Stepping Up To The Challenge
W
hen the staff at W.S. Mount Elementary School laid down the challenge for Minnesauke Elementary School to compete in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, they didn’t hesitate. Staff members, including Minnesauke Principal Brian Biscari, lined up in a big “M” and, one by one, dumped buckets of ice water on each other’s heads. Biscari was the final recipient, and two water coolersworth of ice water was splashed on him. Way to go!

Long Island Heart Walk Set More than four thousand Long Islanders are expected to join the American Heart Association’s Long Island Heart Walk on Sunday, September 21st to raise funds to fight heart disease and stroke, America’s No. 1 and No. 4 killers,. The annual event begins at 8:30 a.m. at Jones Beach, Field 5, in Wantagh. The non-competitive, three-mile walk includes teams of employees from local companies, along with friends and family members of all ages. “For every hour of brisk walking, life expectancy may increase for some adults by two hours,” said Ed Blaskey, TD Bank’s Market President for Suburban NY and Long Island and Chairman of the 2014 Long Island Heart Walk. “I look forward to working with Executive Leaders across Long Island to help raise awareness and funds
for the American Heart Association to continue its mission to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.” Heart Walk participants will experience three “communities” that feature relevant resources and activities. In an age where technology has overtaken society, it is only natural to pause periodically and wonder, at what cost? These days, most everything can be communicated via text, various messenger apps, social networks and emoticons, with little reserved for good oldfashioned person-to-person contact. As the masses jump on the latest smartphones and tablets the moment they’re unveiled, it is hard not to think how did we manage to exist before? Personally, I did not own a cell phone until the later college years, if even then. Prior to that, it was
payphones and asking the teacher for a pass to the Main Office to call home in an emergency. Nowadays, walk into any elementary school and smartphones are just as common a trend as the latest sneakers and accessories. What’s wrong with this picture? Plenty. First off, no eight year-old needs a smartphone. An old, hand-me-down standard cell phone in case of emergencies? Perhaps. And once you move on to middle school and high school, the potential for cheating, texting during class and surfing the web instead of paying attention to the lesson at hand skyrockets. I don’t care
what disciplinary actions are set in place; the integrity of the classroom immediately declines with each cell phone that enters. This is not to say that those in college or the workforce are any better equipped to balance the technology they “have to have” with a little thing called reality. No, we are just as likely to send 47 text messages rather than have a phone conversation, to use a cute little smiley face in favor of typing an entire word, to keep in touch via Facebook rather than schedule a lunch date... That said, I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of my newly pre-ordered iPhone 6 :)

A Big Year Each year, as fall approaches, I catch myself reflecting upon the past year. 2014 was a huge one for me, as it marked the beginning of the next chapter in my academic career. This year, I started at Villanova University. From what I can tell, Villanova is the right place for me. I’ve already gotten pretty involved, and I feel very welcome here. From the renowned orientation process, I was able to garner an understanding of the qualities that Villanova was founded upon - Caritas, Veritas, Unitas. These Latin words translate to mean Charity, Truth and Unity.
For nearly two centuries, Villanova has been producing bright minds using those three values. I’m proud to say that I have the opportunity to experience everything this university has to offer. As important as the transition to school was for me, this year wasn’t all about college. Over the summer, I strengthened bonds with friends and family. I’ve never felt tighter with my coworkers, because they finally stopped viewing me as a kid. My years on Fire Island have afforded me many things, including new employment opportunities and a unique outlook on life.
A few months ago, I graduated high school. This was a big marker in my life. My grandfather passed away in August. He was very important to me, and I think about him all the time. I went to the National Championships for Rowing this year. As the culmination of four years of hard work, it was something I will be forever proud of. On a less personal note, my community grew. We welcomed new neighbors, businesses and opportunities. In just a few short months, my life has changed dramatically. I guess you can say it has been a big year.

Ready To Learn
The Brewster House, c. 1665, the site of Culper Spy Ring activities during the Revolutionary War, will be the setting for the Ward Melville Heritage Organization’s newest educational program, “Become A Spy.” Considered the oldest house in the Town of Brookhaven, the Brewster House is located on Route 25A in Setauket, where the start of espionage in the United States actually began. American Patriot Caleb Brewster was a member of the Culper Spy Ring. Home to six
generations of Brewsters, Joseph Brewster operated the house as a tavern and general store, and also entertained British troops. The house is listed on the State and National Register of Historic Places. During their visit students will undergo “training” to become a member of the Culper Spy Ring. They will learn about the flow of information from Manhattan to Connecticut and get an introduction to invisible ink and the alpha-numeric code created by Benjamin Tallmadge. The program
also includes participation in an historic scavenger hunt. Geared to 4th-8th graders, the program is approximately an hour and a half long. Costs are $8 per student, $5 per chaperone and teachers are free. The program can be customized to fit student’s needs and levels and is aligned to meet Common Core Standards for Learning. Art students from Minnesauke Elementary School in the Three Village Central School District have been selected for special recognition at the 2014 International Interdependence Hexagon Project Conference. The project is a visual arts opportunity for young people ages 8-18 worldwide. It asks students to create art within the infinitely interlinking shape of a hexagon, a metaphor for interconnectedness. This is an opportunity for young people throughout the world to explore global themes, issues and ideas in school. The concept is that through critical thinking,
research and taking a stand on one’s beliefs and understandings, changes in attitudes, awareness and, subsequently, action can occur. Minnesauke won top honors in three categories: Most Effective All Over Interpretation, Most Creative Expression and Most Relevant to Theme. The students were also given two honorable mentions. Their work was submitted to the competition by art teacher Christine Becker. The students’ displays have been featured since September 5th as part of the Interdependence Day Hexagon Project Exhibit
in the Mall at Steamtown, located at 300 Lockwood Ave. in Scranton, PA. The talented Three Village students will also be honored at a recognition event on September 15th. “We are very proud of our young artists and grateful to Ms. Becker for providing them with the opportunity to participate in this creative project,” Minnesauke Assistant Principal Linda Messina said. “Our Minnesauke students swept the competition on this READY TO LEARN - Port Jefferson Middle School Principal Antonio Santana helps and won all three top a student open her locker on the first day of school. With books in hand, Port Jefferson’s Edna Louise Spear Elementary School, Middle School and Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students arrived for the first day of school on September 2nd ready to learn. Teachers and administrators welcomed all middle and high school students back to school as they arrived and headed off to their classrooms, but not before taking notice of a few changes. During the summer, the district installed new
curbing and speed bumps in the parking lot, replaced the auditorium’s carpet, built a new basketball court and replaced a few ceilings. That work was done with the help of a grant from Senator Kenneth LaValle. “It is nice to see all the kids back,” said Middle School Principal Antonio Santana, who assisted a few students with opening their lockers. “Everyone is smiling and we are ready for another wonderful school year.” At the high school, Principal Dr. Matthew

Murphy said everyone is prepared for the new school year and the students are already learning. E l e m e n t a r y school teachers and administrators gathered outside to welcome students with balloons and big smiles. Students were eager to meet their teachers and were excited to see their friends. “We are very happy to welcome back our students and are ready for a very productive year,” Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Bossert said.
Honored For Excellence
Jack Blaum, the security and safety coordinator for the Three Village Central School District, made a presentation to the Board of Education on September 3rd to discuss new security protocols in the district. The installation of surveillance cameras is complete, and there were already two cases at Arrowhead Elementary School where the new system helped identify those responsible. Blaum stressed a “team approach,” adding that if everyone works together, these situations can be quickly resolved. There are also new security vestibules outside of each building. Staff
members have color-coded identification cards that give them access, while visitors need to buzz in and show identification before being granted entry. New York State driver’s license readers create printed visitor badges for guests. There is also additional building coverage after school throughout the district. Two new people are now on patrol at each building from 2-10 p.m. Also, the district now has direct contact with the Setauket Fire Department, which Blaum said saves considerable time in case of an emergency. Both the police and fire departments have access to the district’s surveillance cameras as
well. Blaum also discussed how all staff receives SAVE (Safe Schools Against Violence in Education) training and a tutorial in the new lockdown procedures. Any staff member can call 911 or initiate a lockdown in the event of an emergency. Superintendent Cheryl Pedisich and board members commended Blaum for his diligence in making Three Village as safe as it could possibly be. “People are paying attention,” Pedisich said. “We are way ahead of the curve, and we should be very proud of that.”

Friendship Scouts
Friendship Scouts was the theme for the 2014 Summer Program at Eastern Suffolk BOCES Premm Learning Center (PLC). The inspirational message that guided all the activities was, “Helping a person will not necessarily change the world, but it will change the world for that person.” Having a food drive grew out of the theme and the inspirational message. Friends are supportive, and help build character, confidence, and community. Scouts are individuals who want to
make the world a better place to live. PLC students and staff were psyched about giving back and helping the community where the school is located. They managed to collect over 100 lbs. of non-perishable food items in just two months. The Greater Sayville Food Pantry was chosen to receive the donations because they serve the community of Oakdale, where the school is located, and the surrounding areas of West Sayville, Sayville, Bayport, Blue Point, and Bohemia.
Chestene Overdale, director of The Greater Sayville Food Pantry, was invited to PLC so the students could present the donation to her personally. At the assembly she said, “I are very proud to be here and thank you for wanting to have a food drive for us. I am also happy to introduce Healy Fallon, a student from the Bayport-Blue Point School District who accompanied me to this donation event, because he is performing community service at the Food Pantry.”

Staff Takes The Challenge When the staff at W.S. Mount Elementary School laid down the challenge for Minnesauke Elementary School to compete in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, they didn’t hesitate. Staff members, including Minnesauke Principal Brian Biscari, lined up in a big “M” on Friday afternoon and, one by one, dumped buckets of
ice water on each other’s heads. Biscari was the final recipient, and two water coolers-worth of ice water was splashed on him. Minnesauke students cheered and chanted the school’s name during the challenge. Biscari said the experience was excellent, and he made sure that other elementary schools in the district would get
the same chance. “It feels great,” Biscari said. “It’s a nice activity to bring our school together. I’d like to challenge our friends at Arrowhead Elementary School, Setauket Elementary School and Nassakeag Elementary School to do it as well.”

Not only are the effects of bullying on a child felt immediately, but they can also be lifelong – or even tragic. That’s why CAPS is inviting the community to support CAPS at its 2nd Annual Stand Up, Don’t Stand By 5K Walk/Run to End Bullying on October 5th, as part of National Bullying Prevention Month. Check-in starts at 8:00 a.m. at Sunken Meadow State Park in Kings Park; the race and walk will follow at 9 a.m. A Kiddie
Fun Run for children under 8 is scheduled for 8:45 a.m. The entry fee is $25 per person, $40 for family (up to 4 participants). Arrive before 8 a.m. for free parking.
