For a quarter of a century, Star Island Yacht Club has been hosting its annual mid-summer sport fishing tournament: the Mako, Thresher & Tuna Tournament. This year’s tournament will take place from August 4th to 5th. With overnight fishing and expanded categories, this will be the most exciting tournament sport fishing enthusiasts and spectators
will see this August on the East End. Prizes will be offered for Heaviest Mako, Heaviest Thresher and Heaviest Tuna. Once again, anglers can also bring in any species of Tuna, including Blue Fin; this gives the participants better odds of bringing in the winning catch. As a result of this expansion last year, Star Island paid out more than
$150,000 in cash and prizes. Back for this year’s tournament is overnight fishing, which will allow participants to stay out overnight, in the event they did not have fish to weigh in for the first day or if they weighed in earlier and wanted to get a head start on Day Two.

Neighbors in Need
On July 20th, Councilman Dan Panico and the Brookhaven Town Board honored Tri-Hamlet resident Bayley Cuomo for lending a compassionate, helping hand
to her neighbors in need. On July 2nd, her next-door neighbor’s house caught fire and the family lost most of their belongings. Bayley, who is 16 years old,
took to Facebook asking for any donations to help the family. Through the July 4th weekend she collected bags of donations including food, clothing, furniture, pet supplies for the family dog and other necessities, including a place for the family to stay. When asked about her generosity, Bayley answered, “It was the right thing to do. You’re supposed to help people who need and deserve help.” Councilman Panico said, “We can all learn a great deal from Bayley’s acts of kindness. She is an amazing young woman who is most deserving of praise and recognition.”

Volunteers Needed
A funny thing happened on my last trip to the beach; rather, several amusingly bizarre things that left my friend and I shaking our heads in bewilderment and wondering if we were, in fact, part of some sort of candid camera exposé. On this particular afternoon, we literally sailed along the Robert Moses Causeway, over all three bridges, and were parked in less than 30 minutes - a record-breaking feat, to be sure, and a far improvement over the recent painstakingly slow bumper-to-bumper expeditions we have had to contend with. Amazed at this fortunate turn of events, we began to unload the car and make our way to the sand, when we noticed the deafening silence. Usually, the beach is filled with the sounds of children laughing and playing, radios blasting a cacophony of musical notes, the waves crashing against the shoreline… but on this particular afternoon, there was only silence. It was as if we had entered a parallel universe, a bubble of tranquility. Once we settled in, I noticed the enormous number of seagulls who seemed to be hovering nearby, taking off and landing a bit too close
for comfort. Just as I was thinking this one particular winged creature appeared to be launching its flight awfully low to the ground, my friend burst into laughter as he barely cleared her head. “He literally just hit me in the head!” she exclaimed. “I just felt his feet running across my hair!” From Candid Camera to Alfred Hitchcock, in a matter of minutes. After an hour or so of baking in the hot sun, we decided to embark on our regular trek toward the Lighthouse in search of seashells, and of course that picture perfect shot of the waves crashing onto the shore. This time, I decided to make it my mission to collect several dozen oyster shells in order to create a heart-shaped work of art in the sand. About one hour, and several ocean wipeouts of my masterpiece later, we decided to head back. Now generally, after a lengthy absence, it is perfectly normal to find our blanket surrounded by new neighbors, or perhaps none, as the beach tends to begin to empty in the late afternoon sun. This time, we were greeted by a man, sitting in a single chair, surrounded by about a half dozen assorted beach bags,

coolers and folding chairs - and an umbrella… one giant umbrella, staked right at the edge of my blanket, engulfing our entire area in complete shadow. I contemplated asking him to join us; then settled on politely asking him to move, as I hadn’t come to the beach to share his umbrella. He stared at me blankly, expressionless. Then, without a word, he slowly, deliberately got up and moved his umbrella - about half an inch. Completely bewildered, my friend and I exchanged a look. Was he serious? Were we the only people who understood the concept of personal boundaries? An entire field of sand, and here we were fighting over one square foot of space. Flabbergasted, we decided to gather our things and move slightly up the beach, to a completely empty expanse devoid of rogue umbrellas, seagulls and any other potential pitfalls. As we settled into this new spot, we were startled by the sound of people squealing and turned to see our old area now engulfed by the high tide. And there, in the middle of the surf, sat our old friend and his umbrella.

She looks forward to attending LIU/ C.W. Post College this fall to study accounting with the hopes of becoming a certified accountant at the end of the five-year program. Sophia graduated from Rocky Point High School with a 95.30-weighted average and is a member of the National Honor Society of New York State and the National Math Honor Society of New York State, as well as her school’s Mathematics Team. She also tutors underclassman in Algebra, her favorite
subject. An avid runner, Sophia was a member of the Varsity Cross-County team. In addition to being a stellar student while working part time, Sophia finds time to be involved in her community and is an active participant in the Leadership Group at her church, helping out with various events including their “Safe Halloween” program. She also enjoys the outdoors and camping with her family. “I am extremely grateful and proud to receive this generous scholarship,” said Sophia Chianese. “As a senior heading off to college in the fall, I am excited for the future and aspire to live up to everyone’s expectations, including those of my family, as well as those of my extended King Kullen family.”
Supervisor Romaine and Councilman Michael Loguercio announced today Brookhaven Town’s Division of Veterans Services food drive was so successful that the Town will now hold an annual drive for veterans and their families. The drive was held from June 26th through July 14th and residents and local businesses donated more than 300 bags of food in three weeks. Supervisor Ed Romaine said, “We can always count on Brookhaven residents to come through to help their neighbors in need and our Veteran’s Food Drive is
another example of their generosity. I am happy that the Town will make this an annual event.” Councilman Loguercio said, “Thank you to our Division of Veterans Services for their efforts to help our veterans. They play such an important role in the community by assisting those who have served our country and I encourage any veteran who needs help to call and make an appointment.” The Division of Veterans Services distributed a total of 260 bags of food to veterans who visited the office and worked with
local Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) representatives to distribute the donations directly to veterans and their families. A portion of the donations are being kept at the office of the Division of Veterans Services to distribute on an as needed basis. Back to School Supply Drive
The Town of Brookhaven Youth Bureau’s INTERFACE Back to School Supply Drive will begin on Monday, July 31st and run through Friday, August 28th. Collection centers are located in the lobby of Town Hall at One Independence Hill in Farmingville and the Highway Department Facility located at 1140 Old Town Road in Coram and the Rose Caracappa Senior Center, located at 739 Route 25A in Mt. Sinai. The Youth Bureau is asking for donations of pens, calculators, backpacks, notebooks, lunch boxes, folders, glue, binders and more. King Kullen (Bethpage, NY) announced the names of 64 scholarship recipients during its 27th annual King Kullen Scholarship Awards Program. King Kullen employees at the company’s 32 store locations – and their children 16 years of age or older – are encouraged each year to submit applications for consideration. The top 2017 awardee, Sophia Chianese, received a $2,500 scholarship; 19 King Kullen employees received scholarships of $250 each; and 44 children of King Kullen employees received scholarships of $250 each. “King Kullen is pleased to recognize employees and family members with regard to their academic endeavors and community involvement,” said King Kullen Co-President Brian Cullen. “We congratulate Sophia on being an outstanding student and this year’s grand-prize

Jefferson’s Ferry Life Plan Community Board Member Vivian ViloriaFisher was recently recognized by LeadingAge NY as Trustee of the Year in a ceremony held at Jefferson’s Ferry. LeadingAge NY’s focus is on advocacy, education, and applied research to promote senior services programs that support the overall health and wellbeing of seniors. Daniel Heim, Executive Vice President of LeadingAge NY presented the award to Ms. ViloriaFisher in front of an appreciative gathering of Jefferson’s Ferry residents, staff and fellow members of the Jefferson’s Ferry Board of Directors. Jefferson’s Ferry Board Chair George Rice offered congratulatory remarks as well, and fellow Board Member and local Councilwoman Valerie Cartright presented a proclamation from the Town of Brookhaven. “Vivian ensures that every board meeting is productive. She is thoroughly prepared to discuss every pending issue, with an attention to detail and understanding of the topics that is
immeasurably helpful,” said Mr. Rice. “Jefferson’s Ferry is exceedingly grateful to have a Trustee of her dedication, integrity and professionalism on its Board.” Viloria-Fisher first became involved with Jefferson’s Ferry as a Suffolk County Legislator, regularly attending events ranging from resident and employee recognition ceremonies to fundraisers and presentations. She engaged with as many residents and staff as possible during each visit and was an immediate, avid supporter of Jefferson’s Ferry’s open door policy, level of care, innovative programs and overall high standards. Armed with considerable talent and insight attained through her diverse work experiences from high school teacher to threeterm county legislator, Viloria-Fisher is a tireless advocate for aging services in general and Life Plan Communities in particular, and her ability to identify and connect with the right government officials has done much to forward the Jefferson’s Ferry agenda. “There was no question that I wanted to commit my
experience and skills to the Jefferson’s Ferry mission of promoting dignity, privacy, individuality, and independence for seniors through an environment that values personal fulfillment, caring relationships, and a positive aging experience,” Ms. Viloria-Fisher remarked. While in the Legislature, Viloria Fisher’s staunch advocacy for seniors included transportation, health and nutrition concerns. She secured funds and grants for individuals, home heating assurance programs, and senior centers. Today she co-chairs the Jefferson’s Ferry Advocacy and Public Policy Program, traveling to Washington, D.C. annually to address Capitol Hill on issues important to Life Plan Communities. She also attends LeadingAge state and national conferences and presents the annual NYS Legislative Agenda to the residents. She also serves on the Executive Committee of the Board; Audit and Finance Committee; and Compensation and Nomination Committee of Jefferson’s Ferry.
Mid-Summer Tournament Continued From 2 Although only one shark may be weighed in per day, more than one tuna may be weighed per day, as long as the anglers are in accordance with National Marine Fisheries regulations. Last year, the heaviest shark caught was a 288-pound Mako aboard Capt. Chuck Mallinson’s Joy Sea. Participants and fans will also have the opportunity to learn about these mysterious, sometimes dangerous and often misunderstood species from marine biologists who will be on-site. These marine biologists will be available to comment on the migration habits, predatory nature and the health of the species.
Fishing starts at 6 a.m. on both days and ends on Friday at 6 p.m. and on Saturday at 5 p.m. An awards ceremony will commence at the end of the tournament. Entry fee is $800 per boat. For anglers who would like to get in on the action but do not own a boat, the Star Island Yacht Club Charter Boat fishing fleet is available for hire for one or both days of the tournament. Star Island wishes to advise all prospective participants that, as per Environmental Conservation Law 130338, New York State law now requires that all shark tournament participants use non-stainless steel non-offset circle hooks exclusively. Dockage is available on
a first-come, first-serve basis. Transient rates for the tournament are $6.00 per foot for up to 59 feet, $6.50 per foot for 60 to 84 feet and $7.50 per foot for 85 feet and up. Today’s students arguably have more on their plates than any generation that came before them. But even with their hectic schedules, kids still have free time, which many are not always using in the healthiest ways possible. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly one-third high school students play video games or computer games for three or more hours on an average school day.
Sedentary lifestyles can increase kids’ risk for being overweight or obese, and many parents struggle in their efforts to encourage their school-aged children to get off the couch and embrace physical activities. The following are a handful of strategies concerned parents can employ as they attempt to motivate youngsters to be more physically active. Choose the right activity. Physical activity and organized sports are not one and the same. Kids
can still be physically active even if they are not athletic or if they are simply not interested in sports. Find an activity kids can embrace, such as hiking, swimming or even riding bikes, and they will be more likely to get off the couch. Limit screen time. Kids spend lots of time in front of computer and television screens, which can be detrimental to their overall health. Parents can place restrictions on the amount of time kids are allowed to
spend surfing the Internet, playing video games and watching television, encouraging youngsters to spend time enjoying the great outdoors or playing with friends rather than spending it staring at a screen . Join in the fun. Parents can set positive examples by being physically active and even exercising with their children. Rather than retiring to the couch after dinner, take nightly walks or bike rides as a family. This is a great way to get
kids off the couch, but also a great way to spend more time together as a family. Involve kids in your own pursuits. Parents who are weekend warrior athletes can involve their kids in their own activities. Take kids along on weekend jogs, kayaking trips and so on, all the while explaining the important role physical activity plays in living a healthy lifestyle.

Career Exploration
Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) has shown young teens the importance of testing potential career paths. Each summer, ESBOCES holds its popular Summer Career Exploration Program for students entering 8th, 9th and 10th grades so they can experiment with potential college and career possibilities through two-week, handson introductory courses. This year the program ran from July 10th-21st at the three ESBOCES technical career centers located in Oakdale, Bellport, and Riverhead. Federal and statewide education initiatives focus on ensuring that students leave high school properly prepared for college and adequately equipped to
compete in a demanding global workforce. These courses provide students with an opportunity to explore career interests long before graduation, show them what is required to succeed in those fields, and introduce them to career programs available in grades 11 and 12 through such educational providers as ESBOCES. To be eligible to participate in the Summer Exploration Program, students had to be entering grades 8-10 in the fall of 2017 and be 12 years old by the time the program commenced. Sessions ran Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the ESBOCES career and technical centers in Bellport, Oakdale, and Riverhead.
Course offerings included Culinary Arts and Baking, Automotive Technology, Cosmetology, Basic Pet Care and Training, and Welding. Said Rob Van Brunt, program administrator for Career, Technical, and Adult Education at ESBOCES, “It’s never too early to begin investigating possible career tracks, and our Summer Exploration Program provides students with the opportunity to begin thinking seriously about the livelihoods they may pursue and where they want to study. In today’s competitive job market, no one can afford not to be forward thinking about career-based training and education.”

New Garden Dedicated
Passengers traveling through Stony Brook past the Long Island Museum on Route 25A might have noticed a new bit of landscape recently. The Long Island Museum unveiled the Betty and William F. Howind Memorial Garden, funded by the North Suffolk Garden Club (NSCG), at a ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony. The event celebrated the Howinds as long-time supporters of the museum and Betty as a devoted member of the Garden Club. “Betty and Bill Howind were longtime supporters of LIM and Betty enjoyed
working in the LIM’s Emma Lee Blackford Rockwell Herb Garden, designed and maintained by North Suffolk Garden Club. The garden club wanted to honor Betty and Bill for their generosity and for Betty’s devoted service to the club. So NSGC felt the LIM campus was a perfect place to create a lasting memorial to the Howinds and LIM agreed!” commented Jennifer Lawrence, NSGC President, who was instrumental in the project. The North Suffolk Garden Club has been maintaining the Emma Lee Blackford Rockwell
Herb Garden on the grounds of the Long Island Museum, since 1993. The Howind Garden is the most recent highlight of this long-standing partnership. Together, LIM and the Garden Club selected Michael J. Opisso to design the garden. A key feature of the space is a beautifully designed black walnut bench by Christopher A. Miano. When LIM Executive Director Neil Watson proposed Christopher’s design to Jennifer, he mentioned that Chris works only in black walnut. It happened that Jennifer and her husband Brewster had 600 board feet of black walnut from trees on their Nissequogue property and Chris was able to use some of the wood for the bench. “It really is a local product,” said Jennifer. The Betty and William F. Howind Memorial Garden provides several key elements to the museum property including, delineated walkways, a resting spot for visitors on their way into Stony Brook Village and a beautiful focal point to celebrate the new vision of LIM as a community destination. The new garden will enhance the museum grounds for years to come and will be enjoyed by thousands of Long Islanders throughout the seasons.
