Ruff Riders Rally
M
ore than 100 motorcycle riders and animal lovers participated in Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue and Adoption Center’s Eighth Annual Ruff Riders Rally. The event raised money for the care of rescued animals. The motorcycle rally started at Petco in Rocky Point. From there, bikers toured eastern Suffolk County, through southern Long Island, and ended up at 89 North in Patchogue. Thanks to all who turned out!

This Labor Day weekend the American Airpower Museum at Republic Airport will launch an unprecedented formation flight of historic B-25 Mitchell bombers and WWII escort fighters for a tribute flight near the World Trade Center and Statue of Liberty to salute our armed forces serving in the War on Terror.
Throughout the upcoming holiday weekend, Friday, August 30th through Monday September 2nd, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., these aircraft will also be on public display at the museum’s Farmingdale facility along with a squadron of other World War II planes, vintage cars and period armor as it hosts

The Long Island Game Farm recently received a hammock made out of a used fire hose that was created by a retired firefighter for the Game Farm’s gibbons. The gibbons, who are sisters, immediately started enjoying their new hammock once it was installed in their cage. Tom Lambui, a retired fireman and husband of Stacy Lambui, who works in the Game Farm’s Customer Service Department, acquired an old fire hose from Anthony
J. Morabito, Service Representative, Firematic Supply Co. in East Yaphank. Mr. Lambui built the new hammock and presented it to the Game Farm for the gibbons to use. “We are so thankful for Tom’s generous gift,” says Melinda Novak, Vice P r e s i d e n t / C o - O w n e r, Long Island Game Farm. “We recently installed the hammock and the gibbon sisters immediately started enjoying it. It’s really wonderful!” A gibbon is a part of the
ape family, and spends the majority of its time in trees. Gibbons range in color from gray and black to brown. They have extremely long arms which help them balance and settle as they jump from tree to tree. They can jump more than 25 feet and land fairly easily. Training To Increase Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and the Suffolk County Fire & EMS Joint Council today announced an effort to increase training for first responders by putting the Suffolk County Fire Academy under the Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services (FRES). Suffolk County would maintain its current budget of nearly $2 million for the Fire Academy. The move is not intended to save money in the nearterm, but to provide more classes and greater oversight. The reorganization would result in hundreds of more training hours for volunteer first responders. There will be approximately 900 additional field training hours by offering each department eight field trainings next year, up from six currently. Under the plan submitted to the county by the current organization, that number would have dropped to just five field trainings per department next year. “Working together with the first responder community, this is a common-sense measure to provide as much training and education as we possibly can,” County Executive Bellone said. “These men and women are true heroes who put their lives on the line for us day after day. By reorganizing the way training is administered we can ensure that they are better equipped to face any challenge they may encounter.”
Currently, the Fire Academy is administered and managed by the Suffolk County Vocational Education and Extension Board (VEEB), which receives most of its budget from Suffolk County and the New York State Department of Education (SED). Due to declines in SED funding, the VEEB has cut the number of courses for first responders significantly, from 7,203 in 2010 to 5,678 in 2012, a 21 percent decrease. This reorganization has the support of the Suffolk County Fire & EMS Joint Council (which includes the SC Fire Chiefs Council, the SC Fire District Officers Association, the SC Volunteer Fireman’s Association, the SC Ambulance Chief’s Association and the SC FRES Commission). The Joint Council has been working with FRES Commissioner Joe Williams for more than a year to negotiate a new contract with the VEEB which does not cut any more classes. When that effort stalled, the Joint Council worked with FRES to support a reorganization of the service. “We support the decision to have the County manage the Suffolk County Fire Academy and we look forward to continuing to work with the County Executive to restore the level of training for our first responders,” John J. Carney, President of the SC Chiefs Council, said. In a letter to the County Executive, the leaders of the
Suffolk County Fire & EMS Joint Council wrote, “efforts like this show that collectively our Elected Officials and the Leadership of Volunteer Service can work together for the betterment of the services we all ultimately provide for the Taxpayers of this County.” FRES is in a unique position to increase training and education for Suffolk County’s first responders without increasing costs. It would work to achieve designation of the Fire Academy as a regional training and fusion center, making it eligible for grant funding from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security or other partnerships with state, federal or other agencies. Such funding and partnerships are not available to the VEEB. FRES has previously received a commitment from the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control to fund 100 additional courses, which is also not available to the VEEB. FRES would align the Fire Academy workforce under Suffolk County labor agreements, tying salaries and fringe benefits to more cost-effective levels and would streamline appropriate support functions and inventoryincluding building and vehicle maintenance, some clerical work and vehicles, to gain immediate operational efficiencies.

Stony Brook University Hospital has named Mary Briney as Volunteer of the Year and Elizabeth O’Grady as Junior Volunteer of the Year for 2013 in recognition of their dedicated volunteer service to the hospital. O’Grady and Briney were among those honored at the hospital’s annual Volunteer Recognition luncheon, held on July 17th at the Hilton Garden Inn. Volunteers received awards for reaching service milestones ranging from 100 to 14,500 hours of service. Briney began her volunteer service in 2011 and has donated nearly 500 hours to Stony Brook University Cancer Center patients. “At the Cancer Center, Mary coordinates the biweekly soup luncheon where she prepares warm bowls of soup to distribute to patients who are looking for a soothing snack while receiving their cancer treatments,” said Kathy Kress, Assistant
Director of Volunteer Services at SBUH. “At the hospital, Mary acts as the ambassador for the inpatient Arts in Medicine program. She is always there to help out so that the patients get the most benefit from the activity. Mary is affable, empathetic and a genuine caring person. She is always in tune with the patients’ needs and always makes sure whatever is needed is done with care and accuracy.” O’Grady, 18, was born at Stony Brook University Hospital and spent time as a newborn in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. She began volunteering at the hospital in 2012 and has donated more than 200 hours of service to patients at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. The daughter of Jerome and Marian O’Grady, she is a rising senior at Ward Melville High School. “Elizabeth has been described as a very mature and responsible high school student,” Kress
said. “In the playroom, she engages in various play activities with the patients and their siblings and goes out of her way to make sure that the children have whatever they need. She has been known to stay after her shift to find a missing game or DVD that a child has asked for. Elizabeth is a pleasure to work with and a great addition to the Child Life department.” Stony Brook University Hospital Volunteers provide help each year caring for patients and spend time with patients’ family members. Each year, more than 700 Junior and Senior Volunteers assist staff with the day-today work that contributes to a quality healthcare experience for patients and families. Volunteers Of The Year
At the Rotary Club of the Moriches’ meeting at Ladakins Restaurant in Moriches on August 1st, Kim Stevens of Eastport was presented with a check for $2,650 for winning the Big Duck Race that took place at the 45th Annual Duck Race & Duck BBQ on July 13th at Camp Pa-QuaTuck. After receiving her check, Ms. Stevens announced that she will donate $1,600 of the prize money to the
camp’s scholarship fund, matching the donation made by the Seatuck Cove Rotary Club, of which Ms. Stevens is a member. As a result, the camp received $3,200 that will allow four special-needs children to attend camp for one week. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages 6-21 with both physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to help these children
to achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education. A Time To Celebrate By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Birthdays. Some people love them, others despise that annual reminder that, like it or not, time is flying by – with or without you. Personally, I’ve always been a fan – not on the my-birthday-should-be-anational-holiday scale, but definitely as an occasion that I’ve looked forward to each year. It’s a time to celebrate with family and friends, and to show your appreciation to others when their special days come around. Too often, we get so caught up in our daily lives that we forget to acknowledge those who
play such an important role. Sure, those milestones can serve as not-so-subtle reminders that, hey, the clock is ticking – didn’t you have all sorts of things you wanted to accomplish by now?!? Better get to it! But I think those thoughts can creep in at any age, young, old or in between. We set hypothetical deadlines for when things “have” to be done, knowing full well that life rarely works out so perfectly. The best we can do is move forward, making a little progress along the way, pausing to celebrate and appreciate those things
– and people – who matter most. The rest – the gray hairs, the wrinkles, the aches and pains – they’re just normal wear and tear from a life well lived! So the next time a birthday comes along, milestone or not, try to enjoy it. Appreciate those who wish to appreciate you, and remember to pay it forward when their own special occasions come along. It’s nice to be remembered, and better than that – it’s nice to wake up to a brand new day - or year - with lots to look forward to.

Keeping Healthy At College It’s back-to-school time for college students. Avoiding the dreaded “freshman 15” weight gain is a challenge to some young students when faced for the first time with a daily array of healthy and not-so-healthy food choices. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends that college students, and everyone, know their daily calorie needs and try to create a healthy eating plan that
incorporates a few basic healthy eating goals. Weight Gain A Growing Problem More than 60% of adults in the US are either overweight or obese and the most significant weight changes occur in the 1829 year old age group. A study by Washington University in St. Louis on college students’ weight gain showed that body weight increased in 70% of the 290 students studied
between the beginning of their freshman year and the end of their sophomore year. So what’s a few extra pounds? Obesity can lead to health complications such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Less than 1% of U.S. adults meet the definition for ideal healthy diet and essentially no children meet the goal. To successfully
manage weight, the AHA encourages people to learn about healthier food choices and know how many calories to eat daily. Stop World Hunger Tournament Registration is now underway for the 33rd Annual Stop World Hunger Tennis Tournament. The tournament is open to tennis players who have not qualified to play in this year’s U.S. Open Tennis Tournament. Intermediate (3.0-3.5), advanced intermediate (3.5-4.0), and advanced (4.0-4.5+) players from more than forty Long Island communities are expected to participate. The purpose of the tennis tournament is to provide an enjoyable recreational activity, while helping those in desperate need. All entry fees and donations are forwarded to Catholic Relief Services to assist in their efforts to feed God’s hungry children throughout the world. Assistance is provided where the need is greatest, regardless of race, religion and/or nationality.
Events consist of men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. The cost is $6 for singles and $10 for doubles. Participants schedule their own matches at mutally convenient times and sites. All matches are to be played between September 14th and November 16th. On August 24th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. will host its 2nd Annual Riverhead Walk for Alzheimer’s & Clambake, which will be held in beautiful downtown Riverhead. Continental breakfast and registration will start at 9 a.m., with opening ceremonies at 10 a.m. and a ribbon cutting and start of the Walk at 11 a.m. The Walk will begin at Milton L. Burns Park (formerly Grangebel Park) at Peconic Avenue and go along the scenic waterfront, ending at the Long Island Aquarium & Exhibition Center. After the Walk, participants who raise $100 or more will enjoy a clambake and buffet lunch and full access to the aquarium, while children will take part in a scavenger hunt. Those in attendance will
also have the opportunity to learn about Alzheimer’s Disease and how to get involved with this critical cause, from advocacy opportunities, the latest in Alzheimer’s research and clinical trial enrollment to support programs and services. This year’s fundraising goal is $50,000. Last year, more than 200 people took part in the Riverhead Walk and Clambake, with the fundraising goal of $25,000. Through the efforts of these individuals and teams who took part in this event, they exceeded the goal by raising more than $35,000. Registration for teams and individuals is still ongoing. Rebuilding Together and the American Red Cross have joined forces to help bring nearly 90 homes devastated by Hurricane Sandy back to safe and healthy housing conditions. Thanks to a $2.25 million grant from the American Red Cross to Rebuilding Together, these low-income homeowners can look forward to rebuilding their lives and returning to their communities. Rebuilding Together’s local affiliates and volunteers in New York City, Long Island, Bergen County and Jersey City will be providing free critical home repairs in many of the areas affected by Hurricane Sandy. Most of the homes will require modifications and repairs that may address electrical and plumbing issues, flooring, drywall, appliance replacements, painting, basement and exterior rehabilitation with the goal of ensuring all of the homes are

Summer Prep Work Pays Dividends
As summer comes to a close, many teens find it easy to get caught up in the stress and monotony associated with school. Some find it even easier to give up on the coursework assigned during the summer break. Reading all of the books and doing all of the mathematics packets may seem like the least desirable option during these warm months, but it is undoubtably the most crucial. Summer homework does not bring many students joy. Summer homework does, however have an enormous impact on your grades. Missing this first assignment can be detrimental to your first
quarter average. In an era where college admissions are at an all time high in selectivity, those few points can make or break a person. Something as small as forgetting to turn in that book report freshman year can, in time, prevent you from attaining your dreams. With this in mind, it is an absolute necessity to complete your work! Even if school hasn’t yet started, the choices you make can affect your standing in September. In my school, your summer work accounts for about 20% of your first quarter grade! That means, if you were to get a zero on that work, you could get a maximum of only eighty.
Study hard now, so you won’t have to the night before school starts. Doing a little bit of work each night will undoubtably make your last few days of summer more enjoyable. Even though reading a book or doing some math problems may seem like a terrible time, every moment you spend will be repaid when you get into the college of your dreams. Putting in the extra effort now will result in a positive outcome in the future. On the other hand, slacking during your summers will only haunt you. Take the first step towards a superior grade - do your summer homework!

Scholarship Recipient On July 24th, Briscoe Protective Systems Inc. invited Daniel Scura, the third recipient of the Bert Briscoe Memorial Scholarship, to receive his $250 check and certificate. He was also treated to lunch in his honor and a tour of the building. Daniel recently graduated from the State University of New York at Cortland and will be attending Drexel University
College of Medicine in the fall. He was chosen to receive the scholarship based on his community service. He did an Eagle Scout project collecting supplies for U.S. troops overseas and volunteered his time at local hospitals and the New York Blood Center. (CSCS), and the New York State Caregiving & Respite Coalition (NYSCRC). The session was held at Dowling College and was one of several throughout the state of New York.

On August 11th, Supervisor Ed Romaine attended the Eagle Scout Court of Honor at the Middle Island Fire House to present a proclamation to Gregory S. Egan for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. Gregory managed a crew that constructed a Trailhead Message Board at Bartlett Pond Park
in Middle Island. The message board will be used to inform the community about park events and the hiking trail that has been newly established. “I commend Gregory for completing a project that will benefit the residents of Brookhaven Town,” said Supervisor Romaine, “Eagle Scouts are the leaders of tomorrow, and

Our Lady of Consolation Nursing and Rehabilitative Care Center, a member of Catholic Health Services (CHS), is pleased to announce that they have received a grant for $300,000 to help support the funding of the Children’s Care Pavilion for ventilator dependent children. This pavilion will address the urgent need for these services on Long Island. Additional grants and resources will allow Our Lady of Consolation to extend their clinical expertise and provide long-term care to a special population of ventilator dependent children. When a child living on Long Island becomes sick or injured and requires the long term assistance of a ventilator for breathing, there is at present no local comprehensive program to support them. These children must be relocated miles from home, often out of state for their care. Last year, Catholic Health
Services received a HEAL grant of 3.2 million dollars to begin development of a cross continuum of care. Catholic Health Services hopes to achieve a continuum of care for these special patients through collaboration between its members. A 10bed pediatric rehabilitation unit at St. Charles Hospital will provide initial acute rehabilitation for children who recently experienced a catastrophic event with a goal of returning them home with support from a pediatric team of Catholic Home. Children unable to return home will be transferred to longterm care at Our Lady of Consolation Nursing and Rehabilitative Center (OLC). OLC’s pediatric ventilator unit will be a 22 bed pavilion built entirely for the pediatric population within the existing footprint of the nursing home. This space will also include a child friendly outdoor recreation
area. The educational, nutritional and clinical needs of these new pediatric residents will be provided within in a child-friendly environment. This will not be a unit for children embedded in a geriatric care facility. Rather, it will be a nurturing environment with its own discrete entrance, space, specialized staff, and program with the sole focus of quality care for children. “This funding from the O’Toole Foundation advances our efforts to develop this critical resource for children and their families,” said Joseph Tomaino, Executive Vice President for Continuing Care Division of Catholic Health Services, “The impact of injury or illness on these families is compounded by the painful separation that they must go through in order to obtain services.”

LIFESAVING ACTIONS - The East Northport Fire Department recently recognized EMT Jon Desjardins with the Department’s EMT Medal and the Chiefs Medal, for his lifesaving actions on the Long Island Rail Road in October of 2012. While commuting to work, Desjardins assisted in the resuscitation of a cardiac arrest patient on the train, which contributed to the full recovery of the 53-year-old man. LIFELONG LEARNERS - Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Business Teachers Kathy Corrado, Jean Murray, and Ginger Rios participated in a Microsoft Windows 8 Learning In Education Workshop at the Microsoft Corporation Long Island Office in Hauppauge. The workshop was hands-on and provided educational uses for the new Windows 8.1 operating system which will be released in the fall. They enriched the learning experience with a trip to the Microsoft Retail Store in Huntington where they arranged an onsite visit to the classes by the techies at Microsoft.
HONORED FOR EFFORTS - The East Northport Fire Department recently recognized the crew members for their actions in assisting with the birth of a happy and healthy baby girl while in transit to Huntington Hospital on May 13th. EMT Brian Hinton, EMT Mathew Simpson, and EMT Nicole Olofson all received the Department’s EMT Medal, and Firefighter Vincent Pastore and Rescue Squad Member Rose Marie Sholes received the Department’s EMS Medal for their efforts.
