beautiful, sunny and breezy day attracted hundreds of children, students, faculty, family members and community residents to Rocky Point’s Homecoming on September 20th at Rocky Point High School. The day was full of festivities for everyone, leading up to the Eagles’ big football game against the Harborfields Tornadoes. The energized home team played a great game and won 34-14. A great time was had by all.

Ward Melville High School graduate Steven Matz was recently presented with the Sterling Pitcher of the Year award at Citi Field as the Mets’ top minor league pitcher. Matz, 23, had a 2.25 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP in 12 starts for Single-A St. Lucie before being promoted to Double-A Binghamton. In 12 starts there, he had a 2.27 ERA 1.12 WHIP. He also helped lead Binghamton to an Eastern League Championship. Matz was also

Invitational A Success

Making A Splash Eagle pride ran deep this homecoming with Rocky Point Middle School administrators, teachers and staff kicking off the weekend by accepting the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Participants decked out in ponchos, snorkels and ﬂoatation devices prepared for the chilling challenge as students cheered from

the crowd. Buckets lined the school’s fields and oneby-one members of the educational community dumped the ice filled water over their heads in a show of unity. Throughout the week students raised funds to support the ALS Association and educated their peers on the disease.

Guest of honor ALS patient Christopher Pendergast attended the event and accepted the school’s donations on behalf of the organization. The middle school spread the mission by turning to the high school and tasking them to get wet for a good cause!

Band Of Brothers

The Villanova Rugby team is an organization that has gone through many twists and turns in its history. It was disbanded for a few years, only to come back stronger than ever. This year, the Villanova Rugby Football Club is on the road to a playoff finish. In our first three games, we played some of the best teams in the country. Notre Dame College and Towson are the two favorites to win it all this year. We played both of these teams, and although we lost, gave them a run for their money. This weekend, MAKING A SPLASH - Guest of honor ALS patient Christopher Pendergast looked we are set to take on

I’m expected to get in on all of the rucks. I do this willingly, because my teammate is often at the bottom of that pile. I look out for them, and they look out for me. Its a bond that we’ve developed on the Rugby Team. The other players have been like an extended family to me. I’m really liking this team, and I hope that I can play on it for the next four years. Villanova has really proven to be a good fit for me. I like that sense of brotherhood, and the Rugby Team is full of fun people.

Lock Haven. Under the guidance of four new coaches, the Rugby Team is finally gaining respect on campus. We practice five days a week in the hopes that we can win matches. It’s a violent sport, and many of our guys have gotten injured. There are no pads in rugby, so players face a huge risk. During a game, there are fifteen large men on the other team who want to hurt you. If you have the ball, you need to move. There is no stoppage in play. Students, teachers and staff at Arrowhead, Nassakeag and Setauket elementary schools were recently challenged by neighborhood schools to raise money and awareness in the fight against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, more commonly known as ALS. At Arrowhead, students poured money over their teachers’ heads as the crowd of kids roared in

support. At Nassakeag, more than $1,500 was raised from students vying to get the chance to dump ice water on a specific teacher. The staff agreed to match the funding up to $500, so more than $2,000 was generated from the school. At Setauket, ice water was dumped over everyone’s heads, including Principal Nathalie Lilavois, who cheered while she was

Please Hold Customer service. It’s a thankless job, to be sure. But for those of us on the other side of the phone, it can be downright maddening. Over the course of the last several weeks, I have had the good fortune of being in touch with representatives from three major companies and one federal agency. As polite as the majority of them have been, there is simply no substitute for good oldfashioned efficiency. From poor line conditions that make it sound as though you’ve been patched through to another planet, to computer screens that keep

“freezing,” necessitating the dreaded May I put you on hold for 5-7 minutes? request, it does make you wonder how any issues are ever resolved. What always gets me is the directory, which instructs you to select your issue and what department you would like to speak with; yet, once you actually reach a human after “longer than normal wait times,” they never seem to know what your call is in reference to. And after repeated calls, and numerous notations on the account in question, it would stand to reason that you shouldn’t have to re-explain the entire problem from the beginning. And yet…

I try to be patient through it all, telling myself it’s not their fault that they work for a completely inefficient organization. They simply have a job to do, as we all do. Flipping out never sped the process along. At the end of one of these service calls, which stretched over approximately three hours (yes, you read that correctly), the woman on the other end actually took the time out to thank me, saying my patience showed a lot about my character. Well, if dealing with customer service builds character, I think I’ve reached my quota for quite a while!

Eagles Soar A beautiful, sunny and breezy day attracted hundreds of children, students, faculty, family members and community residents to Rocky Point’s Homecoming on September 20th at Rocky Point High School. The day was full of festivities for everyone that led up to the Eagles’ big football game against the Harborfields Tornadoes. A fair that was set up adjacent to the track featured a variety of foods, games, face painting and booths for various school clubs and many other attractions. Faculty

members reconnected with their students — both past and present — and there were countless community members and alumni proudly wearing combinations of Rocky Point’s powder blue and white. The High School’s Homecoming Parade highlighted cheerleaders, the marching band and representatives from the Classes of 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018, who showed their school spirit on colorful ﬂoats. The parade culminated at the front of the school following a march that headed north on

Rocky Point-Yaphank Road. The Eagles were introduced to an enthusiastic home crowd that filled the bleachers. At halftime, the cheerleaders and marching band took the field and showcased their talents to spectators’ delights. The energized home team played a great game and won 34-14. Their masterful efforts, along with the inspiring performances of the marching band and cheerleaders, and the many displays of school pride, gave all of Rocky Point many reasons to smile.

The safe transportation of students is the top priority for Barbara Gildea, the transportation coordinator of the Three Village Central School District, who presented updates to the Board of Education at its September 17th meeting. Gildea said it’s a collaborative effort to make sure the transportation process runs smoothly, as students, parents, school officials and bus drivers all play an important role in the process. “Student transportation in this country is the largest public transportation we have,” Gildea said. “Our school bus drivers are second to none. They provide care for our children to and from school.” Prequalifications for school bus drivers include having a commercial driver’s license with a “P” endorsement and with zero or minimal points. They must also get state and federal fingerprint clearance. Before transporting students, SED-approved curriculum school bus driver training is provided to drivers upon hire. Drivers must complete the School Bus Driver Pre-Service course before they are assigned a route.

After gaining employment, drivers must complete a 30-hour School Bus Driver Program course within the first year of hire. They must also complete two separate two-hour refresher courses annually. During employment, they’re required to undergo random drug and alcohol testing. School buses are maintained and inspected on a regular basis, and preventive maintenance inspections are performed every three months or 3,000 miles, whichever comes first. The New York State Department of Transportation requires drivers to maintain daily inspection logs. School buses and logbooks are inspected by DOT-certified examiners every six months. During the 2013-2014 school year, contractors Suffolk Transportation Service (large buses) and Acme Bus Corporation (mini-buses) made 686 trips to athletic competitions, 334 educational field trips, and transported 180 nonpublic school students to 13 different buildings. During the typical school day, there are 339 school routes for Three Village buses, all of which are equipped with video

A collaborative effort between the Three Village Central School District and Sen. John Flanagan’s office resulted in New York State giving a $100,000 grant to the district for the 20142015 school year. The grant has restored high school electives, which are valuable to students and enhance learning opportunities. The monies were also used to set up five Common Core workshops for parents, which will be held for grades 3-5 on September 29th, grades 6-8 on October 14th, grades 3-4 on November 3rd, grades K-2 on December 1st and

All meetings will be held at the North Country Administration Center at 7 p.m. The Common Core workshops will provide parents with information and resources needed to help prepare their children for the upcoming tests. Parents will receive handouts and have the opportunity to ask questions. “Parents are partners in their child’s education and we believe it is important to provide parents with salient information about the Common Core State Standards and to address

questions they may have about what their children are expected to learn and know at the various grade levels,” Superintendent Cheryl Pedisich said. “Teachers and administrators at Three Village School District do an outstanding job every day preparing our children for academic and career success,” Flanagan added. “As the Chair of the Senate Education Committee, the single most important thing I can do is to secure additional funding and resources necessary to make their jobs easier.”

Good Deed Project As part of a Good Deed Project, Port Jefferson Middle School students pledged to do something good in honor of all the kind acts done by so many following the tragic events of September 11th, 2001. Through the project, which was designed by the English department, students pledged to do a good deed by writing it on a small paper square. The squares were then stitched together to form a quilt, which is now on display in the school’s hallway. Before the students decided on their pledge,

teachers discussed the immense impact that good deeds have and how they can brighten someone else’s day. According to English teacher Deirdre Filippi, the project was modeled after the nationally acclaimed “I Will” campaign, through which people can make pledges on the website www.911day.org. Here are some of the deeds students pledged to do: “Teach my little brother to read.” “Give my parents a hug and tell them I love them.”

“Show I care by helping a friend in need.” “Volunteer in the community and say thank you to a police officer or fireman.” “Do more chores and donate money to veterans.” “Put together a basket for the soldiers.” “Plan a food drive.” “Think of other people’s needs.” “Be kind to others and spread positivity.” “Participate in community service.” “Donate to charity and respect military members.”

Pleased With Results Three Village Central School District officials are pleased with the performance on the New York State Assessments from the 2013-2014 school year. On September 17th, Kevin Scanlon, the assistant superintendent for educational services, gave a detailed presentation to the Board of Education regarding the results. This was the second year of the new scoring and scaling, as the tests are based on the Common Core Learning Standards. Students were graded on a scale of 1 to 4, with 1 being well below proficient, 2 being below proficient, 3 being proficient and 4 excelling. On the grade eight English language arts exams, 58 percent of students scored at least a 3. That’s up 3 percent from 2012-2013. On the fourthgrade math, 66 percent of test takers scored at least a 3, also up 3 percent from last year.

In eighth-grade math, the percentage of students who scored at least a 3 on the exam dropped from 45 percent to 30 percent, but Scanlon said that’s due to the new algebra Regents that’s being offered instead of the Common Core math. Therefore, 301 students from Murphy and Gelinas middle schools are taking that path instead. “We should be proud of this,” Scanlon said. “Students are getting high school-level math at an earlier age. That allows them to take more advanced classes in high school.” The Class of 2014 in Three Village had a 99 percent graduation rate, and 95 percent of those students were accepted to college. Seventy-three percent of those began four-year programs after graduating from Ward Melville High School.

Reinforcing Respect In an effort to spread a message of kindness, Port Jefferson Middle School and Earl L. Vandermeulen High School welcomed motivational speaker David Flood. During the program, which focused heavily on dignity and respect for others and one’s self, Flood captured the students attention, identified the issues they are dealing with on a daily basis and

guided them through ways to address the situation, whether its for themselves or to assist another. Additionally, Flood addressed the issues each student in each grade is dealing with, refocusing them on the importance of dignity, respect and understanding. “It is important to provide our students with a consistent message through multiple sources,

in order to reinforce what we are teaching them in school,” said Middle School Principal Antonio Santana. According to his website, Flood’s experience as a hospice volunteer, caring for those who are terminally ill, and work with special needs children enables him to speak about human dignity like no other youth motivational speaker in the industry.
