departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions. The Social Brain would like to thank all who came out to the Basket Night Fundraiser on Friday, August 16th. They raised $2,600 and received another $900 in corporate donations! Additionally, they just wrapped up their East End 4-Week Social Skills Sessions. These were successful and helped children and young adults from Patchogue to as far east as Sag Harbor. They completed fun projects and encouraged a team approach to complete each week’s classes. They would like to give a special thanks to Peconic Speech Services of Riverhead for collaborating with their organization to host these classes. Keep your eye out for another set of classes coming during this upcoming school year. If you or someone you know is interested in learning more about or becoming involved with this organization, please contact them today.

The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology

When New York State communities were ranked by the number of pedestrian crashes that occurred between 2009 and 2013, Long Island communities accounted for eight of the top twenty communities ranked, and Hempstead had the highest number of crashes of all communities in upstate New York and Long Island. Other ranked communities included Brookhaven (number 7), Islip (number 8), Oyster Bay (number 9), N. Hempstead (number 10), Babylon (number 11), Huntington (number 14), and Freeport (number 19).

For this scholarship contest, students simply need to create a short video that illustrates one or more of the Vehicle and Traffic Laws for Pedestrian Enforcement. The intent of the competition is to encourage more widespread understanding about various pedestrian/ traffic safety laws. The competition is part of the Walk Safe Long Island campaign organized by the Long Island Health Collaborative in partnership with the Coalition and health and safety educators from across Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Brain Aneurysm Awareness Walk Returns At Jones Beach State Park Hundreds of walkers, from brain aneurysm survivors to their families and supporters, are expected to attend Long Island’s 11th annual Brain Aneurysm Awareness Walk at Jones Beach State Park on Saturday, September 21. The fun-filled event, which includes a fourmile run and two-mile walk, is hosted by the Brain Aneurysm Center at Northwell Health’s Institute for Neurology and Neurosurgery, along with the Brain Aneurysm Foundation (BAF). Proceeds will benefit both organizations, raising funds to support essential research. “Thanks to hundreds of participants, we have raised $700,000 since the walk’s inception and it continues to grow steadily each year,” said David Chalif, MD, director of Northwell Health’s Brain Aneurysm Center. “It is a time for brain aneurysm survivors and their families to celebrate life and also a time to remember those who have lost a loved one to a brain aneurysm.” At this year’s walk, one of the guest speakers will

be Greg McGeady, 34, of Clifton Park, NY, who lost his older brother to a ruptured brain aneurysm last year. Other guest speakers will include two brain aneurysm survivors: Luisina Alonzo, 22, of Bellerose and Cynthia Mathis, 40, of New Hyde Park. One of the goals of this annual event is to increase awareness about the warning signs of a brain aneurysm. The symptoms can include severe headache, nausea, blurred or double vision, stiff neck or neck pain, pain above or behind the eye and loss of sensation. Registration for the walk begins at 8:30 a.m. at Jones Beach State Park, Field 5, 1000 Ocean Parkway, Wantagh. The start time is 10 a.m. and the event will be held rain or shine. The fee is $25 through September 9; $30 afterward. Entry fee includes the cost of parking and snacks. T-shirts will be handed out on a firstcome, first-serve basis. The Rocky Point High School Class of 2019 began the next stage of their lives, as they officially celebrated their successes. In his final address to the graduates before retiring, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michael Ring said, “Now is the time to step up and step out. Do the things you felt insecure doing in the past, and get out of your comfort zone, for if you spend your life inside your comfort zone, you

will miss so very much. Outside of your comfort zone is where you will be more likely to attempt to achieve things you are certain you cannot.” Valedictorian Bryant Liu, salutatorian Joshua Vogel and exhortation speaker Michael Gunning each had an opportunity to address their peers, sharing words of remembrance from their time spent in Rocky Point, as well as encouragement for the graduates’ new

journey ahead. A number of awards and scholarships were presented to members of the senior class before Rocky Point High School Principal Susann Crossan officially presented the candidates for graduation to all those in attendance. The district extends its best wishes to the graduating seniors and wishes them much success in the years ahead.
