New York Blood Center has joined blood donor organizations across 21 countries with the Missing Type campaign to highlight an almost 30% international drop in new blood donors compared to a decade ago. Every second, three people across the world receive a life changing blood transfusion, thanks to selfless donors who answer the call to donate. Participating blood services reported the number of people becoming donors and giving blood for the first time decreased by 27.6% since 2005. In the United States, there is a particular need for new donors with O negative blood, the universal blood type, and donors of minority backgrounds such as Latino/Hispanic

Missing Type campaign – first held in England and North Wales by NHS Blood and Transplant in 2015 – this year brings together 25 blood services from 21 countries, covering one billion of the world’s population, who are each calling for new donors to ensure blood donations and a steady supply for future generations. Throughout the global “Missing Type” campaign, A’s, B’s, and O’s, the letters of the main blood groups, will disappear in everyday and iconic locations in New York City with the help and support of organizations and local businesses. The Missing Type letters will also be disappearing from famous locations in
Australia, America, Japan, Ireland, England, and many more countries. Celebrities supporting the campaign include actress Jamie Lee Curtis and rapper LL Cool J. NYBC and Lauren Shields, a sixteen-yearold blood recipient who needed life-saving blood transfusions during her heart transplant in 2009, rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange in support of the Missing Type campaign last week on Tuesday, August 9th. Robert Purvis, Vice President of NYBC said, “New York Blood Center is very proud to be part of the international Missing Type campaign which has the power to raise awareness globally on the everyday need for blood – especially O- which is the universal blood type and is always in short supply. The campaign couldn’t happen at a better time, as August is such a high vacation month!
You can start donating blood across the U.S. from age sixteen, with a parent’s written consent. O negative blood type, the universal donor that is most reached for in the E.R., is found more commonly within the Latino/Hispanic and African American populations. However, these populations are underrepresented in the donor pool, and with the increasing population rate, their communities are in need. “We need people to come out and support one another, by donating blood and your time, you are saving someone’s life, just like mine. Blood is needed for transfusions during organ transplants or when someone is undergoing chemotherapy. Without blood and people who donated I would not be here today,” said Shields.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) received a $2,500 grant from PSEG for the Student Assistance Program (SAP). Funding will help to support the ongoing operation of LICADD’s SAP designed to educate young people about the potential health consequences associated with substance abuse in an age appropriate manner. The TGFD prevention program helps children build core social competencies, refusal skills and protective factors relating to tobacco and other drug use during their critical formative educational years. The Power of Positivity By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
I have often admired those who have the ability to see the good in every situation, those seemingly mystical individuals who appear to glide through life surrounded by an aura of peace and contentment, no matter what obstacles may be thrown their way. How it is that such an approach comes so naturally for some, yet is a constant struggle for others? Certainly, we all come from different circumstances, are faced with varying situations in our everyday lives – but, at our core, we are all made up of the same basic components. How we choose to deal with life’s variables is what makes us each unique. Do we meet them head on, or do we shy away? Is our tendency to be confrontational, or passive? Are we cynical or receptive to new ideas and methodologies?
Personally, I would brand myself a mixture of these facets, somewhat cynical, but yet still idealistic enough to remain hopeful that things will get better, over time, somehow. A positive mentality goes a long way, that is undeniable; and being open to possibilities will always seem like the better approach to putting up walls and allowing yourself to become consumed by the negativity surrounding you. Of course, sometimes we need a little help to implement these ideologies, and for that, I have sought out the practice of yoga over the last several years. Initially intended as a way to fill the void left by my “retirement” from 20 years of dancing, it has served as far more of a peaceful retreat from the world, an avenue to truly relax and decompress. Sure, it has its physical benefits as well, but the mental state it helps you to achieve is truly priceless.
The key, naturally, is to take this practice and apply it to those many hours spent outside the yoga studio, to transfer it into the “real” world beyond the self-made sanctuary. This can be found anywhere really, from a few hours soaking in the rays of the sun poolside, to walking along the shoreline with the ocean’s waves caressing your toes, to sitting on the edge of a dock taking in the last golden glow of sunset. You need only to remain open-minded, to see the beauty of each day, and to channel that positivity into a productive mentality. Easier said than done? Sure. But it can be done. It has been, by those who have chosen to cast aside the negative. My goal in this, my 34th year, is to embody the same characteristics those I admire do. And why not. Here’s to a new year…my new year. Plenty to smile about.

Though camels are thought of as being inherently wild animals, they were domesticated thousands of years ago by perfume traders looking for a method of transportation. They eventually went on to become the primary source of transport for people throughout Asia and Africa, much like a horse in Europe and the Americas. For many centuries, they have also been relied on for shade, milk, meat, wool and hides and are still used in many desert locations to pull ploughs, turn waterwheels and transport people and goods along routes inaccessible to motor vehicles. Camels have a reputation of being ill-tempered,
moody creatures that spit and kick, but they are actually very patient and intelligent. With a max height of more than six feet and weight of over 1,500 pounds, these gentle giants can live to be as old as 40. Contrary to popular belief, camels do not store water in their humps, which are actually a mound of fatty tissue from which the animal draws energy when food is difficult to find. They do, however, also require little water if their regular diet contains good, moisture-rich plants and can withstand severe dehydration as their unique metabolism enables them to store the water in their bloodstream. Play for Peace a Success Over the weekend, the 8th annual “Play for Peace” Tournament was held at the Patchogue-Medford Youth Soccer League’s fields on Sipp Avenue. More than 500 players, spectators, coaches and volunteers came together on a day of record-breaking temperatures. “This was our best year yet,” stated Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco. “This year we’ve had more teams, more sponsors, more spectators and more donors to our dinner than ever. The best part is that the funds raised for the tournament will go to a very worthy cause.” Deputy Presiding Officer Calarco first organized the tournament in 2009 in response to the murder of Ecuadorian immigrant Marcelo Lucero, while he was an aide to Legislator
Jack Eddington. Since then it has grown to include women’s teams and a children’s soccer clinic hosted by the New York Cosmos. In 2013, the tournament first included a “champion’s dinner,” donated by local restaurants and where the players all have a chance to sit together and eat when the games are finished. “This tournament has become one of the signature events of the summer for the soccerplaying community,” stated Deputy Presiding Officer Calarco. “This could not be done without the partnership of the Patchogue-Medford Youth Soccer League and a host committee of dedicated volunteers who work all year to make this event as success.” Volunteers from Church of the Nazarene,
St. Francis de Sales and Suffolk Federal Credit Union spent the day tending to the players and serving dinner after the games. This year’s funds will be donated to Long Island Head Start’s scholarship program. Corporate sponsors of the event include HealthFirst, Gershow Recycling, Suffolk County Police Benevolent Association, TriTec Real Estate, Brookhaven Memorial Hospital, Suffolk Transportation Service and Bridgehampton National Bank. Coca-Cola donated 40 cases of Dasani Water and Powerade to keep the players hydrated. More than 30 local businesses and restaurants sponsored individual teams or donated food to the dinner.
Long Island’s newest public school leaders were welcomed and introduced to the area’s seasoned colleagues during SCOPE’S 32nd annual Dinner Meeting for Superintendents and School Board Members, held at the St. John University’s Oakdale campus on
August 11th. The event provided the opportunity for newly appointed superintendents and newly elected school board trustees to mingle and share ideas with fellow educators from school districts across Nassau and Suffolk counties. During his introduction
and welcome, SCOPE Executive Director George L. Duffy urged those in attendance to utilize the many organizations associated with SCOPE and noted that developing the minds of students is an educator’s most important job. “The

SUFFOLK COP HONORED - The East Northport Fire Department recently recognized Suffolk County Police Officer Christine Blauvelt for her dedicated service upon her retirement. Officer Blauvelt was an asset to the department and community for over 20 years proudly serving in the 206 sector car that patrols the East Northport area. The department presented Blauvelt with a plaque for her dedicated service and her valued friendship to the officers and members of the East Northport Fire Department. Over the summer, elementary and middle school students in the Port Jefferson School District participated in the district’s annual summer music camp. The three-week camp gave beginning and
intermediate band and string students the opportunity to make new friends while advancing their musical abilities in a positive and enjoyable environment. Also, for the first time, the camp offered a “Little

Maestros” violin class to first- and second-graders, enabling young students to begin their musical studies prior to participating in the district’s formal fourth-grade instrument program.
Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright attended the Chicken Hill Barbecue fundraiser hosted by the Three Village Community Trust on July 23rd. Offering great food and fun, the barbecue drew many friends coming together to support a worthy cause. The local not-for-profit organization has preserved the all-butforgotten homes of the Setauket community,
dubbed Chicken Hill. The unique buildings, once inhabited by workers of the Setauket Rubber Factory, served as a back drop for the barbecue. Occupied in the mid 20th century, the homes of the Chicken Hill community on 25A and Main Street are now undergoing restoration. “Thanks to the members of the Three Village Community Trust, Chicken

Approximately 100 residents attended the first NARCAN Training Program sponsored by Brookhaven Town in June. In response to the turn out and high volume of calls the Youth Bureau received regarding the program, Supervisor Romaine, Councilman Michael Loguercio and the Brookhaven Youth Bureau began making plans to host a second NARCAN Training Program. In July, Brookhaven Town also sponsored a program geared specifically toward
parents and guardians. A clinical supervisor from the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) discussed a variety of topics at Town Hall; including new trends in substance abuse, signs of drug and alcohol abuse, and what steps to take if abuse is taking place. The clinical supervisor also spent time answering questions from concerned parents and guardians who were in attendance. Summer Pages Twenty-three students are headed back to school this fall with a unique conversation starter after participating in the 2016 Suffolk County Legislature Page Program. Now in its second year, this summer’s Page Program drew students from a variety of schools and majors, culminating in a graduation ceremony on August 5th. Over the course of 11 weeks this summer, Pages got a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of local government by working in legislative offices, visiting various county departments and participating in the legislative process. “These Pages were a bright, enthusiastic bunch who brought a lot of character to the Legislature this summer,” said Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. “Each of the Pages brought something special to the table, and, just as it is in real politics, they had different ideas and interests but worked together to find common ground and ultimately, success. Suffolk County is lucky to have such innovative young leaders. We wish them well in their future endeavors.” “I’m very proud of all the hard work the Pages have done this year,” said Minority Leader and 14th District Legislator Kevin McCaffrey. “They are a very smart, hardworking and determined group of young leaders who are going to make great strides wherever they go in this world.” Pages this year toured various county facilities, including the Medical Examiner’s Office and the Riverhead Correctional Facility. They also saw the legislative process at work when they sat in on meetings of the full legislature and later held meetings of their own to craft and debate mock legislation.
