It all began back in elementary school; earlier, even. The clipping in the local South Bay Newspaper heralding the entrance of the Class of 2000...into kindergarten. I was a part of that storied graduating class, and as we progressed through the next dozen or so years of schooling, the various accolades of my fellow Lindy alums would be documented within the pages of our neighborhood paper. My own graduation announcement was featured there, as I moved on from the halls of Lindy High and began my studies in journalism on the opposite shore at the C.W. Post campus of Long Island University. Four years later, it was time to take a stab at a career in the real world and, upon the encouragement of my mom, I sent a random query to the newly minted South Bay’s Neighbor, thinking it might be an ideal place to gain my footing in the field. As luck would have it, the paper was in the process of a major overhaul, transitioning from its rather antiquated black and white format and beginning the arduous task
of streamlining what had been, to that point, an extremely laborintensive, manual ordeal week after week. I entered the picture as an editorial assistant, designated as the one to cull through the incoming e-mails and process the local community news submitted by readers. Photos, press releases, upcoming events whatever seemed newsworthy was prepared, along with a selection of handwritten articles penned by our original editor, Lillian Nolin, still a fixture at the old Lindenhurst office. As I worked from my desk in Farmingdale, monitoring the weekly content, I was fortunate to be surrounded by a staff that took me under its collective wing, teaching me the ins and outs of editing, formatting and even a little graphic design. Fast forward three or so years, and the 11 original editions had morphed into 43. Lillian had retired, leaving me as the “veteran” editor, now responsible for penning my own weekly column, serving as a “roving reporter” of sorts covering select community events, taking photographs, and coming up with my own concepts for new features.
At all of 25 years-old, I was entrusted with the responsibility of driving this product to the next level editorially - and I loved every second of it. Over the next decade {wow, a whole decade}, the structure of South Bay’s Neighbor progressed and transformed, as did the staff, the content and the design. In the winter of 2014, we added a magazine to the mix, introducing Seasons, our high-end glossy feature, publishing five times a year. Always evolving, this was yet another opportunity to be a part of a product from the ground up, and to showcase our creativity in a new format for an even wider audience. What began as a first step into the field of journalism turned into a large portion of my career, a solid foundation from which to build upon and grow. I have often said that, although my 13-year tenure here has been, technically, one job, it has felt like several all rolled into one. In many ways, the evolution has come full circle - from the local clipping back in 1987, to now, as I pen my second-to-last column for the old hometown South Bay...a Lindy girl at heart, always.

Added 16-year-old Natalie Puello, Petty Officer Second Class with the Theodore Roosevelt Division, “I’m excited to learn about tackling the waves and wind far out in the ocean with all of us working together as a team of one. If the weather gets tough, I’m sure it will bring out the best in us to each pull our weight while supporting one another.” When asked if she was at all afraid, Puello wasted no hesitation in replying, “No.” The Journey The voyage began with the Nada sailing from Mt. Sinai, heading east past Orient Point into the Atlantic, beyond the sight of land. The crew will sail the Nada along the continental shelf, staying south of the Nantucket shipping lanes until the vessel will sail close to the famous
Georges Bank fishing grounds. There, the girls will turn the sailboat north into the Gulf of Maine, continuing up to Portland, Maine. By that time, the teenagers will not have seen land for five days and likely have encountered rough seas. They will have practiced man-overboard drills, learned to detect minor engine troubles, and navigate by the stars. As a reward for mastering the journey up to that point, the Nada will drop anchor so all can enjoy a well-deserved lobster dinner on Great Diamond Island, an area rich with wildlife including bald eagles, humpback whales, dolphins, seals and turtles.
Dockside Family Festival The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that the annual Dockside Family Festival will take place on Saturday, September 8th and Sunday, September 9th at Captree State Park in Babylon from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This festival offers fun for the entire family! Adults can enjoy live music as well as a variety of merchandise and food vendors. Activities for children include our famous crab races, boat rides (children must be accompanied by an adult), interactive pirate shows, pony rides, magic shows,

From there, the girls will navigate south for 24 hours, reaching the Coast Guard station in Provincetown, MA, which will host the Nada to allow the cadets a day’s shore leave. Next, the newly seasoned sailors will traverse the Cape Cod Canal and enter Buzzards Bay, which is notorious for nasty sea conditions of short waves kicked up by strong currents and powerful, channeled winds. Continuing on into ocean water conditions in Rhode Island Sound, they will later stop at Block Island to wait for the right tide to run “the race” between Orient Point and Fishers Island and into their home stretch into Long Island Sound. Planning and timing is critical in this area, and it will require all the navigation skills the young crew will have learned thus far. If all goes well with fair winds, the Sea Cadet crew will return to Mount Sinai 10 days after having started, on or around Tuesday, August 28th. “Cadets might not even have a learner’s permit to drive, but they will learn to navigate a sailboat in challenging waters and will gain a newfound respect for the sea,” added LT Robert Garceau, Executive Officer of the Theodore Roosevelt Division. Garceau noted that this is advanced training, and all of the cadets on the journey have passed rigorous leadership and technical training courses and physical fitness regimens leading up to this seamanship journey. In addition to training such as this journey, Sea Cadet training is also integrated into local communities such as with the cadets serving as Color Guard formations leading parades, sending off WWII veterans on Honor Flights, or performing general community service. The Naval Sea Cadet Corps was founded by the Naval League of the United States in 1958 at the request of the Department of the Navy. The Theodore Roosevelt Division is named in honor of the 26th president of the United States who was a Long Island resident, Medal of Honor recipient, and had a rich naval history including serving as Assistant Secretary of the Navy.

For the last three years, teenage U.S. Naval Sea Cadets set sail from near Port Jefferson on an 800-mile journey aimed at teaching them about the rigors of seamanship and leadership. Given tightquarters on the historic “Nada,” an Ingrid 38-foot sailboat, it was a male-only journey. That didn’t sit quite right with a number of aspiring female sailors. So this year on Saturday, August 18, an all-female crew of six teenage girls set out to prove that they’ve got every bit the mettle of previous male crews. The crew, ages 14 to 16, are all part of the Naval Sea Cadet Corps, the U.S. Navy’syouth organization that inspires leadership development, commitment and good citizenship. The Sea Cadets also learn about courage, which the teenage girls may need as they lose sight of land and tackle deep waters off the continental shelf, where depths drop from 250 feet to 7,200 feet, and 15-foot waves can whip up at a moment’s notice. The cadets have a seasoned captain at the helm along with two Naval Sea Cadet officers, but it is sure to be the journey of a lifetime for these courageous six girls. Of the six girls, two hail from the Sea Cadets’ Theodore Roosevelt Division, which trains out of the U.S Coast Guard station in East Moriches. One is from the Lt. Michael Murphy Division in Patchogue (a division named after that Medal of Honor recipient), and two more are members of a division in Northport. The remaining young woman is traveling from a North Carolina division for this incredible learning opportunity. Sailing will be 24 hours a day in rotating watches of four hours during the day and three hours during the night. Cadets typically lose their sense of day and night, knowing only light and dark on a voyage such as this. “The girls will learn that out at sea you really need to depend on one another,” said Captain Roger Noakes. “The saying is ‘We take care of each other, so we can take care of the ship, so the ship can take care of us.’ It will be a life-changing experience, and they will come back different young women from when they left.”

Piping Plover Program Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced that the County’s 2018 Piping Plover Conservation Program has resulted in a record number of successful piping plover pairs and fledges this summer while retaining recreational opportunities for outer beach enthusiasts at Smith Point County Park. In prior years, a vast majority of the outer beach area at Smith Point County Park was closed for public access to protect the plover breeding grounds. Realizing the importance of enhancing public access to the popular outer beach, the Department of Parks and Recreation updated its Endangered Species Protection Program with the goal of complying with federal conservation laws while fostering greater public access to the outer beach. “Through careful planning and enhanced monitoring of the federally-protected plover, we were able to strike a balance to protect the plover while enhancing access to the outer beach for our four-wheel drive enthusiasts,” said County Executive Steve Bellone. “I would like to commend all those involved in the protection efforts and also the general public for their cooperation and understanding.” When first launched in 1997, the Endangered Species Protection Program resulted in 32 pairs of plovers producing 28 fledges. This year’s numbers produced 62 pairs with 100 fledges, the highest number of fledges in the program’s history. Now that the fledglings are grown, the outer beach has been returned to full access to the public and four-wheel drive beach vehicle enthusiasts. Three Eagles Honored
At an Eagle Scout Court of Honor in Setauket, not one, but three young men were awarded the distinguished rank. On Sunday, August 12th, 2018, Councilwoman Cartright sent congratulations and provided Town Proclamations to each of the three young men recognizing their accomplishments. Matthew Seyfert, Cole Palmer and Harry Merzinare are all from Boy Scout Troop 70. To become an Eagle Scout, a boy must first work his way through
The Port Jefferson School District received an audit report from the Office of the New York State Comptroller’s Division of Local Government and School Accountability that lauded its continued commitment to fiscal responsibility. The goal of the audit is to provide objective analysis to assist those governing and overseeing payment performance and operations and initiate corrective actions if needed. The audit reviewed dozens of both general fund and extra-classroom activity claims totaling more than $300,000 and found that the district’s voucher system has been properly established and implemented by the Board

thorough review and adequate procedures and segregation of duties were properly executed. “The examination reviews all district processes and then thoroughly focuses on one particular area for detail testing,” Deputy Superintendent Sean Leister said. “Given that there were no negative findings indicates the district’s claims process has an overall welldesigned system. As our district places a strong emphasis on ensuring tax dollars are spent effectively and efficiently, we are pleased with the outcome of this auditing process, as it reinforces from an external perspective.”

Transformative Journey Growing up in Brentwood, Leslie Peralta saw that her community had many health and wellness needs. This thought, combined with her interest in science pushed her to study health sciences. She attended Johns Hopkins University and majored in biology, then followed that with a Master’s in Biomedical Sciences at Rutgers University and a stint teaching science to high schoolers in New Jersey. Her goals grew and she pursued medical school. Now Leslie is among the 136 students at Stony Brook University School of Medicine making up the 2018 incoming class. The students, their families and Stony Brook faculty celebrated and officially launched the students’ medical school journey at Stony Brook University’s traditional White Coat Ceremony. The 21s t annual event was held on August 12th at the Student Activities Center. Leslie and all of her classmates are on a transformative journey. In a profession built on saving lives, the journey begins with rigorous training about the human body, training in clinical skills and understanding how to think and communicate like a physician, and learning how to implement new technologies into patient care. “Your futures will be filled with many firsts – your first patient, your first diagnosis, your first clinical success, your first patient death,” said Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, MACP, Senior Vice President for the Health Sciences and Dean of the School of Medicine. “Medicine is a challenging, rewarding profession that will transform your life and the lives of your patients. Your white coat is a symbol of professionalism, scientific excellence and compassionate care. Wear it well while at Stony Brook
and in your future lives as physicians.” The class is a diverse and talented group with many interests in medicine. Sixty percent are residents of New York State and 40 percent hail from 16 other states or from around the world. They represent 70 undergraduate schools, have a collective grade point average of 3.80 and an average national MCAT score in the 90th percentile. Only 9 percent of the total 2018 applicants were accepted into Stony Brook. Among some of the other students are: Alex Baez,
a native of Colorado who came to Stony Brook as an undergraduate and was inspired to choose medicine as he took part in the Stony Brook ambulance volunteer corps on campus. He has an interest in the neurosciences and patient care. Alex is among the students enrolled in Stony Brook’s MD/PhD program. Lara Ambrosi, who has been an international citizen as her father works for the United Nations, hopes to become an oncologist but is open to other areas of medicine. She has a goal
to be a physician-scientist within some specialty. Simon Nin Riccardi Zhu studied philosophy and economics as an undergraduate. Inspired by his mother, a physician, Simon is considering psychiatry but also has interest in the expanding arena of global health. Leslie Peralta is not sure what specialty she will choose, thought she favors OB/GYN. She is thrilled to be back in her home zone and has a goal after graduation to be a physician focusing on the many health and preventive medicine needs of her Brentwood community, or a similar community somewhere in the country. Jack Fuhrer, MD, Associate Dean for Admissions, and Latha Chandran, MD, MPH, Vice Dean, Academic and Faculty Affairs, jointly announced and presented each student with a physician-intraining white coat. Dean Kaushansky administered the Hippocratic Oath, which the students recited for the first time – another symbolic entry into medicine. Ramon Parsons, MD/PhD, Class of 1992, was presented with the 2018 Distinguished Alumnus Award and honored for his distinguished career as a cancer researcher. He is the Director of the Tisch Cancer Institute at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Lauren Ferrante, MD, Class of 2007 was presented with the Outstanding Recent Graduate Award. Dr. Ferrante, Assistant Professor of Pulmonology and Critical Care Medicine at Yale School of Medicine, is a recognized leader in clinical outcomes research at the interface of critical care medicine and geriatrics.

The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA), together with the Town of Babylon, will be hosting an “Alzheimer’s Walk in the Park” on Saturday, October 13th, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (rain date October 14th). The event will take place at the AFA-Town of Babylon Respite Care Relief Park (200 East Sunrise Highway, Lindenhurst), which serves residents with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers. Proceeds raised from the event will support the Respite Care Relief Park. Individuals of all ages are invited to take part in the walk to raise Alzheimer’s awareness and support local families affected by Alzheimer’s disease. The family-friendly event will also feature health and wellness activities, music, entertainment, children’s activities and refreshments. Free, confidential memory and hearing screenings will also be offered.
