Helping our residents and our local businesses is critical to the state of our local economy, and these programs only further that aim.” The Department of Labor additionally formed a partnership with The EAC Network to assist Career Couture with securing and collecting donations from different organizations, including from various wholesale providers, non-profit organizations and Suffolk County residents. “This is a classic example of a publicprivate partnership. EAC has been working with Suffolk County for years, we have many different programs, we have very effective programing, and this is certainly one

of them,” said Lance Elder, President and CEO of EAC Network. “We are just pleased with the 1,000 people [served], and we have over 2,000 suits in our warehouse facilities for Career Couture. We look forward to continuing this relationship.” Career Couture serves both men and women in Suffolk County who are registered with the One-Stop Employment Center and have a confirmed scheduled job interview. The program also provides services to veterans and their spouses, and since its inception, has served hundreds of veterans. The boutique receives referrals from veteran shelters, family service organizations, nonprofit organizations, and walkins. “I’ve spent the last two

years in construction, and after I had an injury, I didn’t have any clothes to wear to an interview. I had nothing but five pair of construction boots, some jeans and some neon green and orange shirts,” said Erica Prince, a Career Couture beneficiary and an Army veteran. “With the clothes that June Kirby gave me, when I got to work, I received so many compliments, because nobody really dressed like me, and it made me feel really good. Whatever job you’re doing, you always need some form of dress or business attire, even in construction. It [Career Couture] has helped tremendously.” “Having an extensive experience in Human Resources, I know the importance of dressing for success for an interview,” said

Teens Honored at Art Reception More than three dozen teen art and design students in the Art League of Long Island’s Fashion Design, Architecture, and Pre-College Portfolio programs celebrated their achievements at a gallery exhibition and reception held in the League’s Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery on August 21st. Saratoga Springs, home of the world-famous race course, the sprawling Adirondack Mountains… and utter tranquility. My family and I have been going to Saratoga for the better part of my life each summer, our little “home away from home” where the air is fresher, the people are friendlier and the city welcomes you as one of its own. Primarily a “summer town,” Saratoga is perhaps best known for its thoroughbred racing; but that is certainly only a small aspect of what it has to offer. Simple wandering down Broadway, the main strip of town, will afford you

endless hours of browsing in the quaint shops, eating at the dozens of restaurants and bars, wandering through the two beautiful parks and gawking at the gorgeous multi-million dollar homes. If you wander slightly off the beaten path, you will find the National Racing Museum, the National Dance Museum and the grounds of Yaddo Gardens, an artists’ retreat housing some of the most beautiful and exotic plants within its gates. Skidmore College calls Saratoga home as well, as it cultivates the next generation of artists and, with them, the artistic vibe which reverberates throughout the city. The Saratoga Performing Arts Center, located within the cozy confines of Saratoga State Park, welcomes cultural performances of all genres

throughout the summer, from the NYC Ballet to the Philadelphia Orchestra to some of the most popular national musical acts. Another staple of the schedule is the annual Jazz Festival, a two-day event which brings together thousands of people on the lawn to picnic and enjoy a common love. Of course, Saratoga Springs has plenty to offer throughout the year; but there is something about those late summer weekends, that mixture of sunshine and slight chill in the air, the tailend of racing season and the beginning of a new college year, which seems like the best of all worlds. Indeed, how happy I am that Saratoga has become a part of my world, at least for a brief moment each summer.

For the past 47 years, members of the Fuoco family have come together to organize and host the Annual Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival, benefitting Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. This year’s event, which is once again being held at the Bellport Country Club, is scheduled to take place on Thursday, September 15th. Located on the east end of Long Island, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a place of summer and weekend respite for children and young adults ages six to 21 with physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to provide campers with a welcoming and encouraging environment inclusive of medical care, along with activities such as swimming, singing, campfires and tending to an animal farm, all while developing invaluable lifelong friendships that they may otherwise never have the opportunity to enjoy. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck’s most popular sessions are over the summer, but it does offer fall and spring sessions as well. Fuoco Golf Feastival Chairman Steve Fuoco, President of the Camp PaQua-Tuck Patrons Group, along with two of his children, Katy Fuoco-Hill and Jimmy Fuoco, assist in running key operations

of the tournament, along with an active committee of family, fellow Rotarians and friends. The Fuoco family’s longstanding connection with Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck began with Steve’s sister, Beth Ann Fuoco-Santos’, attendance at the camp for many years. To this day, the Fuoco family continues to be involved with the camp, annually organizing the Memorial Golf Feastival, which has raised nearly $1.5 million in support of the camp. This year’s honorees are the partners of the law firm Rizzi, Schwarz and Tarakas, LLP, who have been supporters of the Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival for many years due to the friendship between event founder Buddy Fuoco and the firm’s founding partner, Vitro Rizzi. After Rizzi’s passing, his colleagues and surviving firm partners, Robert Schwarz, Janice Taraskas and Helen Butera, have continued his legacy of providing a steadfast commitment to community and volunteerism. As with previous outings, several Italian-themed Feastival Stands are presented throughout the course featuring meatballs and clams, pasta and wine, an Italian kitchen, an oyster bar, an Italian

Gourmet Deli, Zeppolas and Cannolis, sausage and peppers and gourmet pizza and craft beer. As is standard practice, there will once again be a contest for Longest Drive or Closest to the Pin on every hole, as well as a Hit the Green challenge on every par 3, a putting contest on the 19th hole and a holein-one prize car, courtesy of Brown’s Automotive Group. The event will conclude with a cocktail hour and dinner buffet, followed by a program and awards ceremony. Registration and breakfast will begin at 8:30 a.m. and tee-off time starts at 10 a.m. Though early reservations have already filled all of the available golfing spots, event organizers are taking names for a waitlist, dinner reservations and several sponsorship options are available on the Fuoco Memorial Golf Feastival Website, www.fuocogolf. com. I sit at the edge of the abyss waiting quietly without fear As I look around, my eyes widen to capture a glimpse of light To no avail I think to myself, how did I get here? Why am I lodged in the darkness of night? Sitting patiently without fear Passing moments are lost in the vast and endless black hole Time is neither fast nor slow How can this be? Courageously, I remain without fear Realizing I am nothing without the essence of the light guiding me Changing anxious thoughts Into peaceful bliss Still, I await my destiny without fear I stand at the edge of the abyss waiting quietly A sudden breeze startles me and reverberates throughout my being I look up I’m mesmerized by a cavern of light far beyond my reach Smiling, I stare and seize the light It explodes like a star that opens to its first breath of life Proudly displayed beyond my reach Without fear, I walk away

adulthood. Having seen the impact of the program on the participants, the Art League recognized a need to provide students the opportunity to pursue other avenues in the art and design fields. In the summer of 2016, the Art League of Long Island launched Pre-College Programs for students interested in learning what it takes to become an Architect or Fashion Designer. Taught by established and practicing Architects and Fashion Designers, teens age 13 to 18 gained a deeper knowledge of these design professions through hands-on contact in their chosen medium, improved their creative design skills, and learned about these industries as a whole. Although there was room for many more program participants, attendance in the first year of the Fashion and Architecture programs exceeded early expectations due to the generosity of donors who provided scholarships for students to attend the programs. Many thanks to the following scholarship sponsors: The

Dana Tengelsen Memorial Scholarship Award, The Lieutenant Colonel Joseph J. Fenty Scholarship Award, The Charles Schlapp CFP., Financial Management Scholarship Award, and the NYCB Foundation Scholarship Award. Adoption & Animal Welfare Day ASPCA Adoption and Animal Welfare Day celebrated its sixth year at the 41st annual Hampton Classic offering several types of animals for adoption. In addition to horses, dogs and cats, this year for the first time the Day included various breeds of rabbits that were rescued in a joint effort between the ASPCA and NYPD. Valerie Angeli, ASPCA senior director of equine and special projects, and Jill Rappaport, TV host and animal-welfare advocate, welcomed area horse rescues that took part in a presentation in the Anne Aspinall Ring. Those participating included: Our Farm Equine Rescue of North Salem, NY, which brought a large pony and a Thoroughbred/Warmblood Cross; the ReRun Thoroughbred Adoption of East Greenbush, NY, that brought three former Thoroughbred racehorses and the Kaeli Kramer

Foundation of Melville, NY, which brought two Mustangs. The mustangs were not available for adoption. They served as ambassadors for other wild mustangs needing protection. In addition, several local rescue organizations staffed booths with numerous dogs, cats and rabbits available for adoption. They included: Gimme Shelter Animal Rescue, Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons, Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation, Tails of Courage, Last Chance Animal Rescue, and Shelter Chic. “It’s such an honor for me to be here. This is the sixth year we have been doing this,” said Rappaport. “This is really special for me because it shines a light on these animals in need. I am so grateful to the Hampton Classic Horse Show, one of the most beautiful, special and prestigious shows in the world for allowing

an event like this to take place so that people can understand the plight of all of these horses around the country.” Four riders who have been named by ASPCA officials as EquineWelfare Ambassadors also participated: Georgina Bloomberg, Hayley Barnhill, Brianne Goutal, and Jessica Springsteen. “I think it’s very special for all of us to be able to come here and give back a little bit before we compete in this amazing horse show,” said Bloomberg who has served as an ambassador and ASPCA Board Member. “We are all very lucky to be here and our horses are very lucky to have good homes. Today is all about being able to give back a little bit and help the horses that are not as fortunate.” Goutal was the first Equine-Welfare Ambassador ever named by the ASPCA. “I have been involved with the ASPCA

since 2005,” said Goutal. “There is a huge population of horses that have been mistreated or abandoned or people simply can’t afford. There is a dire need to help these animals. I am really grateful to the ASPCA and it’s very important to make people aware of what is going on because the animals really need it.” Barnhill and Springsteen demonstrated the capabilities of two of the horses riding them for a short while in front of an appreciative crowd. Those horses, as well as the Thoroughbreds, may be adopted by contacting the rescue organizations that brought them to the Hampton Classic. Shanette Barth Cohen, executive director of the Hampton Classic, was also in attendance and addressed the crowd. “We are so pleased to have a platform to help find forever homes for dogs, cats, rabbits and

horses in need of a home because there are so many animals that do not have a home right now. We truly appreciate all of the hard work that all those organizations do to save animals in need.” The Hampton Classic Horse Show runs through Sunday, September 4th, at its pristine Bridgehampton, NY, venue. For this year’s 41st annual edition, a fourth FEI class has been added to the schedule in addition to more than 200 classes of competition for horses and riders of all ages and abilities. A wide range of hunter, jumper and equitation classes are offered at all levels, from leadline all the way up to grand prix. Classes are also featured for riders with disabilities. In addition to the six show rings, the Hampton Classic features a Boutique Garden with more than 80 vendors for an amazing shopping experience, a wide selection of dining options

and a Farmer’s Market, all on its immaculate 60-acre show grounds. Meeting the Challenge

At this year’s Marcum Workplace Challenge, employees from Catholic Health Services (CHS) once again rose to the occasion, with winning results. Team CHS took 1st place among coed teams for the Healthcare Challenge and earned 2nd place out of all 46 coed teams, with a time of 1:40:31. In addition, Stephanie Bazan, of CHS’s Mercy Medical Center, placed within the top 5 women runners, at 22

minutes and 48 seconds. Cathy Magone, also from Mercy, earned the 4th spot in the Women’s Top Dog category, coming in at 43:10. Collectively, with a time of 2:25:59, CHS’s female competitors secured a place in the top 20 women’s teams participating in the event, while CHS’s male runners clocked 2:13:32, placing them 52nd among the men’s teams. The annual Marcum Workplace Challenge is

a 3.5-mile run/walk for charity, combined with camaraderie and the competitive spirit. For more than a decade, thousands of Long Islanders have come together to participate in the high-profile event held at Jones Beach. Marina Improvements Supervisor Romaine and Councilwoman Cartright recently toured the Port Jefferson Marina to inspect improvements to the facility completed during the summer. The Brookhaven Town Department of Parks invested $200,000 in capital projects for improvements to the marina. They include the installation of new decking which has been extended out to the seawall, and the addition of new electric service to the seawall which can now accommodate boats up to 150-feet. A

new fire prevention system was installed throughout the marina for increased safety, as well as new bathroom facilities in the Port Jefferson marina tower. The tower itself was also renovated with new doors, windows, siding, electrical, and energy efficient lighting. The improvements will continue into the fall as new floating docks and pilings will be added on the seawall. The Brookhaven Town marina is located in Port Jefferson Village on East Broadway. It opens

the second Saturday of May and closes the first Sunday of November. The marina offers many amenities including 174 boat slips, seasonal docking for residents, transient docking for residents and nonresidents, electric hookups, boat ramp, pump-out boat, bathrooms, showers, laundry machines, bags of ice and a soda machine. Prepping for High School Rocky Point High School incoming freshman class recently reunited with classmates and learned about their new school during a summer orientation program. Following a bagel

breakfast, the group met with members of the school’s administrative team and guidance staff to review graduation requirements, the attendance policy, the code of conduct and discuss the

On August 20th, the 2nd annual “Run the Farm 4 Mile Challenge” was held in Centereach. Brookhaven Town Councilman Kevin LaValle and Suffolk County Legislator Tom Muratore co-sponsored the event that started at Oxhead Elementary School and finished at the 11-acre Bethel Hobbs Farm. Over 200 runners participated

and more than $6,000 was raised. All proceeds from the race benefit the farm to help provide fresh wholesome produce to those in need. The farm is also an educational place for local businesses, schools and other organizations to volunteer and to improve the quality of life in our community. Mr. Kollar received his Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from Hartwick College and a Master of Science Degree in Educational Administration from Long Island University-CW Post.

Water Samples to Be Tested As part of a proactive effort to safeguard students and staff, the Port Jefferson School District’s Board of Education and administration contracted with Environscience, an environmental consulting and testing firm, to collect and test water samples for lead. F o l l o w i n g Environmental Protection Agency protocols, water samples from 126 drinking water sources were collected on June 29th using a first draw method. First draw includes gathering samples without letting the water run prior to testing. While the EPA recommends remediation of samples that exceed 20 ppb, the district opted to use a more stringent

guideline of 15 ppb. Nine samples that demonstrated a concentration of lead in excess of 15 ppb went through two additional testing processes. For these tests, samples were gathered after water was run for both 15 seconds and 60 seconds. The results of the second and third water tests indicated decreased levels of lead; however, all sites that tested above 15 ppb were immediately disconnected and remediation plans drawn up. Under the remediation plan faucet on the lab tables in middle school rooms A206 and A102 and high school room 405 will be replaced. A middle school water fountain near room A111 and another

in the high school’s wood shop will be replaced with new drinking fountains that meet the EPA standard for lead free products. Additionally, a thirdfloor high school faculty bathroom sink faucet will be replaced. Already, the district has removed a spigot in the high school boys’ team coaches’ bathroom due to nonuse over the past decade. The district also replaced faucets attached to the middle school kitchen hand wash station and high school boys’ team coach’s bathroom. These faucets will be retested for lead. Tech Challenge Partner School-Business Partnerships of Long Island (SBPLI) has officially been appointed as a FIRST® Tech Challenge Affiliate Partner. Effective immediately, SBPLI will assume responsibility for managing all aspects of the program in Nassau and Suffolk counties. The inaugural event will be the official FIRST Tech Challenge Kick Off at Half Hollow Hills High School East on Saturday, September 10th, at 12 noon. During the coming

FIRST Long Island season, there will be a practice scrimmage, four FIRST Tech Challenge Qualifiers and a Championship. Started in 2005, FIRST Tech Challenge is designed for students, grades seven to 12, to compete in a head-to-head robotics competition, using a sporting tournament model, which falls within the parameters of the annual theme of the Challenge. Over the course of a 10-week build period, teams are asked to design,

build and program a robot using a reusable kit of parts and Java or MIT App Inventor software. At the close of the build period, the teams then compete in an alliance format against other alliances of teams – a style dubbed by FIRST as “coopertition.” Teams are made up of students, coaches and mentors who all work together to develop a strategy and build robots based on sound engineering principles. In each round of the

tournament, awards are given for the competition as well as for community outreach, design and other real-world accomplishments. The ultimate goal of FIRST Tech Challenge is to reach more young people at a lower-cost, furthering the opportunities for accessible STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education to everyone. “By incorporating FIRST Tech Challenge into its purview, SBPLI
