Summer’s Swan Song And there it is. Not two days into September, and the autumn zealots are out in force, proclaiming the “end” of summer to be upon us. Never mind the fact that the calendar still calls for a full three weeks of the season. Nope. Pack away the bathing suits, close up the pools, pay no mind to the warm radiance of the sun. Fall has arrived. Clearly, I’m not thrilled by this rush to transition. While I can appreciate the glory of autumn in all its splendor, I’m pretty sure that I recall there being many who spent the better part of last winter counting down the days to summer. What happened? Had

your fill of beautiful beach days? Grown tired of sunlit evenings and family barbecues in the backyard? I can understand the school year dictating some sort of routine for those still beholden to a bell schedule; but for the rest of us, there is simply no excuse to not savor these remaining weeks. “Summer vacation” may be over, but for those of us who haven’t been fortunate to take advantage of it, this is the prime time for long weekends and late afternoons spent soaking in the last rays of sunshine at the beach. The best part? While everyone else is off returning to his/her regularly scheduled

programs, the rest of us are left to enjoy the solitude. Not a bad tradeoff. If there is anything we have learned in recent years, it is that Mother Nature has infinitely more impact on our lives than the calendar year. We have had hurricanes at Halloween, snow for Thanksgiving and 70º days leading up to Christmas. You never can tell. But, in this case, the calendar says summer and the weather concurs. Savor it. Grab your bathing suit, pick up a few hot dogs and kick back in a lounge chair. Autumn will wait. In fact, I’m pretty sure it hasn’t even arrived yet.

Museum educators will lead a comprehensive tour through this exhibition that highlights the palaces and properties of diverse styles representing the country’s best achievements in architecture, interior decorating and landscape design. Gilding the Coasts emphasizes artistic production, in both the significant, path-breaking work that was done on estates by a wide array of artisans, and in the art that was commissioned and inspired by the great estate movement itself. From their conception to their meticulous design, construction, and eventual daily use, these were fascinating working laboratories that facilitated the extensions of their owners’ innovative artistic legacies. Alive@Five will continue through the end of the year with lectures, workshops and guided tours of additional exhibitions. Admission is $15 per person or $10 for museum members and includes refreshments.

Apple Baking Contest The humble apple will be the focus of the largest Apple Pie Baking Contest on Long Island to be held in conjunction with the 26th Annual Long Island Apple Festival on Sunday, September 20th. Participants get a chance to show off their favorite family recipes and participate in an oldfashioned blue ribbon competition. Entries must be traditional apple pies only, homemade by amateur bakers. Early registration is preferred, before Thursday, September 17th, but registrations will also be accepted on the day of the festival. The Long Island Museum in Stony Brook will open its doors free of charge on Saturday, September 26th, as part of Smithsonian magazine’s 11th annual Museum Day Live! On this day only, participating museums across the United State emulate the spirit of the Smithsonian Institution’s Washington DC-based facilities, which offer free admission every day, and open their doors for free to those who download a Museum Day Live! ticket. Inclusive by design, the event represents Smithsonian’s commitment to make learning and the spread of knowledge accessible to everyone. Last year’s event drew over 400,000 participants, and this year’s event is expected to attract more museumgoers than ever before.

grade. He worked diligently with Father Robert Smith of Saint James Church to design a prayer garden. With the help of volunteers, donations, and funds raised, and after more than 150 hours of labor, the garden was completed. The finished garden is landscaped with shrubbery and flowers and is surrounded by a

four foot tall decorative fence. Those who visit the garden can walk along the new brick pathway or sit quietly on one of the two stone benches installed as part of Michael’s project. One can also appreciate the sculpture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus while enjoying the atmosphere of the prayer garden.

Pilot Garden Planting Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker, in cooperation with the nonprofit Mount Sinai Heritage Trust and with dozens of volunteers, planted the native plant pollinator garden at the North Shore Heritage Park in Mount Sinai on Tuesday, August 25th. The garden, a pilot program and part of the Educational Agriculture Support Initiative (EASI), includes a variety of native pollinator plants, which demonstrate the aesthetic diversity of Long Island plants while providing a habitat for pollinators. After Legislator Anker was made aware that 90% of the Monarch Butterfly population has been decimated, and that our local farmers are importing bees to pollinate their farms, she created the EASI program through legislation that was unanimously supported by the county. The legislation she sponsored created a partnership with the Mount Sinai Heritage Trust to place an educational native pollinator garden at the Heritage Park. “Monarch butterflies and pollinators are like canaries in the coal mines; once we lose them we lose our agricultural and environmental sustainability. The garden will help to educate the community about native plant species and the necessity of pollinators,” said Legislator Anker. “I would like to thank Mount Sinai Heritage Trust for providing the space for the pilot program and I hope that after visiting the garden residents will be encouraged to create their own.” Visitors of the park will be able to utilize the garden as a learning tool. One of the main objectives of the EASI program is to provide native plant educational materials to Suffolk County residents. “The pilot garden is a great example of another

educational feature here at the Heritage Park,” said Lori Baldassare, President of the Mount Sinai Heritage Trust. “We hope that local residents will utilize the garden as way to learn about our local farming legacy.” The garden was designed by Suffolk County Soil and Water Conservation District with plants donated by the Long Island Native Plant Initiative (LINPI). LINPI is an all-volunteer cooperative effort to preserve the genetic

heritage of Long Island’s native plant population. The Soil and Water Conservation District works to conserve soil and water resources, assist in the drainage and irrigation of agricultural lands, preserve wildlife and protect public land. “The pollinator garden will highlight our beautiful blooms and showiest native plant species and the

pollinators that the floral bouquet attracts,” said Polly Weigand, Senior Soil District Technician of Suffolk County Soil and Water Conservation District. “Creating pollinator habitat in your yard, garden or in a larger landscape simply begins with the establishment of one native plant. We hope that visiting the garden will serve as inspiration to homeowners to create similar habitats, one native plant at a time.” On the day of the event, Legislator Anker was joined by volunteers, including members of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County, Pat Loliscio of Pat’s Complete Landscaping, the Mount Sinai Garden Club, Girl Scout Troop 3017, Girl Scout Troop 227, Girl Scout Troop 1234, and the Little Scientists. Some of the native species planted were flowery plants that provide nectar and pollen; others, such as grasses, provide nesting habitat. Volunteers also listened to a presentation by Legislator Anker and Ms. Weigand about invasive species, native plants, and the necessity of pollinators. Guests were provided with educational pamphlets and posters, as well as a native plant to start their own garden. “Suffolk County has close to 50,000 acres of open space and thousands of acres of government property. I look forward to working with the county to encourage the use of native Long Island plants in our landscaping,” said Legislator Anker. “We must do everything in our power to preserve our native pollinators including the beautiful Monarch Butterfly, and in doing so we will support our local farming community as well as preserve the natural environmental landscape.”

One thing that has definitely puzzled my head is why the school year can seem to be so cyclic. It reaches the point where I am occasionally sickened by it. How does one make each day exciting? How can one feel motivated enough to awaken from bed and aspire? “Aspire to do what?” you might ask. Aspire to distinguish this day from others and consider it memorable. This will undoubtedly break that cycle and in fact inscribe a new tale into the course of one’s life. Distinction is key. Distinction is golden. If you need to ask how you can perform such a task, I will happily recommend what to do. These have certainly assisted me in differentiating one day from others. Firstly, be open to listening to others. If you shut out yourself from the rest of the world, you’ll feel confined and limited. If someone comes up to you and asks if you want to hang out with them - take that invitation. And if you are stuck on something and offered help, accept that person’s advice and see. Just see! Who knows? You might just bridge the gap between the first part and the second part.

The second part is to make more friends. You know, amigos, companions, even acquaintances. Call them whatever you’d like, as long as it’s appropriate. Just obtain a few. Also, be sure that they are true friends. By “true,” I mean that they are spending time with you because they are fond of you as a person. If they are with you only because they envy you for some of your possessions, then they are not true friends. Following the first two parts will lead one to the third and final part, which is to make light. Express levity whenever and wherever you can. Make jokes at the appropriate instances. This is helpful because one is always going to withstand pessimistic days and experience exuberant days. See? These three steps can aid in making school days and any day more excitingly different. If this has motivated you to take action and get on top of the cycle, give yourself small applause and two big thumbs up! Now, this all may sound well and good; however, only you can make it happen! So get up, vow to alter the chain of events for your greater benefit, and distinguish!
