Ushering in the Equinox By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Ok, now it’s official. Autumn can commence. Why? Because today is the actual autumnal equinox, the moment all those fall fanatics have been eagerly anticipating since, well, probably since last autumn. I know September 1st is the unofficial introduction of all things pumpkin spice, but, believe it or not, there are a few more factors to consider when introducing a new season. For instance, cooler weather, the start of football and “Sunday Fundays,” playoff baseball, fall TV premieres… all things that were absent as of September 1st. And, while Halloween merchandise

has been on the shelves since July, guess what? It’s still over a month away. And Christmas – don’t even get me started on that. Three months to go. Three MONTHS. Plenty of time. No need to make those lists and check them twice quite yet. And yet… as I write this, the temperature sits at a positively summery 81º - perfect for pumpkin picking, hayrides and corn mazes… if all those things took place on a beach. But no worries, the season is still young – plenty of time for the autumn chill to settle in and the boots and scarves to be dragged out of the closet for that first brisk afternoon walk through the fallen foliage.

‘Tis the season of fall festivals and Oktoberfest celebrations, of raking and home improvement projects, of toasty evenings spent curled up with a (pumpkin) spiced latte and a book. Sure, it has its benefits. If you like that sort of thing. Me, I’ll be the one walking along the shoreline at the beach, camera (or iPhone) in hand, trying to capture the perfect autumnal sunset shot. I’ll get into the spirit eventually. Maybe once October hits. I might even check out the Halloween merchandise. And start making my Christmas list… Nah, who am I kidding. That’s what Black Friday is for.

NMSC is proud to partner with UNCF, the nation’s largest and most effective minority education organization, to establish the UNCF Achievement Capstone Program. For more than 70 years, UNCF has

worked to get students to and through college, and awards more than $100 million in scholarships annually. This program will further expand UNCF’s reach to AfricanAmerican students across the country who will benefit from the honor, recognition, and financial assistance accompanying these awards. In the half century since the National Achievement Scholarship Program was

created, more than four million Black Americans have entered the program, and approximately 228,000 have received program recognition. Of those honored, more than 34,000 of the most outstanding participants were chosen to receive Achievement Scholarship® awards worth about $108 million. Currently, about 3,200 of these young men and women are

undergraduates at 300 colleges and universities across the nation. Since the National Achievement Scholarship Program’s funds will be redirected to provide awards for college graduates, Black American high school students will no longer have the opportunity to enter the National Achievement Scholarship Program. However, they can still compete

Agenda Statement Adopted

During its meeting on September 8th, the Port Jefferson Board of Education unanimously adopted a statement detailing its joint stance on Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Educational Reform Agenda. The three-page document, which is posted on the district’s website, reflects the board’s opinion as it relates to Common Core Standards, high-stakes assessments and teacher/principal performance evaluations. “This statement echoes the consensus of what the Port Jefferson Board of Education believes

about three core issues facing our state’s school systems,” said Mark Doyle, Board member and chair of the curriculum committee, which drafted the statement. In part, the declaration states that Common Core Standards are a “significant step forward in providing a sound curriculum for our students;” but goes on to note that the “Common Core Assessments have been prematurely implemented [and] are not directly aligned with the curriculum.” The statement further requests that the Board of Regents review the

assessment program to ensure that the level of rigor is appropriate for grade levels being tested; that the data generated from exams is fully released to school districts in a timely manner and that new APPR requirements be delayed in order to best “develop a plan that maintains local control and more accurately reflects the performance of our teachers and principals.” The district plans to submit the statement directly to the new Commissioner of Education and Board of Regents.

Baseball Field Opens Legislator Tom Muratore, along with other local elected officials and community leaders recently attended the much anticipated opening of the baseball field behind Grace Presbyterian

Church, located at 425 Hawkins Road in Selden. This is the first phase of developing of a 23acre parcel of land into a community park. The final plan includes walking trails, a playground, sun

shelters, fields, ample parking and a community area. The site was originally purchased by Suffolk County and transferred to the Town of Brookhaven for development.

HARBOR DAY CELEBRATION - The first Setauket Harbor Day celebration was recently held at Setauket Harbor. Activities during the day included kayak and paddle board demonstrations and boat rides. There were also history and ecology presentations that focused on the harbor.

Suffolk Victims Remembered Suffolk County’s 178 victims of the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks were remembered yesterday in a ceremony at the Gardens of Remembrance, a memorial site dedicated to 9/11 victims at the Armed Forces Plaza in Hauppauge. Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory joined Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and other county legislators in reading the victims’ names.

“On the 14th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, we remember the thousands who perished, the tremendous acts of bravery that followed, and the families who continue to mourn the loss of their loved ones,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “We grieve for all the victims, including the 178 who were Suffolk County’s own. As a final summer hurrah, the Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo (LIGF) hosted its Back to School Blast on Saturday, August 29th. Hundreds of visitors, including some from across the country, traveled to the park to experience reduced admission prices, face painting and all of the zoo’s traditional exhibits and shows. The guests also were presented with giveaways, such as notebooks from

Staples for the first 100 guests and coupon books from Tanger Outlets Riverhead. The mall also gave away one $100 shopping spree to Solomon Yakubov, of Fresh Meadows. He also received a stuffed giraffe courtesy of LIGF and in honor of the zoo’s mascot, Clifford the Giraffe. FEMA Extends Deadline The Federal Emergency Management Agency has extended the deadline for flood insurance policyholders to submit their Hurricane Sandy Claims for review. The last day to submit claims is now October 15th, 2015. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced today that any additional flood insurance proceeds up to $20,000 will not be treated as duplicative. Federal agencies cannot provide disaster assistance for losses covered by insurance. HUD’s announcement

stated that “this will eliminate the need for HUD grantees to reclaim assistance from these households or to repay those funds through nonfederal sources. To date, three out of four National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) claimants have received less than $20,000 in additional compensation from FEMA and will not face any possible repayment.” Roy Wright, FEMA’s Deputy Associate Administrator for Insurance and Mitigation, encouraged policyholders to call FEMA and request a review if they believe their

claims were underpaid for any reason. As of September 14th, nearly 14,000 policyholders have requested reviews of their Sandy flood insurance claims. “FEMA remains committed to making sure that every policyholder gets every dollar they are owed under their flood insurance policy. Already, thousands of policyholders have contacted us to have their claims reviewed and we have begun providing funds to those who were due additional payments on their claim,” Wright said.

“We are hopeful that HUD’s action to provide relief to the vast majority of those who are concerned about potential duplicative benefits will encourage even more policyholders who may have been initially reluctant to enter the process to do so,” Wright said. “In light of HUD’s decision to simplify this review and provide relief, we are extending the claims review deadline until October 15th. We hope by extending the deadline we are addressing any remaining concerns some may have about entering the claims

review process. The review process we have established is designed to be simple, fair, and accessible without paid legal assistance. FEMA is dead set on restoring trust in this important program and no one should be discouraged from having their claim reviewed.” Policyholders can call the NFIP’s Hurricane Sandy claims center at 866.337.4262 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), Monday through Friday to request a review. It is important to have your policy number and insurance company

name when you call. Policyholders also can go online to www.fema. gov/hurricane-sandynfip-claims to download a form requesting a review. The downloaded form can be filled out and e-mailed to FEMAsandyclaimsreview@ fema.dhs.gov or faxed to 202.646.7970 to begin the review process.
