The Importance Of Free Play The National Education Association notes that recess and free play are critical to the development of students in grades pre-K through eighth grade. According to the NEA, recess and free play during the school day encourages interpersonal interactions and problem-solving skills, and such opportunities also can prove beneficial for older students. Despite these benefits, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that 40 percent of schools have reduced

or eliminated recess over the last 20 years in an attempt to increase instructional time for students. While that may be understandable, it ignores the many benefits of recess and free play, which the American Academy of Pediatrics says are crucial to students’ mental, emotional, physical, and social development. In addition, the AAP notes that research has shown a connection between recess/free play and improved performance in the classroom. This is true even for older

students, including high schoolers. Regular breaks from the rigors of the classroom provide adolescent students with opportunities to mentally decompress, potentially improving their focus when classroom sessions resume. Such benefits highlight the important role of free play in the development of students, including older students whose school schedules may no longer include time for free play or recess.

Two members of the Port Jefferson School District’s Board of Education – one newly elected trustee and one reelected incumbent – took the oath of office at the annual reorganization meeting on July 14, which was held virtually.

David Keegan and Dr. Ravi Singh each raised their right hand and swore the oath administered by District Clerk Kathy Hanley to each commence a three-year term as trustees. The board reinstalled

Ellen Boehm as president and reelected to appoint Tracy Zamek as vice president. Boehm then swore in Hanley as district clerk for the board of education for the 2020-21 school year.

Shopping Behaviors May Be Altered Due To Concerns About The COVID-19 Virus

A recent survey from the cloud-based voice and analytic supply chain solutions provider Voxware found that consumers were planning to change their approach to holiday shopping as early as August. The survey, which included 500 consumers in the United States and sought to determine how holiday shopping behaviors may be altered due to concerns about the COVID-19 virus, found that 76 percent of respondents intend to purchase more than half of their gifts online in 2020. With that in mind, small business owners can work to build up their e-commerce and delivery capabilities so they are in position to capitalize on a retail season that, while different, can still prove lucrative. In honor of our retro-themed newspaper issue, I decided to spotlight an older article I wrote last year. The article is below: Rebuilding Together L o n g Island is a non-profit 5 0 1 ( c ) ( 3 ) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with disabilities and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economically-disadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons).

Together Long Island has become a well-regarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. They need your help to keep up the momentum! There are a few main ways you can get involved with their organization:

1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. With soldout showings, MOVIE LOT confirmed that Long Islanders are ready for a fun and safe way to embrace summer recreation as shelter-inplace restrictions loosen. While drive-in theaters are staging a comeback across the country, Starfish Junction is

positioning itself as one of the leaders here on Long Island. Future showings will include movies perfect for date nights, family fun nights, girl’s night out, sing-alongs, and classic films. There are a limited number of tickets available for each showing. Tickets are on sale now ($40 per carload) and must be purchased online in advance at the MOVIE LOT website to adhere to the promise of contactless processing. Ticketholders are permitted to bring their own food and snacks to enjoy during the show. Attendees may also consider Smith Haven Mall restaurants for curbside pick up before filing into the lot for the movie. Portable restrooms will be available for use. Three Village Historical Virtual Storytelling Bench Tour Gather around our virtual bench, and listen to the stories from the people who once lived in the Three Village Area The Three Village Historical Society is featuring free, three to five minute tales and stories about less known individuals who once lived in Setauket, East Setauket and Stony Brook. For example, many stories have been told about the members of the Culper Spy Ring, but not many have heard the story of Zachariah Greene, who served in the American Revolution and later became pastor of the Setauket Presbyterian Church. Zachariah and other individuals have

made an impact on our history, but not many know their stories. Join us for a series of storytelling from benches around the Three Village area and step back in time with us. As students are set to return to campus for the Fall 2020 semester, Stony Brook University is ensuring that its campus community is coming back safe and strong. Each resident student must complete a COVID-19 PCR test within 14 days of their move-in date, produce a negative result, and submit this negative test result on the day of move-in. The test result, either on letterhead or an electronic copy from a medical provider/ testing center, must state the student’s name, the date of the test (within 14 days of move-in), and must have a negative result. Additionally, students are urged to remain at home in self-quarantine after receiving their tests and are also asked to follow facial covering and physical distancing requirements. Students who have already had and recovered from COVID-19 will be asked to bring a medical clearance in writing from their medical practitioner that was written within 10 days of moving onto campus. New York State has imposed a 14-day self-quarantine for any travelers coming to New York from outside the United States or from a state inside the United States that requires a New York State imposed “stay at home” period in response to increased rates of COVID-19 transmission. Our student body has been notified on a number of occasions about these requirements. For students who qualify, Stony Brook is making available free of charge — including meal delivery — 226 quarantine-safe accommodations on its West Campus and on its Southampton campus.

Qualifying students are invited to come to campus 14 days prior to the start of the semester, beginning August 10. At the conclusion of the quarantine period, students will move to their fall room assignment. Commuter students will be required to use the University’s online health screener before coming to Stony Brook’s campus every day, which measures temperature and

Many universities including Stony Brook University are moving forward with new instruction models as well as new safety precautions to help keep students and staff safe from the novel coronavirus. As we move forward in this new reality, Dr. Sharon Nachman, Chief of the Division of Pediatric

Infectious Diseases at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, has a few practical tips that may make the transition easier. Staying healthy is key. If you are feeling sick, get evaluated. COVID is only one of the illnesses we expect to see on the college campus. Other respiratory infections can occur, as can other medical problems! It’s better to get checked out than to pass COVID to family, people in

your dorm, or classroom. Masks work. Wear them! They can also be a fashion statement. Use them to express yourself! Keeping hands clean with either soap and water or with sanitizer works. You will need to work harder to meet people, make friends and find others who are interested in the same things that you are, since many of the regular avenues to meet people will be

missing or different from the past. How far is too close? If you can reach out and your friend can reach out and your fingers touch-you are too close. While not a perfect assessment, it’s pretty good for measuring how far to stand from each other. “Your college experience will be different, not better, not worse, but different,” says Dr. Nachman. “Remember the new
