The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (State Parks) announced today that the agencies are holding the first-ever Women’s Fishing Expo at Belmont Lake State Park on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. “Women are a vital and fast-growing segment of New York’s angling and outdoor recreation community,” DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos said. “The Women’s Fishing Expo will give participants the skills and knowledge necessary to feel confident about getting outdoors and fishing, and hopefully introduce a new generation of women and girls to this amazing sport.” State Parks Commissioner Erik Kulleseid said, “Fishing is an enjoyable way to interact with New York State’s beautiful natural surroundings throughout the year. I thank our partners at DEC for helping introduce more women to this delightful

and lifelong sport.” The Women’s Fishing Expo will provide handson instruction and experiential learning in a fun and supportive environment. This event will be run primarily by female anglers, deckhands, and fisheries scientists, and women-owned businesses and fishing clubs are also encouraged to attend. Although the primary focus will be on women and families, all interested anglers are encouraged to attend. Expo activities begin at 10 a.m. and are provided free of charge. Participants will be able to learn about fishing opportunities on Long Island and statewide, fishing basics and intermediate fishing skills, basic knots, fish filleting, fly-fishing demonstrations, casting demos, fisheries management information, shellfishing information, and other fishing-related activities. According to the most recent National Survey of Fishing, Hunting and Wildlife-Associated Recreation conducted by

the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, women now make up more than 25 percent of all anglers, a number that has increased over the last several decades. The Women’s Fishing Expo coincides with National Hunting and Fishing Day, a designated Free Fishing Day in New York State, so the freshwater fishing license requirement for anglers age 16 and older is suspended. On Sunday September 1, 2019 Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright, members of the Amistad Long Island Black Bar Association and many other civil rights and community leaders and members met at the Port Jefferson Harbor for a historic and educational sail on the replica “La Amistad” slave ship. The original ship was the subject of 1839 slave revolt in which enslaved Africans from the Mende tribe of Sierra Leone revolted against their Spanish captors. The captives took control of the ship and directed the remaining crew to steer back to Africa, but the crew steered north, and La Amistad was captured off the coast of Long Island. “The events of the Amistad ship and the subsequent legal battles played a pivotal role in the United States legal system as well as on the

The ultimate determination of the freedom of the African slaves on the Amistad had a profound and lasting impact on the United States abolitionist movement,” stated Councilwoman Cartright, who also served as the Past President of Amistad Long Island Black Bar Association. “The Amistad ship is the namesake of our Bar Association which seeks to encourage and empower black law students and attorneys to diversify the legal profession and have their own profound and lasting impact on our legal system.” “The Amistad Long Island Black Bar Association, like the 53 Mende captives whose fight for freedom sparked an international battle about slavery more than 180 years ago, has tried to make the United States live up to the calls of liberty and equality promised by the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution,” said Amistad Bar Association Co - founder Victoria Gumbs Moore. The passengers on the sail included various

attorneys, community members and community activists. Among the group were longtime Long Island civil rights activists Eugene Burnett, 90, of Wheatley Heights, and his wife Bernice, 89. Burnett said “it was a beautiful afternoon, I was impressed with the amount of young people there and they were very attentive to the goings on. I was impressed with the historical information that was provided about the mindset of the slaves and slave masters at that time. I am very happy that we are keeping our untold history alive and well with our young people.” Amistad Co-Founder J. Stewart Moore said: “this was a great opportunity to reflect on the issue of 400 years of US slavery. We shall not forget; we won’t forget, and we shall continue the journey toward achievement; accomplishments and equality as Americans to the full extent of the law.” Historian and Executive Director and Curator of the Eastville Community Historical Society, Dr. Georgette Grier-Key, stated, “The collective

Town Demolishes “Zombie House” On September 4, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilwoman Jane Bonner were onhand when the Town demolished a vacant and abandoned “zombie house” at 61 Hagerman Landing Road in Rocky Point. The long-abandoned house was the source of resident complaints leading to numerous Town of Brookhaven housing code violations. It was demolished in accordance with Chapter 73 of the Town Code which provides a “fast track”

to rid neighborhoods of unsafe structures. The cost of demolition and debris removal is the responsibility of the property owner, and the Town places a lien on the property that is then placed on the tax bill. The County reimburses the Town and then they collect the money from the property owner. Supervisor Romaine said, “Nearly every community has seen an increase in “zombie” houses, and many are not secure. We have been very

aggressive in our efforts to issue violations and will continue to demolish these dangerous eyesores throughout the Town.” Councilwoman Bonner said, “When a house is neglected and allowed to deteriorate as badly as this one, it creates a hardship for everyone in the community and must come down. I commend our Law Department for their efforts to remove this eyesore and help clean up neighborhoods in my district and throughout Town of Brookhaven.”

REMEMBERING 9/11 - On Tuesday, September 11th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker joined the Rocky Point Fire Department in honoring those who lost their lives in the tragic events of September 11th, 2001. The memorial service was attended by elected officials, local community members and local fire departments. “Eighteen years later, the effects of what happened on September 11 are still being felt,” said Legislator Sarah Anker. “Through dedication to the lives lost and recognition of the courageous men and women, including firefighters, police officers, and first responders, we are able to recognize how tragedy inspires the best aspects of the human spirit. I encourage residents to visit this beautiful memorial that celebrates our steel resolve and provides reflection in honor of those lives lost on September 11.” The service took place at the Rocky Point Fire Department’s 9/11 Memorial which is located at 47 Route 25A in Shoreham, and features steel from the original World Trade Center.

To recognize the commitment and hard work of staff during the summer months, the Port Jefferson School District Board of Education honored members of the district’s technology, security, facilities and clerical departments at

The opportunity to contribute to the scientific community was just one of the highlights for three Port Jefferson students who participated in Brookhaven National Laboratory’s High School Research Program. Earl L. Vandermeulen High School senior Gavin Chambers, junior Grant Samara and 2019 graduate Monica Alexander were each paired with a BNL scientist who served as a

mentor for the advanced high school program. Gavin’s research was in the Collider-Accelerator department, Grant’s project used artificial intelligence to find chromaticity values from the lab’s Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and Monica worked with a leader in the Brand Management department in the highly competitive six-week research program. “Programs such as

these are exceptional collaborative opportunities for our students to further explore STEM studies at this worldrenowned institution,” said Jessica Schmettan, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. “We share in the pride of their research and continued efforts in pursuing these academic disciplines.”

Free Emergency Preparedness Training On Friday, September 27th at 11 a.m., there will be a FREE Emergency Preparedness Training at the Longwood Public Library (800 Middle Country Road, Middle Island) hosted by Senator Ken LaValle, Assemblyman Joseph DeStefano, County Executive Bellone, and Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker. all ages the tools and resources they need to prepare for disasters and respond accordingly. The foundation has a committee that meets on a monthly basis to review new applications and they determine the eligibility of the applicants and wish requests. If approved, the foundation will grant the wish as funding and resources become available (if they are not already available). Jackie, a local Long Islander, was nominated to be a wish recipient by her friend at work. Jackie works at Walmart and would walk to work and assist residents at her local nursing home while she wasn’t working. Her friends wanted to make it easier for her to get around. After the wish was received, James Ciervo and Barbara Ransom of the Greater Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce helped get Jackie a beautiful bicycle. They brought the bicycle to her workplace and the smile on her face was ear to ear! This foundation is presently looking for more wish applicants in the Long Island area. The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. This organization truly makes a difference in the lives of seniors nationwide. Often the elderly gets overlooked or they simply can’t seem to achieve their goals on their own. This is where Twilight Wish steps in. Although their headquarters are located in Pennsylvania, the foundation has chapters located around the nation. James Ciervo, who devoted much of his life to helping seniors, created their Long Island Chapter 15 years ago. His career was in the senior health care industry for many years and he continues to help seniors through the Twilight Wish Foundation today. The process of applying to be a wish recipient is fairly simple. You can visit their website at www.twilightwish.org and click on the “Wishes” tab followed by “Request A Twilight Wish”. From here you can start the process. Applications can be submitted for yourself or on behalf of someone else.
