Brinkley Smithers Golf Invitational Monday and brought in more than $200,000 to support its lifesaving substance abuse prevention programs and comprehensive addiction services. More than 100 golfers teed-off at The Creek in Locust Valley where 200 dinner guests gathered in support of LICADD. A First Impression, Again By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Say what you will about the drawbacks of social media, the tendency to over-share, the impersonal nature of “connecting” remotely, but, sometimes, such an avenue can prove vital in reconnecting with those we may have crossed paths with in a previous stage of life. Such has been the case through the years, as Facebook “friends” have accumulated faster than my ability to keep up with them, at least in any sort of personal, meaningful way. What began as an attempt

to build a somewhat professional network of contacts in the journalism industry quickly morphed into an avalanche of high school and college friends, fellow dance students and work colleagues. Somehow lost in the mix were those old acquaintances that you, quite simply, just never got to know well enough to develop any sort of deeper friendship. You may have traveled in neighboring circles, shared common life experiences, but failed to make the leap beyond the preconceived notions that often cloud our youth.

First impressions last a lifetime, or so they say; but the advantage of adulthood is that, sometimes, we have the presence of mind to take a step back, take stock of the situation and reevaluate. Such is one of the benefits of social media – second chances. The opportunity to get to know someone, truly, is a rare gift that should be accepted, and savored. So the next time you’re on Facebook, take a closer look at the hundreds of profile pictures staring back at you. You just never know whom you might meet… again.

The American Red Cross is facing a looming shortage of the blood types most needed by patients and is calling on eligible donors with O negative, B negative and A negative blood to give now to prevent an emergency situation. Blood donation appointments can be quickly and easily scheduled by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood. org or calling 1.800.RED CROSS. Overall blood donations in the Red Cross New York-Penn Blood Services Region have been approximately 3,876 fewer per month in June and July this year than the previous 10 months of the year. When demand for the most needed types begins to outpace donations, the Red Cross alerts donors to help restock the shelves. Type O negative is the universal blood type and can be transfused to patients with any blood type. Types B negative and A negative can be transfused to Rh positive or negative patients. Eligible donors are encouraged to donate double red cells – a process where two units of red cells are collected while most of the plasma and platelets are returned to the donor – where available. “Summer blood shortages are not uncommon, but they can be prevented when generous volunteers roll up their sleeves to help save lives,” said Nick Gehrig, senior communications director, Red Cross Blood Services. “Many donors have already given this summer. We’re now asking donors who haven’t donated, and those who are eligible again, to make an appointment to give now to help ensure blood products are available for patients.” Platelets and type AB plasma also needed Platelet donors and those with type AB blood

are also continually needed to help ensure patients receive the lifesaving blood products they need. Platelets – a key clotting component of blood often needed by cancer patients, surgical patients and bone narrow recipients – must be transfused within five days of donation, so donations are constantly needed. Donors with type AB blood are urged to give blood or platelets to restock the plasma supply. Type AB donors have the universal plasma type, which can be given to patients of all blood types. Individuals who donated blood earlier this summer may be eligible to donate again and help patients like an expectant mother at a Red Cross-supported hospital who is currently receiving nearly 100 units of blood products a week until she delivers. Her need alone could add up to 1,100 units. How to donate blood The free Blood Donor App – available in app stores by searching for American Red Cross or by texting BLOODAPP to 90999 – not only makes appointment scheduling easy, but donors can also access their digital donor card and be notified when their donation is distributed to a hospital. Donors can also visit redcrossblood. org or call 1.800.RED CROSS (1.800.733.2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. About the American Red

At water’s edge, A lone tree stands rooted solid. Its limbs spread up and over Like arms curved in ballet position, Tips stretch gently bowing to its left Yielding in syncopation with the fancies of the wind. Behind the tree, the bay stretches wide, Like bands of elastic expanding, swelling, connecting land to sea. This solitary tree is abandoned; No bird occupies a branch Or huddles underneath its sparse stems for shelter. All alone in its secluded posture it remains, With only the visiting clouds illuminating its background; Preparing their descent into dusk, Allowing filaments of egg blue sky to filter through, Igniting the landscape in luminous rosy gilded hues. Sun’s departing rays now cast a shadow of day ending. Earth, sea and sky nurture its majesty; Secluded, secure in its singularity, Yet never alone within nature’s element.

Caregiver Workshop

FUNDING DISCUSSED - Rep. Pete King recently met with members of the Long Island Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society to discuss additional funding for MS research. Congressman King, a member of the Congressional Multiple Sclerosis Caucus, has consistently called for increased funding and also supports legislation requiring the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to track the incidence and prevalence of neurological diseases including MS.

Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism on Long Island, will be holding a workshop tailored to equip professionals with an understanding of the skills needed to ensure a therapeutic response to behavioral challenges. The workshop, Challenging Behaviors: Responding Effectively, will be held on Saturday, September 26th, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the lecture hall at DDI’s Hollywood Drive campus. “Too often people who work with vulnerable populations such as individuals with developmental disabilities,

are not fully prepared to handle challenging behaviors from the individuals they serve,” commented Michael Romas PhD, Coordinator of Training and Professional Development for DDI. “By emphasizing the use of Applied Behavior Analysis, this workshop will provide a combination of both didactic and interactive training opportunities.” Attendees can expect to learn the importance of understanding developmental milestones when addressing behaviors. In addition, they will be able to identify simple functions in terms of M.E.A.T.S (acronym for the five principles

functions of behavior) and how to implement basic behavior strategies to decrease incidence of problem behavior, as well as so much more. Speech/ Language Professionals will receive .35 ASHA CEUs and Physical Therapists participants will receive 4.2 contact hours. The workshop will be held at DDI’s Hollywood Drive campus located at 99 Hollywood Drive in Smithtown. The registration fee is $75. Walk for Beauty The Ward Melville Heritage Organization will once again host the Annual Walk for Beauty, in a Beautiful Place on Sunday, October 25th, in picturesque Stony Brook Village. Nation Night Out Against crime was hosted at Target in Commack last Tuesday evening. This was a gathering for the community to come out and meet their local law enforcement officers, as well as armed services and fire personnel. Legislator Leslie Kennedy ame out to support this effort to help law enforcement officers work more efficiently with and for the community

they serve. It was a family friendly night complete with a bounce house, a dunk tank, and finger printing for the kids. It was an excellent opportunity for the youth of the community to meet with the officers charged with protecting our safety in Suffolk County and abroad. Leslie Kennedy met with members of the Suffolk County Police Department,

Suffolk county Fire Rescue, as well as the Police Explorers, a program for the youth interested in law enforcement. “I think this is a great idea, the community and the police force need to work together to prevent crime, and our children need to know that the police are here to help them.” said Leslie Kennedy.

Artists Announced

Eastern Suffolk BOCES adult nursing students received training from Senior Public Health Educator John Martin and Clinical Nurse Practitioner Laura Giardino on how to recognize an opioid overdose, administer intranasal NARCAN, and what steps to take until EMS arrive. At the conclusion of the training, each nursing student received a certificate of completion and an emergency resuscitation kit that included NARCAN. NARCAN is an opioid antagonist that prevents or reverses the effects of opioids. Program Administrator for Health Sciences Debra Epilone, R.N., said, “This was an important training opportunity for our nursing students to

learn how to administer NARCAN. As future nurses and community members, having this knowledge empowers them to save a life. This is a very important initiative.” NARCAN is not a treatment. “It is a second chance drug. It can save a person who has overdosed on an opiate a chance to live one more day,” said John Martin. In January of 2015, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone unveiled more initiatives to fight heroin and opiate overdoses. An awareness program was unveiled that targeted users in the Suffolk County court system who were saved by NARCAN. “It’s an epidemic. That’s why EMS, Suffolk County First Responders,

and police officers are all trained to administer NARCAN,” said John Martin. With New York State funds and training provided through the New York State Department of Emergency Medical Health Education, community members also have the opportunity to be trained. Martin added, “Every overdose is someone’s mother, father, daughter, or son. The training takes about an hour, the admission of the drug is through a mucosal atomization device (MAD), and there are no side effects at all.” Carla Bonilla, a second year nursing student from Brentwood, comes from a family of nurses. She said, “I feel that with this knowledge, I could save someone’s life.”

Awareness Walk North Shore-LIJ’s Brain Aneurysm Center, along with the Brain Aneurysm Foundation (BAF), will host Long Island’s Seventh Annual Brain Aneurysm Awareness Four-Mile Fun Run/Two-Mile Walk at Jones Beach State Park on Saturday, September 26th, at 10 a.m., rain or shine, to promote awareness and education. Proceeds from the walk

will benefit North ShoreLIJ’s Brain Aneurysm Center and the BAF to support essential research that may directly benefit those affected and help to reduce the incidence of ruptured aneurysms. Registration for the walk begins at 8:30 a.m. at Jones Beach State Park, Field 5. From now until September 12th, the registration fee is $25. After September 12th,

Prior to his years as an administrator, he began his educational career as a secondary social studies teacher in the Babylon School District. Dr. Neidig holds a bachelor’s degree in secondary education with a concentration in social studies from the University of Scranton, two master’s degrees – one in liberal studies and another in school district administration – from Stony Brook University, and an educational doctorate in educational administration from Dowling College. He will begin his new role in Port Jefferson on Aug. 17. Jodi Cahill will begin her tenure as director of special education on Aug. 10. She joins the Royal family from the Brentwood School District, where she began her career in education and has worked for 20 years. Since 2002, Cahill served as Brentwood’s department head for speech and hearing, as well as chairperson for the district’s Committee on Special Education. She coordinated the implementation of Individualized Education Programs for approximately 1,000 students in grades pre-K through 12 receiving speech therapy, created and implemented professional development programs for department staff and

supervised 24 speech language pathologists. Cahill holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in speech language pathology from SUNY Cortland and LIU Post, respectively, and certification as a school district administrator from Stony Brook University. Claudia Smith will replace Christine Austen, who was appointed as high school principal, in a restructured position as pre-K-8 assistant principal, working with both the staff and students at Edna Louise Spear Elementary School and Port Jefferson Middle School. Smith joins Port Jefferson from the Middle Country Central School District, where she worked as a regular and integrated elementary school teacher for 18 years. As a classroom teacher, she consistently differentiated instruction to meet the needs of all students, utilized both qualitative and quantitative means of assessment, and prepared students to master formal assessments through the use of curricula aligned to the Common Core Learning Standards. Smith holds a bachelor’s degree in child studies (pre-K-6) from St. Joseph’s College, a master’s degree in reading, language and cognition (K-12), and professional diplomas in school district and school building leadership from Dowling College.

Join Actor and local resident Ralph Macchio and Port Jefferson native and CBS 2 News Anchor Maurice Dubois for the Sixth Annual Village Cup Regatta on Saturday, September 12th. Presented by the Setauket Yacht Club, the friendly competition between John T. Mather Memorial Hospital and the Village of Port Jefferson raises funds for Mather’s Palliative Medicine Program and The Lustgarten Foundation, which funds pancreatic cancer research. The event has raised more than $235,000 for the two organizations. Macchio will act as Ambassador for the Regatta for the third year to help publicize the important work of the two programs it funds. Macchio’s wife, Phyllis, is a nurse practitioner in Mather’s Palliative Medicine Program. Also joining the Regatta this year as an Ambassador is award-winning journalist Maurice Dubois, who co-anchors CBS 2 News in New York at 5 and 11 weekdays with Kristine

Johnson. Dubois is a graduate of Port Jefferson High School. The Regatta consists of Yacht Club-skippered sailboats divided into two teams representing Mather Hospital and the Village of Port Jefferson. Employees from the Hospital and Village help crew the boats, which race in one of three classes based on boat size. The festivities begin in Harborfront Park at 10 am with WALK 97.5 supplying the music. Regatta t-shirts designed by a local artist, and signed by Macchio will be available for purchase as well as the event’s commemorative t-shirts and hats. The Memorial Parade of Boats begins at 11 am at the PJ Village dock. All sailboats participating in the Regatta will pass by the park dressed in banners and nautical flags. Following the Regatta, a celebratory Captain’s Party and presentation of the Village Cup will take place in a restored 1917 shipyard building that now serves as the Port Jefferson Village Center. The Cup is currently held by Mather Hospital. The Village had won three of the previous

four Regattas. Bad weather forced the cancellation of the 2012 race. The event is catered compliments of Schafer’s Port Jefferson restaurant and the Port Jefferson Brewing Company. The American Heart Association relies on volunteers to help make sure the day is picture perfect. They are looking for volunteers to

help at this year’s Long Island Heart Walk event on Sunday, September 20, 2015 at Jones Beach. There are lots of jobs to do and lots of people needed to do it. Volunteer positions include day before event set up, day of event set up, registration, helping in the food tent (morning and afternoon), route rally, water station, finish line cheer squad and event clean up. As the top fundraising team for the event, the 52 riders on Team Dignity raised $97,860 for the American Diabetes Association. Distant Memories Swim

On July 28th, more than 20 swimmers and kayakers took part in the 12th Annual Distant Memories Swim. Bryan Proctor, a Huntington resident who started the swim as a way to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center,

Inc. (ADRC) and awareness about the disease, spearheaded the swim. This issue is very close to Mr. Proctor, as his grandfather and aunt passed away from Alzheimer’s disease. The participants started out at Asharoken Beach and

swam across the Northport Bay to Knollwood Beach in Huntington - a distance of approximately three miles. Before taking to the water, Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer, ADRC and Mr. Proctor thanked

the participants for their support in fighting this insidious disease. The first swimmer to complete the course was Andrea O’Brien, who finished in just over an hour. “This year’s swim signifies a very strong commitment to our cause by all of these men and women, many of whom have been touched by Alzheimer’s,” Ms. MalackRagona said. “Sadly, the number of individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease continues to grow. Demand for training, programs, services and referral sources is at an all-time high. This group of dedicated individuals helps to create awareness
