The Magic of Color By: John McGowan

I’ve often wondered why we pick the colors we do Once mine was green, now it is blue Is it a mood thing or something imbued? Whatever it is, it has me amused So much of what we ultimately choose Hinges on feelings deep down inside Color excites, color delights Touching our souls with an array of insights.

with Jamie Lynn Ryan Autumn’s Eve And with that, summer’s final swan song is upon us, as the autumnal air seems to have taken up residence across this long island that we call home. Some will say the summer months flew by in the blink of an eye; others will say they dragged on unbearably. How drastic are the differences in perception from one person to another. It’s funny how things seem to move in fast forward once the school year gets underway. Halloween decorations have been out in full force for weeks, with Christmas not far behind. That spring cleaning that we’ve been putting off until fall is now begging for our attention. As the leaves begin to turn, can outdoor cleanups be far behind as well? In the entertainment world, gone are the evenings of summer concerts under the stars, replaced instead by nights spent in front of

the television as many of our favorite shows return from hiatus. That baseball season which once seemed endless on opening day in April is now nearing its final stretch, as playoff pictures begin to take shape. All this, while football season takes over, and each Sunday’s activities become dictated by the game schedule of your favorite team. Soon enough, all roads heading eastward will be jammed with traffic as the masses scramble to take advantage of each beautiful autumn weekend. Pumpkin picking, apple picking, hayrides, corn mazes… so much to accomplish in so little time. And yet, there is always precisely the same amount of time. It’s all in how we choose to use it. A good family friend of mine recently commented that we all tend to live as though we have this list of obligations

to complete, rather than taking a step back and simply experiencing each moment as it happens. There is very little we actually have to do; in fact, almost nothing is required within a particular time frame. And so, we can afford to relax a bit, to take our time transitioning, whether it is from one season to the next or something larger and more significant to our personal lives. So, while the calendar may indicate autumn just a few days from now, that doesn’t mean we need to give up enjoying the warmth of the sun, or throw away our remaining summer plants in favor of mums and pumpkins. All in good time. Autumn is a season of transition in itself, a cross-section of weather and activities, even fashion. A season of plenty. Plenty to appreciate. Plenty to embrace. Plenty to enjoy.

Life’s rewards come in many forms But for me, it’s far from the norm As a nurse, my job allows me to help Make a difference in someone’s life Whether it’s a parent, child, friend, mother or father, husband or wife Serious situations, some not fun No time to waste, but get the job done As you look into a patient’s eyes, you know they’re scared Comfort them, reassure them you’re there Just knowing this, they’re glad Time passes quickly, and does not stand still We work hard to get the patient better And no longer ill The day nears an end, the patients did well They’re on the mend A feeling of greatness is felt All in a day’s work, oh what the heck It’s just another paycheck! But not for me, it’s life’s rewards The patient recovered and is doing well They returned to follow up to report, “life is swell” So that you know Life’s rewards come in Many forms “It’s not always about the dough”

Long Island’s leading breast cancer walk, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, will be held on two dates and at two locations, starting on Sunday, October 15th, at Jones Beach State Park, 1 Ocean Parkway, Wantagh, and on Sunday, October 22nd, at Suffolk County Community College Eastern Campus, 121 Speonk Riverhead Rd, Riverhead. “With an estimated 70,000 participants at Jones Beach and several thousand more on the East End, Long Island hosts the largest attended event in the country,” said Patti Lestrange Mack, American Cancer Society Communications Director. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a noncompetitive, inspirational event that raises awareness and funds to end breast cancer and provide hope to ensure no one faces breast cancer alone. Individuals, companies, friends and neighbors can register to walk and fundraise by calling 631.300.3455, via email at LongIslandNYStrides@ cancer.org or online at

www.makingstrideswalk. org/longisland or www. makingstrideswalk/ easternlongisland. There is no fee to register, though contributions and donations are greatly appreciated. “The American Cancer Society Making Strides walk supports the fight against the second leading cause of cancer death in women,” says Patti Lestrange Mack, Communications Director for the American Cancer Society. “An estimated 252,710 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 40,610 will die from the disease this year.” Funds raised through Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk enables the American Cancer Society to invest in groundbreaking research; provide free, comprehensive information and support to those touched by breast cancer; and help people take steps to reduce their breast cancer risk or find it early when it’s most treatable. “Because of the determination of Making Strides supporters, the

American Cancer Society is there for people in every town affected by breast cancer, whether they’re currently dealing with a diagnosis, may face one in the future, or will avoid it altogether because of education and risk reduction,” said Katie Goepfrich of the American Cancer Society. “At the event, communities embrace a bittersweet mix of purpose – celebrating survivorship and paying meaningful tributes to loved ones lost. From research to education, prevention to diagnosis, and treatment to recovery, we provide support to everyone impacted by breast cancer.” Last year, an estimated 70,000 walkers from across Nassau and Suffolk county raised over $3 million dollars. Since 1993, more than 12 million supporters have raised more than $750 million in nearly 300 communities nationwide. For additional details, sponsorship opportunities, to form a team, register to walk or volunteer, please visit makingstrideswalk. org or call the American Cancer Society at 1.800.227.2345.

With so much loss and devastation left in Hurricane Harvey’s wake leaving Texas and its residents a long road of rebuilding and recovery, Homes By Mara Realty Founder, Owner and President Mara Navaretta of Woodbury and her team of agents have launched their own public Hurricane Harvey NonPerishable Food & Paper Goods Collection Drive. Now through Friday, October 13th, people are encouraged to drop off non-perishable foods and paper goods, such as toilet paper, paper towels and paper plates, at the designated collection drive box kept by the inside front

door of the agency, located at its new headquarters at 30 Berry Hill Road in Syosset, NY. Collection donation drop off times run from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Navaretta and her agents kicked off their collection drive by first making contributions themselves and are now encouraging the Long Island community to join them in donating non-perishable food items and paper goods to help people in Texas who are facing overwhelming loss and destruction. “I believe we all have a responsibility to be mindful

of what is happening around our country and of those in need,” says Navaretta. “What happened in Texas hit home for so many of us as it could have happened to any of us here on Long Island. Whether we have loved ones living in Texas or not, we as human beings need to extend our help and support for others in need in whatever way possible. We invite Long Island residents to make donations to our collection drive so we can extend a helping hand for those in Texas who have lost so much as they begin their long road to recovery. Beyond launching the Hurricane Harvey Non-

Perishable Food and Paper Goods Collection Drive, Navaretta and her agency have supported a number of other charitable initiatives since Homes By Mara’s establishment in 2010, which include sponsorship of a Hurricane Sandy Coat Drive, holiday coat and toy drives, The Ashley Wade Foundation’s Jake’s Jammies Drive and regularly donating to the Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation.

Members of Port Jefferson Middle School’s seventh- and eighth-grade orchestra paid tribute to those who lost their lives on September 11th,

2001 by giving a moving performance during the Port Jefferson Fire Department’s annual 9/11 memorial service. The students, led by

music teacher and Port Jefferson volunteer firefighter Christian Neubert, performed “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “America the Beautiful.”

Honoring 9/11 In honor and remembrance of September 11th, 2001, students and staff from throughout the Rocky Point School District took time to pause and remember the tragic events of that day during individual ceremonies,

activities and moments of silence. Thanks to an anonymous donor, a new tradition was created in the district this year. In advance of the 16th anniversary of 9/11, the sidewalk in front of Rocky Point High School was lined with many large

Civic Engagement assist people affected by Hurricane Harvey. Students and staff are encouraged to donate money to their respective English classes or in the main office through Friday, September 15th. All money raised will be donated to the Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund. Created by the company’s CEO, Howard Lutnick, in 2001, the organization’s mission is to support victims of terrorism, emergencies and natural disasters, including the recent victims of Hurricane Harvey. According to the relief fund’s website, 100 percent of the contributions will

go as direct financial aid to those in need and they will match up to $5 million of donations made. Many staff members at the middle school wore jeans to school on Patriot Day and each made a $5 donation. The ELA department also hosted a bake sale on September 11th and proceeds will be sent to the relief fund. To help out in the fundraising efforts of the middle school, please contact Kayleen Everitt at keveritt@portjeffschools. org or Deirdre Filippi at dfilippi@portjeffschools. org.

Online Auction Begins

The Village of Mastic Beach, New York, has begun a complete village dissolution of all government assets including Village owned real estate. The decision comes after the referendum on November 16th, 2016, when the residents of Mastic Beach voted to dissolve the village; citing rising taxes as the most pressing issue pushing voters towards dissolution. The liquidation of assets will be conducted through a series of continuous government online auctions. All sales will be coordinated and overseen by Buffalo, New York based online auction company Auctions International. The auctions will be ongoing and continue until December 20th, 2017 or until all items have been sold. “As of January 1st, the CIVIC ENGAGEMENT - Teacher Allison Giannusa oversaw sales at the Port Jefferson Village will no longer Middle School Patriot Day bake sale. Photo courtesy of: Port Jefferson School District exist,” cites Mayor of Mastic

Beach, Robert Miller. “Trucks, automobiles, heavy equipment, landscaping tools, mowers office equipment, and all village owned real estate are among the items people can bid on between now and end of December. The money collected from this auction will go to pay any debt owed of the people of Village of Mastic Beach so that we return to the Town of Brookhaven free of debt. The first group of items up for auction were posted September 7th of this year, and currently available for viewing and bidding on the Auctions International website www. auctionsinternational.com They are: public works construction equipment, double wide office trailer, office equipment, park benches and a lighted flag pole. In addition a Village wide real estate online auction including the

Village Hall and Village DPW building, a single family home and all of their surrounding property will commence October through November of this year. “Our goal through this dissolution is to help the Village get the best returns,” states RJ Klisiewicz, Operations Manager of Auctions International. “This is a great opportunity for community residents to bid and purchase village assets, some of which may hold sentimental value such as the park benches and flag pole. We encourage people to check back on the site often in the coming months as new items will continuously be listed.” For more information and to view and bid on these items visit: www. auctionsinternational. com.

Ward Melville High School senior Madeline Mastriano was selected as the only female student recipient of the Junior Angel Award during this September’s second annual Angel Awards. Madeline was honored

for her efforts in cochairing the Three Village Kids Lemonade Stand that she created five years ago with her brother Joseph, a freshman at Murphy. Through this effort, the students helped to rally their peers

from throughout the district and members of the community to raise $20,000 at the lemonade stand this summer. To date, the teen siblings have helped raise more than $36,000 for the Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. The Angel Awards are given to outstanding women in the community who are recognized for their charity work and who combine work, home life and volunteering. The ceremony serves as an opportunity for people to meet these incredibly talented and giving women and at the same time, be in attendance as the community thanks them for their tireless efforts on behalf of others. Hop Fest Set LI Hops, a 43-acre farm located in the North Fork wine region of Long Island will again host the Long Island Fresh Hop Fest - the largest fresh hop fest on the east coast - on Saturday, September 23rd. The event will offer sampling of special locally brewed beers made with locally grown and harvested hops, many brewed in small batches for this event only. Plus this year, attendees will also be able to enjoy locally crafted pumpkin beers like the Pumpkin Spice ale from Long Island’s newest brewery, Jamesport Farm Brewery; limited-release seasonal brews like Long Ireland Brewing Company’s Octoberfest, a Märzenstyle lager; or hopped cider from Stowe, Urban Farm Fermentory, Cidergeist, or Indian Ladder Farm Cidery and Brewery, visiting from

the Hudson Valley. The attendees will enjoy an afternoon of beer and cider sampling, hop farming education, and live music. The event will be held at the LI Hops farm located at 5873 Sound Ave, Riverhead, NY 11901 from 12:30 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 23rd. Tickets are on sale now at www.LIFreshHopFestival. com. Tickets include all sampling and a special glass taster to take home as a souvenir. A very limited number of tickets will be sold for this special event. Attendees must be 21+ to attend. Live music performed by local favorite, multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter, Dan Donnelly. Much like the way winemakers celebrated the good fortune of the harvest and created the world famous Beaujolais

Nouveau, American brewers have put a twist on that age old tradition creating a new craze in the beer world, Wet Hop/ Fresh Hop ales. “What a unique experience for local beer lovers to come to an event and see how local breweries like mine are using local hops in everyday production and to have the ability to taste the unique flavors offered by a fresh hopped beer,” said Greg Martin, coowner of Long Ireland Beer Company (Riverhead). “It will be a great showcase of the farming and brewing culture on Long Island,” he added. Included in this year’s impressive lineup: • Jamesport Farm Brewery, Fresh Hop Winedout, made with their home grown LI hops • Greenport Harbor Brewing Co., a Pale Ale

hop beers, also serving a Wet Hop Pils Cask Back for its second year, the Fresh Hop Festival will introduce attendees to local and regional brewers taking advantage of the homegrown hops and offer attendees the rare opportunity to taste versions of fresh hop beers alongside the traditional version of the same beer. These fresh hop-infused beers will be special limited-edition versions of favorite local beers -many of which are not available to the general public. Brewers will be there to explain how their creations came to life and how they chose what beers to fresh hop. There will be live music, food for purchase prepared by local Jamesport-based caterer Christopher Michael Catering, and educational seminars for all attendees

to enjoy. Due to the finite availability of these beers, tickets are limited, and being sold on a first come first served basis. The Fresh Hop Festival will be held on Saturday, September 23rd, from 12:30 to 4 p.m. at LI Hops farm located at 5873 Sound Ave, Riverhead. Tickets ($45) are limited and on sale now at www. Award-Winning Filmmaker An experimental film created by Jamie Nagel, a junior at Ward Melville High School in the Three Village Central School District, has been selected for this year’s All American High School Film Festival, which will be held in New York City on October 7th.

Jamie’s film, “Youth,” was based off a poem she wrote and will be screened in Times Square as part of the festival. Following the screening, Jamie will attend an awards ceremony and reception at the historical Kings Theatre in Brooklyn.

Three Village Central School District student filmmakers have been selected for this high honor for the past several years. Jamie created her film under the guidance of Ward Melville teacher Stephanie DiLorenzo.

COMMEMORATIVE WREATH - Students from the Horticulture Program at Eastern Suffolk BOCES Islip Career Center expressed their creativity and honored those lives that were lost on September 11th, 2001 with a wreath fabricated from red, white and blue flowers and adorned with ribbons and several American flags. The wreath is on display outside the building in the rock and flower garden also constructed by Horticulture students. The plaque that complements the wreath reads In Memory of All the Lives Lost on September 11th, 2001.

Honoring Victims On September 11th, Councilwoman Valerie Cartright joined with the Three Village and Port Jefferson communities to honor and remember those who perished during the attacks on our nation 16 years ago. The memorial events were well attended by residents, first responders and elected officials. Somber bells, a gun salute, poetry and orchestral music from Port Jefferson High School students served at the Port Jefferson Fire Department at their station house on

Maple Avenue. At 11:30 a.m. there was a silent service at the Brookhaven Town Hall 9/11 Memorial in Farmingville. The Councilwoman laid a wreath at the Setauket Fire Department Candlelight Ceremony in the evening. During the ceremony, Fire Department officials identified the names of those lost from the Three Village community on 9/11; including individuals, first responders, police and firefighters. The event was attended by families of victims, civic and faith based

community organizations. Councilwoman Cartright also visited the Port Jefferson memorial to citizens which includes the names of the nonservice member residents of Brookhaven Town who perished in the September 11th attacks. There the memorial plaques on stone structures list those names, and flanks the center memorial stone listing names of local first responders. Big Bird The largest living bird is the ostrich, which can weigh 330 pounds.

Golf Invitational The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) is pleased to announce its upcoming 37th annual R. Brinkley Smithers Golf Invitational. This landmark charity tournament will take place on Tuesday, October 3rd. Participants will have their choice of teeing off at Meadow Brook Club in Jericho, or Piping Rock Club in Locust Valley. As the drug epidemic is front page news almost every day, the important work of LICADD is more vital than ever. Named for LICADD Founder, R. Brinkley Smithers, the

tournament’s proceeds ensure that the services LICADD provides - from screening, intervention and referral services, to recovery support, prevention education, an Employee Assistance Program and mentoringall remain accessible to the individuals and families who are most affected by drug and alcohol abuse on Long Island. No one is ever turned away from receiving services due to financial hardship. This high energy, fast-paced event offers a challenging round on two of Long Island’s premier courses. It has also become so much more. Event Co-

Chairs, Michael Brennan, Bill Baum, and Jeffery Capazzi, agree on the appeal of the R. Brinkley Smithers tournament. Remarks Event Co-Chair and Board Chair, Michael Brennan, “R. Brinkley Smithers has earned a reputation as one of Long Island’s most popular charity golf tournamentshow fitting that it is dedicated to raising critical funds at the height of a national drug crisis with Long Island being especially hard hit.” Prizes will be awarded in team and individual categories, and participants will have their chance to try for a “Hole in One.”

With dozens of silent auction, live auction, and raffle prizes, everyone will feel like a winner, even if their scores are well over par. The live auction boasts playing opportunities at some of the country’s top courses, while the raffle features golf and vacation packages to far-away destinations. “Rest assured this is not your run-of-the-mill golf tournament,” explained Executive Director Steve Chassman, LCSW, CASAC. “It is an opportunity to provide hope and healing to at-risk individuals and the families who support them.” The annual fundraiser

offers several participation and sponsorship opportunities. Sleep Better, Stress Less (NAPSI)-Here’s eyeopening news: Recently published research from Oklahoma State University suggests that improving quality of sleep not only reduces stress, but also helps us manage everyday stress.

“When you’re stressed and tired, every aspect of your life is affected,” says lifestyle expert and spokesperson for the Better Sleep Council, Lissa Coffey. “Controlling stress and getting a good night’s rest start with

evaluating your lifestyle.” Dr. Douglas MacKay, N.D., vice president, scientific and regulatory affairs, Council for Responsible Nutrition, agrees: “Eating a healthy diet, taking vitamins and other supplements,

Autism Speaks Walk The Long Island Chapter of Autism Speaks, the world’s leading autism science and advocacy organization, will hold its 2017 Long Island Autism Speaks Walk event on Sunday, October 1st, at Jones Beach - Field 5. Proceeds from Long Island 18th annual walk will support Autism Speaks’ mission to promote solutions, across the spectrum and throughout the life span, for the needs of individuals with autism and their families. Autism Speaks Walk is the world’s largest fundraising event to

enhance the lives of people with autism today and accelerate a spectrum of solutions for tomorrow. The events are powered by the love of parents, grandparents, children, siblings, friends, relatives, and support providers for the special people in their lives living with autism. Funds raised help fuel innovative research and make connections to critical lifelong supports and services. In recent years, Autism Speaks has made a significant impact in the Long Island area. Through its Local Grants

Program, Autism Speaks has provided funding to innovative local service providers. They include: Long Island Advocacy Center, Inc., Long Island Children’s Museum, Adelphi University-Bridges to Adelphi Program and The Family Center for Autism – to name few for a total grant investment of $60,000 in 2016. “Long Island Autism Speaks Walk is helping fund vital services and innovative solutions that improve quality of life for people with autism in our community,” said Eddie Russo, Autism

Speaks Long Island Senior Coordinator. “We are eager to support crucial work by researchers, service providers, and medical experts, both close to home and all across the country.” Alpha Xi Delta proudly serves as the North American sponsor of Autism Speaks Walk.
