he Ward Melville Heritage Organization’s Ernst Marine Conservation Center (EMCC) at West Meadow Creek recently reopened with a special reception and ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the new and refurbished facility after it was badly damaged by Hurricane Sandy. The event brought together a diverse group of donors who contributed to the EMCC fundraising campaign. Thanks to all who turned out.

On Saturday, September 14th, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Strong Island Derby Revolution, a Suffolkbased all-female roller derby team, is inviting those interested in joining this unique American sport to participate in a free bootcamp, which will focus on basic skills, hitting and blocking drills, as well as proper skating form. The bootcamp, which will be held at World Gym, located at 384 Mark Tree Rd. in East Setauket, will also give prospective new members a chance to meet league members and find out more about the sport. Requirements for a

new skater include being at least 21 years of age or older and coming to the event with a pair of quad skates, knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, mouth guard and helmet. There is also a limited supply of loaner equipment available on a first come first serve basis. Strong Island Derby Revolution formed in the spring of 2011 and currently boasts almost 50 league members, including skaters, referees, non-skating officials and coaches. In recent years, there has been a tremendous growth in roller derby around the

world. The sport’s first World Cup was held in Toronto in December of 2011. All teams are DIY organizations with the skaters not only training hard on the track but also running the business side, doing everything from securing venues to selling tickets and designing merchandise. The next home bout for Strong Island Derby Revolution is on Saturday, September 28th at 8 p.m. at World Gym in East Setauket. struck. By this point, it had been on land for close to ten minutes and it was not moving. Lifeguards sprinted over and we tried to drag it into the water, but it did not budge. When the police finally arrived, they came in great numbers. Not much happens on Fire Island, so something this unique surely attracted attention. This one big, angry policeman proceeded to tie a rope to the back of his decked-out Suburban, and to the tail of the now deceased animal. He put it in drive and gunned it, but got stuck in the sand. Then, a police boat showed up. It really couldn’t help at all due to the dolphin being on land! A second police cruiser came and dragged the first out of the sand. They

pulled the dolphin down the beach about ¼ mile and just left it to bake in the sun. The whole ride, it was bouncing along the sand. I’m sure they came back for it, because a few hours later, it was gone. It was a truly inhumane way to treat an animal. Even a dead fish shouldn’t be treated the way that this dolphin was treated. They showed no respect for the animal. It is a shame that this is the way the animal had to go. It was exciting for the beach goers, but also a saddening moment for many of the Fire Island locals who enjoy watching the dolphins go by in the water every once in a while. For us, it is simply one less beautiful creature that continues to play off the shore of our little island.

About a week ago, my father and I were relaxing on the beach in front of my house. What started out as a seemingly normal day abruptly shifted into a frantic morning. The plot twist occurred when all of a sudden a dying dolphin washed up onto the beach. From a distance, it looked like a child’s inflatable toy. Its tail stuck up at a weird angle. As we moved closer, we saw what resembled a huge bite mark on its back. Flocks of people were surrounding the mammal and obstructing our view. As one of the locals, I was there before the police. This meant that I got to see it up close. The seemingly brutal bite mark on its back was simply two gashes where a boat’s propellor had

Grant Received The Early Years Institute (EYI) has received a $20,000 grant from the Long Island Unitarian Universalist Fund at Long Island Community Foundation to address educational inequities for young children. Based on research, when underserved children are not given equal opportunities to learn and grow, they start behind their peers in Kindergarten and they often stay behind. Some of the root causes of the inequities stem from a lack of literacy and language access, representation in the decision-making process and affordable housing. This grant will enable EYI to continue its work in Westbury by facilitating systemic social change that engages the whole community in supporting children so they succeed in school. EYI will continue to utilize the data from the Early Development Instrument (EDI) – a school readiness

Stony Brook University cut the ribbon of Frey Hall, commemorating the opening of the first building dedicated solely to classroom space on the Long Island campus. Stony Brook President Dr. Samuel L. Stanley Jr. was joined by Dr. Robert Frey and his wife Kathryn, academic leadership, faculty and staff from across the University, and elected officials including Sen. John Flanagan and Assemblyman Steve Englebright, to celebrate the $31M, 95,000 square-foot renovation project that began in March 2011. The project, designed by architectural firm EwingCole to meet the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Silver Certification, converted one of the oldest buildings on the campus known as “Old Chemistry” (construction for which began in 1962) into a modern new teaching facility with 1,971 seats (including three new 250 seat lecture halls), 27 new classrooms and creative new teaching space, which, combined, will host nearly 240 courses this fall. Named to honor Dr. Robert Frey and the Frey Family Foundation in grateful recognition of their 35-year commitment to Stony Brook University, the new classroom building incorporates several signature teaching and learning with technology (TLT) features, including an “Active Learning Center” and a “Testing Center.” The Active Learning Center is a 180-seat classroom space organized around tables of six in which an instructor and teaching assistants lead the students through cooperative learning, problembased learning and team- problem solving exercises in a media intense environment. The Testing Center is a relatively new concept in higher education, slated to

come online in spring 2013, in which space is dedicated solely to electronic testing and features special facility accommodations for eligible students such as those who are hearing or sight impaired. “Robert’s connection to and investment in Stony Brook runs deep and personal,” said Dr. Stanley. “It includes almost every role imaginable, from teaching and research to philanthropy and indeed, bricks and mortar, having accomplished something no other who came before him was able to do – he built a 135-room Hilton Garden Inn on campus. I cannot emphasize enough how important – how significant – his contributions to the campus community have been.” After securing his bachelor’s in Applied Mathematics and Statistics from Stony Brook in 1980, Dr. Frey demonstrated his commitment to his alma mater while building a career that spanned such notable institutions as the IRS, Doubleday Book Co., European American Bank, Morgan Stanley, Renaissance Technologies and sustained that commitment as he branched off into his own businesses, Harbor Financial Management and Frey Quantitative Strategies. His first foray into teaching at SBU was as an assistant professor in the Psychology Department, then in the Education and Special Development Department, followed by the Institute for Pattern Analysis, and as a Research Professor in the Applied Math and Statistics Department, an appointment he has held since 2004. In 2008, the Frey Family Foundation established the Frey Endowed Chair and Professorship in Quantitative Finance in the Department of Applied Mathematics and

Cut up fresh veggies and pair with low-fat ranch dressing, sunflower seed butter, veggie dip, low-fat plain Greek yogurt, or hummus. • Veggie kabobs with cucumber chunks, cherry tomatoes, bell pepper wedges, and other veggies. • Have kids make their own trail mix, and limit the chocolate chips, preferably dark chocolate, to one tablespoon per baggie. Mix: whole grain cereal,

dried fruits like raisins, dried cranberries, or dry mango-pieces, sunflower or pumpkin seeds and whole grain pretzels. • Make your own portion-sized snacks. For a healthier snack that satisfies salty, crunchy cravings, replace potato chips with a baggie of lowfat microwave popcorn or consider corn or whole grain chips and salsa. • Add an insulated lunch bag and ice pack to your school supply list. Packing your child’s lunch in one of these will help to keep foods cool all morning. Or place a frozen water bottle into the insulated bag in the morning and it will not only keep the food cold, but will be thawed to drink at lunchtime. Putterman also suggests that you vary your child’s weekly menu by changing up the lunchbox routine. The same meals can get boring for kids. Try rotating the types of protein, fruits and vegetables, low-fat dairy and whole grains you use.

The Setauket Yacht Club’s 4th Annual Village Cup Regatta will take place on Saturday, September 7th. The friendly competition between John T. Mather Memorial Hospital and the Village of Port Jefferson raises funds for Mather’s Palliative Medicine Program and The Lustgarten Foundation, which funds pancreatic cancer research. Actor and local resident Ralph Macchio will be at the event as Ambassador for the Regatta to help publicize the important work of the two programs it funds. Macchio’s wife, Phyllis, is a nurse practitioner in Mather’s Palliative Medicine Program. The Regatta consists of Yacht Club-skippered sailboats divided into two teams representing Mather Hospital and the Village of Port Jefferson. Each boat takes one or

more employees from the Hospital or Village as crew and races in one of three classes based on boat size. The races take place on Long Island Sound. The festivities begin in Harborfront Park at 10 am with a 25-piece U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Band. Regatta t-shirts designed by a local artist and signed by Macchio will be available for purchase. The Memorial Parade of Boats begins at 11 am. All sailboats participating in the Regatta will pass by the park dressed in banners and nautical flags. Following the Regatta, a celebratory reception and presentation of the Village Regatta Cup will take place in a restored 1917 shipyard building that now serves as the Port Jefferson Village Center. The Village won the first two Regattas and bad weather forced the cancellation of last year’s race.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone joins with Suffolk County Industrial Development Agency Executive Director Anthony Manetta in announcing an innovative new jobs website that bridges the gap between job seekers with prospective employers in Suffolk County. The site, www.jobs.suffolkida.org, has an initial listing of over 115 jobs and over 20 companies participating. “This is a groundbreaking initiative that the IDA is launching. This helps fuel Suffolk’s innovation and manufacturing economy,” states County Executive Steven Bellone. Graduating college students are especially urged to visit the site for full-time employment opportunities. “Providing this tool for our younger workers is critical to having them continue to call Suffolk County home and reverse the trends of years past.” The website, www.jobs.suffolkida.org, is a sleek, simple to use, free interface where companies post job openings and residents can apply for jobs. This site is specifically tailored to the STEMM fields of science, technology, engineering and math. The initiative adds an “M” on the traditional STEM acronym to work with local manufactures on their hiring needs. The program will be sustainable long term due to a change in the IDA’s policy. Companies who receive agency benefits are now required to post jobs online. Currently, companies are to list the jobs they create with the NYS Department of Labor; however now County residents will have more efficient and direct access to jobs created by companies who receive IDA incentives. “This initiative provides a unique opportunity in a highly focused industry specific environment to mutually benefit our companies and workforce,” says Anthony Manetta, CEO/ Executive Director of the Suffolk County

IDA. “Now with this new posting requirement, IDA companies will be more engaged in recruiting locally to fill jobs they create for receiving tax incentives.” Yusong Yin, CEO of Photonics Industries says regarding the new initiative, “The IDA is providing a dedicated site geared toward applicants that I want to reach. This is a great program, I’m proud to be part of it.” Potential employers like Mr. Yin have always looked locally for talent. The IDA’s new website is creating a medium by which those employers can easily find talented local applicants. This jobs effort at the IDA will give the residents of Suffolk County and the businesses a new job development tool,” explains Commissioner of Labor Samuel Chu. Suffolk County Deputy Executive and Commissioner of Economic Development & Planning Joanne Minieri states, “Creating a pro-business and pro-workforce website focused on STEMM jobs brings a unfounded level of government support.” The IDA has also partnered with WorkMarket, an IDA Boost Company, to link to the company’s freelance work opportunities job feed. Long Island based companies who are not Suffolk County IDA clients are encouraged to join the site. There are two requirements for a company’s participation: they have to be based in Suffolk County, and their company must be in a STEMM industry or the perspective job is STEMM related. Committee members from the Walk for Beauty on August 15th presented a check for $25,000 representing proceeds from the 2012 walk to benefit cancer research at Stony Brook University Cancer Center. Receiving the check on behalf of Stony Brook University were Yusuf Hannun, MD, Director, Stony Brook Cancer Center, Vice Dean, Cancer Medicine, and the Joel Kenny Professor of Medicine, and Rose Cardin, RN, MSN, Associate Director for Cancer Services at Stony Brook Medicine. Funds raised in 2012 will support the research of Michael Hayman, PhD, Professor in the Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology at Stony Brook University, who gave an overview of his work to develop a drug that more selectively targets cancer cells. Researchers know that high levels of certain enzymes may contribute to the growth of cancer cells, Hayman said. But drugs that inhibit those enzymes can also affect normal cells. So Hayman is taking a different approach in his research: designing drugs that are activated by two different classes of enzymes found in certain types of cancer, including breast and prostate cancer, so that the drugs can more selectively target the cancer only. Over the past 19 years, the Walk for Beauty committee has raised more than $1 million for cancer research and patient support at Stony Brook. The event is an allvolunteer initiative with no administrative costs. All of the proceeds stay in the community to benefit cancer research at Stony Brook. Gloria Rocchio, President of the Ward Melville Heritage Organization, presenting co-sponsor of the walk with Stony Brook Medicine, said the event

has been a successful collaboration between the hospital, area businesses, schools and governmental leaders since it was initiated in 1994. “The Walk for Beauty has contributed $1.175 million toward research at Stony Brook Medicine,” Rocchio said. “In addition, the Walk for Beauty has helped thousands of patients by providing prostheses and wigs to those in need. These seed grants resulted in eight additional grants from national organizations totaling over $7 million.” The 2013 walk will honor two community members who have supported the walk since its inception: Jim Condron, Vice President and Market Manager of WALK AM/FM Radio, and Leah S. Dunaief, Editor and Publisher of the Times Beacon Record newspapers, two longtime supporters of the walk. The breast cancer survivor honoree is Janet Taormina of Patchogue, who was diagnosed at Stony Brook Cancer Center in 2010. With support from the hospital medical staff and her friends and family, she not only survived breast cancer, she thrived. “Everyone responded to me with tenderhearted compassion, constant encouragement and lots of hugs,” she said. The 20th Annual Walk for Beauty will be held on Sunday, October 20th, at Stony Brook Village Center. The walk includes 4K and 6K options, with the 6K walk route encompassing Avalon Park and Preserve. Checkin starts at 8:30 a.m. and the walk begins at 9:30 a.m. The cost is $20 if paid by October 6th, $25 thereafter. And just like that, Labor Day is upon us. The muchmaligned “Last Weekend Of Summer,” even though summer won’t, in actuality, end for nearly another month. But in a society dictated by the school calendar, apparently we must all take our cues from those less-than-thrilled students returning to the classroom and collectively mourn over those last golden beach days, that final holiday BBQ… and let’s not forget to whisk away any remaining traces of white clothing, the ultimate “fall” faux pas. (If only it was actually fall!) It’s funny, as much as we all anticipate summer each

year, I would be willing to bet that most of us did not do half of what we planned to over these last three months. Head to the beach every weekend? Doubtful. Plan BBQs and boat trips and day trips to Montauk and Fire Island? Maybe one, here and there. A few stolen moments is all we ever seem to get between work and daily responsibilities and prior commitments – even the children, supposedly the ones with all the free time these days, seem to be stretched thin with all their extracurricular activities, youth sports and play dates. on February 13th, 1888 by John L. Havens, a local merchant who operated a general merchandise store, and later became a New York State Senator. The meeting was held in Elbert Ruland’s Tin Shop, where the plans for the formation of the Hook & Ladder Co. were discussed.

The first firehouse was built in 1889 at no cost to the taxpayers on the corner of Clinton Street and Main Street. This original firehouse may still be seen at the Fireman’s Memorial Park in Ridge, where it is now used as a museum.

Conservation Center Reopens

Dr. Erwin J. Ernst, the center has been vital to the joint legacy left to the community by Dr. Ernst and Ward Melville. In the 1960s (to prevent development slated to occur on the land), Dr. Ernst persuaded Mr. Melville to purchase the wetlands habitat. The 88-acre preserve is now home to scores of plant and animal species and is cited by Stony Brook University School of Marine & Atmospheric Sciences as the most pristine salt marsh on Long Island. Young people eager to get back to the center to learn about marine science were able to do so in July, participating in two summer programs despite the lack of air conditioning. Renovations, including the recently installed

air conditioning, are now complete, however, funding is still needed in the amount of $3,500 for new classroom chairs destroyed by water during the superstorm. Laura Huang Ernst, WMHO Trustee and widow of Dr. Ernst said, “I want to thank everyone for their generous donations to refurbish the EMCC. The enthusiasm shown by the donors recognizes their support for these programs that have had a major impact on students all across the country. The Ward Melville Heritage Organization’s Ernst Marine Conservation Center (EMCC) at West Meadow Creek, recently reopened with a special reception and ribboncutting ceremony to celebrate the new and refurbished facility after it was badly damaged by Hurricane Sandy. The event brought together a diverse group of donors who contributed to the EMCC fundraising campaign. They included individuals, companies and those who also donated via a crowdfunding campaign through indiegogo. com entitled, “Rebuild a Classroom in the Heart of the LI Wetlands.” All were able to meet and celebrate their efforts together.
