The Over 50 Fair, now in its sixth year, finds new ways to connect with Baby Boomers and Seniors each year. The annual event is the largest “over 50” expo on Long Island. This year’s event, on Sunday, September 27th, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Melville Marriott, introduces its newest addition, a Singles Lounge. “Every year, our single guests request a way to meet other singles. Seven in Heaven Singles Events will be facilitating this interaction in our new Singles Lounge, which will have music, a seating area, and icebreaker games several times during the day, such as Kings and Queens,” explained East Hills resident Barbara Kaplan, the Over 50 Fair director. The pain of losing a child is life changing. Many bereaved parents find solace in helping others through similar circumstances. After suffering the loss of her newborn, Michele Khan decided to give back to others whose babies are critically ill. In memory of her son, Dylan Joseph, who was born prematurely at Good Samaritan Hospital on January 6th, 2015, Michele

decided to bring care packages to other moms staying at their babies’ bedsides in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The support and compassion from the NICU staff helped get her through her loss. Michele has made several visits to Good Samaritan with thoughtful gifts for patients in pediatrics and NICU. She is already planning her Christmas donation.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) received more than $2,000 in donations from friends and family members in memory of Nicolette, who passed away from an overdose at 20 years old. With the heroin and opiate crisis raging, the demand for LICADD’s services has increased exponentially. Significant price drops in the street price of heroin on Long Island, have increased the number of young people who are using the drug. Calls to LICADD’s hotlines and requests for services mirror these increasing trends and beyond the sheer rise in numbers of young people and their families seeking heroin addiction treatment services, the rapid progression from snorting to injecting the drug is startling and obviously
increases the potential health consequences for users. This significant donation assists the Long Island community by providing additional services for families in desperate need of LICADD’s services. “Our friend Nikki died tragically at 20 years old – a funny, caring and beautiful soul. This year, in honor of her birthday, we raised these funds in the hopes of helping save another soul from being lost.” says Ilana Esquenazi, Nikki’s best friend. For over 59 years, LICADD has successfully delivered evidence-based programs designed to prevent and treat substance abuse and addiction. Alone in a Bowl: My Saga By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s been days, and still no sign of my human. No light on in the kitchen. No food pellet delivery at dinnertime. No – dare I say it – bath time. Nothing. Where did she go? Alone in my bowl, I swim my solitary laps, counting down the hours, days, weeks… it must be weeks by now. Just me and my plant (which, by the way, is starting to look pretty tasty at this point). I should’ve known something was up when I found a few extra flakes in my bowl right after the last human sighting. And the suitcase… what was that for? Come to think of it, I heard something about “vacation,” whatever that
is, and then this giant bettashaped vitamin was placed in my bowl with promises of food coming shortly. When? It’s already been at least a month. Time tends to fast forward when you live in a bowl. But, wait… here it is – a flake. And another. Where did they come from? No human in sight, but this little vitamin seems to be melting into food! Oh thank goodness! She didn’t forget about me after all. I wonder if she’ll ever be back? {826 Days Later…} I hear a noise! The front door… the light… MY HUMAN HAS RETURNED! Oh boy, oh boy! If I had longer fins, I’d give her the biggest hug ever! Oh, and here comes the good food,
my gourmet pellets, with a few extra thrown in – how sweet. She didn’t abandon me after all. But where did she go? I see the suitcase… but no presents? No souvenirs for Buddy? And what’s this about “bath time” now? She’s been home five minutes and already this nonsense about cleaning out the remnants of the vitamin from my bowl. Good grief. There had better be a good explanation for all this. I expect a special trip to the pet store this weekend to pick out a new toy… and extra food… and at least a week’s notice the next time one of these “vacation” things takes place. Better yet, I expect to be invited along.

Prior to that, he held positions as director of community relations at KeySpan and executive director of the KeySpan Foundation. Dave received his B.S. and M.S. in Business Administration and Energy Management at New York Institute of Technology-Old Westbury. He is a member of the board of directors of the Long Island Volunteer Center and the Better Business Bureau Foundation. Pink Rock Classic
RETURNING TO SCHOOL - Students at the Miller Place School District’s Andrew Muller Primary School and Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School recently stepped off the buses and into their first day of the 2015-2016 school year. Students can look forward to another year of academics, art, athletics and more as they embarked on a fun-filled day of activities to celebrate their first day of school.
The 9th Annual Pink Rock Classic golf tournament will take place Monday, October 5th, at the Port Jefferson Country Club at Harbor Hills. The annual golf tournament benefits the Fund for Uninsured at the Fortunato Breast Health Center at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital. The Fund for Uninsured was established to provide access to state-of-the-art breast screenings and diagnostic procedures for patients without health insurance. Jean Larsen
of Stony Brook, a breast cancer survivor who faced a huge personal debt from battling the disease, came up with the idea of the Pink Rock Classic to help others in a similar situation. She and her friend and former co-worker Walter Hurney put together the Pink Rock Classic golf tournament. The event has raised more than $450,000 for people in need. The 18-hole outing begins at 11 a.m. with registration and lunch. The shot-gun start begins at 1 pm. The day includes
a cocktail hour followed by a grand buffet dinner and awards ceremony beginning at 6 p.m. The fee for the day is $350 per player or $1,400 per foursome. For grand buffet dinner and cocktails only, tickets are $150 per person. Anatomically, they sport an elongated body With patches of shiny colors, Appearing jewel-like in the sunlight. From the Latin Anisoptera, meaning its hind wings Are shorter and broader than the forewings, all mostly colorless. . A delight to observe in flight... hovering like a helicopter, Able to change direction in an instance. Zooming at times at 35 miles per hour, Darting up and down and even backward. As nymphs, hatched from eggs, tiny wingless creatures wiggle forth. Thriving on worms, mosquito larvae and tadpoles. Hiding in weeds or mud, they are aquatic, Living in fresh water, ponds and streams. In the adult stage, they are able to fly across oceans, Albeit their lives are mostly spent as nymphs With an adult life span of scarcely a few days or weeks. Their vision is better than good, with many photoreceptor Cells to assist them in seizing small insects in flight.

Conference Day District administrators, staff and teachers of the Port Jefferson School District had the opportunity to hear from NYS Department of Education Regent Roger Tilles during the district’s annual Superintendent’s Conference Day on September 2nd. During his keynote address, Regent Tilles assured educators that he has students’ and teachers’ best interests in mind as he outlined his plan for
altering the current means for evaluating teachers to one that would use multiple measures to not only assess educators, but also improve instruction and performance. In addition to hearing from Regent Tilles, attendees were also introduced to new administrators and staff members; heard from speakers including Board of Education President Kathleen Brennan, President of the Port
Jefferson Teachers Union Brian Snow; and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Bossert, who gave a presentation called Port Jefferson Points of Pride, which highlighted the various academic programs that Port Jefferson prides itself on. Additionally, Scott Zamek, chair of the Royal Educational Foundation, presented six educational grants for the 2015-2016 school year.

Under warm and sunny skies, Port Jefferson School District students eagerly arrived at school on September 8th ready to begin a new year of learning. Upon arrival at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School, students were
greeted by balloons and smiling staff members, who assisted them to their classrooms. At Port Jefferson Middle School and Earl L. Vandermeulen High School, students were welcomed back with an array of purple decorations that adorned the schools’
