That’s a significant benefit of being vaccinated, as people who get their ﬂu shots can indirectly help hospitals conserve potentially scarce resources. As the COVID-19 virus rapidly spread late in the winter of 2019-20, many hospitals across the country and even the globe were stretched incredibly thin. So anything ordinary citizens can do to alleviate such burdens can help save lives while also making hospital workers’ jobs easier and less stressful. Many people may be concerned about going out and getting a ﬂu shot in 2020. That’s especially likely for people who live in communities where

the COVID-19 virus is spreading. However, the CDC notes that getting a flu shot in 2020 is an essential part of protecting your health and the health of your family. Many doctor’s offices are now insisting patients wait in their cars until doctors are ready to see them, and masks may be required when entering the doctor’s office. Such measures can reduce the risk of getting the COVID-19 virus when visiting a doctor’s office for a flu shot or another visit, so patients should not be hesitant to receive their vaccinations in 2020. Patients can follow such protocols even if their doctors are not insisting they do so. The same safety measures can be followed by people who intend to get their flu shots from neighborhood pharmacies. Flu shots are vital to individual and public health every year, but the importance of being vaccinated against influenza in 2020 is heightened as the world continues to confront the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus.

To accomplish their mission, they focus on prevention, research, education, services, their Lend a Helping Hand program and awareness. This coalition serves all of Long Island, not just West Islip, and has remained open throughout the pandemic. They helped serve those in need during this pandemic by giving them food and gas gift cards, as well as assistance with living expenses. They are grateful for involvement from local businesses that have held fundrasier events for them and even donated goods to their organization. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program, where they will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son social enterprise that was

inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www. johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the charity code FG-WIBCC20. Next month they will present Pink Flags of October, a month-long event to honor and remember those affected by Breast Cancer. Hundreds of pink flags will be placed at the entrance of Good Samaritan Hospital. These ribbons will be tied to the flags and together the flags and ribbons will fly for the entire month of October. Millions of people across the globe get flu shots each year. Flu shots protect people against influenza, but they might provide even greater benefits in 2020. As the world continues to confront the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, it’s imperative that people everywhere take every step necessary to protect themselves and others. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that a flu vaccine will not protect people against COVID-19. However, flu vaccines have been shown to reduce the risk of illness related to the flu. Those illnesses weaken people’s immune systems, making them more vulnerable to other viruses, including COVID-19. Flu vaccines have also

Dental Hygiene is About More Than Just Your Teeth

make it more difficult for people with diabetes to control their blood sugar, making dental hygiene an especially vital component of routine healthcare for people with diabetes.

Individuals tend to learn about dental hygiene at an early age. On the recommendation of their children’s pediatricians, parents may begin brushing their youngsters’ teeth the moment the first tooth breaks through the gums. While proper dental hygiene is vital to oral health, it also can have a profound effect on the rest of the body. According to the Mayo Clinic, poor oral health might contribute to various diseases and conditions. Periodontitis is a severe yet preventable gum infection that can lead to tooth loss if left untreated, but the threat of periodontitis doesn’t end in the mouth. The American Academy of Periodontology notes there’s a connection between periodontitis and several other diseases.

While bacteria was long suspected to be the link between periodontitis and other diseases in the body, the AAP notes that recent research points to inﬂammation as the culprit that connects periodontitis with diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. Diabetes The AAP notes that people with diabetes are at increased risk for periodontal disease, speculating that diabetes patients’ risk is higher because people with diabetes are more vulnerable to infections than those without diabetes. While that suggests periodontal disease is a byproduct of diabetes, the AAP notes that research points to the relationship being a two-way street. Periodontal disease may

People with existing heart conditions also may find that periodontal disease exacerbates those conditions. Can periodontal disease be prevented? Periodontal disease is preventable. A daily dental hygiene regimen that includes brushing after meals, ﬂossing at least once per day and swishing with mouthwash are some simple, healthy habits that can prevent periodontal disease. In addition, the AAP recommends that people at increased risk for periodontal disease, including the elderly and smokers, should discuss their risk with their dental professionals. Dental hygiene can do more for individuals than produce a mouthful of pearly white teeth. In fact, people who prioritize dental hygiene may lower their risks for various diseases.

How to Take a More Active Role in Your Personal Health The role individuals play in their own health care became more prominent in 2020. As a global pandemic forced people from all walks of life to prioritize their personal health each time they left their homes, many individuals sought ways to take a more active role in their health care. Proactive health care has long been touted by medical professionals, though many people still don’t take such recommendations to heart. In fact, a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that as much as 75 percent of health care spending in the United States is reactive in nature, meaning that money is going toward treating conditions and diseases rather than preventing them from occurring in the first place. Taking an active role in your own health care is easier than people may think. And the benefits of such a proactive approach are numerous, including a reduced risk for various diseases.

Walking, jogging, hiking, and cycling are great forms of cardiovascular exercise that have been linked to a host of health benefits. A proactive approach to personal health is simple and effective, potentially helping people reduce their risk for a variety of diseases and conditions.

Many who have recovered from COVID-19 continue to experience long-lasting effects of the virus that range from breathing difficulties to the loss of strength and mobility. To assist local residents in their recovery, Catholic Health Services’s St. Charles Hospital has developed a Post-COVID Outpatient Rehabilitation Program, which includes medically-supervised physical therapy for endurance training,

strength training and education for patients who are at least 14 days past a COVID-19 diagnosis. “Patients who have recovered from COVID-19 may find they are unable to tolerate any type of activity,” said St. Charles Vice President of Rehabilitation Laura Beck. “They experience shortness of breath and weakness. These symptoms are seen in many people who have recovered from the virus whether or not they were on a ventilator.”

Young Adults And Mental Illness According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 8.8 million young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 report having a mental illness. Among those who reported such illnesses, 42 percent indicated their illness went untreated. Substance abuse disorders also are more common among 18- to 25-year-olds than many people may think. SAMHSA notes that 5.1 million young adults report having a substance abuse disorder, and 87 percent of those with disorders are not treated. After they received the approval to proceed, they headed to their new classrooms that feature sneeze guards and desks that are socially distanced. At LADSBS, students were greeted by Principal Herschaft, who was sporting a Panthers facemask, during morning arrival. Later in the day, Mr. Brian Mas’ fourth grade students socially distanced outside as they completed one of their first independent assignments. At NCRMS, Principal Clark checked in with students during their lunch period to discuss how their first week back to school was going. The conversation

focused on an overview of the middle school’s academic and social philosophies, reintroducing support staff, and helping students become more acquainted with new protocols and procedures like mandatory mask wearing at all times with the exception of lunch and mask breaks. At MPHS, students in Ms. Isenberg’s concert band class established this year’s routines and expectations while adhering to the recommended 12 ft. social distancing for music practice. To help voters better understand the details of the upcoming bond referendum and to address residents’ questions, members of the Rocky Point Fire District will host a virtual community forum on Wednesday, Oct. 7. Be Wary Of Foods That Contain Added Sugars Sugar is a naturally occurring component in many healthy foods, including fruit, but people looking to eat healthy should be wary of foods that contain added sugars, which can pose a significant threat to long-term health. According to the Harvard Medical School, added sugars are not currently listed on Nutrition Facts labels. That can make

New York Blood Center Encourages Blood Donors To Schedule Appointments

New York Blood Center is calling on the community to make appointments to visit donor centers as COVID-19 has fundamentally changed the process of donating blood. Before COVID-19, mobile blood drives hosted by high schools, colleges, businesses and other organizations made up about 75% of the region’s incoming blood supply, but the number of blood drives has dropped by twothirds this year due to the pandemic. The upcoming school year presents new and unprecedented challenges. Blood donations are typically lower during the summer and the return to school usually helps make up the difference and stabilize the blood supply. In the past, school and college drives have resulted in 75,000 blood donations during each school year. “The pandemic is forcing us to rethink the entire landscape, which means encouraging donors to take the extra step of making an appointment and traveling to a donor center. The loss of young donors is a particular challenge because our future blood supply is dependent on these firsttime donors becoming lifetime donors,” said Andrea H. Cefarelli, Senior Executive Director of Recruitment & Marketing for New York Blood Center. “We’ve always relied on

the fall to provide a boost in blood donations from high school and college students hosting drives and this year we know this relief will not be coming.” NYBC began hosting a limited number of drives again this summer, however they are far from the number of drives per month needed to support area hospitals. NYBC is encouraging eligible donors of all ages to adapt to this new normal by making appointments to visit a one of its 19 donors centers, which have expanded capacity and hours of operation in order safely accommodate more donors. Through the years, SBVAC’s reputation and community role evolved, maturing from being a provider of basic emergency treatment and transportation on a 365-day-a-year, 24/7 basis, to an advanced life support emergency medical service still on an all day, every day basis. What started with a Cadillac and a Volkswagon

van now is an Advanced Life Support and Basic Life Support EMS agency with three ambulances and a responder car. Stony Brook University students can apply to the agency, even if they don’t have experience. Through 100 applicants per semester, about 10 or 15 are invited to join the probationary class. “By the end of the probationary semester, we are left with a number of members who are inducted into the agency,” says Nikhil Bamarajpet, ‘21, a biology student and SBVAC’s current president. During the COVID-19 pandemic, SBVAC members also fought on

the frontlines. The agency set up an interfacility transport service in which ambulances were used to transport quarantined/ isolated students either from the Emergency Department to their dorm or from one dorm to another. In 2002, SBVAC won the Suffolk Regional EMS Council Agency of the Year Award, then went on to win the New York State EMS Agency of the Year Award. In 2013, SBVAC won the National Collegiate Emergency Medical Services Foundation Collegiate EMS Agency of the Year Award.

THE GREAT PAL-O-MINE COIN CHALLENGE - Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc. There will be three opportunities to win special Pal-O-Mine prizes: one on Halloween Day, another during Thanksgiving week and the last one on New Year’s Day.
