Manor in Shelter Island and more. One home of particular interest is The Homestead in Nissequogue. The house was originally owned by Ebenezer Smith, the grandson of Richard “Bull” Smith, the founder of Smithtown. It was built along Long Island Sound. The house has been in the family for centuries, and various family members have added rooms, extensions and a wraparound porch. In the early 1900s it was sold to someone outside of the family. Owned once again by the Smith family, the home is currently being sold. In an interview with Architectural Digest, Mr. Marshall explained that his research process entailed visits by foot, bike and car or, in one case, subway, to

Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers

behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

Rocky Point High School Named School Of Distinction 13 Section XI schools in Suffolk County and one of only 64 in New York State to earn the honor. Rocky Point was recognized for having all of its varsity teams qualify for and receive the ScholarAthlete team award during their respective sports seasons. To qualify, every varsity team must have

75% or more of its studentathletes earn an average of 90 or higher. A certificate and commemorative award will be presented to the school by the executive director of NYSPHSAA at the organization’s annual athletic eligibility workshop in October.

Earl L. Vandermeulen High School was one of only 11 Suffolk County Section XI schools named a 2020-21 Scholar-Athlete School of Excellence by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association. The accolade honors varsity coaches in their commitment to challenging student-athletes to achieve a statewide recognition.

To earn the School of Excellence Award, 75% of the high school’s 21 varsity teams qualified and received the NYSPHSAA ScholarAthlete team award, which was established in the 1991-92 school year. The School of Excellence Award commenced in 2016. The honor is a testament to the continued efforts of Port Jefferson’s student-

athletes and varsity coaches, who, in addition to the teamwork that is instilled on the playing fields and courts, place an important value on academics. Mr. Adam Sherrard, the district’s director of health, physical education and athletics, will be presented with a plaque at the local athletic director workshop in the fall.

A Winning Pair: Stony Brook Medicine Names Pet Therapy Team 2020 Volunteer of the Year

There’s a new top dog of Stony Brook University Hospital’s volunteer program. Stony Brook Medicine has awarded Pet Therapy Team Doreen Monteleone and her seven-year-old Labrador partner Molly the 2020 Volunteers of the Year. Doreen and Molly, from West Sayville, joined the hospital volunteer program in March of 2019 and together have donated nearly 200 hours of service since. Molly came to Stony Brook with an already impressive resume. She is certified by Therapy Dogs International (TDI) and is recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) as a Therapy Dog (THD) for her work over the past several years. Besides her visits at Stony Brook University Hospital, Molly is a reading companion for children at a library. Molly is also highly skilled in scent detection. She competes in events that showcase skills similar to bomb or narcotics detection and is currently trialing at the elite level with the National Association of Canine Scent Work (NACSW). Through AKC, Molly earned obedience titles Beginner Novice (BN) and Companion Dog (CD); and has one leg on her Companion Dog Excellent (CDX) title. AKC has also awarded her the Trick Dog Advanced (TDA), Canine Good Citizen (CGC), AKC Temperament Test (ATT) and Farm Dog Certified (FDC) titles. Before the pandemic, Doreen and Molly engaged in hospital visits primarily involving Stony Brook’s geriatric patients. Regular visits were arranged by Carolyn O’Neill, NICHE (Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders), Elder Life Coordinator and Geriatric Educator at Stony Brook Medicine. “I have heard countless stories on how visits from Molly and Doreen have greatly benefited our patients,” says O’Neill. “Molly has brought so much cheer

to those who need it and she has touched the hearts of many at Stony Brook.” Doreen recalls one patient who had a profound reaction to one of Molly’s visits. After having a stroke, a woman would not talk to anyone. That was until Molly came to see her. After the four-legged volunteer left, the patient’s nurse asked, “What did you think of Molly?” The patient responded, “I love that dog!” When COVID-19 suspended Volunteer services and in-person visits, Pia York, Therapeutic Intervention Coordinator at Stony Brook Medicine, took the lead to bring virtual Pet Therapy visits to staff. Rounding with an iPad, Pia with help from recreation therapists Chris Brigante, Diane Dignon and Casey Carrick, visited various units bringing tale wags, virtual kisses and tricks to help relieve the stress. They virtually visited every area of the hospital from the pharmacy on the first floor to the 19th floor. During these visits, Molly became a celebrity. Her name was mentioned hospitalwide and requests for visits increased ten-fold. In addition to visits, Doreen and Molly

creatively used photos to help emphasize the importance of social distancing, proper mask wearing, and hand washing to name a few. Some were even written in Spanish. The photos also contained various inspirational messages for Stony Brook staff as they worked tirelessly to care for patients during the height of the pandemic. Doreen says she simply wants to share the special joy Molly brings. “She always puts a smile on my face and makes me laugh. Patients and staff would often say that Molly made their day,” says Doreen. “When the COVID crisis hit, I thought about the enormous stress and uncertainty at the hospital. Continuing our visits remotely to raise spirits was the least I could do.” Molly is also a bit of a celebrity outside of Stony Brook. She can be seen running with a little girl at the end of the current Primatene Mist commercial. Port Jefferson Appoints Assistant Superintendent For Curriculum And Instruction faculty members, students and families. His commitment to academics and leadership in the building resulted in a realignment of the school’s mathematics curriculum, the creation of a coding program, a library makerspace and a mindfulness program. Dr. Neidig worked closely with the Rotary Club of Port Jefferson honoring the “Most Motivated Student” monthly awards. Partnering with SEPTA, he also successfully launched the “Royal Gaming” club

with students. Beyond the middle school, Dr. Neidig has taken on districtwide responsibilities including English as a New Language coordinator and the social and emotional reopening committee chairperson. Dr. Neidig is part of the professional development committee, the equity team and the district safety team. Dr. Neidig holds a bachelor’s degree in secondary education with a concentration in social studies from the

University of Scranton, a master’s degree in liberal studies and a master’s degree in school district administration from Stony Brook University, and an educational doctorate in educational administration from Dowling College. Before joining the Port Jefferson School District, he was assistant principal of North Country Road Middle School in the Miller Place School District. Prior to his years as an administrator, he began his educational career as a secondary

social studies teacher in the Babylon School District. “We are so pleased to welcome Dr. Neidig to this role,” said Superintendent of Schools Jessica Schmettan. “His current commitment to our school community is evident as we continue to provide a personalized, rigorous educational program. Hold On To That Balloon! PSEG Long Island Cautions That Metallic Balloons Can Be Hazardous The next few months are filled with special events that are often celebrated with Mylar balloons. PSEG Long Island is reminding customers that balloons released into the air can become entangled in overhead electric equipment and cause a host of problems. “Safety is PSEG Long Island’s No. 1 priority. That’s why we’re cautioning customers to please hold onto their metallic balloons,” said John O’Connell, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Transmission and Distribution Operations. “Though they’re festive, fun and look nice, we want the public to be aware that metallic balloons also conduct electricity. If they get loose and come into contact with a power line or other electrical equipment, that could lead to power outages, fire and, possibly, injuries.” To mitigate these risks, PSEG Long Island encourages the public to follow these safety
