Going Green at School Eco-conscious lifestyles may have transformed the ways people behave at home or on the job, but many schools have taken a little longer to embrace eco-friendly practices. But that doesn’t have to continue, as younger generations of students are growing up green and ready to embrace some green strategies in the
classroom. One of the easiest steps to take is to reduce paper usage. According to Edutopia, a K-12 learning and education resource, the average school uses approximately 250,000 pieces of paper per school year. This estimate is based on an average of 50 reams of paper per teacher at a 100-teacher school.
Instead of relying so heavily on paper, students can take notes on laptops or tablets while teachers can rely on smartboards and notebooks for classroom lessons. When paper must be used, make a concentrated effort to discard it in designated recycling bins in each classroom.

Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo was founded in 1970 by Stanley and Diane Novak. Today, almost 50 years later the park is home to over a hundred animals, including over 35 different species. To thank the visitors that have kept the park going for 48 years, the Long Island Game Farm is throwing its first ever Founder’s Day Celebration – A Family Appreciation Day, on Saturday, August 26. Today, I turn 35, making that dreaded leap into the next age bracket. So long 1834. It’s been fun. Though age is but a number, it does tend to carry added significance the higher those digits climb. Each year brings with it a sort of reevaluation of life. Where am I at? Where do I want to be? And, most importantly, how to traverse that at-times tricky road between points A & B. Uneven as it might seem, I do believe we all have a path we are destined to travel. How we choose to navigate it remains somewhat open-ended. I’ve always felt my generation existed on the cusp of two worlds. A child of the 90’s, my teen years were spent listening to the sounds of *NSync and Britney Spears and watching T.G.I.F. on ABC
Friday nights. The entire grunge movement passed me by, as did many of the cult classic movies of the time. Twenty years later, I have found a new appreciation for all that came before. Pop culture aside, I feel my particular age group remains the last of the “old school.” We were brought up in an age where technology was limited to televisions and radios, Walkmen and cassette tapes. No one had a cell phone until I was well into college, perhaps a beeper if they were lucky. If you wanted to reach a friend, you called their home and most likely were greeted by their parents, who knew you by name. A night out consisted of being dropped off at the local mall or movie theater, then picked up by those same parents and taken

to a local diner. To say things have changed would be an understatement. Of course, this is the case with each generation, as its members grow and flourish and begin to explore the world on their own. We pick up on elements of those who came before and modify them to fit our constantly evolving view of our surroundings as they, too, evolve on a near daily basis. The hope, in the end, is that we will never completely let go of those things which shaped us during our most formative years, the core values we were raised with. No matter how life may change, no matter how many age brackets we pass through, we must remain true to ourselves. Here’s to 35. Here’s to the next chapter, a fresh page in the old book.

On August 1st, Supervisor Ed Romaine, Councilman Neil Foley and Councilman Dan Panico held a press conference at the BrickHouse Brewery in Patchogue to announce the launch of the Town’s “Brew to Moo” program which is aimed to reduce the amount of local brewery by-product in our
waste stream. Local breweries and distilleries produce tons of spent grains which have reduced caloric content but provide protein and fiber that can supplement corn for feed. The Town of Brookhaven will regularly pick up the spent grains and deliver it to farms and ranches to be used as feed

for their animals. The first ranch to sign on to the program is the Double D Bar Ranch in Manorville. Using spent grains for livestock feed dates back to the advent of beer, and with corn and other commodity prices rising, the use of brewery by-products is growing.

The Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe has launched its first Exhibit to honor Nikola Tesla, entitled, “Tesla – Past, Present, and Future.” The Exhibit is currently at the Ward Melville Heritage Center in Stony Brook. The exhibit will run through Labor Day and will later be installed at the Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe in Shoreham. The exhibit includes a Tesla Coil in action transmitting wireless electricity, 3D hands on exhibit on the Induction Motor, a model of Tesla’s Lab and Tower, a Jacob’s Ladder, Interactive Augmented Reality Exhibits on Tesla, a singing Tesla Coil, the 9th Tesla Roadster off of the Tesla Motors Assembly line, Light Bulbs you can purchase that Tesla Invented and much more. comic who write the blog known as “The Oatmeal”, the non-profit group the Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe purchased the abandoned Photo Paper Processing Plant from the Agfa Corporation in 2013. With the generous support from folks like Elon Musk and the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation, the Tesla Science Center has begun the process of rehabilitating the 16 acre site which is home to the historic lab building of the great and often forgotten inventor Nikola Tesla and turning it into a Museum and Science Center. The building is also historic and special because it was designed by the noted architect of his time Stanford White, who also designed the original Madison Square Garden and the beautiful arch at Washington Square in New York City to name a couple. The non-profit is hoping to open some exhibit space to the public next year where the exhibit at the Ward Melville Heritage Center will move to. This new Museum and Science Center is also embarking on an ambitious fund raising campaign so that it may develop the site into a museum that
honors the legacy of Nikola Tesla, a science center for future generations to learn and experience science and STEM programs first hand, for future science enthusiasts to and be able to confer with other scientists and educators at TED style talks and conferences, and an Incubation center where future entrepreneurial scientists can come to utilize cutting edge technologies to advance their ideas and inventions. This Museum and Science Center will be a wonderful addition to the cultural offerings on the east end of Long Island while paying tribute to one of the greatest inventors of all time. In what has become an eagerly anticipated yearly tradition, Jefferson’s Ferry Life Plan Retirement Community is getting in gear for its 14th annual Monte Carlo Night fundraiser in support of the Jefferson’s Ferry Foundation. Monte Carlo Night is an extravaganza of fabulous food, music, and Monte Carlo-style casino games that draws an enthusiastic crowd of Jefferson’s Ferry residents, friends, families and other supporters of the Life Plan Community. The Jefferson’s Ferry Foundation was primarily established to assist residents and employees in times of need through its Resident Assistance Fund, and will occasionally provide funding for capital projects that benefit the community. Monte Carlo
Night is the Jefferson’s Ferry Foundation’s largest fundraising event, and hosts about 250 people each year. Revenue from ticket sales, games and raffles will directly benefit the Resident Assistance Fund. The Resident Assistance Fund adds an extra layer of security to Jefferson’s Ferry’s Life Plan promise, covering the monthly fees of residents who have outlived their assets or experience an unanticipated financial need through no fault of their own. The Resident Assistance Fund plays a welcome and critical role at Jefferson’s Ferry. “We’ve found that on occasion, even with the best financial planning, a resident may find it difficult to make ends meet,” said Bob Caulfield,
President and CEO of Jefferson’s Ferry. “The Resident Assistance Fund was established to protect the peace of mind that our lifestyle offers residents. On Tuesday, August 1st, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker joined the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County to introduce a new patch program that teaches scouts about the importance of energy conservation, as part of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math initiative (STEM). The event was held at the Discovery World STEM Center at Camp Sobaco in Yaphank. The center offers girls a hands-on approach
to exploring STEM through demonstrations, special guest presentations, and more. “As the former energy director of the Town of Brookhaven, I am pleased to join the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County to unveil the new energy conservation patch program,” said Legislator Anker. “The partnership between PSEG and the Girl Scouts will inspire, motivate, and encourage our girls to explore the
exciting paths of STEM.” The Girl Scouts have partnered with PSEG Long Island for the new program, which teaches girls about the importance of electric safety and energy conservation in the home. Thousands of Long Islanders are expected to join the American Heart Association’s Long Island Heart Walk on Sunday, September 17th to raise funds to fight heart disease and stroke, America’s No. 1 and No. 5 causes of death. The annual event begins at 8:30 a.m. at Jones Beach, Field 5 in Wantagh. The non-competitive, three-mile walk includes teams of employees from local companies, along with friends and family members of all ages. “Walking briskly can lower your risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes as much as running” said Bob Isaksen, Market President, Bank of America, Long Island and Chair of the 2017 Long Island Heart Walk. “I look forward to working with Executive Leaders across Long Island to help raise awareness and funds for the American Heart Association to continue its mission to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.” 80% of Cardiovascular

Sideshow School Coney Island USA and Professa Adam Rinn Present: Sideshow School. Coney Island USA’s Sideshow School is the only school of its kind where students can learn the ancient and sometimes deadly secrets of the sideshow. A new crop of thrill seekers will be attending the next session, scheduled for August 22nd-24th at Sideshows by the Seashore. Now in its 17th year, Sideshow School has taught dozens of potential circus, sideshow and carnival workers how to walk on glass, eat and breathe fire, swallow swords, and hammer nails into their faces, along with a handful of other of the sideshow’s ‘working acts.’ Students take the class at their own risk and must sign a hold harmless agreement absolving the school and its instructors
from any possible injuries the students might incur. “In all the years that I’ve taught sideshow school,” Dean and Professa, Adam Rinn declares, “nobody has ever gotten hurt.” Rinn himself was a graduate of the Sideshow School and went on to become a prolific performer who has entertained audiences throughout North America. Sessions are capped at 10 students so that each student can learn in a safe and controlled atmosphere. “Safety is key when learning these feats,” says Rinn,“we don’t force anything upon the students, they attend the school because they want to learn these unique acts. It’s important to be patient and work with the students at their level.” Those attending the three day, hands on seminar have ranged from doctors,
authors and teachers who have a general interest in sideshow and circus arts to magicians, jugglers and bartenders who have used some of the skills they have learned in their own line of work to sideshow performers looking to expand their repertoire. But it is not all about the ‘working acts.’ The three day session also offers a history of the legendary amusement district and its role in olde time and contemporary freak shows. “It’s very rewarding when the students conquer their fears and hit the ground running,” The Professa states. “After each session, I get a slew of emails thanking me and telling me what a life changing experience sideshow school was. Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker encourages Suffolk County residents struggling with tobacco addiction to enroll in the “Learn to Be … Tobacco Free” program through the Suffolk County Department of Health Services. This program offers support, planning, and counseling for those who are seeking help with breaking their smoking addiction. Classes are FREE for Suffolk County residents with the exception of a nominal fee for medication for those who qualify. A
6-week cessation program will be held at Brookhaven Town Hall (1 Independence Hill, Farmingville) starting on Tuesday, August 29th, from 6 to 7 p.m. The class schedule is as follows: August 29th, September 5th, 12th and 19th, and October 3rd, with a reunion on October 24th. “It is so important that those who are struggling with nicotine addiction receive the support they need,” says Legislator Anker. “No one can go through it alone, and that is why Suffolk County and the Department of Health

Recently, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Town Clerk Donna Lent honored Maddie and Joseph Mastriano, founders of the Three Village Kids Lemonade Stand. The Mastriano’s started selling lemonade at a small stand in front of
their homes five years ago, at ages 11 and 8. Their small venture went from bringing in $2 their first year to raising over $16,000. All profits are donated to Stony Brook’s Children’s Hospital. Their fundraising goal this year is $20,000.

Village Cup Regatta Actor and local resident Ralph Macchio will again act as a community ambassador for the eighth annual Village Cup Regatta on Saturday, September 9th. Presented by the Port Jefferson Yacht Club, the friendly competition between John T. Mather Memorial Hospital and the Village of Port Jefferson raises funds for Mather’s Palliative Medicine Program and The Lustgarten Foundation, which funds pancreatic cancer research. The event has raised more than $377,000 for the two organizations. Macchio’s role as ambassador for the Regatta for the fifth year is to help publicize the important work of the two programs it funds. Macchio’s wife, Phyllis, is a nurse practitioner in Mather’s Palliative Medicine Program. The Regatta consists of Yacht Club-skippered sailboats divided into two teams representing Mather Hospital and the Village of
Port Jefferson. Employees from the Hospital and Village help crew the boats, which race in one of three classes based on boat size. The festivities begin in Harborfront Park at 10 am. -. Regatta t-shirts designed by a local artist and signed by Macchio will be available for purchase along with the event’s commemorative t-shirts, hats and nautical bags. The Memorial Parade of Boats begins at 11 am at the Port Jefferson Village dock. All sailboats participating in the Regatta will pass by the park dressed in banners and nautical flags. Following the Regatta, a celebratory Skipper’s Reception and presentation of the Village Cup will take place in a restored 1917 shipyard building that now serves as the Port Jefferson Village Center. The Cup is currently held by Port Jefferson, which has earned the cup a total of four times. Mather Hospital has won the cup twice, and weather forced the cancellation of the 2012 race. The event is catered
compliments of Schafer’s Port Jefferson restaurant and the Port Jefferson Brewing Company. Choosing where to apply to college is a big decision that can affect the lives of young students for years to come. The college application process can have more immediate impacts as well, as U.S. News reported that the average college application fee was $41 in the spring of 2015, meaning families can expect to spend several hundred dollars just to apply to colleges. The rising cost of a college education coupled with a competitive job market only serve to emphasize the importance high school students and their families must place on deciding where to apply. The following are a handful of strategies families can employ to make students’ decisions regarding where to apply to college a little easier. Don’t hesitate from applying to a dream school. The Princeton Review defines dream schools as those colleges
or universities where a student’s academic credentials fall in the low end or below the school’s averages for students accepted the year prior. But even students who meet the academic requirements established by their dream schools may be hesitant to apply to such schools because of the cost of tuition. Students whose academic records fall just short of their dream schools’ criteria or whose financial means make attending their dream schools seem impossible should still apply to those schools. Financial aid might be available, and schools might look at more than just academic performance, particularly for students whose grades fall just short of last years’ average accepted applicants. Don’t be deterred by application fees. Stanford University’s application fee for 2017 was $90, making the school one of the
more expensive colleges or universities to apply to. But many schools, including Stanford, waive those fees for certain applicants. Students should not expect each school to waive their application fees, but they also should not let those fees deter them from applying, especially if they meet or exceed the application requirements. Choose the right safety school. Safety schools are those colleges or universities where applicants’ academic credentials make them a near certainty to gain admission. But when choosing safety schools, students should pick schools that they would enjoy attending. Applying to a school simply because you can get in and not because you want to enroll there can make for an unpleasant college experience should you ultimately end up attending that college.
Transitioning to Middle School A child’s school-aged years are filled with many different lessons and experiences. While in school, kids have the opportunity to broaden their horizons and meet new people. Many students will attend various schools before moving on to college, and therefore they must learn how to adjust to new schools. While many students attend elementary school together for years, students may not know their classmates once they make it to middle school, which tends to boast larger student bodies than elementary schools. That’s because many middle schools’ student bodies are a combination of several elementary schools. Making the transition from elementary school to middle school or junior high can spark anxiety in students, but that does not have to be. The National Education Association says a common element of a successful middle school experience is a smooth and positive
transition from elementary school. The following are a few ways students can handle their transition to middle school. Participate in a school-based transition program. Middle schools frequently host open houses for elementary school students, who can take tours of the campus. Parents can take part in these events with their children. If your schedule does not allow you to attend, then schedule a private tour with the middle school principal or a faculty member. Middle school guidance counselors or guest speakers also may make the rounds, visiting elementary schools directly. Be sure your student attends such information sessions so he or she can get an idea of what to expect during middle school. Dispel any myths your youngster might have heard about middle school. Youngsters hear lots of things about middle schools, and much of what kids hear might be untrue.
Ask kids what they have heard about the schools they will be moving on to, and then do your best to dispel any myths. Find a middle school buddy. Ask an older sibling or invite someone who is currently enrolled in the school to speak with your child and answer any questions he or she may have. Hearing directly from a fellow student may make your child feel more comfortable about what to expect. Talk about any other fears. Engage in an open dialogue with your son or daughter about any additional fears he or she may have. If students are worried about academics, spend some time over the summer going over the curriculum. If the potential for peer pressure is a cause for concern, reinforce advice on how to react to peer pressure. Parents and their children can take several steps to make students’ transitions to middle school as smooth as possible.

Federation of Organizations honored volunteers from its Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion programs this past June at Stonebridge Country Club in Smithtown, New York. More than 250 guests attended The Senior Volunteer Recognition Luncheon, held annually to recognize dedicated seniors making a difference in the lives of children with special needs as well as homebound seniors. During the event, emceed by News 12’s Doug Geed, Federation’s Chief Executive Officer, Barbara Faron, presented Chief Operating Officer Philip Matcovsky as the organization’s “Man of the Year,” for 30 years of outstanding service. Matcovsky joined Federation in 1987 as a counselor in the homeless outreach program before moving up the ranks to become a supervisor, director and Chief Operating Officer. As COO, Matcovsky has been instrumental in helping Federation and its 500 employees navigate major changes to managed care, while managing day-to-day operations of an agency with a $48 million budget. He continues to strive for the best possible care for Long Island seniors, as well as individuals who are
