this issue into focus last year when, in the State Legislature, they blocked the DEC from continuing the current archaic commercial fishing licensing scheme for another three years. As a compromise, the licensing scheme was limited to one (1) year and DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos agreed to come to Long Island last fall to meet with members of commercial fishing industry. At that meeting, the industry unanimously supported two demands: 1) Challenge the federal quotas; and 2) Reform the commercial fishing licensing system to improve access and transferability of licenses. The Commissioner promised action. Assemblyman Thiele stated, “I am pleased to see that the DEC is keeping

Some are relatively direct, with few bumps and curves along the way; others prove far more winding and full of detours. In the end, though, I believe we all reach the destination we are meant to. Eventually. Last week, I touched on some of the ways I go about my craft, and how my writing has evolved through the years. In speaking to the next generation of potential journalists, the best experience I can draw upon is my own. There was a time when I was in their shoes, sitting in high school classrooms and then college lecture halls, wondering where exactly this path I had chosen would lead. It was during those formative years that I looked to my own sources of inspiration in the writing field for guidance, absorbing their styles and studying their techniques for

some hint of how I could apply these skills to my own drafts and create a unique voice. Just today, in fact, I found myself perusing the archives of past “In Step” columns, searching for a tribute I had written following the passing of Ed Lowe, master storyteller, and one mentor I had the extreme good fortune to work with during my time here at South Bay. Seldom do we have the opportunity to meet our idols, let alone share in our mutual love of a particular craft. No matter the difference in age, or how vast the generational gap, there is simply no substitute for the wisdom of someone who has experienced those things you only dare to dream. If you had asked me back in my formative years where I saw myself in ten, fifteen years time, I probably would have shrugged and said, “Hopefully reporting from the clubhouse of the New York Yankees” or “traveling across the country ala Almost Famous, searching for the next big story to be featured in Rolling Stone Magazine.” Realistic? Perhaps

not entirely. But these were the people, and the positions, I admired from afar and wished to emulate. Maybe it was the sense of prestige I found attractive, the celebrity aspect. Fast forward into the real world of adulthood, and it wasn’t long before I discovered that, if you truly have a love for writing - or any particular skill - it truly doesn’t matter where you do it, what the topics entail or how much notoriety you gain in the process. The fact is, you can make a significant difference on any level, even within the confines of the local community you grew up in, surrounded by the family, friends and local followers you may be fortunate to gain along the way. And that is exactly what has happened, from this desk in Farmingdale, as I put fingertips to keyboard each week, drawing from my own life experiences and those who have inspired me. The path may not always be clear, but the passion has never wavered. That, above all else, is what makes the journey worthwhile.

Commercial fishermen have long suffered from unfair and inequitable quotas arbitrarily set by the federal government based on faulty data. Additionally, the current regulations related to the transfer of permits and licenses have thwarted the proper operation of this industry.” “We must resolve these issues with our fishing community at the table in full participation. The economic survival of our commercial fishermen must be our ultimate priority. As a licensed hair professional, Eileen has a following of paying customers, but her real passion lies with helping those who are not able to afford a haircut or hair process. Suffolk Federal’s Vice President of Information Technology and extreme distance marathon runner Eva Casale heightened awareness for our veterans and raised almost $30,000 in support of Hope for the Warriors. Eva completed seven marathons, with extra stops amounting to more than 194 miles, over the course of seven days. Each day’s marathon focused on honoring local servicemen killed in action and was linked to the communities they called home. The team delivered over 184 flowers at Points of Honor during the 7-day program and the public was also able to participate in the final 3.1 mile leg of her journey at the end of each day. “This was a heartfelt running tour of over 194 miles which enabled me to utilize my passion for running to bring Long Islanders together to support programs and services for veterans and to acknowledge how much ‘Every Veteran is Appreciated,’” explained Casale. “I created Team E.V.A. which stands for ‘Every Veteran Appreciated,’ to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to defend our country.” Suffolk Federal once

New Minister Welcomed After nearly one year and thoughtful consideration of eighteen ministerial profiles, a search team of nine members has recommended Reverend Philip Hobson to be the 27th minister of the Mt. Sinai Congregational Church since its organization in 1789. In the tradition of the Congregational Churches of our country’s founders, the members of Mt. Sinai Church voted unanimously on April 29th to call Rev. Hobson to be the church’s new senior minister. He arrived in Miller Place with his family in late July and will begin his service to the church on August 1st, preaching at two worship services on Sunday, August

5th, at 8:30 and 10:00 a.m. Rev. Hobson grew up in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, a town that made history as part of the Manhattan Project in WWII. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Japanese Studies from Earlham College in Indiana, a Master’s of Divinity from the Chicago Theological Seminary, and continues his work toward a Doctor of Ministry in Preaching at that institution. He served as minister at St. Paul’s Evangelical and Reformed United Church of Christ in Dallas, Texas, before being called to the First Congregational Church in Charlotte, Michigan, in 2003. As the new minister at Mt. Sinai Congregational Church, Rev. Phil and his

On Thursday, July 12th, Legislator Sarah Anker attended First Responder’s Day at Little Flower Children and Family Services in Wading River. The event, which was held at the Monsignor John T. Fagan Campus, was hosted by the Little Flower organization in appreciate for all first responders. Staff members provided free breakfast, lunch, and dinner throughout the day to local police, fire department, and EMS members.

“Little Flower provides essential support to all those that they serve, and it was my distinct pleasure to join them in offering our appreciation to local first responders,” said Legislator Sarah Anker. “Our police officers fire department volunteers and EMS workers are vital to maintaining the health and safety of our communities and it was wonderful to have a chance to thank them for their service.” Little Flower Children and Family Services was

established in 1930 and provides foster boarding home care and residential treatment care for orphaned, abandoned, and neglected children. Exploring Careers

Each summer, Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) holds its popular Summer Career Exploration Program for students entering 8th, 9th and 10th grades so they can experiment with potential career possibilities through two-week, project-based introductory courses. This year the program ran from July 9-20 at the three ESBOCES technical career centers located in Oakdale, Bellport, and Riverhead. Federal and state education initiatives focus on ensuring that students leave high school properly prepared for college and adequately equipped to compete in a demanding

global workforce. These courses provide students with an opportunity to explore career interests long before graduation, show them what is required to succeed in those fields, and introduce them to career programs available in grades 11 and 12 through such educational providers as ESBOCES. To be eligible to participate in the Summer Exploration Program, students had to be entering grades 8-10 in the fall of 2018 and be 12 years old by the time the program commenced. Sessions ran Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the ESBOCES career

and technical centers in Bellport, Oakdale, and Riverhead. Course offerings included Culinary Arts, Automotive Technology, Cosmetology, Basic Pet Care and Training, and Welding. Said Donna Singer, program administrator, “It’s never too early for students to be exposed to possible career tracks. Our Summer Exploration Program provides attendees with the opportunity to begin thinking seriously about the professions they may pursue and where they want to study.”

SILO Celebrates On Saturday July 21st, the Suffolk Independent Living Organization (SILO) celebrated the 28th Anniversary of the American with Disabilities Act at SILO Headquarters located at 755 Waverly Avenue in Holtsville. SILO was proud to introduce our New York State, Suffolk County and Brookhaven Town elected officials that attended our Americans with Disabilities Celebration. Each one of our elected officials spoke about the successes brought about by the ADA

and the need to do more in the future to advance the rights of the disabled. This community event hosted families and partner agencies and included great food, entertainment, music and dancing. A good time was had by all that attended and SILO hopes to continue to promote ADA Achievements in the future. SILO is the New York State Designated Center for Independent Living Services. It is a non-forprofit Human Services Agency dedicated to

working with people with disabilities, elderly individuals and their families. SILO provides over 27 programs and services throughout the Long Island Region. The ultimate goal is to provide the necessary support for people with disabilities and the elderly to live independently in within their communities. Charity Golf Outing On Monday, June 25th, the Longwood Athletic Booster Club hosted The Phil Reany Jr. Memorial Charity Golf Outingat Spring Lake Golf Club in Middle Island. Previously known as the Longwood Charity Golf Outing, the event was renamed in honor of Longwood Board of Education member Philip Reany who passed away in October 2017. This year, more than 130 golfers participated with proceeds benefitting the family of a student at Ridge Elementary

School and the Blessings in a Backpack Longwood Chapter. Jonathan Golden, a first-grade student at Ridge Elementary School, has been hospitalized since January 2018. Proceeds from the event will be used to offset the family’s mounting medical expenses. Blessings in a Backpack Longwood CSD provides more than 360 students in the federal free and reduced lunch program with nutritious food to bring home every Friday during the school year.

“The outpouring of support we receive is overwhelming,” said Longwood High School Assistant Principal and Outing Chairperson Scott Reese. “I am so grateful to our participants and sponsors for their dedication to make this event such a success. Their impact on our recipients is immeasurable.” Now in its ninth year, the event has raised more than $110,000 in support of the students, staff, and residents of the Longwood School community.

Making Cents Project-based learning inspired fifth-grade students at Waverly Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District to go above and beyond as they developed a contest to promote recycling across the building. A group of students in Danielle Sexton and Kristina Fulcher’s class

developed the initiative after being asked the question of how they can help the environment. They then collaborated to develop a buildingwide recycling contest, where the grade level who recycled the most plastic water bottles would receive a pajama, movie and popcorn party. Through rigorous promotion, the

students spread the word about the contest and also created signs for each garbage can in the building. At the completion of the contest, the student effort earned $30 in recycled water bottles, which was used to purchase the reward for the fourth- and fifth-grade students who won the contest.
