Long Island Heart Walk More than three thousand Long Islanders are expected to join the Long Island Heart Walk on Sunday, September 22nd, to raise funds to fight heart disease and stroke, America’s No. 1 and No. 4 killers,. The annual event begins at 8:30 a.m. at Jones Beach, Field 5 in Wantagh. The non-competitive, three-mile walk includes teams of employees from local companies, along with friends and family members of all ages. “For every hour of brisk walking, life expectancy may increase for some adults by two hours,” said Mark S. Davis, Managing Partner of Deloitte’s Long Island location and Chairman of the Long Island Heart Walk. “As someone who lost his dad at a young age to heart disease, I am proud to help raise awareness and raise funds that will contribute to the goal of improving

the cardiovascular health of the Long Island community. The American Heart Association is proud to have Elizabeth Hashagen, News12 Morning Show coanchor as this years’ event emcee. Heart Walk participants will experience three “communities” that feature relevant resources and activities. The Victims Information Bureau of Suffolk, also known as VIBS, recently became the recipient of thirty Suffolk County used cell phones and Blackberry devices. Since 1976, VIBS has been an institution that is dedicated to advocating for the victims of domestic violence, rape, and sexual assault.

They are committed to spreading awareness and preventing these crimes from occurring in the future through extensive education. This organization’s very important work made them an ideal candidate to receive the surplus technology from Suffolk County. Hopefully, these devices

will assist VIBS in fulfilling their mission of keeping County residents safe from harm. The technology was accepted by Executive Director of VIBS, Pamela Johnston from Suffolk County Legislator William R. Spencer, M.D., who sponsored the legislation that approved the donation.

Local Teens volunteer lessons each week night and an additional four lessons on the weekends to accommodate all of the equestrian athletes. This heavy load has been managed by a very small army of diligent volunteers, led by one amazing 13year old, who spends a minimum of 21 hours a week helping the athletes. “On September 7th, Saddle Rock’s 62 athletes will travel to HorseAbility in Old Westbury to compete in the regional Special Olympics New York Horse Show. “This event is a huge deal for our athletes and they depend on the volunteers who have helped them train to get through the competition with as little stress as possible,” says Dell’Aira. One challenge these Olympians have to overcome is that they will not be able to bring their lesson horses to the show, so the support of our regular volunteers is even more important. “The program is very challenging to manage,” Dell’Aira commented. “But when our athletes compete and stand on the podium with their medals and ribbons and huge smiles on their faces, it makes every moment of the stress worthwhile.” Saddle Rock Ranch is always looking for volunteers for their community therapeutic riding and Special Olympics New York programs. For the ninth consecutive year, Saddle Rock Ranch, a service of Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE) is serving as a training site for Special Olympics New York Equestrian athletes. Every year this training event is facilitated by PATHcertified instructors and several teenage volunteers. The site received double the amount of annual registrations this year. This has made the support of these local volunteers more critical than ever – and they have risen to meet the challenge. Saddle Rock Ranch has been hosting Special Olympics New York equestrian training since 2005. For the first few years the nearly 16-acre ranch has accommodated 25 – 30 riders in four weekly sessions each season. “This year our registration exploded,” explained Julie Dell’Aira, Therapeutic Riding Program Coordinator. “We had 65 registrants and added ten sessions to our typical schedule. Since training takes place in the summer when many families are vacationing, we are really struggling to get enough volunteers every night.” A typical practice session includes four special needs riders, one certified instructor and anywhere from four to 12 support volunteers. The ranch hosts two to three

Angela’s House, a local non-profit that assists families caring for medically fragile children is celebrated the opening of its third Home in Stony Brook. Graciously assisting with the Fishing Fundraiser was Captain Chris from the charter boat “Fishtale” sailing out of Captree State Park in Babylon, on July 30th. They filled three boats with close to 200 people. It was a beautiful day allowing the guests of Angela’s House to catch lots of fish, have a great time with family and friends and to support Angela’s House on a

Dose Of Nostalgia By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I haven’t watched the MTV Video Music Awards since … oh, probably around the time *NSYNC was still a certified group. So when word leaked out that they would be reuniting at this year’s ceremony in honor of Justin Timberlake receiving the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, well, you can imagine the hysteria which erupted among their longtime fans. In the days leading up to the big broadcast, you couldn’t escape the rumor mill – on TV, radio,

newspapers and especially social media – all buzzing with the possibility of a few moments of nostalgia. Twenty and thirtysomethings were instantly transported back to their glory days – back when music was more about the melody than what the artist was (or wasn’t, as the case may be) wearing, the staging, the choreography and all that nonsense. Sure, *NSYNC may not be every musical connoisseur’s idea of a deep, meaningful musical experience – but considering some of what is out there on the charts

today, it’s certainly done a decent job of standing the test of time. And so we tuned in. And we waited. We were shocked by the spectacle of Lady Gaga, disgusted by the antics of Miley Cyrus, and generally perplexed by the direction music has gone in the last ten years. It was quite the hour to endure, to say the least. But then, at long last, there it was. 110 seconds of pure joy. Surrounded by about two hours of, well, the sort of indescribable train wreck that the MTV VMA’s has become. A brief reunion. But well worth the wait.

Rain Garden Opens

Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine recently joined Councilwoman Jane Bonner for the opening of the new rain garden at the Mt. Sinai Harbor Stewardship Center at Cedar Beach. The garden utilizes rain barrels to collect runoff from the nature center, and disperses it into the garden, where it is naturally filtered through the soil. The Mt. Sinai Harbor Marine Stewardship Center at Cedar Beach is located at the former home

of the Mt. Sinai Nature Center. The new center, which was championed by Councilwoman Bonner after the original center was slated for demolition, houses marine-based displays and provides marine stewardship learning opportunities for residents, schools and private organizations. Among the environmental issues that the center focuses on are plastic pollution, habitat conservation, storm water runoff and best management

practices for homes. The center complements environmental programs offered at the Town’s West Meadow Beach in Stony Brook. Supervisor Romaine has long been an advocate for rain gardens and because of their benefits to the environment, was instrumental in the construction of the first Suffolk County rain garden located in the Cornell Cooperative Extension parking lot in Riverhead.

It is a show geared toward children featuring entertainment and education, titled, Country Kids! Country Kids!, currently being performed on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays at 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., features music, sing-alongs, interactive play, and fun with the show’s creator, Miss Jen. Country Kids! Takes place at the Country Kids Cottage located within the Harbes Family Farm Barnyard Adventure. magical toy animal friends. Country Kids! gives children the chance to meet live animals, learn where fruit and produce come from, sing, and dance. Gershow Recycling sponsored and donated $2,000 to help defray the costs of putting on the 5th Annual Play for Peace/Jugando Por La Paz Soccer Tournament, which was held August 10th at the Patchogue-Medford Youth Soccer Complex in Medford. Approximately 500 spectators came to this free event. Twelve teams — eight men’s teams and four women’s teams — participated in the tournament. In the men’s division, PBA was the Division 1 Winner. PMCT (also known as the North Bellport Athletic Association Blasters) won

Division 2, then went on to defeat PBA in the championship match. The winner in the Women’s Division went to Port Jeff Sporting Goods. The goals of Play For Peace were to bring together diverse nationalities within the community for a full day of World Cup-style soccer and to use sports as a way for people from different ethnic backgrounds to find common ground. This year’s tournament was organized by the office of Suffolk County Legislator Robert Calarco. “Gershow Recycling is pleased again to support this year’s ‘Play for Peace.’

ALS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, attacks the nerve cells that control voluntary muscles, including those used for swallowing and breathing, causing weakness and eventually total paralysis. On Tuesday, August 20th, thousands of local residents flocked to St. Anthony’s Church in Rocky Point to see Big Shot, the Ultimate Billy Joel Tribute Band. Audience members of all ages enjoyed hits such as Piano Man, My Life and Scenes from an Italian Restaurant. Legislator Anker recognized lead singer Mike DelGuidice for his community activism, participating in benefits for Superstorm Sandy relief,

autism, and cancer. “Music has the amazing ability to unify people of all different ages and backgrounds,” said Legislator Anker. “I’m grateful to work with the Rocky Point VFW and Mike DelGuidice and his band, who are ‘instrumental’ in in bringing the community together.” The final performance of the Summer Concert Series will take place at St. Anthony’s Church on Tuesday, August 27th at

7pm. Due to inclement weather on earlier dates, Strawberry Fields and Street Fighter will both perform for a night of 60s and 70s classics made famous by the Beatles and Rolling Stones. Summer Concert Fun On August 10th, Long Island Game Farm hosted a dog adoption event for Brookhaven Animal Shelter. The hundreds of families who came to the Game Farm that day had the opportunity to visit these animals waiting to be adopted. In addition, there were raffles sold and sponsored by Second Loves, a notfor-profit organization that offers unwanted, abused, neglected and homeless animals of all species a second chance at having a healthy, happy and loving home by attempting to find them forever homes. All proceeds went directly to Second Loves for the care

of Brookhaven Shelter’s animals. Among the dogs available for adoption were Bryan, a deaf adult male mixed-breed terrier; Ringo, a male adult terrier mix who was later adopted; Tristan, an adult male mixed breed; and Precious, an adult female mixed breed. Bryan is in foster care and looking for a permanent home. Tristan and Precious are currently being boarded at Hounds Town in Ronkonkoma also awaiting adoption. Some of the money raised went to pay for the animals’ boarding fees. Anyone who is interested in adopting

any of these dogs must come to the Brookhaven Animal Shelter, located at 300 Horseblock Road in Brookhaven. All adoption fees will be waived by the shelter until September 20th. Veteran Honored On August 24th, 2013, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker joined the Rocky Point VFW and Brookhaven Town officials at a road renaming ceremony honoring courageous World War II veteran Frank Celentano. The ceremony took place at the corner of Begonia Road and King Road in Rocky Point, across from the Celentano family home, as local officials unveiled Frank’s name on a red, white, and blue street sign. Stationed in the Pacific during the Second World War, Frank Celentano lost

his hand when an enemy grenade landed in the trench where he and his fellow Marines were hiding. In an effort to protect his comrades, Celentano fearlessly hurled the grenade from the trench, sacrificing his hand. “As Vice Chair of the Veterans and Seniors Committee, I’m honored to be a part of remembering such an important member of the Rocky Point community,” said Legislator Anker. “Mr. Celentano’s heroic story reminds us how fortunate we are to have the brave

men and women of the armed forces protecting our freedom.” After the war, Celentano moved to Rocky Point, where he raised nine children. Frank Celentano passed away on June 12th, 2012, leaving behind a legacy of 32 grandchildren and a community that remembers him as both a war hero and very kind man.
