The Port Jefferson girls varsity tennis team and girls varsity field hockey team will both have a different look on the sidelines this fall. Drew Dunleavy will lead the girls tennis team while Mallory Guerin will lead the field hockey squad.

Coach Dunleavy holds a United States Professional Tennis Association professional tennis certification as well as a United States Tennis Association professional coaching certification. He has experience as a private tennis coach as well as a high school tennis coach, most recently in the Smithtown School District. “Mr. Dunleavy has extensive experience working with students of all ages, including those with disabilities,” Port Jefferson School District Director of Health, Physical Education, Athletics and Nursing Adam Sherrard said. “As a former health, physical education teacher

and athletic director, Mr. Dunleavy understands how to differentiate his instruction to meet the needs of each studentathlete to maximize their potential. His focus on building character and confidence for our studentathletes set him apart from the other candidates.” Coach Dunleavy is excited to keep the girls tennis program moving in the right direction — continuing with the success and enthusiasm that Coach Denis Christofor has established for many years. Due to scheduling conflicts, Christofor will not coach the team this year. “Mr. Christofor helped build the foundation of our tennis program,” Sherrard said. “He has been a tremendous asset to the athletic program and an advocate for tennis throughout the district. He has met with Coach Dunleavy multiple times to help with a smooth and successful transition.” An Earl L. Vandermeulen High School alumna, Mallory Guerin received All-Long Island and All-State honors while helping lead the team to four Suffolk County Class C championships, three Long Island Championships and two appearances in the State tournament. Coach Guerin continued her field hockey career at SUNY Cortland, where she was member of the Red Dragons women’s field hockey

A volunteer coach for the Royals in 2014, she moved on to be an assistant field hockey coach at both the high school and college level. “We are excited for the energy and innovative ideas Miss Guerin will bring to the program,” Sherrard said. “She has facilitated many clinics for student-athletes in grades K-12 including the Long Island Field Hockey program. These are the things we need to keep the field hockey program growing and moving in the right direction.” Guerin will take the reins from long-time coach Debbie EdgarBrown, who has retired from coaching. She and former Port Jefferson coach Nancy Gallagher played key roles in the search for a new coach and are eager to volunteer their time to help the team in the upcoming season.

Monday, August 10th, 4:00 p.m. The History of the American Slave Ship Wanderer and Her Enslaved People In spite of the fact that in 1808, Federal law prohibited the importation of slaves in the United States, the beautifully appointed schooner yacht Wanderer

brought approximately 400 enslaved men, women, and children from the west coast of Africa to the slave state of Georgia in November, 1858, just three years before the American Civil War (1861-1865). The details of this tragic event where more than 80 Africans died during the approximately month and-a-half voyage and those that arrived sick, emaciated and desperate, were quickly sold into the system. This program will be followed by a brief question and answer period. The program will be presented by Three Village Historical Society Historian, Bev Tyler.

In honor of our retro-themed newspaper issue, I decided to spotlight an older article I wrote last year. The article is below and is about an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors.

They have rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters in 28 years! The amazing impact that Long Island Waterways sees from the work of Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is something each of us should be thankful for! Joanne and Al Grover started Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. in 1990. 2019 is their 29th year of cleaning up our bays, beaches and waterways. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. has grown from 1 person to several thousand concerned members in 7 chapters dotted all along Long Island’s South Shore. This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, OceanBay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more. They have 7 boats that go out in our waterways to patrol and pickup trash and debris between March and November. All of the boats are operated by volunteer captains and crews that give their time to go out on clean-up trips. Clean-up trips usually last about 3 hours. After their boats are taken out of the water for the season, they bring them back to their Freeport headquarters and immediately start to work on them to get them ready for the next season.

Rocky Point School District Welcomes Three New Administrators

The Rocky Point School District welcomes three new administrators to the district. Scott Bullis is the new principal at Joseph A. Edgar Intermediate School. He takes over for Linda Murphy, who served in the position for eight years and retired in June. Jason Westerlund is the new principal and Linda Greening is the new assistant principal at Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School. Westerlund replaces Dr. Virginia Gibbons, who served as principal for nine years. Greening will serve in the position vacated by Vivien Leary, who served as interim assistant principal for five years. The trio will officially join the administrative team on July 1, 2020. Scott Bullis joins Rocky Point from his most recent position as principal at School 5 in Oceanside, and prior to that he served as principal at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in Amityville. He earned an undergraduate degree in elementary education from St. Joseph’s College and a Master of Arts in literacy/reading from Long Island University. He also earned administrative certifications in school building leadership, school district leadership and school administrator supervision from The

College of Saint Rose. His extensive skills include student-focused educational leadership, teambuilding, curriculum and budget development, teaching, mentoring and school security and safety. Bullis live in Ronkonkoma. Linda Greening joins Rocky Point from her most recent leadership roles within the Center Moriches School District. She served as the assistant principal at Clayton Huey Elementary School before becoming the assistant principal at the middle school, while also serving as the K-12 director of guidance since 2017. She was a classroom teacher for 12 years. She began her teaching career at P.S. 23 in the Bronx, where she taught first grade. She then taught at Tamarac Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District, where she also filled various leadership roles as a teacher leader and principal’s aide. Greening holds a Bachelors of Arts and Master of Science degree from University of Mary Washington, and an advanced graduate certificate in educational leadership from Stony Brook University. She lives in Center Moriches. Jason Westerlund returns to the community after 18 years away. He

graduated from Miller Place High School before earning a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education and teaching from Wagner College, a Master of Science degree in elementary education from Walden University and an educational leadership advanced certificate from Stony Brook University. He taught at PS 101 for 14 years, where he served on the School Leadership Team as the data specialist and the math lead teacher. He was selected and served as a Senior Math Common Core Fellow for New York City, where he received intensive training and provided professional development to deepen teacher capacity across New York City. Westerlund then served as the assistant principal at PS 144 for four years, where he led professional development activities centered on targeted small-group instruction to raise the student level of reading across the school. He also led a series of professional development activities to support teachers in building a deeper knowledge of mathematics and best practices and helped to create and grow socialemotional curriculum for staff, students and families. Westerlund lives in East Setauket.

3 Tips To Planning Efficient Home-Cooked Meals

A few generations ago, dining out was an experience reserved for special occasions. However, until recently, when restaurants were shuttered in the wake of the public health crisis prompted by the spread of COVID-19, many people were dining out multiple times a week. Hospitality solutions provider Fourth surveyed 1,000 American adults in 2019 and 56 percent reported dining out at least two to three times per week. Ten percent said they ate out four to six times each week, while 6 percent said they dined out everyday. People accustomed to relying on restaurant for meals multiple times per week may be unaccustomed to cooking many meals at home, which has become the norm thanks to restrictions placed on restaurants and other food-related businesses as part of COVID-19 social distancing precautions. Learning how to shop for food and prepare items by maximizing available ingredients can reduce

trips to the store and help people reduce food waste at a time when food is not as readily available as it once was. 1. Plan meals/browse circulars Meal planning and shopping lists are vital tools for people preparing meals at home. Without doing so, individuals can be left floundering in the supermarket, spending more money than necessary and making impulse purchases (all the while forgetting items they truly need). Use sales circulars to browse weekly discounted items at stores. Build a week’s worth of meals off of these sale items — going so far as to write out a cursory menu — then fill in any extra ingredients or staples needed on a shopping list. Leave a day or two for leftovers. Try organizing the list to follow the natural layout where items are arranged in the store.
