On Wednesday, September 7th at the General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature, Legislator Sarah Anker and Legislator Kate Browning honored Nancy Nowaski-Roesler for her altruism and community service. Over the summer, Nancy organized two fundraisers that collectively raised over $36,000 for families in need. In June, she organized a Chinese auction fundraiser which raised over $20,000 for the Bonacasa family. Deborah Bonacasa’s husband, Staff Sergeant Louis Bonacasa, was killed by terrorist bombers in Afghanistan.

In July, only one month later, Nancy organized a spaghetti dinner fundraiser for the Brown family and raised over $16,000 to assist them with medical bills after suffering serious injuries in a car accident. “Nancy truly embodies the spirit of generosity and selflessness. She has gone above and beyond to help those in need and I am honored to recognize her hard work and dedication to the community,” said Legislator Anker. “Nancy is an incredibly giving and generous person that has done so much to help her fellow residents in need,” stated Legislator Browning. “I was proud

to join Legislator Anker in recognizing her service to her community and neighbors.” Nancy has been a lifetime resident of the Longwood community and has a long history of community service. She has been active with the Ridge Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, Ridge Civic Association, church committees, Longwood PTA, Longwood Veterans Memorial Committee, and the Longwood Victory Garden. appointed by Principal Christine Austen at the end of the 2015-2016 school year, will serve as a liaison between students and the board during the board’s monthly meetings. “Kyra is a perfect fit for this position,” said Austen. “She is responsible, displays leadership and is very involved in school activities.” In addition to serving as a nonvoting board of education student representative, Becker is captain of the varsity tennis team, class historian and a leader in her church youth group. Additionally, this winter,

she will be participating in a church mission to Africa, where she will help administer medication to AIDS victims. In the past, she assisted in the construction of a home for a family in Mexico. Becker, who intends to study business in college next fall, said this new position will further hone her public speaking and communication skills. “I think this will be a good experience,” she said. “I am very excited.”

attacks. Following these conversations, the students put themselves in the shoes of a future archaeologist who uncovered an artifact from the terror attacks many years later. They used these pieces as inspiration to draw a museum exhibit, which included a description of the artifact and why it is important in understanding 9/11. The completed pieces were displayed in the classroom and the adjacent hallway. Silence blanketed the auditorium at Rocky Point High School as they hosted a 9/11 remembrance ceremony for the building’s 11th- and 12th-grade students. The program began with the Rocky Point Veterans of Foreign Wars presenting the nation’s colors. Throughout the ceremony students heard

from two keynote speakers, Anthony Flammia and Owen McCaffery, who shared their personal 9/11 stories. Mr. Flammia spoke on behalf of the Fealgood Foundation about his experiences as a first responder on 9/11, the illness he continues to fight as a result of his work at Ground Zero and the health care lobbing efforts he has supported for 9/11 responders. Mr. McCaffery shared his experience as a police officer and spoke about Rocky Point graduate Michael Curtin who lost his life on 9/11. The two keynote speakers weaved messages of patriotism into their addresses as well as continued to encourage the students to never forget the events of that historic day.

Schools throughout the Rocky Point School District recently took time to honor the 15th anniversary of 9/11 with engaging classroom lessons, remembrance ceremonies and moments of silence. Rocky Point Middle School eighth-graders in Erica Alemaghides and Danielle Manley’s social studies classes created an artistic exhibit to showcase various artifacts found in the aftermath of the historic events of that day. The students began the multi-day project by studying the timeline of events that transpired on 9/11 as well as discussing the courageous actions of the first responders, the victims and how the country worked to move forward after the

As Suffolk County gears up to again partner with Catholic Health Services (CHS) – the Medal of Honor Title Sponsor on the Second Annual Marathon and Freedom Fest 2016, volunteers including physicians, nurses, advanced practice professionals, physical and respiratory therapists and more are preparing to again assist as race medicine providers for the 26.2 mile race, the half marathon and 5K challenge. The race, which will start and end in Patchogue Village, will take place at

8 a.m. on Sunday, October 30th, and is expected to draw runners from across the country and around the world. This year, the 5K challenge was added to attract additional runners of all abilities. Some 3,500 runners participated in last year’s marathon raising approximately $160,000 to support local veteran’s services. The funds were distributed to 19 organizations that provide services for Suffolk County Veterans. To encourage even more people to take part so that additional funds will be

It’s funny how many different forms the term “friendship” can take on these days. Gone is the time when having a new “best friend” every year of elementary school was the norm, replaced instead by a handful of fairly close friends and an infinite number of what can only be classified as acquaintances; those you may travel in similar circles with but, once the circle is broken, severed is the superficial connection forged as well. Even among those close friends, there are breakdowns. There are those who you may only see sporadically to grab dinner or catch a movie with, yet when you do get together, it’s like no time has elapsed at all. Then there are the friends you embark on daylong

moments and scenic shores. Of friends, both the lifelong variety and those who may only make a guest appearance along the way. And of course, Buddy, my very special finned friend, who holds a unique place in my heart the way that only a pet can. He may be contained in a bowl, but his personality shines through, and the connection is just as real as those established with friends of the “Human” variety. Month after month, I celebrate his “birthday,” the anniversary of his time in my home, along with the standard holidays that we have been fortunate to share with him. Friends may come and go, and the memories may fade over time; but in the many heartbeats in between, perfection can be found. You need only know where to look.

Presented by Astoria Bank, this year’s outreach will include an Art Show at the Port Jefferson Free Library from October 1st31st. The show is open to everyone and will have as its theme “A Good Day.” Submissions can be photographs, paintings, drawings or multi-media (no sculptures). All submitted work will be donations to Mather and will be sold for $50 starting at the Artists Reception at the Library on Oct. 5 from 6-8 pm. All proceeds will benefit the Fortunato Breast Health Center’s Fund for Uninsured

and Underinsured. 9/11 Tribute Five seventh- and eighthgrade students from Port Jefferson Middle School paid musical tribute to those who lost their lives on September 11th by giving a moving performance during the Port Jefferson Fire Department’s annual

9/11 memorial service. The students, Jack Reilly, Grant Samara, Nicole Schully, Noah Teaney and Lucas Welinder, led by music teacher and volunteer firefighter Christian Neubert, performed “The

Star-Spangled Banner” and “God Bless America” at the somber ceremony. The event was attended by members of the community and the Port Jefferson School District Board of Education and administration.

SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE - The Dolan Family Health Center held its 12th annual school supply drive on August 25th, providing backpacks and school supplies to 180 children who are patients at the health center. Funds for the drive are raised by employees at the health center and donations were provided by Astoria Bank, BAE Systems, the Meadowbrook Women’s Initiative, Park Shore Country Day Camp and individual donors.

READING OF THE NAMES - Suffolk County Legislator Tom Barraga, Major General N.Y.G – U.S.M.C. RET. recently participated in the reading of the names of residents of Suffolk County who lost their lives on September 11th, 2001 at the Twin Towers.
