Rep. Zeldin Announces Expansion of Military Child Care Assistance Congressman Lee Zeldin (R, NY-1), an Army veteran who continues to serve as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve, announced the United States Air Force has designated Long Island a high cost area, allowing active duty Air Force service members to receive child care tuition assistance from the Department of Defense (DOD) for use at approved local child care providers. Earlier this year, Congressman Zeldin’s office initiated an inquiry
with the Air Force through the Department of Defense to reassess its cost of living determination for New York’s First Congressional District, home of Gabreski Air National Guard Base. This review resulted in all of Long Island being designated as a high cost area, making active duty Air Force service members eligible for child care tuition assistance. “Long Island is one of the most beautiful places in America to call home, but it also boasts

THREE VILLAGE HISTORICAL SOCIETY - Three Village Historical Society, an educational nonprofit, has been awarded a $350,000 grant from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation to be used to rebuild, restore, and repurpose the DominicCrawford Barn, a historically significant building from circa 1847. Three Village Historical Society, an educational nonprofit, has been awarded a $350,000 grant from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation to be used to rebuild, restore, and repurpose the Dominic-Crawford Barn, a historically significant building from circa 1847. The Society, which exists to educate the public about this area’s rich cultural heritage as well as protect and preserve local history, procured the barn with the express intention of reinstating its structural historic integrity and converting it into usable space for both the organization and the public. The money will go directly to this project. The Society’s plan is to transform the barn into an education center while maintaining its historic integrity. Located in a field at the Society’s headquarters on 93 North Country Road, it will include teaching facilities with necessary tools and aids, exhibit space
that will be flexible and interchangeable, as well as archive facilities that will be readily accessible to staff, local educators, students, and the general public. The center will allow the Society to supplement the space currently being used at the Emma S. Clark Memorial Library in Setauket and provide accessible, climatecontrolled, secure storage for the preservation of the Society’s many historical artifacts. The Society also plans for the center to include research space with state of the art capabilities, meeting room for small and moderatesized community groups, and facilities for special community activities and events. With the RDL Gardiner Foundations paramount support, along with a DASNY grant obtained through Assemblyman Steve Englebright, the Society will have a new educational facility that increases meeting and exhibition opportunities
for the public. This will enable the Society to expand its educational offerings to larger groups for our out-of-school programs, lecturers, exhibits, and events. It will allow the Society to increase its outreach as well as that of the Gardiner Foundation. Established in 1987 and currently led by Executive Director Kathryn M. Curran, the primary focus of the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation is the study of New York State history, with an emphasis on Suffolk County. Robert David Lion Gardiner, who passed away in August 2004, was the 16th Lord of the Manor of Gardiner’s Island, NY. Stony Brook University Aims to Keep Students Safe with Exclusive COVID-19 Testing Center

In an effort to keep its students safe from the spread of Coronavirus, Stony Brook University has implemented a studentonly on-site testing center in partnership with Enzo Clinical Labs. “We have taken proactive measures to help our community stay safe, including the installation of a unique state-of-theart testing facility,” said President Maurie McInnis. “We are dedicated to helping ensure that all of our students stay healthy through the entirety of the semester. We can achieve this together if we each have continued concern for others within our community.” Student Health, Wellness and Prevention Services has partnered with the local laboratory to provide a unique service for Stony Brook University Students: A walk-up
COVID testing site, to ongoing Coronavirus testing at Student Health Services on the Stony Brook West campus. These tests are provided to all students as part of our ongoing surveillance plan during the semester. Testing students who are ill or symptomatic of COVID -19 is also able to be completed in a separate on campus location within the Student Health Services facility. The tests are designed to be returned in three to four days maximum. Students can schedule an appointment to receive a test. Enzo Clinical Labs is led by board-certified pathologists and technical managers who combine many years of clinical experience with the desire to produce the highest quality laboratory results. In fact, President Maurie
McInnis demonstrated this testing procedure herself in this social media video. In addition to the testing site, one of the other measures the University has taken was an updatable dashboard, created by the Department of Institutional Research, Planning & Effectiveness. “Stony Brook University is doing everything we can to help keep our students safe,” says Marisa Bisiani, DNP, ANP-BC, Assistant Vice President for Student Health, Wellness and Prevention Services in the Division Of Student Affairs and Assistant Clinical Professor in the School of Nursing. “And to keep the community updated, we developed a COVID-19 dashboard in which anyone can view cases, testing and quarantines in relation to campus density. However, we know the work has just begun.”

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition
For Long Island, Inc.
The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community. They have stayed open throughout the pandemic and are truly here to serve our community. WIBCC serves ALL of Long Island, not just West Islip! To accomplish their mission, they focus on pressing these goals:
Research: To promote legislation to increase funding for environmental research and provide funding for specific breast cancer projects. Education: Providing up-to-date information through their website, newsletter, information packets and education seminars. They offer adult and student awareness programs designed to help participants increase their awareness of Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Services: To offer breast and gynecological cancer patients services paid for and facilitated by WIBCC via the “Lend A Helping Hand” program. Lend A Helping Hand: The non-surgical modalities of treatment for breast cancer chemotherapy and radiation leave the patient in the need of a “Helping Hand”. Awareness: Breast Cancer is survivable.
As like many other nonprofit organizations, the WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www.johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the charity code FG-WIBCC20. That itch you’re feeling? It’s not chiggers! Every year thousands of people report itchy red bites from what they think is an encounter with chiggers. In fact, evidence shows there are no chiggers on Long Island. It’s the larva of Lone Star ticks that’s causing those itchy red welts on your skin. Lone Star larvae begin hatching in July and will remain active until the fall months. The newly hatched larval ticks will cluster in hundreds or sometimes even thousands which is why people will often get bitten many times, usually on the ankle’s, legs and waist. The Lone Star tick larva are microscopic, hard to see and while they don’t transmit tick borne diseases, can give you the meat allergy Alpha Gal. With warmer winters over the past several years ticks have become a yearround problem on the east end. Stony Brook Real Estate Institute To Host Free Virtual Symposium The Real Estate Institute at Stony Brook University (REI) will host its annual John Kominicki Symposium through a virtual seminar to be held on consecutive Fridays, September 18th and 25th at 9:30am to 11:00am - both online via Zoom Conferencing. This first seminar in this series will include panelists Kevin Law, President & CEO of the Long Island Association, Peter Elkowitz, President & CEO of the LI Housing Partnership, and Christopher Jones, SVP & Chief Planner

The discussion will be moderated by David Pennetta, Executive Managing Partner of Cushman & Wakefield and will center on “Projections for Long Island’s Economy and Real Estate.” Topics of discussion will include projects such as East Side Access, Double/Triple Track, transit-oriented developments, downtown
revitalizations, innovation hubs, and research corridors. Panelists will discuss these and other relevant issues in light of ongoing lockdowns and other economic impacts due to Covid-19 and how Long Island can accelerate a return to sustained economic growth.
