We Will Never Forget

After the iconic towers fell, thoughts turned to the best ways to commemorate the memories of the people lost on 9/11, as well as the heroism that took place on that fateful September day. Out of the rubble came The National September 11 Memorial and Museum. Millions of people have visited the memorial, which opened to the public on September 12, 2011, and the museum, which opened on May 21, 2014. Many tourists make it a point to visit the National September 11 Memorial and Museum when traveling to New York City. The memorial portion was the first to open and includes twin reflecting pools that are each nearly an acre in size and feature the largest manmade waterfalls in North America. The pools sit within the footprints of where the Twin Towers once stood. In the memorial plaza, visitors will find trees harvested from locations within a 500-mile radius of the WTC site, and additional trees coming from locations in Pennsylvania and Maryland. Visitors will also see the “Survivor Tree,” which was recovered from the rubble at the World Trade Center site in October 2001. According to The National September 11 Memorial and Museum Foundation, the museum serves as the country’s principal instiution concerned with exploring the implications of the events of 9/11, documenting the impact of those events and exploring the continuing significance of September 11. The underground museum has many different artifacts from 9/11, including steel from the Twin Towers, fire trucks and debris. It houses 110,000 square feet of exhibition space and has multimedia displays, monumental collections, archives, and stories about the men, women and children who died during the attacks. The National September 11 Memorial and Museum archives the story of destruction that occured, but also represents the hope and camaraderie that the attacks spawned.

The World Trade Center spanned 16 acres and opened to the public on April 4, 1973. Including the two towers that fell, World Trade Center Building 7 and many other surrounding businesses were ultimately demolished. While 2,977 people perished in the 2001 attack, many find it miraculous that so many others were able to evacuate and escape death.

The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the Foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. S o m e t i m e s a wish fulfills an immediate need, and sometimes it is a last wish or lifetime dream. Large or small, all wishes provide a meaningful “thank you” to the senior for a lifetime of service to others. Every wish they grant helps build a culture that values and respects our senior population. You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,000 wishes throughout our country, ranging from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross-country in a tractor-trailer truck. One of their wish recipient’s life was changed after he wished for a mobility scooter. He is from Scranton, PA and wanted this scooter so he can continue to assist others at an art center located across the street from his residence. Long Island’s Chapter Director James Ciervo and his colleague Joann Petrie drove to PA to pick up a very gently used scooter, updated it a bit and delivered

DEDICATION CEREMONY - The Long Island Museum will host a dedication ceremony on Sunday, September 15th at 2:00 pm with artist Carol Hummel for the volunteers of the Hooked@LIM tree project. Hooked@LIM volunteers dedicated their time and efforts at the Long Island Museum bringing culture, color and creativity to the community.

The Long Island Museum is excited to host a dedication ceremony on Sunday, September 15th at 2:00 pm with artist Carol Hummel for the volunteers of the Hooked@LIM tree project. Hooked@LIM is a community based project that began in June bringing over 40 volunteers to the Long Island Museum (LIM) to crochet the individual elements needed to cover the silver maple that stands adjacent to the Carriage Museum on Route 25a. This is the second collaboration between the LIM and the artist. Hummel, who in 2015 wrapped 5 trees on the museum grounds, has created successful public art installations similar to this one in Switzerland, Norway, India and at multiple venues in the United States, including her hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. Her work draws communities together across boundaries and has enhanced the

beauty of the museum grounds. Over 250 skeins of nylon yarn were used during the three-month project. “Each crocheted piece that is included in this tree is uniquely different, just like the many volunteers who created them,” said Hummel. “However, they weave together to form beautiful masterpieces that this community created and this community can enjoy every day, every season, every year as a symbol of what individuals can do when they work together to create positive, beautiful works of art. The Long Island Museum trees are truly art by the people, for the people, and should be cherished as symbols of community pride.” Hummel holds an MFA in sculpture from Kent State University, has been the recipient of numerous awards as well as artistin-residence at many institutions. Hummel has been assisted in the

organization and the installation of this and countless other projects by her daughter, Molly Sedensky. Sarah Abruzzi, Deputy Director, Director of Advancement and External Affairs echoed Hummel’s words. “This colorful tree stands not only as a symbol of creativity but also community,” said Abruzzi. “Collaborating once again with the talented Carol Hummel has been a privilege and the Long Island Museum is very grateful to all of the dedicated Hooked@ LIM volunteers who participated in this unique cooperative project.” The LIM will have free admission all day and the dedication ceremony will be held rain or shine. Indoor space is available in case of rain and seating is limited. Attendees will enjoy live music and light refreshments will be served.

RESCUE RECEIVES $10,000 GRANT -Supervisor Ed Romaine has announced that Last Hope Animal Rescue has received a $10,000 grant from the Alex and Elisabeth Lewyt Charitable Trust (matched in part by Last Hope) to target the epidemic number of feral cats in the Town of Brookhaven this fall. Vouchers will be issued to residents caring for feral cats inhabiting the Town by completing the mandatory agreement on the organization’s website at www.lasthopeanimalrescue.org/fix-a-feral/. Cats will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and ear-tipped for free at four participating veterinarians. The program will cease on December 15.
