer patients and their families. Music For Life was established in 2012, and for the first time in history, some of the most famous DJ’s in the NYC club scene, such as Victor Calderone, Hector Romero, Jonathan Peters and Grammy Award Winner Hex Hector, came together to raise money for industry families who were fighting cancer. Due to the event’s tremendous success, the Music For Life team is committed to making this an annual event. This year, “Team Galluzzo” has joined forces with Music For Life to raise money for

a fellow DJ and industry alum, Jeff Galluzzo and his family. Jeff, a 46 yearold, non-smoker, has been fighting Lung Cancer for the last four years and was diagnosed in the summer of 2010 while in training for a triathlon. Since then, Jeff has had numerous chemotherapy and radiation treatments, underwent four surgeries, one of which removed his right lung. Just two weeks ago, Jeff’s doctors informed him and his family that the cancer is now terminal and that there is nothing more they can do. Given the amount of daily care he requires, his fearless wife Jodi has been by his side, day and night, taking care of his every need. As you can imaagine, the hardship this family has endured mentally, physically and financially is incredible, and yet they still soldier on with a positive attitude and unwavering determination.

Cliché? Sure. The headline has been used countless times by every media outlet imaginable to commemorate the retirement of a living legend, New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera. But it’s fitting. So very fitting. Yankee fan or not, as we have seen over the last few weeks – the entire season, really – there is no one who can deny the pure talent, the class and dignity with which this man played the game for 19 seasons. In city after city, members of opposing teams eagerly lined up to honor a pitcher the likes of which this game will never see again. Plaques and gifts were presented, generous donations were

made to his charitable organization and crowds rose to their feet in extended standing ovations, marveling at their good fortune at being able to witness a slice of history. Of course, no one does pomp and circumstance quite like the New York Yankees themselves. I was fortunate to be a member of the sellout crowd who turned out for the team’s official sendoff to the Sandman, on Sunday, September 22nd, 2013. What an amazing display of affection from the team, past players, managers, coaches – and the fans, who seemed to not want the opening ceremony to end. The last player to ever wear the #42 had his number retired alongside the greats in Monument Park, surrounded

by the family of the original #42, Jackie Robinson. Metallica entered the field to perform the “Sandman’s” selfappointed theme song live, as Mo ran out to greet the members of the former World Championship teams who lined the diamond. It was perfect, just like Mariano had been so many times before. What a priceless memory, up there right along with the countless classic moments he had helped orchestrate throughout the years. Nineteen seasons – pretty much the entire duration of my time as a baseball fan. That’s an absence that’s pretty difficult to get over. Baseball, quite simply, will never be the same for me. Thanks for the memories, Mariano. #42 Forever.

A Memorable Occasion

On September 24th, eight boys and girls were awarded several honors for attending and excelling at Boys’ State and Girls’ State. I am proud to say that I am one of these eight. From the moment we walked into Post 1738, we were greeted by men in ties with our national colors. The podium was even emblazoned with an American pattern. The event started with a prayer, pledge and the reservation of a chair in the corner for those who remain missing after all of America’s combat. We found ourselves in a room full of legionnaires, overachievers and politicians, such as Senator Phil Boyle, Suffolk County Treasurer Angie Carpenter, Congressman Peter King, Assemblyman Joseph Saladino, Suffolk County Legislator Thomas Barraga

and many others. It was truly an intense experience. That night, at Post 1738, we came together to share stories and receive awards. Delivering a speech in front of them was

even more anxiety provoking. The eight of us found ourselves recollecting a week that served as the highlight of our summer and the spark for our patriotism. For me, staring at all of my heroes was truly a test of both my resolve and my public speaking abilities! We were in the presence of the people

that make our great nation run. Without the officials who were present, our society would be nothing. After giving my speech, I returned to the seat beside my mother and trembled at the thought of the journey I had just finished. My road with Boys’ State has come to an end, but my pride in our country has just germinated. At the end of the night, I received a Congressional Certificate of Merit, a Proclamation and a multitude of other awards; but mostly, a sense of American Patriotism. I would like to conclude by thanking American Legion Post 1738, the political figures who give me the hope for a greater nation, and the men and women who have given their lives for the United States of America.

Members of the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO) recently donated their services to Head Start Early Childhood Development Program. Five members of the Professional Organizers of Long Island (POLI) contributed their skills and services to reorganizing a storage room at Head Start’s Hempstead location. The room houses program supplies, books, and donated clothing for preschoolers three to five years old and their families. Autumn’s arrival doesn’t mean the boating and fishing season has to come to an end. Quite the contrary! Most anglers will tell you that some of the year’s best fishing occurs in the fall, and boaters agree that leaf-peeping while slowly cruising through calm, mirror-like waters takes on an almost ethereal quality. However, the arrival of fall’s shorter days and colder temperatures does require boaters to take some extra precautions in order to ensure a safe and enjoyable outing for all. With this in mind, the Sea Tow Foundation, a nonprofit organization created to promote boating safety, offers the following six tips for boaters and anglers who go out on the water this fall. Update your charts. Local aids to navigation like channel markers and buoys placed by local authorities may be pulled as early as October in some areas. With autumn’s shorter days, you also may wind up cruising home after dark, making even familiar landmarks hard to spot. Make sure your charts – electronic and paper – are up to date so you can use them to navigate instead of visual aids. Check nav lights and flares. Make sure that your boat’s navigation lights are in working order and

This Halloween season, the Moriches Paquatuck Squaws is asking everyone to get “spooked” for a good cause at the 25th Annual Spooky Walk Fundraiser, which will take place at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck on October 18th-19th and October 25th-26th. Gates will be open from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on all four days. Each year, there are new exhibits mixed in with old Spooky Walk favorites. Whether it is weaving through the mysterious Black Woods, dodging ghosts, ghouls and goblins or exploring the Psycho Circus, expect scream-worthy surprises at every turn! With over 45 minutes of scares, the Spooky Walk is considered to be one of the longest — and scariest — haunted walks on Long Island. The walk is intended for older children, teens and adults, with younger children able to participate at the discretion of their caregiver. If for any reason a child needs to leave the walk, parents can contact a security officer for assistance. Tickets are $15 each. Spooky Walk merchandise and food will also be available on site. All proceeds will benefit Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. The event is presented by the Moriches Paquatuck Squaws, who have raised over $100,000 for Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck annually for the camp. The Port Jefferson Middle School is coming together this fall under the One School, One Book program initiated by the school’s English language arts teachers. Students in grades 6-8, as well as members of the faculty and staff, are all reading R.J. Palacio’s Wonder. The No. 1 New York Times bestseller is about a boy named August Pullman, who was born with a facial deformity, and his journey to find acceptance from his peers. “Our goal was to pick a book that was pervasive and relatable to students

at this age,” said Port Jefferson Middle School English teacher Deirdre Filippi, a member of the book selection committee. “We purposely chose to introduce this book early in the semester so that students can reflect on the message throughout the year.” Over the next three weeks, students will discuss the text in class and conclude the unit with a culminating project in October. “The assignment will focus on what makes each individual student special and unique,” said Filippi. “It will help us

Nancy Winkler-Brogan’s third-grade class at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School celebrated the International Day of Peace on September 20th. Inspired by their reading of the book Can You Say Peace, by Karen Katz, the class decided to learn more about the Day of Peace, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1981. “The project began with our observance of 9/11,” said Winkler-

Brogan who collaborated with Edna Louise Spear Elementary teacher Jacqueline Gandolfo on the endeavor. “From there, the class began discussions about what peace means to them and to people around the world.” The lesson culminated with the students holding an in-class poetry reading for their parents in order to share their stories of peace. The young authors spoke of what peace looks, feels and even tastes like to

them and why. “Not only is it a great way for the children to express themselves, it also helps them to develop their presentation and listening skills,” said Winkler-Brogan of the poetry reading. In addition, the students have been working on various activities that focus on bringing peace to their classrooms, homes and community.

WWP helps thousands of wounded warriors returning home

from the current conflicts and provides assistance to their families. SkillsUSA Lead Advisor Evelyn Lebron-Mele said, “SkillsUSA students are preparing for careers in trade, technical, and skilled service occupations. Students pledge to do things for others and strive to be active in their schools and communities.”

Young Composers

ADOPT-A-THON FAIR - Members of the Sound Beach Civic Association recently held their Second Annual Adopt-a-thon Fair and Expo. The event worked to promote animal welfare and responsible pet ownership. The Adopt-a-thon also included animals available for adoption into new, loving homes. Several talented student composers from the Three Village Central School District have earned both state and national recognition from the National Association for Music Education and the New York State School Music Association. Elizabeth Wang, a student at P.J. Gelinas Junior High School, was named one of only 10 winners in the national Student Composers Competition conducted by NAfME. In addition to a monetary award, Elizabeth was invited to perform her

solo piano composition, “Reflections,” at the NAfME National In-Service Conference in Nashville, Tenn. in late October. Four students – Steven Holmquist (R.C. Murphy Junior High School), Emma Martinez (Setauket Elementary School), Elizabeth Wang (P.J. Gelinas) and Rebecca Zhang (Nassakeag Elementary School) – achieved a state-level honor and will have their pieces performed at the Young Composers Honors Concert at the NYSSMA Winter Conference in

Rochester, N.Y. in early December. Additionally, six students – Tristan Adams (P.J. Gelinas), Jessica Guo (P.J. Gelinas), Victor Jiao (P.J. Gelinas), Varun Jindal (P.J. Gelinas), Albert Liu (R.C. Murphy) and Justin Zhang (Nassakeag) – achieved the distinction of earning honorable mention in the NYSSMA composition program. While their pieces were not selected for the NYSSMA conference, they were noted to be high contenders for inclusion.
