One Last Look By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As an editor, it would stand to reason that I have a bit of a pet peeve when it comes to misspelled words and poor grammar. But understandably, everyone makes mistakes from time to time. Lately, though, it seems that these errors have been featured front and center on a number of occasions. First, there was the faux pas of Hempstead School District’s “Summer Reading List,” which included such literary classics as The Great Gypsy, The Canterbury Tale and The Lovely Bone, as well as works by such esteemed authors as Charlotte Bonte (Jane Eyre) and George Ornell (Animal Farm). As many newspapers and social media sites jumped all over the errors, the sense of irony was overwhelming – a

document designed to promote literacy among the youth, seemingly put together by someone who could have used a couple more years fine-tuning his/her English skills… and this generated by one of the poorest performing districts on Long Island. Perhaps it was merely a test to see how many people would pick out the mistakes? And then, just last week came this: a new sign on the Robert Moses Causeway directing drivers to “Jonse” Beach. The sign was hung recently on the southbound side, causing many drivers to do a double take. Clearly, most residents can manage to overlook the typo in locating one of the nation’s most popular, landmark beaches – but that’s not the point. Wouldn’t someone glance at such a giant structure before displaying it? Or are massive

roadside signs exempt from the proofreading process? Although, come to think of it, I actually had my own such experience with a misspelled sign back in high school, when the school district commissioned their annual display saluting the year’s Valedictorian, Salutatorian and other such honors. My excitement at seeing my name painted on the giant wooden signs marking both ends of town was slightly marred when we drove by to see the following on graduation morning: Valedictorian ~ Jamie Lee Ryan. Just a word to the wise – the bigger the structure, and the more publicly distributed the document, the more “second looks” (and third, and fourth) any wording should be given. (As I re-read this column one more time!)

Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco congratulated members of the Sheriff’s Youth Reentry Task Force recently at a ceremony in Yaphank. The Task Force, along with the Sheriff’s Youth Tier Initiative, were the recent recipients of a 2013 Achievement Award from the National Association of Counties. DeMarco launched the Task Force and Youth Tier in September of 2011 with the aim to improve outcomes for incarcerated youth and reduce recidivism. The program has seen early success by redirecting many former young inmates onto a new

path in life. Many have obtained employment, and are attending school and college and entering the military. Volunteers from throughout Suffolk’s non-profit, government, educational and business community have all worked together to make the initiative a success. Members of the Task Force include Stony Brook University’s School of Social Welfare, the United Way, Family Service League, Hope House Ministries, Timothy Hill Children’s Ranch, the North Shore Youth Council, the Sunshine Prevention Center, EAC, Inc., Eastern Suffolk

BOCES, the Riverhead School District, LICADD, Maryhaven, Inc., Council for Unity and many others from county government and the non-profit sector. Sheriff DeMarco thanked the task force for their commitment to serving Suffolk County’s troubled youth and for making a difference in their lives: “Together we have made this program a success and each one of you have contributed something that is changing the way these young people will conduct themselves in the future. Thank you for being a positive force in this County.”

Eminent Domain: Friend Or Foe?

Eminent Domain is arguably an attack on the rights of American citizens. It seems unfair that the government can just force a family out of their home. Sure, they offer a small sum of money to cushion the grief, but is it really adequate compensation? Our government claims to buyout the houses at market value, but with the economy in shambles as it is, market value is poor. In my town, on Fire Island, you can refuse the buyout. You can simply say no to the puny sum offered to you. But if you do so, the government reserves the right to just take your house in the event of another disaster. If your

house gets more than fifty percent damaged in the future, you can kiss your home goodbye. After refusing this buyout, your insurance rates would skyrocket. You would not be able to get flood insurance. Would it even be worth staying? The economic toll that this refusal would have on the future market value of your house is astounding. Why is this fair? Why do we accept the fact that the government controls this facet of our lives? Some of the members of my town are doing everything we can to make sure our homes stay intact through the winter. We are dropping thousands

of dollars on “trap bags,” which promise to naturally build up a dune and protect our little town. Beach Scraping is also an option, albeit a short-term solution. These small scale projects are doubtfully going to give us adequate protection from Mother Nature. In actuality, we do not need this protection from the elements; we need it from the government. When my mother came to America thirty-five years ago, she was not expecting to be at the mercy of the government, she was expecting total freedom. Eminent Domain contradicts those freedoms promised to us all.

On August 5th, approximately 60 swimmers and kayakers took part in the 10th Annual Distant Memories Swim. The swim was spearheaded by Bryan Proctor, a Huntington resident who started the swim as a way to raise money for Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. and to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s Disease. This issue is very close to Mr. Proctor, as his grandfather and aunt passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease. The participants started out at Asharoken Beach and swam across the bay to Knollwood Beach in Centerport — a distance of 2.5 nautical miles (approximately three miles). The first swimmer in was Bill Van Nostrand of East Setauket with a time of 1 hour, 3 minutes. Before taking the water, each participant gave the names of relatives they were swimming for who suffer from or passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease. Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center - which is headquartered in Bay Shore and has a satellite office in Southampton - is the only local Alzheimer’s Disease advocacy and educational facility whose mission is to provide hands-on support and services to families on Long Island and the New York metropolitan area. ADRC works with family members, health care professionals and researchers to ensure quality health care and support to those impacted by Alzheimer’s Disease through care and consultation, information

The Power Of Youth High school and college students from across the globe seeking the opportunity to establish a solid spiritual foundation, develop their leadership skills, and showcase their personal artistic and academic talents will convene upon the School of Mahanaim as it hosts the 3rd International Youth Fellowship (IYF) World Camp in New York from August 18th to 22nd. An estimated 2,000 students from around the U.S. and overseas will travel to Huntington to participate in this special event aimed at addressing current youth problems and developing young people into leaders. “We’re very excited to welcome the students who are traveling to visit with us from all over the world and have created an exciting program for them,” explains Glen Heil, IYF Public Relations Officer. “The IYF program is designed to help participating students develop essential and effective leadership skills though a comprehensive program focused on leadership training, personal development and real life experiences. Students leave the program with a memorable experience, greater global and cultural awareness and a special musical experience that transcends borders. use them to help their communities and make an impact in the world today,” Heil continued. The schedule of events will include educational programs, lectures, cultural activities, and team building. IYF World Camp will also have special guest

Ronald McDonald Family Room Opened Kim and John Ragone of Manorville haven’t felt a sense of normalcy in their lives since their 17-year-old daughter Rachel was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare disease in which cancer cells are found in bone or in soft tissue. But with the opening of the new Ronald McDonald Family Room at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, they have found a place to relax during their daughter’s frequent hospitalizations. “The room will be a blessing for my family,” Kim Ragone said during ribbon-cutting festivities on August 1st. “This gives us a sense of normalcy, and something as simple as having this dining table to eat at will never be taken for granted…. The living space here gives parents a place to feel comfortable and still be there to support their child.” Stony Brook Children’s partnered with the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island (RMH-LI) to develop the Family Room Program, a family-friendly respite area located on the 11th floor of the hospital. As Suffolk County’s only children’s hospital, Stony Brook Children’s serves a population of 1.5 million. The room will provide support for families of more than 7,000 children who are hospitalized each year at Stony Brook Children’s, helping to alleviate their anxiety of having a child in the hospital by keeping them close to their child’s bedside. “We look forward to today’s events as just the first step in a long-term relationship with the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island, as we continue to grow Stony

Robotic Skills Demo On July 26th, campers at School-Business Partnerships of Long Island’s FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Summer Day Camp demonstrated their robot performance skills for family members at Dowling College in Oakdale, which hosted the camp for the second year in a row. Over a five-day period, students learned how to build, operate, and program a robot to perform certain tasks. That knowledge was put to good use, when they demonstrated to family members what they learned over the course of a week. Elementary and middle school-aged children built and programmed robots with LEGO pieces and moving parts, while high school students displayed their 120-pound robot. There was a sharp increase in enrollment from 16 campers last year to 53 this year, due to the children’s growing interest in SBPLI’s FIRST LEGO League (FLL) and FIRST Robotics Competition programs. These programs will ultimately create an educated workforce for Long Island, by opening the minds and students to career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

the presentation. “Caring for and working with horses is a viable career path. My interest in horses began at the age of four. I went to college and had a career in modeling but I ultimately opted to own and operate The Little Red Barn because I have a love for horses and animals. Sharing information and doing the presentation was as much an opportunity for me as it hopefully was for the students.”
