Paint Port Pink Paint Port Pink, John T. GAS HEAT REPLACEMENT - LIMITED TIME PRE-SEASON OFFER
history of storms and hurricanes beginning with the 1938 Hurricane and ending with the 1991 Halloween nor’easter. There will be objects from museum and personal collections including artifacts damaged by the 1938 hurricane, a pump used to service a community in the 1944 hurricane, and a historic generator and ham radio. Irene, Lee and Sandy will look at the 2011 and 2012 storms that struck Long Island and upstate New York, destroying and flooding countless homes, businesses, and municipalities. Highlights will include a miniature bay house that visitors will interact with to prepare for a severe storm, a section of the Long Beach boardwalk damaged by Sandy, and examples of tools that proved useful to homeowners, such as homemade hurricane lamps and foods that helped in the aftermath, including Surge Protector Beer. Looking Forwards will focus on building floodproof homes and protecting communities using new technologies. Objects will include wooden elevation cribs, architectural models made by NY Institute of
Technology students, and an interactive project where visitors will create their own coastal village. Principal team members of the exhibition are guest curator Nancy Solomon, of Long Island Traditions (www.longislandtraditions. org ), Long Island Museum staff members Joshua Ruff and Jonathan Olly, exhibit designer Paul Orselli of Paul Orselli Workshop (http://www.orselli.net/), and video producers Emily Charlaff and Mauricio Bayona. Three public programs will supplement In Harm’s Way at the Long Island Museum: • October 28th, symposium: “In Harm’s Way: Past, Present and Future” from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. • November 12th, panel discussion: “Learning from our Neighbors” at 2 p.m. • December 3rd, curator’s gallery tour at 2 p.m. Funding for In Harm’s Way is provided by National Endowment for the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, Humanities New York and The Gardiner Foundation.
When students in the Rocky Point School District returned to school on September 5th, they were all smiles and eager to begin the 2017-2018 school year. For the members of Rocky Point High School’s senior class this school
year marks the end of their educational journey in the district while for the kindergarten students at F.J. Carasiti Elementary School it was the first of many new beginnings. The district’s youngest scholars were eased into their roles as students by attending
a truncated schedule the first week, which consisted of several half-days. The year ahead is sure to be filled with many exciting and educationally enriching learning experiences for all district students.

School Commences Under particularly sunny skies, the Three Village Central School District commenced the 2017-2018 school year on September 5th and marked the first day of school. Students arrived at their respective schools full of smiles and eager to begin
the new year, rejoined with old friends. After exiting their school buses, they were greeted with warm smiles from district faculty and staff, who assisted with the transition to new classrooms and schedules. This year brought several new initiatives in the
school district, including a new district Pre-K program at Nassakeag Elementary School, expanded music and educational offerings at the secondary level and the provision for a 1:1 device initiative in grades 7-9.

Storms and hurricanes have a long history in upstate New York and Long Island, such as the famed September 1938 “Long Island Express” hurricane and the most recent Super Storm Sandy. Now, five years after Sandy, In Harm’s Way will explore how local residents and government agencies prepare and recover from natural disasters like Sandy, as well as Hurricanes Lee and Irene, through a wide array of historic artifacts, shared stories, hands-on activities, and compelling photographs. The exhibition examines how individuals and families prepare for severe weather events, how they respond to the storm’s aftermath, how communities protect their coastlines, and how these actions have changed over time. Examples of such efforts include the use of snow fencing to stabilize beaches, home elevations after recent storms including Superstorm Sandy, the creation of sea walls and storm barriers, and creating emergency kits to suit specific needs within a family. The exhibit will consist of three separate sections: Looking Backwards will examine Long Island’s

Eco-conscious lifestyles may have transformed the ways people behave at home or on the job, but many schools have taken a little longer to embrace ecofriendly practices. But that doesn’t have to continue, as younger generations of students are growing up green and ready to embrace some green strategies in the classroom. One of the easiest steps to take is to reduce paper usage. According to Edutopia, a K-12 learning and education resource, the average school uses approximately 250,000 pieces of paper per school year. This estimate is based on an average of 50 reams of paper per teacher at a 100-teacher school. Instead of relying so heavily on paper, students can take notes on laptops or tablets while teachers can rely on smartboards and notebooks for classroom lessons. When paper must be used, make a concentrated effort to discard it in designated recycling bins in each classroom.

with Jamie Lynn Ryan When We Were Young There’s something about this time of year, even being 17-plus years removed from school, that still resonates with a certain degree of excitement. First days, new supplies in hand, a fashionable outfit all picked out the night before… just seeing snapshots of my friends’ children brings back a flood of memories from when I was a child, excitedly comparing schedules with my own classmates, mapping out what routes to take to class, planning who to eat lunch with the important things. How much has changed in the decades since. I know plenty of us would be thrilled to return to those simpler times, to when our biggest concern was having pool first period, or how to manage to squeeze in a stop at our lockers in between each class so as not to have to lug piles of books around the entire day. Even the workload seems trivial by comparison. We were competing for grades; but really, the entire structure was but a microcosm of the stresses of
daily “adult” life. It’s funny how we think we have it all figured out when we’re younger; no one can possibly offer us any insight that doesn’t match our own. We skate from one year to the next, until we eventually have to decide what to do with the rest of our lives. And even then, we have that cushion of college, the ultimate in years spent “finding” yourself. And really, all these years later, has any of us truly found what we thought we were looking for back then? I recall one teacher in high school who constantly warned us that, as many “friends” as we had collected through those formative years, there would come a day when less than a handful would remain. “Two, maybe three, tops,” he would say. “Just you wait and see.” Impossible, we all scoffed, as we remained confident that all those whom we spent the majority of classes and extracurricular activities with would always be by our side.

Lindenhurst High School ~ 2003 On the day of September 11th, it began like all the others, By mid-afternoon, tragedy struck, and all men became brothers. When the planes hit and lives were lost, it was a shot through the heart, But patriotism took control and everyone did their part. It seemed like a horrible movie, all the fire, dust and smoke, It was reality just the same, when America began to hope. Innocent passengers and heroic firefighters lost their lives, Women lost their husbands and grown men lost their wives. When it occurred, no one chose to believe it was true, But every American began to bleed Red, White and Blue. America grew stronger from this tragic day, to aid the ones who suffer, America is a country we live for, we die for, because we love her. Hearts and courage were plainly shown by all the volunteers, To do what they could to eliminate all of peoples’ fears. Firefighters valiantly fought to save the lives of some, The fact that America grew together, this war is already won. In the midst of ground zero, where debris and dust will cover, What America truly stands for, is what we all discover.

It wasn’t immediate. In fact, there were many friendships I maintained throughout college and even beyond. But, with each passing year, the list grew smaller. This is not to say that we would be incapable of picking up where we left off on any given day; but it’s not the same. Gone are the days of constantly talking on the phone, making plans to catch up, replaced instead by an occasional text message, a vague reference to “grabbing dinner” one of these days - and there it generally remains. If anything, this realization only confirms that I should have fully appreciated those school days as they were unfolding. How young and innocent we were, how little we knew of what was to come in the years that have since elapsed… how precious that time truly was. Here’s to all those students living those years as we speak. May they always appreciate them the way I have now learned to in hindsight.
It’s not just a name, it’s not just land, it’s not why we are here, America is the air we breathe; it’s something we hold dear. The pride for our country came out that month, to deal with the unbelievable, And the fact that everyone banded together seemed so inconceivable. Girls became women and boys became men, to take on this emotional fight, The gift of freedom cannot be stopped; it’s our most amiable right. On the day of September 11th, the statement of glory and hope was cited, After this tragedy, the States of America truly became United.

In response to the urgent call for help, Westy Self Storage is hosting a donation drive to assist the victims of Hurricane Harvey. Suffolk County Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory and Legislator Al Krupski congratulate Building Maintenance Manager Judd Classie, a resident of Ridge, on being presented the Employee Excellence Award for the month of September. Mr. Classie, who began his career in the Suffolk County Department of Public Works in 1995, has risen through the ranks throughout his years in the department. He provides maintenance services to all buildings within the North County Complex and continually steps up to provide needed repairs and services, no matter the time of day or job to be undertaken, according to DPW Commissioner
Gilbert Anderson. “Over the last three years Judd has saved the county more than half a million by doing work and projects in-house. He provides the best services and savings for the department,” says Commissioner Anderson. Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory said that Judd is an exemplary employee and is representative of the team players that make up the Suffolk County workforce. “We are eternally grateful to Judd and other employees in Suffolk County whose expertise and work ethic is vital to ensuring this county runs smoothly. He is very deserving of this award.” “We don’t often think about the effort that
goes into maintaining county properties until something goes wrong, but we are grateful to the men and women who spend their days making our work environments safe and comfortable,” said Legislator Krupski. “I am glad I had the opportunity to join Presiding Officer Gregory in recognizing Mr. Judd to thank him for his dedicated service to Suffolk County.” The Employee Excellence Award was instituted by Presiding Officer Gregory this year as a way to recognize employees who go above and beyond their duties. Sheriff’s Open House Sheriff Vincent DeMarco is encouraging the public to come out to Celebrate NYS Sheriff’s Week by attending the Sheriff’s Open House and Family Day on Sunday, September 17th at the Yaphank Jail located at 200 Glover Drive in Yaphank, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Governor Andrew Cuomo declared September 17th through the 23rd Sheriff’s Week in New York State. Sheriff’s Week celebrates the significant contributions made by the Office of the Sheriff in county government and in the statewide criminal justice system. The event is geared toward people of all ages, and will feature jail tours (ages 12 and
over), exhibits, Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team demonstrations, a Troop Carrier Truck ride, Project Lifesaver demonstrations, Operation Safe Child ID Cards, Senior ID Cards, drunk buggy obstacle course, an aquatic robot, snacks, giveaways, games and much more. The Office of Sheriff is the highest-ranking law enforcement office in the county, and is steeped in historic significance which encompasses more than three centuries of continuous service to Long Island. The 7-week class is free of charge and will be held at Mercy in the CIJ conference area, beginning Wednesday, September 27th, from 1 to

graduating next May with a Bachelor Degree in Business Economics. Darnel sang songs for the seniors. Frank Sinatra’s “Fly Me To The Moon” and the Ink Blot’s “Set The World On Fire” are two examples. He interned in the Development Department on Parker’s Golf Classic, following up with sponsors and working on promoting the event. Darnel enjoyed Career Day because he spoke with Parker’s Finance team and learned how finance plays a large role in health care. He’s interested in a hospitality career, and hopes to run a hotel one day! Anandita Guha came to Parker through the Volunteer Department and volunteered with the Therapeutic Recreation Department. She spent time with the patients and residents, getting to know them, what activities they liked, talked with them, and most importantly listened to them. As an accomplished student of
dance, she also performed “Bollywood Style” dancing for patients at Parker, which they really enjoyed! She is a student at Kew Forest High School in Kew Gardens, and plans to become an anesthesiologist. Joy Nath is a Bronx High School student and came to Parker through the 1199SIEU program. Through the 1199SIEU program, Joy received guidance with resume writing, cover letters, interview skills, etc. He’ll include his stint in Parker’s gift shop on his resume. This recent high school graduate will attend The Macaulay Honors College at Lehman College in the Bronx, for a career in nursing. Parker was proud to help nurture the careers of these fine young people. Oldest Tree The oldest living tree, 4,700-year-old “Methuselah” grows in White Mountains, Calif.
Building Future Leaders for these young adults, whose presence brings joy to Parker’s elderly patients and residents. Through the sponsorship of NYC’s Department of Youth & Community Development, LFL provides paid internships to City youth between the ages of 16 and 22. These interns are carefully vetted. “All our applicants are evaluated based on their academic performance, responses to essay questions and résumé quality,” said Danielle DeAngelis, LMSW, Youth Employment Program Manager at Samuel Field and Central Queens YM & YWHA (her administrative staff finds internships and runs the program). “Ladders For Leaders helps high school and college students with paid internships, so they can get experience in different fields while earning money,” Danielle said. Selected applicants undertake 20-30 hours of pre-employment training to teach essential
workplace readiness skills and professional etiquette. Participants then have an opportunity to interview for summer internships at many partners, such as Maimonides Medical Center, Morgan Stanley, New York Hospital Cornell, New York University Medical Center, Queens Chamber of Commerce and Parker Jewish Institute. Employer partners make final selections on hiring for paid internships. Parker’s President and CEO, Michael N. Rosenblut, commented on how impressed he was to meet such a talented and mature group of young adults, who truly were enthusiastic and engaging with the residents and patients, as well as with the team members. Parker hosted 130 interns and volunteers this summer. “The students had the opportunity to experience interning with professional staff in departments that included public affairs, finance, development, nutrition, social work,
nursing, pharmacy, medicine, therapeutic recreation, physical and occupational therapy, etc. Some interacted with patients and residents, bringing joy and delight to their days,” Rosenblut said. Also, through the 1199SEIU Youth Mentoring Program, union member’s children can apply for paid internships through the 1199SEIU Child Care Fund. Through their program, 15 youth were volunteers at Parker this summer. He added that through their various partners, Parker has hundreds of interns as volunteers throughout the year. Parker was one of Ladders For Leaders first health care partners. Pratima Bhagwandin, Director of Volunteers, coordinates Parker’s Career Day and the Volunteer Recognition Luncheon. The SYF community scholarship program is one facet of the Simon Supports Education initiative, launched earlier this spring at all Simon properties. One dollar from the sale of each bright orange, SYF-branded card will go directly to support SYF and its mission. “The support of Simon and its generous shoppers has been instrumental in the growth and overall impact of
Simon Youth Foundation,” said Dr. J. Michael Durnil, SYF President and CEO. “Providing this scholarship to deserving students in communities that Simon calls home is our way of saying ‘thank you’ for their continued support.” In addition to the community scholarships, 11 regional awards called “Awards of Excellence” will be given to top candidates. The regions eligible are Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Indianapolis, Miami, New York, Orange County (CA), Orlando, and Seattle/ Tacoma. Additionally, one Award of Excellence will be awarded to an applicant from
a Simon Premium Outlet. Students from these areas will have the opportunity to receive a $10,000 award ($2,500 for up to four years). In 2017, the Simon Youth Foundation awarded $1.6 million to 335 students nationwide. “The importance of pursuing education - both high school and beyond cannot be overstated, and we feel passionately that financial constraints should never be the reason that a promising student is unable to achieve their dreams,” said Durnil. “We are proud to partner with Simon Long Island mall locations to help a Long
Island-area student take their next steps in life.” The 2018 SYF Community Scholarship recipients will be selected by International Scholarship and Tuition Services, Inc. (ISTS), a thirdparty administrator. Students are selected based on a variety of criteria, including financial need, academic performance, leadership skills and participation in school and community activities. Those students who are the first in their family to pursue a post secondary education will also be given close consideration. Recipients will be notified of their awards in May 2018.
