Vandermeulen High School and Amy Laverty has been named pre-K-8 assistant principal. Before joining the Port Jefferson School District, Haruthunian most recently served as the assistant principal at John F. Kennedy High School in the PlainviewOld Bethpage School District, where he served since 2015. Prior to that position, he served as supervisor of discipline at Wantagh High School. The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight W i s h celebrations. Senior citizens are the fastest growing population in the world. The number of Americans who are 65 and older is projected to more than double to over 98 million by 2060. In the United States today, 1 in 3 seniors older than 65 live alone and the number of seniors living alone only increases with age. Many of these seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable conditions. Granting a Twilight Wish can help change that! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. Sometimes a wish fulfills an immediate need, and sometimes it is a last wish or lifetime dream. Large or small, all wishes provide a meaningful “thank you” to the senior for a lifetime of service to others. Every wish they grant helps build a culture that values

and respects our senior population. Twilight Wish recipients report that having their wish granted impacted their life for the better. Their mental and physical health often improved, positively changing their outlook on life! The wishes that this organization grants truly changes the way that our society views aging, as it witnesses seniors living life to the fullest. By sharing their recipients’ stories, they inspire both older and younger generations and help bring about a cultural shift in how aging is perceived in our society. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,000 wishes throughout our country, ranging from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. This Foundation has expanded throughout America and they currently have 17 chapters. The majority of their chapter directors and chapter volunteers have full-time jobs, but volunteer their time because they believe so much in the impact Twilight Wish has on our senior population. They are presently looking to expand their outreach to seniors by making our business and community leaders/charitable organizations aware of who they are. AMVETS Post 48 Celebrates 21 Years On July 21 AMVETS Post 48 celebrated its’ 21st Year as a Post as well as the 72nd Anniversary of its’ Congressional Charter to assist Veterans in all aspects of their lives. President Harry Truman signed PL-216 on July 23, 1947 which gave AMVETS its’ Charter. Suffolk County which is largely comprised by the Town of Brookhaven consists of nearly 80,000 Veterans. AMVETS Posts 48, 55, 111, 1998 and 1174 are located within the Town of Brookhaven and have been supportive of Veterans being serviced by the Stony Brook State Veterans Home and the Northport Veterans Medical Center. Furthermore, many AMVETS, Sons, Ladies Auxiliary and AMVETS Riders from the above mentioned posts have assisted the Northport VA run a Stand Down for Homeless Veterans twice during each calendar year.

Proclamations were presented by many of our Elected Officials noting the many achievements attained by AMVETS on the National, State and Local Level. AMVETS Post 48 Commander Harold Chapman thanked all in attendance for their support and vowed to continue AMVETS Post 48’s efforts on behalf of Veterans and their Families. On the National Level there significant concern about the current statistics regarding the 22 Veterans a day throughout the country that commit suicide. The Veterans Administration has a hotline to aid Veterans in need of support and companionship when the need arises by calling 1-800-273-8255. This hotline is available 24 hours per day 7 days a week. With more than a quarter of a million members AMVETS is the

only Veterans Service Organization open to all honorably discharged or currently serving Active, Reserved or National Guard Veterans of all ranks, grades and service branches regardless of whether they served in war or peace. The AMVETS Family also includes Sons of AMVETS, Ladies Auxiliary, AMVETS Riders and Junior AMVETS. Each year AMVETS files about 64,000 claims on behalf of Veterans and surviving family members. AMVET Volunteers have logged over 158,000 hours at VA Facilities Nationwide during the 2015 year and AMVETS has raised more than $350,000 to replace the USS Arizona Memorial Wall and is currently working diligently to help build the Gulf Storm War Memorial which will be located at the end of Constitution Avenue at the National Wall in Washington, DC.

Rocky Point Welcomes 13 The Rocky Point School District welcomed 13 new educators to its schools at a new teacher workshop held before the start of classes in September. The comprehensive introduction to the district and community was an opportunity to meet one another and district administrators, learn about the district’s mission and goals and understand its policies and procedures.

The Port Jefferson School District has named Christine Austen assistant superintendent

for curriculum and instruction. A familiar face to many in the district as the principal of Earl L. Vandermeulen High School since 2015, Austen possesses a strong background in educational leadership, and administrative and supervisory experience. She will officially begin her new role on Sept. 1. “I am pleased that Mrs. Austen will continue the move forward in the enhancement of the district’s curriculum and program development,” Superintendent of Schools

Dr. Paul Casciano said. “This is a natural trajectory for her given the superb supervisory skills, extensive educational background and considerable knowledge of our schools and community she possesses.” Austen was a library media specialist in the Islip School District and the Patchogue-Medford School before joining the staff in Port Jefferson in 1999, where she has worked successfully with educators to integrate new technology and lesson plans into classroom instruction as

well as collaborated with the district’s library renovation committee. She also served as assistant principal, dean of students and technology integration specialist in the district before attaining the principal’s position. Austen has been instrumental in the district’s recent Armed Forces Tribute and Wall of Fame committees and during her professional career has been a member of the Code of Conduct, Extracurricular Code of Conduct, Professional Development and Techn-

Post Educator of the Year and as the 2017 Times Beacon Record Person of the Year, and received a SCOPE Administrative Service Award.

Austen earned advanced graduate certificates in educational leadership and educational computing from Stony Brook University, where she also earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology. She holds a Master of Science in library science from LIU Post. Austen also earned professional certification in school building leadership and school district leadership and has permanent New York State certification as a K-12 library media specialist.
