Alzheimer’s disease is a degenerative brain disease and is the most common cause of dementia. The neurological disease affects an individual’s ability to perform everyday tasks. This decline is the result of damage to the areas of the brain involved in cognitive function. Nearly 44 million people worldwide have Alzheimer’s or a related dementia. Only one in four people with Alzheimer’s have been diagnosed. The cost of caring for Alzheimer’s patients in the world has risen to $605 billion. The social, emotional and financial toll can weigh heavily on Alzheimer’s disease victims and their families. In an effort to increase detection rates and avoid further burdens on the lives of Alzheimer’s patients and their families, ADRC is asking everyone to participate in the AMARANTH Study. This clinical research study is targeted to men and women between the ages

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan So I recently decided that, seeing as my obsession with photography has only grown stronger over the years, I should probably invest in an actual camera one of these days – you know, the kind with a lens, adjustable settings, the whole deal. Smartphones are great and all, but realistically, there are certain images that would be better served by something a bit more… professional. Add to that the fact that, as a working journalist, I have often contemplated delving into the world of freelance photography, taking one of my favorite hobbies and turning it

into, well, something more than random meandering in search of sunsets and landscapes and quirky angles. Of course, I suppose this pursuit would also involve photographing humans from time to time…not exactly my favorite subject. See, the beauty of a landscape – aside from its quite literal beauty, of course – is that the only changing factors you need to contend with are weather-related. People, well, they’re a whole different story. They blink, they look away, they grow impatient and start waving their arms and talking before the flash finishes going off… all great material for the photo album. No wonder

why most of my digital camera roll winds up going straight to the trash. In this day and age, with all the mobile photography apps available, everyone purports to be a photographer in his or her own right. Take your smartphone, experiment with a couple of filters, post the finished product on Facebook and Instagram… then sit back and wait for the “likes,” “comments” and “shares” to come flooding in. Easy, right? Personally, I’d like to see some higher quality material on my newsfeed. Step one: purchase a “real” camera. Step two: learn how to use it. Step three: set off in search of those sunsets – and maybe a few people. Maybe.

SCIENCE FICTION IN THE SPOTLIGHT SUBMITTED BY: JENNIFER FURST, AGE 15, ISLIP HIGH SCHOOL Scientists still don’t know how it happened, if it was a disease or genetic mutation... In 3087, a woman collapsed during a routine child birth; her bones caved in on each other and pierced all of her vital organs, killing her almost instantly. The doctors couldn’t do anything. After a thorough examination of the mother’s body, the scientists saw that her bones did not break, but bent in on themselves under the weight of her skin. The scientist examined the newborn, fearing the same outcome. However, they did not find fragile bone structure like the mother had; they found an exceptionally strong bone structure. The newborn had bone structure strength equal to an average ten year-old boy. That cycle of strong boned child births continued throughout the years.

In the year 4012, a different birth mutation occurred. A mother carried a weak-boned child and, when she was born, doctors decided on a mercy killing, calling it “sparing the loss for the future generations.” Through further investigation, scientists discovered that the father had a 75% weak bone probability and killed him too, again to “spare the loss for the future generations.” The people started calling them “mercy killings for the good of the future.” The last mutation occurred in 4070, when a male and a female produced a child with such strong bone structure that the only appropriate term was titaniumboned. When the mother and father where checked, their genes showed that the mother had all strong bone chromosomes and the father had all strong bone chromosomes, in effect producing

a titanium baby. Titanium babies are extremely rare, so rare that only one in a thousand showed a titaniumboned person. The government was fighting for territory when they heard the news of an improved gene malfunction; they sought them all, literally taking the children out of their mothers’ arms. Subsequently, they trained these children to fight for territory. What the government did not consider was how enraged the public would become at the fact that their children were being taken - and that anger and rage started a civil war. It is now 5028, and the war still continues. I was born in 5009, making me 19 years old. I am one of the few titanium bones left.

Supervisor Edward P. Romaine and Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright attended the Eagle Scout Court of Honor for Jeremy G. Rahner of Boy Scout Troop 377, at Neighborhood House on Saturday, August 22nd. Mr. Rahner’s Eagle Scout Project consisted of four information signs and a fence indicating a trail head at Forsythe Meadow County Park, Stony Brook. The signs contain descriptions of poison ivy

and how to avoid contact with it, how to prevent tick bites, the invasive nature of bamboo, and a directional sign marking the trail and indicating the direction of the parking lot. This project included donations of tools and supplies and the time of community volunteers. “I recently joined Legislator Kara Hahn at the ribbon cutting for the new trail at Forsythe Meadow County Park,” stated Councilwoman Cartright. “I appreciate all

that Jeremy did to enhance the experience of walking the trail and I am happy to join him today to celebrate the honor of reaching the rank of Eagle Scout.” “Congratulations to Jeremy for completing his service project and achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. Boy Scouts are the leaders of tomorrow, and from meeting Jeremy, I can say that we’ll be in good hands,” said Supervisor Romaine.

On August 26th, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilwoman Jane Bonner attended the Ice ALS Challenge Community Fun Night at Heritage Park in Mount Sinai. Nearly 500 residents took part in the fun activities including pie throwing competitions, face painting, jugging and more. Councilwoman Bonner also got in the spirit by taking a seat in the dunk tank while Supervisor Romaine successfully hit the target. The highlight of the evening was the

ALS Ice Bucket Challenge to promote awareness and encourage donations for medical research in the fight against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The event raised more than $5,000. Supervisor Romaine said, “It was great to see so many people at Heritage Park having fun for a good cause. When a person is stricken with ALS, it impacts families, friends and the community. That’s why the Ice ALS Challenge Community Fun Night is

so important and I thank all those who took part in this very worthy cause.” “The Ice ALS Challenge grows bigger and bigger each year and I was happy to once again join in on the fun,” said Councilwoman Bonner. “I applaud all the participants and volunteers for their commitment to find a cure for ALS and especially event co-organizer Chris Pendergast, who has not allowed this dreaded disease to stop him from helping others live a full and fruitful life.”

Chosen to Compete County Executive Steve Bellone congratulates two Smith Point County Park lifeguards from Suffolk County who have been selected to compete in the Sixth International Surf Rescue Challenge (ISRC 2015) September 3rd through 6th, 2015 in Maroochydore Beach, Queensland, Australia. “The skills of our lifeguards are tested on a daily basis,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “They are trained in a variety of beach conditions and life-saving techniques, and must be ready to respond in an instant. Competing in various challenges and events keeps the lifeguards focused in maintaining high lifeguard standards and creating public awareness for beach safety.”

Garrett Thibodeau of Miller Place and Sandi Woodhead of Port Jefferson are two of 16 individuals chosen to compete for the American team. Sandi, studying to be a registered nurse, has been a lifeguard at Smith Point for the past five seasons. She holds one national title, and was a finalist in the 4 x 100 and 2K race, and took 5th place in the Beach Flags event. This will be her second international competition. Garrett is currently a teacher’s assistant in the Middle Country School District. He has been lifeguarding at Smith Point for 15 seasons and has been a part of the National Team for 13 years in a row. He holds eight national titles in 4x100 and flags and three international titles in 4x100 and Rescue

Race. This will be his sixth international competition. Ranked among the top lifeguards in the world, these Smith Point lifeguards are part of the eight-time national championship team and have played a big part in Smith Point’s zero drowning record. In the United States Lifesaving Association’s annual competition, the Smith Point lifeguards took second place in the “B” Division on August 6th-8th, 2015 in Daytona Beach, Florida. (Division B consists of beach patrols across the nation employing less than 100 lifeguards.) In this event, they competed with teams from Destin, Wrightsville Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Nags Head, Vero Beach and Clearwater.

Paint Port Pink Port Jefferson is going pink this October to help raise community awareness about breast cancer and breast health. Government buildings, schools, businesses and other institutions will be lit up in pink lights as part of John T. Mather Memorial Hospital’s Paint Port Pink community outreach. Paint Port Pink is presented by Astoria Bank with the support of North Shore Hematology Oncology Associates, Long Island Physician Associates, LI Anesthesia Physicians, People’s United Bank, Suffolk Plastic Surgeons, A World of Pink, Empire Bank and Gordon L. Seaman. The month-long outreach will distribute breast cancer information, raise funds for the Fortunato Breast Health Center and

increase breast health awareness throughout our community with the cooperation of the sponsors and the Village of Port Jefferson, the Port Jefferson School District, the North Shore Art Guild, Greater Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce and other local groups. All money raised will benefit the Fortunato Breast Health Center Fund for Uninsured. Among the activities planned: August 30th through October 31st Mather Hospital is teaming up with the North Shore Art Guild, the Village of Port Jefferson and the Port Jefferson Conservancy to present Artists United Against Breast Cancer, a juried art show at the Port Jefferson Village Center. The show will feature works inspired by the

personal transformation, hope, love, fear, loss and victory associated with breast cancer. The show’s theme will be “Victors of Survival, A Celebration of the Warrior Within Each of Us.” Proceeds from sales of the art will benefit the Fortunato Breast Health Center. October 1st Paint Port Pink Tree Lighting Ceremony – Mayor Margot Garant will flip the switch to light up the Village Hall tree in pink lights at a ceremony that kicks off Paint Port Pink. Everyone is invited to the tree lighting, which will include music by local school groups. At the same time, Village Hall, Mather Hospital and other buildings will be awash in pink light, Theatre Three’s marquee will feature pink lights, local retailers will

have pink lights in their windows and downtown fountains will be “pinked.” October 1st through October 31st Edna Louise Spear Elementary students will launch their Your Change Can Make Change promotion, collecting change for the Fortunato Breast Health Center using the Center’s giant hourglass. Port Jefferson Middle School students will sell and wear pink shoe laces and Frisbees to raise awareness and raise funds for the Breast Center. Earl L. Vandermeulen H.S. cheerleaders and the Student Organization will begin their Flamingo Flocking fundraising campaign. The pink plastic suburban icons will be placed on the lawns of friends and supporters

along with a note explaining that friends or family paid to have them “flocked” and explaining that if they make a donation, the flock will migrate to the yard of any relative or friend they choose. October 5th The 9th annual Pink Rock Golf Classic at the Port Jefferson Country Club. The event benefits the Fund for Uninsured at the Fortunato Breast Health Center and breast cancer treatment services at Mather Hospital. Registration is at 11 a.m. followed by a barbecue lunch at 11:30 a.m. and a shot gun start at 1 pm. October 23rd The 50th Anniversary One Enchanted Evening Gala at the Hyatt Regency Long Island, Hauppauge, from 7 to 11 p.m. Mather’s annual gala, which includes

the presentation of the Community Service Award and Theodore Roosevelt Awards for service to the hospital and the community, raises funds for the Fortunato Breast Health Center. Wings of Hope Spearheading this year’s Walk for Beauty, in a Beautiful Place, cancer survivors, town officials, sponsors and more will participate in “Wings of Hope,” a series of ceremonies which will include the release of birds with messages symbolizing the hope in the fight against breast cancer. Supervisor Edward P. Romaine and Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright will kick-off the first event at Brookhaven Town Hall. The Ward Melville Heritage Organization with Committee Co-chairs Gloria Rocchio, President, WMHO;

Honorable Kara Hahn, Suffolk County Legislator and Carol Simco, Stony Brook Fire Department, will once again host the Walk for Beauty on October 25th, with an 8:30 a.m. registration, in picturesque Stony Brook Village. For the second year in a row, participants can choose from three events in one with a 4K Color Splash, 4K/6K Walk and a 10K “Hercules on the Harbor” timed run sanctioned by USA Track & Field. Proceeds will go directly to a Targeted Research Fund at Stony Brook Medicine for breast cancer research and the

WMHO Unique Boutique for prosthesis and wigs. The route takes participants through historic Stony Brook, Avalon Park and Preserve and a scenic route past historic landmarks and homes which will be adorned with pink bows. Bows can be purchased at WMHO’s Educational & Cultural Center for a $5 contribution. Bands and various music will be performed along the route as well. Supervisor Ed Romaine has announced that the Town is offering discounted adoption fees at the Brookhaven Animal Shelter for the month of September. The normal adoption fees of $137 for a dog and $125 for a cat have been reduced to only $50 for dogs and $40 for cats and includes free neuter
