The 2014 Pink Rock Classic golf tournament will take place on Monday, October 6th at the Port Jefferson Country Club at Harbor Hills. The event benefits the Fund for the Uninsured at the Fortunato Breast Health Center at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital. The Fund for the Uninsured was established to provide access to state-of-the-art breast screenings and diagnostic procedures for patients without health insurance. are great and all, but nobody could replace my mom, dad and brother. They are the foundation to what will hopefully be my success. My mom and dad are the driving force in my life. I can’t wait until I see them during Parents’ Weekend, because somebody needs to do my laundry! Although I’m just kidding about the laundry, the idea that I miss the little things about home rings true. I miss my bed. I miss my car. I miss my old life. With that being said, I’m really liking the new life which I have formed here.

The kids on my floor are like family to me, and I’ve only been here a month. We are all in this together, and the communal sense of commitment has brought us closer together. I feel as though we know what each of us are going through, so bonds have become strengthened. The guys on my rugby team have been more than friendly as well. We are a team, and during games I can always expect them to have my back. I’m very excited to see what the rest of my four years of college have to offer.

Say What? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I am the queen of misunderstanding song lyrics. Which, for someone who has what I would call a fairly deep appreciation for words, is a bit odd. It just goes to show that the art of enunciation is going the way of cassette tapes and CDs – lost, down the drain, nonexistent. It’s funny, with the advent of apps like Pandora and Spotify, most lyrics are just a glance away. To say my interpretation of them

has been slightly off is putting it mildly. Pearl Jam? Forget it. Read the lyrics – pure poetry; listen to them – and you’re left a bit confused. Rap is another genre that I’ve always had a problem translating. While the delivery may be impressive, there are times when you question whether what you’re listening to is English or not. Listen to the censored version and, well, there goes most of the lyrics altogether. Country, while one of my least favorite choices

– please, no hate mail from the country lovers – seems to have it right when it comes to properly conveying the message at hand. If only the sound was a bit less… twangy. Ah, but that’s what makes the musical merrygo-round so fun, isn’t it? Styles for everyone, and a million different ways to access them. What did we do before all this technology? Oh right, we listened to the radio and misunderstood the lyrics. The good old days.

Museum Receives Funding The Long Island Museum in Stony Brook is proud to announce it has received generous support from Farm To Table Catering by Filomena to provide underserved schools with reduced admission for field trips. Knowing the extensive costs associated with taking field trips, the museum created the reduced fee initiative last year, providing the opportunity to make field trips a reality for more than 200 underserved students. With more than 1,400 students participating in last year’s program, the initiative was hugely successful, prompting the museum to continue

seeking funds to extend the program into the new school year. Securing additional funding so that even more students may take advantage of this opportunity is a museum priority. Museum education programs are vital resources for Long Island schools. Designed to support New York State and National learning standards, Long Island Museum school programs, currently serve more than 12,000 students, are a core service to the community and are built on collections of national importance. Kiera Alventosa, a Setauket 10th grader and Ward Melville Heritage Organization Youth Corps member, recently took the past and brought it into the future in an ingenious way. For her Gold Award Girl Scout project Kiera researched, restored, replanted and added QR Code tags to a medicinal herb and flower garden at the historic Thompson House, c. 1709, once home to American patriot and physician Dr. Samuel Thompson. Dr. Thompson’s patients ranged from Culper Spy Ring members to slaves. The herbs and flowers featured in the garden such as Jacob’s Ladder, Foxglove,

rigorous requirements set by the scholarship program. “We are extremely proud of the accomplishments of these talented high school students,” Superintendent Cheryl Pedisich said. “Their hard work and dedication demonstrate a strong commitment to achievement. There are three sections in the garden. One is dedicated to Native American medicine, one to slave medicine and another to colonial medicine. Each of these cultures has had a specific relationship to medicine that has contributed to our collective knowledge today. Kiera also produced a brochure entitled Thompson House Healing Garden, which lists in detail each of the 32 herbs and flowers planted and

their medicinal uses. Student Athletes Volunteer For one such game on September 6th, 21 Port Jefferson athletes traveled to the Miracle League with Coaches Dinarae Camarda, Amanda DiPietro and Jesse Rosen to serve as buddies to the Miracle League athletes. “The event was extremely positive for all parties

Students Perform At Ceremony The Edna Louise Spear Elementary School’s select choir, led by Jessica Pastor, performed at the Port Jefferson Fire Department’s September 11th ceremony, which was held at the firehouse. During the somber

personal stories and describe the worldwide effects. Each guest spoke on the facts of the attack and connected with students through a narrative that provided thoughtful insight and a deeper understanding of the political, social and emotional movements. This year’s speakers included Frank Tepedino, a former major league baseball athlete who played for the Yankees, Braves and Brewers, and played alongside Mickey Mantle, Hank Aaron, Thurman Munson, Bobby Murcer and Bobby Cox. Following his baseball career, he began working for the New York City Fire Patrol that worked in conjunction with the New York Fire Department on 9/11. Tapedino worked with the other rescue workers to locate survivors and to help with the clean up

operations. In addition, Chris Hardej provided a harrowing account to students as he worked on the 82nd floor of the World Trade Center during the attacks. The first plane hit the towers ten floors below his office and with his co-workers, walked down the stairs and helped others get of this building before it collapsed. Directly after these attacks, he became a lieutenant colonel in the New York Air National Guard 106th Rescue Wing and was placed on deployment to protect the nation. Chris has been sent over seas several times and just recently retired from the military. He currently donates his time to give speeches and tours of the Ground Zero site. Helping Fellow Athletes More then 40 studentathletes from the Rocky Point School District came together and volunteered their time at a Miracle League of Long Island baseball game. Members of the boys soccer teams, led by varsity Coach Joe Camarda, junior varsity Coach Rich Butzke and middle school Coach Pete Costa, participated as BUDDY (Because Unbelievable Dedication Deserves YOU) helpers to the Miracle League athletes. The Rocky Point soccer squads assisted Miracle League athletes throughout the day by ensuring their safety on the playing field, guiding

them through their at bats and the running of the bases. Camarda organized this community service outreach program. “Having our student athletes volunteer in a program as special as Miracle League will be something that we will continue to do as a soccer program annually,” he said. “It provides students with a chance to give back and mentor others using their athletic skills.” The Miracle League of Long Island’s mission is to establish and sustain baseball programs for people of all ages with disabilities and is founded

on their strong belief that “everyone deserves a chance to play baseball.” The League aims to help players develop social skills and increase self-esteem while simultaneously promoting community support and sponsorship for the league.   Miracle League gives children with special needs a chance to play in an accepting and nonjudgmental environment. Not only is this an important outlet for the players, but it also gives the BUDDY volunteers a chance to see the struggles of the children involved.

Rocky Point High School students had the opportunity to learn of the heroism and tragedy of the events of September 11th through the perspective of those who have served our nation and experienced the day first hand. Event organizer and social studies teacher Richard Acritelli explained the mission of this program. “The importance of 9/11 is seen every day with our students walking by the memorials of our four lost graduates from this day,” he said. “Over the years, the student body has been very receptive to learn about this date and its impact as described by different speakers that have addressed them.” Decorated veterans, first responders, September 11th survivors and active duty service people gathered to share their

History Through The Lens

Remembering Those Lost Schools throughout the Three Village Central School District paid tribute to the brave men and women who lost their lives on September 11th, 2001 in different ways on the day’s 13th anniversary. While teachers in classrooms districtwide discussed the tragic events surrounding that horrific day, Gelinas and Murphy junior high schools held ceremonies to allow students and staff members to pay their respects. Outside Ward Melville High School, Old Town Road was lined with American flags to show solidarity and pride. At Gelinas, student Liv Halvorsen led the entire

building in the Pledge of Allegiance. Principal William Bernhard and Assistant Principal Corinne Keane asked for a moment of silence to honor all those who were lost on that day. Members of the Gelinas Chamber Choir, along with eighth and ninth grade band members performed at the tribute. “The majority of you weren’t born yet when this happened 13 years ago,” Murphy Principal Vincent Vizzo told his students. “You touch my heart with the way you act as a Murphy family.” At Murphy, military personnel were on hand for the flag raising. There was also a piece of metal from

the World Trade Center displayed inside the school for the day. After introductory remarks from Vizzo, the Murphy chamber choir and chamber orchestra performed “America the Beautiful.” There was a moment of silence, and the bell rang four times. Assistant Principal Kevin Finnerty talked about 9/11’s impact. “The events of that day forever changed the lives of millions of people,” Finnerty said. “We will always look back at Sept. 11th, 2011 with sadness, but today, we gather to honor those heroes who lost their lives.”

Student Investment

At the age of 10, Dan Scarda already had an understanding of the stock market, as he started a hedge fund with his friends. With Scarda at the helm, the group saw a 33 percent return on their investment. Now a senior at Port Jefferson’s Earl L. Vandermeulen High School, Scarda intends to teach his peers the ins and outs of the market through a new high school group called the Investment

Club. The club, which will be overseen by middle school Spanish teacher Bob Ferenga, is already gaining popularity among students who attended mock meetings as part of Scarda’s effort to get the club off the ground. “He did a lot of ground work to get this started,” Principal Dr. Matthew Murphy said. To bring the club to fruition, Scarda gathered student signatures, secured school board approval and enlisted the help of local stock market guru Bill Russell, who is volunteering his time to work with club members. According to Scarda, the club members will not only learn more about the financial industry throughout the year, but will also compete against other schools as part of

Newsday’s stock market competition, where students must build a fictitious portfolio. Scarda intends to have his club win, and win big, by turning $100,000 in fake money into $1 million by the end of the school year. His strategy is to have the club invest prudently by carefully researching investments through the Bloomberg mobile application, which sends students market reports and notifications. Aside from leading the Investment Club, Scarda serves as an officer in the student organization and is a member of the school’s baseball team. Hero Quilt

In honor of the heroes of September 11th, secondgrade students at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School in the Port Jefferson School District crafted a paper hero quilt that will be displayed in the school’s main hallway. As part of the project, students were instructed

to design a patch with illustrations and descriptions of a hero in their life. Selections included moms, dads, uncles and grandfathers who served during wartime. “I picked my Papa because he was in the war,” said Mia Cormier, a student

in Laura Kelly’s class. Matthew Miele, also a student in Ms. Kelly’s class, said he selected both of his parents as his heroes because “they always help me with stuff.” The day of remembrance included all students participating in a discussion about what a hero is.

Rare Artifacts Return

Whaling artifacts related to the history of Long Island are a fairly rare item today. When they do appear on the market, collectors fight hard to acquire them. Items specifically related to Greenport – one of Long Island’s active whaling ports during the 19th century – are even harder to find. So what to do when a group of items relating to one of Greenport’s most prominent whaling families hits the auction block? Collaborate. “It seemed like a nobrainer,” stated Geoffrey K. Fleming, Director of the Southold Historical Society, “to try and bring together a couple of groups

that together might be able to acquire these items,” he continued. The items in question were a collection of papers, account books, log books, and even a Walrus Tusk relating to the 19th century whaling activities of David Gelston Floyd of Greenport, builder and owner of the wellknown stone mansion, Brecknock Hall. Fleming discovered just by chance that the items were being offered for sale at auction by a Floyd descendant. “I emailed the auction house in New Hampshire about something else and they happened to mention in passing that they had

these items coming up – I was stunned.” Fleming immediately recognized the importance of the items, having just written a history of the Floyd family and Brecknock Hall for the Brecknock Hall Foundation, where Fleming serves on the board. He began talking with some of his contacts at the foundation, along with Peconic Landing, who owns the hall today. “Everyone was very excited, so we arranged a meeting to strategize what we should do, with only a few days before the auction was set to happen,” stated Ted Webb, President of the Brecknock Hall

Foundation. “I thought this is an opportunity we should not pass up,” stated Bob Syron, President and CEO of Peconic Landing. In the end, everyone pledged a certain amount of money towards trying to acquire the papers. Additional monies were secured through a donation from the Reichert Family Foundation. The auction itself was a bit harrowing. “I was bidding by phone for the group, and there was a great deal of interest during the sale in the items we wanted,” stated Fleming. Nearly all of the items went quickly past their estimates. But in the

end, the group succeeded in getting all the lots they were interested in. Among the more important items acquired were the partial account book of the whaling ships “Italy” and “Pioneer,” 1844-1852; the account book of the whaling ship “Prudent,” 1856-1859; and the log books of the whale ships “Prudent,” 1856-1859, and “Italy,” 1854-1859, all of which sailed form Greenport during the 1840s and 1850s. “We were very pleased with the result of this effort,” continued Webb. “It just goes to show that while none of us alone could have hoped to

acquire these materials and bring them back to the North Fork, together it became possible,” continued Syron. The Items will be jointly owned by the Brecknock Hall Foundation and the Southold Historical Society and will be housed at the Society’s archive in Southold, where they will be made available to researchers. Making The Grade A number of Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students have earned Advanced Placement Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on AP exams taken last May. In total, 26 students were named AP Scholars, 20 earned the title of AP Scholar with Distinction, 11 were named AP Scholars with Honor, seven were ranked as National AP Scholars and one student was recognized with an AP International Diploma. To earn Scholar recognition, students are required to score a 3 or higher on three or more AP exams; to be recognized as a Scholar with Honor, students must earn a 3.25 on all AP exams taken; for a Scholar with Distinction award, students must receive an average score of 3.5 on all AP exams; and to be named a National AP Scholar, students must earn an average score of at least 4 on all AP exams taken. Students who receive an AP International Diploma must score a 3 or higher on five or more AP exams in three or more subject areas. The district’s AP program provides students with college-level rigor in a high school setting. The program caters to about 150 students and offers 300 AP exams each year. It gives students the ability to not only earn college credits, but also demonstrate to colleges that

they’re willing to go beyond minimum high school requirements by taking on a more rigorous AP course load. Port Jefferson currently provides 17 AP courses, including popular AP classes such as AP Bio, AP Calculus
