Miller Place Resident Honored On Wednesday, September 4th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker honored Miller Place resident and barbershop quartet leader Fred Conway at the General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature. Conway was joined by his fellow members of Antiquity Barbershop Quartet in singing the National Anthem at the beginning of the meeting. Fred is also a member of the Habormen Chorus. “It is an honor to have the opportunity to recognize Fred Conway and all that he has done and accomplished
within our community,” said Legislator Anker. “His kindness and talent has touched and inspired everyone he meets and I thank him wholeheartedly.” Fred Conway served as an educator and sports coach for various teams in the Miller Place School District, earning himself the title of “Coach of the Year” several times throughout his tenure and a nomination for the Miller Place Athletic Hall of Fame. Fred currently serves as the Long Island Zone President of the New York State Retired Teachers’ Association.
Fred Conway was recently honored at the worldwide Barbershop Harmony Society in Salt Lake City, Utah for 50 years of talented service. The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. This organization truly makes a difference in the lives of seniors nationwide. Often the elderly gets overlooked or they simply can’t seem to achieve their goals on their own. This is where Twilight Wish steps in. Judy was a local wish recipient from Kings Park. Her wish was to visit her mother in Rochester and take her to her favorite restaurant. Judy received round-trip plane tickets, a hotel stay, a car rental and a gift certificate to her mother’s favorite restaurant from this foundation! The process of applying to be a wish recipient is fairly simple. You can visit their website at www. twilightwish.org and click on the “Wishes” tab followed by “Request A Twilight Wish”. From here you can start the process. Applications can be submitted for yourself or on behalf of someone else. The foundation has a committee that meets on a monthly basis to review new applications and they determine the eligibility of the applicants and wish requests. If approved, the foundation will grant the wish as funding and resources become available (if they are not already available).

Rocky Point High School held its annual memorial ceremony that honored the victims and heroes of 9/11 on Sept. 13, including four Rocky Point High School graduates. The assembly program featured guest speakers and recollections of the day that changed the course of American history. Organized by social studies teacher Rich Acritelli, high school students and staff members listened intently as honored guests – Lila Nordstrom, an advocate for affordable health care for young adults affected by 9/11, New York City Police Officers and first
responders Anthony Flammia and Tom Wilson and Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon Jr. – shared comprehensive and personal accounts of heroism as well as the physical and emotional after-effects of that tragic day. The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard presented the colors at the ceremony and members of Post 6249 Rocky Point Veterans of Foreign Wars were in attendance. Senior Colin Kotarsky, president of the high school’s Varsity Club, also addressed the audience and honored
guests. “Boatlift,” a short documentary about people who risked their own lives helping to rescue more than 500,00 by sea immediately following the World Trade Center attacks highlighted American’s strong determination and inclination to help one another. The touching tribute ended with songwriter Alan Jackson’s emotional song “Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning.” “It is extremely important that we recall the moment that our nation was attacked and remember our four lost graduates,” said Acritelli.

Ronda Gross, RN, MSN, vice president of Northwell NetworkCare and Mark Jarrett, MD, SVP, chief quality officer for Northwell Health, have each received the Doctor Chandler award from the New York State Troopers Police Benevolent Association (PBA), in recognition of their outstanding medical expertise and development of the highest level of care for New York State Troopers and their families. Both Ms. Gross and Dr. Jarrett have worked with the State Trooper Surgeons, a division of the official union of New York State Troopers – the NYS Troopers PBA, for several years. They have each played a direct role in the creation of the PBA’s Statewide Health Care Navigation Service, providing necessary assistance, to some 15,000 Troopers and their family members. In doing so, both Ms. Gross and Dr. Jarrett have protected those who protect the people of New York. Ronda Gross, who serves as a medical liaison to the medical care team, has played a direct role in guiding access to care for many NYS Troopers. Her relationship with the New York State Troopers began in September of 2015 when she was asked to initiate a referral relationship with their organization. In response to that request, Ms. Gross created the NYS Troopers and PBA Hotline a dedicated line to the clinical care team of Northwell registered nurses available 24/7 to assist New York State Troopers. NYS Trooper Sergeant John Antonelli serves as an example of this collaborative relationship. After sustaining critical injuries in the line of duty, Sgt. Antonelli underwent several complex surgeries at Lenox Hill Hospital. From the beginning of
his health crisis, Ms. Gross and her team took the lead in organizing his hospital stay, scheduling his medical appointments and surgeries, even participated in a Trooper escort upon discharge. It was thanks to the ongoing collaboration of each team involved in his care that, Sgt. Antonelli was able to leave the hospital after five days of inpatient care on his own to continue his recovery at home. “In health care we’re here to serve, much like the New York State Troopers protect and serve,” said Ronda. Gross. “Receiving this award is an honor that validates what we do every day at Northwell NetworkCare, providing the best possible care for everyone.” Dr. Mark Jarrett, who served as a Trooper Surgeon for the past four years, is now a chief medical administrator on the advisory board of the State Trooper Surgeons program. In this capacity, Dr. Jarrett was instrumental in developing a transport system for Troopers in need, either moving them from one health system location to another or bringing them home following hospitalization. In addition, Dr. Jarrett has also served on the NYS Troopers business leadership committee. “We are honored to receive this award from the NYS Troopers PBA,” said Dr. Jarrett, “The opportunity to help those who serve and their families is our reward.” “Northwell Health continues to be a stellar option for many of our NYS Troopers and we sincerely appreciate the relationships we have built with Ronda Gross and Dr. Mark Jarrett,” said Michael Brooks, Director of Medical Operations for the State Trooper Surgeons
Program. “They have both played an invaluable role in developing key communication protocols for our healthcare navigation program, helping patients gain access to the right care at the right time. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (State Parks) announced today that the agencies are holding the first-ever Women’s Fishing Expo at Belmont Lake State Park on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. “Women are a vital and fast-growing segment of New York’s angling and outdoor recreation community,” DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos said. “The Women’s Fishing Expo will give participants the skills and knowledge necessary to feel confident about getting outdoors and fishing, and hopefully introduce a new generation of women and girls to this amazing sport.”
State Parks Commissioner Erik Kulleseid said, “Fishing is an enjoyable way to interact with New York State’s beautiful natural surroundings throughout the year. I thank our partners at DEC for helping introduce more women to this delightful and lifelong sport.” The Women’s Fishing Expo will provide handson instruction and experiential learning in a fun and supportive environment. This event will be run primarily by female anglers, deckhands, and fisheries scientists, and women-owned businesses and fishing clubs are also encouraged to attend. Although the primary focus will be on women and families, all interested anglers are encouraged to
attend. Expo activities begin at 10 a.m. and are provided free of charge. Participants will be able to learn about fishing opportunities on Long Island and statewide, fishing basics and intermediate fishing skills, basic knots, fish filleting, fly-fishing demonstrations, casting demos, fisheries management information, shellfishing information, and other fishing-related activities. According to the most recent National Survey of Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife-Associated Recreation conducted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, women now make up more than 25 percent of all anglers, a number that has increased over the last several decades.

Coming out of the shadows of history are four “Courageous Women of the Revolutionary War” who will be showcased at one day only, first of its kind live theatrical performances at four of Ward Melville Heritage Organization’s (WMHO) historic properties September 28 from 10 am to 4 pm (rain date September 29). This will be the first time these historic homes have all been open at the same time. The critical roles women played during the war and the rich history of the Three Village area will be featured as well. Each of these sites is listed on the National and State Register of Historic Places and has its own connection to the American Revolution. Based on historical literature and oral histories from the Three Village area, the general public will be invited to take a guided tour on a journey back in time to the years that also helped spearhead the Women’s Suffrage Movement. Visitors will be greeted by a character in the first person who will
explain her personal fears and tribulations learning to survive during the war. At The Thompson House, c. 1709 guests will meet Doctor Samuel Thompson’s wife, Phoebe Thompson; Rebecca Mills Brewster, wife of Joseph Brewster (cousin of Spy Ring member, Caleb Brewster) will be at The Brewster House, c. 1665; a Grist Mill “Dusty” at the Stony Brook Grist Mill, c. 1751 and Ruth Mills, the wife of Culper Spy, Jonas Hawkins will be at The Mount House, c. 1725. These live performances will take place in the middle of the conflict, forcing guests to consider, “What would you do during these treacherous times?” The British have taken hold of Long Island. Many husbands and young men are arrested and enslaved on prison boats in New York Harbor. Innocent boys are forced into service for the British Army. Wives, mothers and daughters are alone, protecting their children and property. There will be three tours:
11 am, 1 pm and 3 pm and guests will be transported to the performances by trolley. Each tour will be 1 ½ hours long. The cost will be $40 pp. The mission of the program, made possible by a grant from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation, is to inspire and educate the public about the contributions of these valiant women while fostering an appreciation of the Three Village region and its cultural heritage. Gavin’s research was in the Collider-Accelerator department, Grant’s project used artificial intelligence to find chromaticity values from the lab’s Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and Monica worked with a leader in the Brand Management department in the highly competitive six-week research program.
