Farmers Market At Spirit’s Promise Equine Rescue
Rocky Point Middle School students returned to school with an enhanced educational locale – an outdoor classroom. A ribbon-cutting took place the first week of classes to celebrate the unique learning environment for students in grades 6-8. Several years in the making, with leadership and planning reins taken by the PTA, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Scott O’Brien, Principal James Moeller and Assistant Principal Dawn Meyers, the space is a welcome addition that highlights the advantages of outdoor learning and access to nature, both known to increase student enthusiasm and as being
beneficial to social, emotional and physical health, and an important component of education in the COVID era. The space, work surfaces that can be grouped together to form 15 tabletops, or with a simple maneuver, turned into benches with comfortable backs that can seat 30 students in a socially distant manner, are surrounded by freshly planted greenery. It is also an excellent accessible space for students with special needs and comes complete with a dry erase whiteboard. Teachers can reserve the space for lessons through the school’s Google calendar.
According to Moeller, it has already been met with much enthusiasm by staff and students as a place that will spark creativity and motivate a different perspective on science and nature. The district is grateful to many in the Rocky Point community including Bill Barber Masonry and Decorative Gardens, local organizations that supported the efforts by donating the labor for the project. The district also thanks the PTA and especially members Kristine Susmin and Kathi Heggers for a vision that has turned into a beneficial reality for Rocky Point students.
14 Ward Melville High School Students Selected As National Merit Semifinalists
The Three Village School District is pleased to announce that 14 Ward Melville High School students were named National Merit Semifinalists in the 67th annual National Merit Scholarship Program competition. Each of these students will continue to compete for one of 7,500 National Merit Scholarships, which altogether total more than $30 million and which will be announced later this spring.

Students in Rocky Point’s Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School took a creative approach to commemorate the 20th anniversary of 9/11. Fifth graders in Leah Larson and Laura O’Mahoney’s class used shoeboxes to create dioramas and designed Freedom Towers using other materials, including cardboard, Styrofoam and
even Legos. “Each one is unique and is an amazing tribute to the heroes of that fateful day in American history,” Larson said. The students also held a commemorative museum walk in the classroom with patriotic music playing in the background. They walked around to view their fellow architects’
work and write positive comments on Post-Its. The class also included some literary selections to reflect on the important day in history, including “The Little Chapel That Stood” and “14 Cows for America.” They culminated the readings with a discussion on the themes of hope, selflessness and sacrifice.

Local Boy Scout Joseph Caracci of Troop 70 in Setauket recently finished his Eagle Scout project at the Jazz Loft, a total redesign of an outer area on the Loft’s property. Joseph designed the plans for some custom-made flower boxes and AC unit covers and reenforced an outer wall, converting the area from an unused side yard to a pleasant, useable space for the Jazz Loft patrons. Joseph is a resident of Stony Brook and currently
attends Stony Brook University. “The Jazz Loft was certainly fortunate to be the recipient of this amazing project and we are so grateful to Joseph and his crew,” said Jazz Loft Founder Tom Manuel. “He converted a previously unusable space into a wonderful outdoor space. Joseph has certainly exhibited the leadership qualities required to earn the Eagle Scout rank and I wish him much success.” Joseph not only designed
the plans, but also installed the flower boxes and AC units, along with help from some fellow Scouts he recruited. In addition, Joseph completely rebuilt the masonry wall in the rear of the Jazz Loft’s outer yard. The Jazz Loft is Long Island’s premiere destination for all things Jazz. Located in the heart of Stony Brook village, the Jazz Loft offers a full performance calendar of local, national and international artists.
Hope Children’s Fund Celebrates A Major Achievement
The board of directors of Hope Children’s Fund in conjunction with the Rocky Point Rotary Club is proud to announce the ordering of an Isuzu 25 passenger bus for the Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Orphanage in Meru, Kenya. The bus will provide safe transport to schools, medical appointments and food shopping for the 86 children of the home. The ordering of the Isuzu
bus is the culmination of the efforts of hundreds of donors. A GO FUND ME program initiated by H.C.F. board member Kyle Spillane raised thousands of dollars. In addition to the Rocky Point Rotary Club, the following Rotary Clubs contributed to the fundraising efforts: Port Jefferson, Westhampton, Stony Brook, Riverhead, Patchogue and Ronkonkoma. All clubs are members of Rotary District 7255, led by
District Governor Mary Ellen Ellwood. People’s United Bank is the bank of Hope Children’s Fund. This bank has waived all wire fees on all transactions to the orphanage in Kenya and continues to be a great partner. Three Village Students Hailed As Hexagon Honorees This annual project is aimed at spreading the meaning of interdependence through several themes by utilizing art in the shape of a hexagon. This year, 60 of the more than 300
submissions were selected for awards of excellence and/or honorable mention. Winning artists spanned all grade levels and came from communities across five continents, seven countries and many states.
In Three Village, the submissions were created last year by R.C. Murphy and P.J. Gelinas Junior High Schools’ National Junior Art Honor Societies as well as at Minnesauke Elementary School. The following students will have their work published at the Eastern Regional Exhibition in Scranton, Pennsylvania at the end of September, followed by a virtual zoom recognition.

On Sunday October 24th “Long Island Cars” will present the “Fall Harvest” Car Show & Swap Meet on the scenic grounds of Flowerfields Fairgrounds in Saint James. Bathed in autumn colors, Flowerfields Fairgrounds, once a turn of the century flower farm, will be filled with classic and collectible automobiles including show cars from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, one-of-a-kind custom cars, antiques, exotics, muscle cars and imports. Show cars will compete in classed judging; trophies will be granted in more than fifty categories. Acres of vendors will be well stocked for this large end of the season show, where you can buy, trade, sell or swap auto parts, equipment, accessories and literature, plus a wide variety of cars will be for sale in the “Car Corral.” There is a pumpkin patch with free pumpkins for the kids. Benefits Of Leisure Activities
Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center
in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The
researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals.
A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problemsolving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.
