Veteran Outreach Series Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announces multiple outreach events throughout the fall designed to give substantial information regarding disability and pension claims, including eligibility requirements and benefits, for Suffolk County veterans. The Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency (VSA) collaborates with other county agencies, such as the Suffolk County Office for the Aging and the Department of
Social Services, to inform veterans of potential benefits that may be available to them and to assist them in applying for them, including the VA’s “best kept secret” — pension funds available for the widows of veterans. The Veterans and Widows program includes Pension with Aid and Assistance. To qualify, the veteran or widow must require the assistance of another person with their daily living skills (such as bathing, dressing,
eating, or administering medication) and they must be paying a caregiver (family members may qualify) or live in an assisted living facility. “The Veterans Service Agency (VSA) brings a wealth of information to our residents,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “Our veterans have served the American people with honor and sacrifice. It’s important that we support their service when they come home by not only making sure they know
what is available to them, but helping them to access those resources.” “Suffolk County VSA is a valuable resource to the community,” said Director of Suffolk County Veteran Services Tom Ronayne. “Tasked with serving not only veterans but also Active Duty military, National Guard, Reserves, family members, dependents and survivors, we extend well into the community. Acknowledgements I have been putting this off for quite some time. This “final step,” if you will, penning my last column for South Bay. I told myself I would take my time with this one, write it well in advance of deadline, try to encapsulate everything in one epic, closing chapter. And yet, here I sit – 11:30 p.m. on the eve of my second to last day of work, staring at a mostly blank template as countless thoughts swirl in my brain.

While my last three columns have been vignettes of one sort or another – from birthday beginnings and numeric significance, to desktop mementos and the memories associated with them, to a flashback of my origins within the pages of the old Lindy hometown weekly – this one, well, this one leaves me at a bit of a loss for words. My career, this portion of it, has been largely defined by my ability to transcribe a feeling on paper, to relate to readers from all walks of life by telling stories – of my life, of my surroundings and my observations of the people within them. Always, though, the idea was to find a common thread, a unifying theme. Change. It is the one constant. A perfect theme for this transitional transcript, don’t you think? Over the last several weeks, I have received countless letters from fans, family, friends – even a few detractors – most of whom were avid followers of my writing, all of whom wanted to take the opportunity to wish me well on the next phase of my journey. There were even a few phone calls from those

Equity First Foundation
Equity First Foundation is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located here on Long Island. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life. This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community. They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. The mantra of this foundation is “Learn today to choose wisely tomorrow!” This organization holds hands-on workshops, where participants will be given course material, handouts and goals to accomplish. Some people they help through these workshops are those in women’s shelters, homeless shelters, veteran homes, at-risk communities, drug rehabilitation centers, senior centers and more.
As a way to benefit and honor certain individuals, this nonprofit holds many events throughout the year. Some of these events include their Dancing for a Cure event, which raises awareness and research for individuals who have or have had cancer; their Holiday Dream Mission, which assists families in financial distress during the holiday season; their Military Saves Week, which is geared toward assisting military members financially; and their Angel Awards, which honors women of Long Island who have created an impact in the areas of community, volunteer, philanthropy and business development! Equity First Foundation is available to provide educational presentations on an array of topics such as the importance of credit awareness, budgeting and mortgage modification. Businesses, civic groups, community centers and other groups can host seminars or workshops for their employees, members, the communityat-large, etc. If you are interested in scheduling a program, the opportunity is available! Lenny Kravitz Spreads Love Through Music By Allison Kugel Twenty-nine years after releasing his debut album, Lenny Kravitz is still letting love rule. The multi-Grammy award winning musician brings forth a conscious body of work with his latest album, Raise Vibration, out September 7th. Musically, Raise Vibration is an eclectic blend of the kind of stylistic rock n’ roll-funk sound that Kravitz is known for, with subtle nods to vintage R&B and choruses that sway towards pop appeal. His music puts you in a trance-like groove and defies all genre. Allison Kugel: You’ve said you were born to make music. Can you share your earliest memory where you became aware that music was going to be your life? Lenny Kravitz: For me the pivotal moment was going to see The Jackson 5, live at Madison Square Garden, when I was six years old. I was in the first grade. I had already been intently listening to their record. But I went to the show, and the next morning that was it! I was completely sold. I knew that’s what I wanted to do.
my favorite place to work; it’s my workshop. When I’m in the studio and I’ve got my equipment and all my instruments and everything is set up, that’s the magical place for me. It’s where I can flow. I jump around from instrument to instrument, and it’s wonderful.
It means having the desire to learn, to improve, and to face my faults and learn from them. I’m always looking to go higher. And taking as much ego out of myself as possible.
Allison Kugel: Do you record all of your instrumentals in addition to doing your vocals and producing?
Lenny Kravitz: I believe that God is my creator, our creator. Whether we realize it or not, I believe we are all created by the same God. I believe we are all one creation, we are all connected, and I believe that God is the ultimate source of love and all we are looking for.
Lenny Kravitz: Yes. I start on drums and then I go to a guitar, a bass, another guitar, keyboard, percussion… I keep layering as though I was painting, until my picture is complete. Allison Kugel: Your upcoming album is called Raise Vibration and the first single, It’s Enough, is a call-to-action anthem about political corruption and social and racial injustice. Was writing It’s Enough a form of therapy for you, and a way of turning hopelessness into empowerment?
Allison Kugel: What was it about The Jackson 5 that resonated with you?
Allison Kugel: It’s interesting to hear you say that. My son is half Jewish and half Jamaican, and he does the same thing. He tends to gravitate towards people he sees on television, in film, and with music, who have his skin tone and his hair. Lenny Kravitz: Yup! I have the same background, except I’m Jewish and Bahamian.
Lenny Kravitz: I react to the world. I actually recorded the song twice. I was trying to find the direction for the record. The way the song started, the first version of It’s Enough was a full-on guitar, bass, drum, punk rock song. It had an angry tone, because that felt like the proper reaction. And then I thought about it and ended up changing it and finding this groove, which is the polar opposite of how it started. I found that by being calm and centered, and by being quiet, it was more effective. It brought out a whole new feeling in the song, and I think it enables the listener to hear the lyrics even better.
Allison Kugel: When and where do you feel most creative and musical?
Allison Kugel: What does the title of your album, Raise Vibration, mean to you? And how do you raise your vibration? Do you meditate or pray?
Lenny Kravitz: It could be anywhere, but it’s [typically] in the studio. My studio is in the Bahamas. It’s
Lenny Kravitz: It means exactly that; waking up. I meditate, I pray, I try to be still, I try to be quiet… and listen.
Allison Kugel: I always say that when I enter a room, I never walk alone because I can feel the presence of God beside me; as well as my great grandparents, my grandparents, my parents, siblings and my son. I walk into a space with the energy of those who made me who I am. When you enter a space, who walks beside you? Lenny Kravitz: God is with me at all times which I am always aware of. And the energy of my mother, of my grandmother, of my grandfather. My daughter (actress, Zoe Kravitz), who is here with me on this earth, is always with me. Like you said, knowing that and knowing that spirit is far superior to anything here. The physical presence is wonderful, and something that we require and crave as human beings. We’re spiritual beings living a physical experience, but as you say, you recognize that you have these people with you and it just shows how strong spirit is and how strong energy is. My mother’s (the late actress, Roxie Roker) been gone for twenty plus years, and I can still feel her every day. Allison Kugel: Your music transcends genre. It’s a blend of rock, punk, blues, soul, pop; it’s everything. You can’t categorize it. I remember seeing a television clip of you from Oprah’s Master Class, where you tell the story of sitting in class as a young boy and you didn’t know which box to check off on a piece of paper asking you to identify your race. Everyone’s life has a spiritual theme. In your case it seems to be an ongoing theme where people want to put you in a box and label you, and you railing against that. Lenny Kravitz: People love a box (laughs)! They want to put you right in it, so they can easily define, for their own comfort, what you are. I’ve been fighting against that from day one in my life, and in my musical life. Going back to that time in school, I knew I was black, but I knew that wasn’t all I
was. I knew I was also Russian Jewish, and I knew that my great grandmother was full-blooded Cherokee Indian. My mother always taught me, “Yes, you’re black, but you’re just as much this and you’re just as much that. Don’t discount that.” If you’re mixed, like me and like your son, you don’t discount one of your parents. You’re just as much one as the other. But, what my mother did say to me when I was a child that I think was very smart, and I didn’t realize it until I got older, was, “Even though you’re mixed, society only wants to see you as black.” I didn’t understand that at age seven. Allison Kugel: Did you feel diminished by it at the age of seven? Lenny Kravitz: From what I recall, I remember thinking, “What does that mean?” Of course, as I grew and went through life, I understood what that meant. People aren’t going to see all the complexities and differences. People are going to see what they see, and that is the color of your skin. That was a very good lesson once it kicked in. I was like, “Okay, people don’t see everything for what it is.”
released, what will that day be like for you? Lenny Kravitz: When I’m finished with an album, I’m at that place where I let go and I’m excited that I’m finished. It’s always exciting getting a new project out. I hope the people who enjoy my music will get something beautiful from it and will relate to it. The main thing for me is that I expressed myself authentically to who I am, who I was at that moment in time, and that it represents me well. That to me is everything. That’s a success. Lenny Kravitz: The music that was made by these kids was not elementary; it wasn’t bubble gum, as they used to say back then about young artists. This was sophisticated, high-level music with the best musicians, the best producers, and [Michael] was one of the best singers who ever lived and who ever will live. It was a perfect storm for me, the way everything came together. On top of the music, the presentation and showmanship were top level and soulful, and these were people that I could identify with. They looked like me. I had the same hair… there were so many things that came together in my mind.

The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks will occur on Sunday, October 21st, 2018 at Jones Beach and Sunday, October 28th, 2018 at Suffolk County Community CollegeEastern Campus, uniting communities, honor those touched by the disease and raise awareness and funds for a world without breast cancer. The event at Jones Beach is the most attended event in the United States with over 65,000 volunteer participants, helping to raise nearly $3 million dollars. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is the largest network of breast cancer awareness events in the nation. The noncompetitive, inspirational event raises awareness and funds to end breast cancer and provide hope to ensure no one faces breast cancer
alone. Dollars raised help the American Cancer Society fund innovative breast cancer research; provide education and guidance to help people reduce their risk; and offer comprehensive patient support to those who need it most. In 2017, ACS staff helped guide more than 40,000 cancer patients through every step of their journey as they moved through the health care system, including helping with insurance problems, referring them to ACS and other local services, assisting caregivers and addressing obstacles to care. “Because of the determination of Making Strides supporters, the American Cancer Society is there for people in every community affected by breast cancer, whether they’re currently dealing with a diagnosis, may
face one in the future, or will avoid it altogether because of education and risk reduction,” said Patti Lestrange Mack, Communications Director for the American Cancer Society. “At the event, communities embrace a bittersweet mix of purpose – celebrating survivorship and paying meaningful tributes to loved ones lost. Smithsonian Museum Day
The festive atmosphere was the backdrop for the PTSAsponsored pizza, beverages and flavored ices served by parent volunteers. Students were met by Port Jefferson Middle School Principal Dr. Robert Neidig, who presented each of them a welcome gift of earbuds, which are a necessity for the school’s Google classroom features. Dr. Neidig then spoke about the independence that comes from being
in middle school as well as the responsibilities, including cultivating the characteristics of good citizenship. Assistant Principal Claudia Smith and numerous teachers were on hand to greet students, who also toured the school, worked on opening their assigned lockers, picked up their school supplies and were given their class schedules.
Highest Honor Earned
Local Southold student, Nick Smith, approached the Southold Historical Society in 2017 about his goal as a Boy Scout of earning Eagle Scout rank. He asked the Society what large project(s) might be needed. It had been apparent for some time that the Society was lacking places to sit and gather on the Museum
Complex. Many visitors pass through the complex grounds throughout the year including school groups, attendees at events such as the Candlelight Tour, weekend visitors who are touring the complex, etc. After brainstorming with the society director, it was decided that picnic tables and park benches would
be a much needed and much used addition to the grounds. Nick then began the task of planning his project, checking in with the Society all along the way. (Riverhead Building Supply supported the young student working on his Eagle Scout project by discounting the materials needed.) This spring, Southold Historical Society was thrilled when Nick, with the help of his troop and support of his family, completed the task and brought the finely-crafted tables and benches to the Society. The tables and benches both provide utility and adorn the grounds beautifully. In addition to the new benches, Nick even repainted the two lonely benches that were previously there. Now there are many places to sit and enjoy the remarkable
setting surrounded by the new boxwood garden, the traditional herb garden and the historic buildings. The Southold Historical Society was pleased to learn that Nick Smith earned the rank of Eagle Scout on June 13th, 2018. When he first approached the Society, Nick was a somewhat soft-spoken young man. Neither he, nor the society director, knew what to expect. But throughout the process Nick seemed to be more and more comfortable at the Museum. In fact, he was volunteering at a Historical Society event in late July and seemed “right at home.” No doubt, gracing the complex with the fine benches and table will help others feel equally “at home.” What a terrific accomplishment and what a terrific benefit to our community!

Sheriff's Week Open House Sheriff Errol D. Toulon Jr. is encouraging the public to come out to Celebrate NYS Sheriff’s Week by attending the Sheriff’s Open House and Family Day on Sunday, September 23rd at the Yaphank Jail located at 200 Glover Drive in Yaphank.
Sheriff’s Week celebrates the significant contributions made by the Office of the Sheriff in county government and in the statewide criminal justice system. The event is geared toward people of all ages and will feature jail tours (ages 12 and
over), exhibits, Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team demonstrations, a Troop Carrier Truck ride, K9 demonstrations, Operation Safe Child ID Cards, Senior ID Cards, a buggy obstacle course, aquatic robot, snacks, giveaways, games, music and much more.
The event will be cohosted by the Suffolk County Correction Officers Association, the Suffolk County Deputy Sheriffs PBA and the Suffolk County Association of Municipal Employees. When: Sunday, September 23rd from 10
