hundreds of thousands of people affected by what is being called the worst flooding disaster in U.S. history. The American Red Cross is working day and night to get help to where it is needed most. All funds donated will go to provide emergency assistance such as food, water, diapers, clothing and more. Hurricane Harvey has already set an all-time record for rainfall in the lower 48 states and additional rain is expected in the coming days. Since the storm hit late last week, 50 counties in the affected region have flooded, leaving more than 30,000 people displaced in emergency shelters. As of Monday, as many as 13

million people from Texas and Louisiana had been affected by flood watches and warnings. The American Red Cross is a nationally recognized non-profit charitable organization of volunteers and staff who work to deliver vital services. These include providing relief and support to those in crisis to helping you be prepared to respond in emergencies.The American Red Cross has been working around the clock along the Gulf Coast to help the thousands of people whose lives have been devastated by Hurricane Harvey. As part of these efforts, the Red Cross is currently serving approximately 130,000 meals a day to Texans affected or displaced by the storm. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced that Suffolk County has joined with the American Red Cross of Long Island to create an online donation platform for all residents to aid the victims of Hurricane Harvey. Stuff-a-Bus Sort-a-thon The Long Island Nets and the United Way of Long Island recently held a Sort-a-Thon event at NYCB Live, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in partnership with Target as part of the 2017 Annual Stuff-A-Bus campaign. The Sort-A-Thon featured more than 75 volunteers including Senator Elanie Phillips and Senator Kemp Hannon, along with members of their respective staffs,

Target employees, representatives of the Long Island Nets and members of Union 338. Volunteers sorted thousands of school supplies to be donated to the Uniondale School District to benefit students in need for the upcoming 2017-2018 school year. The school supplies included backpacks, binders, colored pencils, notebooks, glue sticks and other useful tools that have been collected from more

work with the DEC Division of Law Enforcement. He is a Field training officer and a Firearms instructor, training new and current police officers inside the DEC as well as outside agencies. He is also as a member of the NYS DEC/ DLE Special Operations Group (SOG) completing the DEC Basic Tactical Operator’s Course in 2015 and the SWAT Operator Course in 2016. For the past 11 years, ECO Fay’s professional work ethic and commitment to his profession resulted in him being nominated and receiving the ShikarSafari Club International Officer of the Year award. Tim resides in Northport in Suffolk County with his wife Anne and four daughters, Emily, Lauren, Nora and Valerie.

successfully networks with outside agencies and organizations, and he actively accepts outreach projects for the Division, helping to spread the word for protection of the environment and the State’s natural resources. ECO Fay was recognized for numerous successful marine fish and wildlife investigations involving shellfish, crustacean and food fish. With his diverse workload, he was also responsible for multiple cases concerning the unlawful disposal of solid waste. This recognition also includes his work as a Field Training Officer, directing and guiding new officers in the field, locating, identifying, enforcing big game violations and bringing the charges to a successful resolution in court. ECO Fay is trained and certified in many fields of

the important part ECOs play in local, national, and international wildlife conservation. ECO Fay grew up in the Town of Champlain in Clinton County and after graduating high school joined the US Army serving 21 years, retiring from the New York Army National Guard. He attended Buffalo State Collage graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree and Graduate work in Multidisciplinary Studies. He attended and graduated from the 17th Basic Academy for Uniformed Officers, a twenty-six week residential police academy held in 2007. After graduation Tim was assigned to Region 1 and patrolled Suffolk County enforcing New York’s Environmental Conservation Law, including investigating hunting, fishing and trapping activity,

Most of us reading this column have memories of Hurricane Sandy, and many people are still rebuilding from it all.

As we watch the terrible devastation of Hurricane Harvey in Texas, we feel so much compassion for all who have been affected by this disaster - the pictures and stories have been unbelievable.

It reminds us all that we are all subject to events and circumstances in our lives that are unexpected, and out of our control. We should always be ready to help people in need.

As was true here with Sandy, it is amazing how people, organizations and companies have helped by volunteering their time, energy, resources and money. The outpouring of compassion has been, and continues to be, amazing. It reminds us all that, even during this

The historic Smithtown Landing United Methodist Church will be holding a Fall service on Sunday September 17th, at 3 p.m. The church is only open to the public twice a year and is located on the corner of Landing Avenue and Oakside Road in Smithtown. First organized in 1795, the church was built in 1834 and dedicated

in October of that year. Originally, the church had only a center aisle - upon entering, men would seat themselves on the left and women on the right. The names of the founders can still be seen among the headstones in the cemetery that surrounds the church. The area was known as Smithtown Landing and the church was affectionately called

the “little church in the woods.” The Reverend Carole Paynter will lead the service accompanied by Donald Reinertsen on our pump organ. Refreshments will be served after the service by the Ladies Auxiliary. Please join us to celebrate, sing and connect with Smithtown’s past!

It is a month of transition, as children head back to school, young adults pack up for college, and the rest of us try to adjust to the lessening light, the chillier temperatures and embrace all that the new season has to offer. With that, South Bay’s Seasons Magazine arrives in the mailboxes of 100,000 homes and businesses this week, debuting its new format and expanding its reach to over twice as many readers. For those who will be receiving this publication for the first time, we hope you enjoy this taste of Long Island, featuring a plethora of upcoming autumn activities, delicious recipes perfect for

sampling, seasonal articles on upcoming holidays, and home improvement hints. Motivation to be More Active Today’s students arguably have more on their plates than any generation that came before them. But even with their hectic schedules, kids still have free time, which many are not always using in the healthiest ways possible. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly one-third high school students play video games or computer games for

three or more hours on an average school day. Sedentary lifestyles can increase kids’ risk for being overweight or obese, and many parents struggle in their efforts to encourage their school-aged children to get off the couch and embrace physical activities. The following are a handful of strategies concerned parents can employ as they attempt to motivate youngsters to be more physically active.

Choose the right activity. Physical activity and organized sports are not one and the same. Kids can still be physically active even if they are not athletic or if they are simply not interested in sports. Find an activity kids can embrace, such as hiking, swimming or even riding bikes, and they will be more likely to get off the couch. Limit screen time. Kids spend lots of time in front

of computer and television screens, which can be detrimental to their overall health. Parents can place restrictions on the amount of time kids are allowed to spend surfing the Internet, playing video games and watching television, encouraging youngsters to spend time enjoying the great outdoors or playing with friends rather than spending it staring at a screen . Join in the fun. Parents

can set positive examples by being physically active and even exercising with their children. Rather than retiring to the couch after dinner, take nightly walks or bike rides as a family. This is a great way to get kids off the couch, but also a great way to spend more time together as a family. Involve kids in your own pursuits. Parents who are weekend warrior athletes can involve their kids in their own activities. Take

kids along on weekend jogs, kayaking trips and so on, all the while explaining the important role physical activity plays in living a healthy lifestyle.

Councilman Kevin LaValle announced today that the Town of Brookhaven has been awarded the $10,000 PetSafe 2017 “Bark for Your Park” grant for the Selden Dog Park. The grant money will be used to install two water stations and make improvements to the park which is located on Boyle Road in Selden. Since the launch of its nationwide “Bark for Your Park” program in 2011, PetSafe has been working to create more off-leash

dog parks around the country that bring likeminded members of the community together and provide a place for dogs to receive exercise and socialization. PetSafe has helped fund 64 off-leash dog parks in 40 states since 2011. Councilman LaValle said, “I took into consideration what the residents have asked for and watering stations was the number one request. Thanks to PetSafe, we can now get the job done and make some cosmetic improvements

which will enhance visitors experience at the park.” When Councilman LaValle took office in January of 2014, one of his early initiatives was to revive the concept of bringing a dog park to Selden. He worked with pet owners and the Brookhaven Town Parks Department to design and open the park in July of 2014. Since then, Councilman LaValle has been working to enhance the park for pets and people alike. On Monday, August 28th, Congressman Lee Zeldin hosted a Hurricane Preparedness Seminar at Brookhaven Town Hall in Farmingville, to provide residents with information regarding hurricane preparedness and recovery. This year, forecasters predict an above-normal hurricane season in the Atlantic. Hurricanes and tropical storms have the potential to cause serious

damage to Long Island coastal and inland areas, including storm surge, heavy rainfall, coastal and inland flooding, high winds, and tornadoes. To help Long Islanders prepare for these types of storms, Congressman Zeldin hosted a seminar with representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), National Oceanic and Atmospheric

Administration (NOAA), American Red Cross and Suffolk County Fire Rescue and Emergency Services (FRES), who provided information to help residents prepare for, stay safe during, and recover from hurricane storm systems. Residents also learned more about how these organizations measure, track, and forecast hurricane activity.

Heading to 6th Grade Incoming sixth-graders at Rocky Point Middle School recently had a chance to get acquainted to their new surroundings during a two-day orientation program. On the first day of

the program, students gathered in the school cafeteria for a fun-filled welcome picnic before taking a tour of the school, stopping in each classroom and special area room. Then, joined by the

school’s upperclassmen, sixth-graders returned the next day to set up their lockers and take a second walkthrough of their class schedule.

The Longwood Board recently presented community member Christopher Reilly with the Carl Verdi Pride Award. This annual award recognizes a person who, over a sustained period, built lasting bridges between the school district and the community. Over 50 Fair In mid-September, the Over 50 Fair will once again offer Long Islanders an opportunity to meet with businesses and nonprofits who have terrific products and services geared towards adults age 50+ and their adult children. The Over 50 Fair, in its eighth year, is the largest “over 50” expo on Long Island. This year’s event, on Sunday, September 17th from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Long Island Hilton/Huntington, its new easier location, will have over 80 exhibitors and over 30 speakers including television reality favorites. Kimberly Sherbach of Wantagh was one of the bachelorettes on the 19th edition of ABC’s hit romance reality series,

“The Bachelor,” in 2015. She will be discussing what it was like to be on the TV show and do a “Q & A.” In addition, Kimberly will be teaching a yoga class. Chef Maria Petridis was crowned a “Chopped Champion” on Food Network’s Chopped in December. Maria, of Maria’s Mediterranean Seafood & Grill in Bayside, will be doing a Greek cooking demo that is sure to be well-attended. Chef Sophie Bravo of Food Network’s Chopped Junior will be doing two demonstrations. Sophie, an adorable 11 year-old, will be doing a meringue class as well as a cake decorating with fondant class. Others include talks on reiki, astrology, hot

flashes, trusts, reinventing yourself, knitting, a country line dancing class, and a dance performance by the Seasoned Steppers, a group of women who are age 66+ and are former Ms. New York Senior America pageant contestants. The Over 50 Fair is the brainchild of East Hills resident Barbara Kaplan, who also coordinates events at area malls under the business name Specialty Connections. “Because Americans are living longer, they should seek to live life to its fullest. There are so many opportunities here on Long Island. The purpose of the Over 50 Fair is to show people where to find them.”

AHRC Suffolk, a notfor-profit organization supporting people with disabilities in Suffolk County, has been awarded $125,500 in grants from the Trustee Management Board of NYSARC Trust Services to support AHRC Suffolk’s guardianship and recreation programs. NYSARC Trust Services administers supplemental needs trusts (SNT) that can make dramatic improvements to the lives of people with disabilities while enabling individuals to maintain eligibility for public benefits programs, such as Medicaid and SSI. For 2017, NYSARC Trust Services is proud to fulfill its commitment to enhancing the lives of

people with disabilities by awarding a total of $2,793,500 in grants to NYSARC Chapters statewide. This year, AHRC Suffolk received $110,500 to provide guardianship services for people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities who would not otherwise have a legal guardian or advocate. Supported by Chapter staff and community volunteers, AHRC Suffolk’s Guardianship Program currently provides guardianship supports and services to 19 people and is ready to assist 25 more as a Standby or Alternate Standby guardian. NYSARC Trust Services

also awarded AHRC Suffolk $15,000 to develop new recreational opportunities to enrich the lives of the more than 2,500 members it serves. AHRC Suffolk plans to use the recreation grant funds for their Saturday Recreation Program. This grant enables the individuals to enjoy community outings like apple and pumpkin picking, zumba and yoga classes and to purchase supplies and equipment for indoor activities such as bowling, movies and arts and crafts projects. New Swim Program The YMCA of Long Island is excited to announce the launch of a new swim lessons program for members at all Y locations beginning in September. This is the first time in more than 20 years that the YMCA will update the methodology behind its program. Registration for the YMCA of Long Island’s new swim program began August 20th, and the program will officially launch on September 10th and run through November 18th. “The YMCA of the USA and the YMCA of Long Island are entirely dedicated to the safety of our community members, which is why we found it more important than ever to update our swim program to best prepare our members with the ability to be safe around the water and swim confidently,” said Anne Brigis, President and CEO of the YMCA of Long Island. “The new program will move away from the traditional swim training mechanisms such as floatation devices and instead focus on selfrescue skills and improved swim techniques.” The upgraded program includes three-categories: Swim Starters, Swim Basics and Swim Strokes,

through which swimmers will gain confidence and technical skill as they become highly proficient swimmers. In addition, once swimmers have completed the stages of swim, they can move onto Pathways, which are specialized tracks, including Competition, Leadership and Recreation. “This new program is designed for participants to feel safe and confident around water. It works on preventative activities such as asking permission to go into the water to working on the self-rescue benchmark skills JumpPush-Turn-Grab and SwimFloat-Swim,” said Tracie Busch, Aquatic Director at the Patchogue Family YMCA. “As they progress with the swim basics of the program they will learn and build to competitive swim strokes. This new approach gives a more fluid progression of skills that allows swimmers to feel a sense of achievement as they progress at their own pace. This results in more confident swimmers who stick with lessons and develop a love for swimming that can last a lifetime.” Swim Starters introduces infants and toddlers, ages six months to

three years, to the aquatic environment and focuses on developing swim readiness skills through fun and confidencebuilding experiences. Parents also learn how to supervise children in the water, how to prevent accidents and how to plan for emergencies. Swim Basics develops personal water safety and basic swimming skills in students of all ages. Swimmers develop a high level of comfort in the water by practicing safe water habits, engaging in underwater exploration, and learning how to swim to safety and exit if they fall into a body of water. Swim Strokes introduces and refines stroke technique in older students (school age, teens and adults). Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique, developing skills that prevent chronic disease, increase social-emotional and cognitive well-being and foster a lifetime of physical activity. Founders Day Celebration The Long Island Game Farm – Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo celebrated its first ever Founder’s Day – A Family Appreciation Day by offering guests $6 admission for adults and free admission for children on Saturday, August 26th. The park also gave out free backpacks and bracelets to the first 500 visitors. During the event, guests were treated to free face painting and a story hour with Long Island Game Farm owner Melinda Novak and her mother Diane Novak, who founded the park with her husband Stanley Novak in 1970. “Our Founder’s Day

Celebration was a great way to honor my parents, who put so much thought and care into starting this park, as well as the guests who have continually supported us through the decades,” says Melinda Novak, CoOwner/Vice President, Long Island Game Farm Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo. “With the power of social media, we’ve found that many families have fond memories of the park in the 1970s and 1980s, and are now bringing their children and grandchildren to our zoo. Softball Champions The Suffolk County Police Department’s 2nd Precinct Softball Team won its first championship in the Town of Huntington Fire Department league on Tuesday, August 22nd. The team, led by pitcher Chris Rathje, swept the Commack Fire Department team in a best of three series. Commack was the defending champions and was shell-shocked by the 2nd precinct squad which scored over 40 runs during the two-game sweep. Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay has played for the 2nd Precinct’s softball team for the last three years. “This team is comprised of

a great group of guys who work hard and constantly pick each other up, which is the definition of a true team,” said Legislator Lindsay. “Throughout the past 20 years of playing softball, I have never played alongside such a dedicated group. I am so honored to be part of this team and this championship.” Approaching the playoffs, the 2nd Precinct Softball Team finished in first place with a record of 21-7. Their dominance continued throughout the competitions, by never losing and never trailing in a game except for the 1st inning of the 2nd finals game.

Chris Rathje the 2nd Precinct’s veteran pitcher returned for the finals after suffering a leg injury in the final double header of the regular season. Rathje had great command of his pitches throughout the night, limiting walks to four intentional walks to Commack’s best hitter. He also had impressive at bats with seven hits in two games, driving in four runs and scoring five times., “I felt good on the mound and confident in our defense behind me,” said Chris Rathjie. “This was a real team effort with everyone contributing towards our victory.”

Getting the Most Out of College Only 60 percent of college freshmen will graduate within 6 years according to the latest report from the National Center for Educational Statistics. That’s pretty scary stuff for collegebound students and their tuition-paying parents especially if loans are part of the financial formula. Many high schools, colleges and universities emphasize their goals of producing well-rounded students. Extracurricular activities teach students important life lessons, provide them opportunities to socialize and often stimulate their minds and bodies in ways that differ from the stimulation provided in the classroom. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau states that, in 2014, 57 percent of children between the ages of 6 and 17 participate in at least one after-school

extracurricular activity. Children are more likely to participate in sports than clubs or lessons, such as music, dance and language, but each of these activities can be beneficial to students’ development. Students who participate in extracurricular activities may want to limit their participation to 20 hours per week. This is according to a group of professors from Stanford University and Villanova University who have been collecting data on the issue since 2007. In their report

“Extracurricular Activity in High-Performing School Contexts: Stress Buster, Booster or Buffer?”, Jerusha Conner and Sarah Miles found that 87 percent of kids who would be considered to have packed schedules were perfectly happy unless they were doing more than four hours a day. The “over-scheduling hypothesis” may be overhyped. This is the concern that too much organized activity participation leads to poor developmental

outcomes. This hypothesis also suggests that hectic schedules also undermine family functioning, detract from schoolwork and possibly increase the risk of copycat behaviors and excessive competitiveness. However, in the study “The Over-Scheduling Hypothesis Revisited: Intensity of Organized Activity Participation During Adolescence and Young Adult Outcomes,” researchers J.L. Mahoney and Andrea Vest determined that, controlling for demographic factors and

from extracurriculars can level off when too many activities are being juggled. If a child is experiencing anxiety, sleeplessness or depression, or seems overly stressed, it could be time to reduce students’ time spent doing structured activities. It’s essential that families use the cues given by kids to assess what students can handle. And children should be encouraged to be honest with their parents about their extracurricular activities as well.

Choosing where to apply to college is a big decision that can affect the lives of young students for years to come. The college application process can have more immediate impacts as well, as U.S. News reported that the average college application fee was $41 in the spring of 2015, meaning families can expect to spend several hundred dollars just to apply to colleges. The rising cost of a college education coupled with a competitive job market only serve to emphasize the importance high school students and their families must place on deciding where to apply. The following are a handful of strategies families can employ to make students’ decisions regarding where to apply to college a little easier. Don’t hesitate from applying to a dream school. The Princeton Review defines dream schools as those colleges

or universities where a student’s academic credentials fall in the low end or below the school’s averages for students accepted the year prior. But even students who meet the academic requirements established by their dream schools may be hesitant to apply to such schools because of the cost of tuition. Students whose academic records fall just short of their dream schools’ criteria or whose financial means make attending their dream schools seem impossible should still apply to those schools. Financial aid might be available, and schools might look at more than just academic performance, particularly for students whose grades fall just short of last years’ average accepted applicants. Don’t be deterred by application fees. Stanford University’s application fee for 2017 was $90, making the school one of the more

Students should not expect each school to waive their application fees, but they also should not let those fees deter them from applying, especially if they meet or exceed the application requirements. But when choosing safety schools, students should pick schools that they would enjoy attending. Applying to a school simply because you can get in and not because you want to enroll there can make for an unpleasant college experience should you ultimately end up attending that college.
