Pilot Project Completed
W
orking to prevent deadly mosquito-born illnesses such as malaria, three Ward Melville High School students traveled to Africa to complete a pilot project this summer. The initiative was coordinated by the Screensaver Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by Ward Melville graduate Emily Holtzman and sophomore Julia Holtzman. The foundation provides low-cost, cut-to-fit screen windows for huts and dwellings in poor villages.

101 YEARS YOUNG - On July 14th, Josephine Eich, a resident at Our Lady of Consolation Nursing & Rehabilitation Care Center, celebrated her 101st birthday. Eich was born in Springfield, MA and shortly afterward moved with her family to Maspeth, Queens. She worked as a long-distance switchboard operator for the New York Telephone Company. Eich met her husband, Frederick J. Eich, and remained in Maspeth until her retirement from the Elmhurst-Mt. Sinai Hospital after 25 years. After raising two children, she moved to Terryville and eventually settled in Port Jefferson. In May of 2014, Eich won the silver medal in volleyball and the bronze medal in bowling in the golden games on May 9th. She still lectures at mass every Sunday and feels it gives her purpose in life.

Golf Outing Fundraiser
On July 14th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. held its fourth annual Col. Kenneth F. Lawlor Memorial Golf Outing at the Huntington Country Club. More than 130
participants took part in the event, which raised approximately $130,000 for Alzheimer’s Disease research and care. While on the links, golfers also had the chance to win a car in
the Hyundai Hole-In-One Challenge. After a round of golf, they enjoyed a cocktail hour, dinner and a chance to win raffle and silent auction prizes. Participants were welcomed by the
President of the Neuwirth Foundation who spoke about her family’s vision for ADRC and how ADRC continually works to ensure that vision. This year’s honoree, Ron Eagar, CPA, CCIFP, Partner, Grassi & Co., has become a renowned advisor in many industries, including real estate, construction, wholesale distribution, transportation, and notfor-profits. He uses his wide range of knowledge to assist not-for-profits through the strenuous process of SarbanesOxley compliance. In addition to being involved in accounting and trade industry associations, Mr. Eagar plays an active
role in his community by supporting philanthropic organizations. The event is named after Col. Kenneth F. Lawlor, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in the last years of his life. His grandson, Keith Lawlor, who chairs the golf tournament, is also Vice President of ADRC’s Board of Directors. The Youth and Justice Sub-Committee will be our bridge to Suffolk’s townships in our efforts to connect justice-involved with services in their own communities. Ultimately, this will improve public safety and help these young people lead more productive lives,” stated DeMarco. This summer, Sheriff DeMarco will accompany Judge Camacho on a tour of Suffolk’s youth bureaus to learn more about the services available in each community. “Through his initiatives focusing on adolescent
offenders, Sheriff DeMarco has proven that he is a leader in confronting the challenges facing our county’s juvenile justice system, and I am pleased to work with him in reaching out to our townships to coordinate local efforts to make sure that we, as a community who cares about our children, keep kids out of jails and make our neighborhoods safer,” stated Judge Camacho. About Sheriff DeMarco and the Youth Reentry Task Force The County Sheriff has been at the forefront of a national trend towards developing effective inmate rehabilitation programs and coordinating community-based services for individuals reentering our communities after spending time in jail. Due in part to these efforts, there has been a significant decrease in the county jail population
since he first took office. In 2005, the daily jail population averaged close to 2000 inmates, and now that figure is less than 1400. In 2011, Sheriff DeMarco launched the Youth Tier and Youth Reentry Task Force Initiative to improve outcomes for incarcerated youth in the county jails, and the award-winning program has become a national model in the field of corrections. The Sheriff’s Youth Reentry Task Force, which has grown to more than 40 members from the fields of mental health, education, government and corrections, has played an integral role in the program’s success. In June 2014, he was appointed by the Suffolk County Executive to be the Chairman of the

Snapshots & Timehops By: Jamie Lynn Ryan At this time last year, I was in the midst of an eightday tour of Ireland with 13 members of my family. And today, thanks to the wonders of a clever little app called “Timehop,” I am able to relive each day of that memorable vacation via the handful of photos I posted on Facebook throughout the journey. And they say too much sharing is bad! Of course, this is but a small sampling of the nearly 1,000 pictures I snapped over the course of the week, from takeoff to landing and everything in between. Seeing as I
am slightly obsessed with finding random scenes and candid shots to capture on a daily basis, you can just imagine how thrilled I was to explore one of the most beautiful lands abroad. Under any circumstances, it qualified one of the greatest experiences of my life. Coupled with the fact that it marked my first time on a plane and my first journey out of the country, well, that just added to the highlight reel. Considering that, prior to this, I had never ventured beyond the span of states between Vermont and Virginia, it was quite a momentous occasion. This past Christmas, I
attempted to compile just a “few” favorites to create calendars and a small book of the journey as gifts. Seemed like a simple enough task; however, four hours after my initial brainstorm, I was still sitting at my computer, poring over hundreds of photos, comparing and eliminating until I had it narrowed down to the “perfect” mix. As if there was such a thing. The perfection is in the moments you create, the unplanned, unstaged instants that bring to life stories and anecdotes to last a lifetime. We could all use a few more of those.

Celebrity Golf Classic Held The Marty Lyons Foundation (MLF) recently hosted its 29th Annual Celebrity Golf Classic at the Old Westbury Golf and Country Club. The golf outing was the foundation’s largest fundraising event of the year. Hundreds of supporters played golf and attended the evening festivities. The Marty Lyons Foundation was founded by Marty Lyons, a former NFL defensive lineman for the New York Jets and member of the legendary “New York Sack Exchange.” The MLF grants wishes to children, between the ages of three and seventeen, who have terminal or lifethreatening illnesses, and is the only nonprofit in the nation to offer second wishes. The foundation’s Man of the Year, Bobby Cunningham, Jr., owner
of Duct Cleaning Co., Inc., was saluted at the evening dinner. “Bobby Cunningham, Jr., is an individual the foundation “The Celebrity Golf Classic grows bigger each year. The foundation needs and appreciates the generosity of those who attend. All the members of our board and I welcome our supporters and thank the celebrity golfers. This is the 29th Classic and once again it has given us the perfect opportunity to interact with friends and foster support for our mission,” Lyons said. During the day golfers had the opportunity to challenge Lyons’ golfing skills at one special par 3 hole. The course was full of fun activities and food. Members of The New York Flight Crew Cheerleaders interacted with golfers who also enjoyed cigars from Davidoffof Geneva
(NY) Inc., and cocktails provided by Georgi Vodka. The Marty Lyons Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Efforts are made to raise over $200,000 each year to support the foundation’s wish granting program. The primary sponsors of this year’s MLF Celebrity Golf Classic include Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Riggio, The LandTek Group, Milburn Flooring, Cunningham Duct Cleaning Co., Inc., and Star Industries/ Georgi Vodka. Lyons’ determination led to the establishment of the foundation after his own personal experiences with sickness and the deaths of close family and friends. With the encouragement of his family and friends, he formed The Marty Lyons Foundation in 1982. Since that time the organization
has granted over 6,500 wishes that have brightened the lives of countless children. Summer Camp Program County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco announced today that 19 children from Suffolk County will head upstate early Sunday morning for a fun-filled week at the New York State Sheriffs’ Association Institute’s 2014 Summer Camp. The Sheriffs’ Summer Camp is designed to provide a solid recreational program while fostering a sense
of good citizenship. This will mark the 37th year of the camp’s operation. The Sheriffs’ Summer Camp, which is located near Penn Yan in Yates County, is supported by the Sheriffs’ Association’s Honorary Members through their contributions and annual dues. This year the camp will accommodate over 900 deserving boys and girls from across New
York State. Sheriff DeMarco, in discussing the objectives and goals of the camp said, “The Sheriffs’ Summer Camp Program is designed to provide a child who ordinarily would not have the chance, an opportunity to go away during the summer.” He added, “The primary objective is to create a positive interaction between the
kids attending camp and the officers who participate in the camp programs. We have found from experience that the kids develop a renewed respect and understanding for the men and women who enforce our laws. The officers become their friends for a week.” Throughout the weeklong stay, the children observe special exhibits
and demonstrations presented by Sheriffs’ Offices from across the state. Included in these presentations are boat and bike safety programs, law enforcement equipment and technical demonstrations, archery competitions for accuracy and even a talent show just for fun. Upon completion, all children are awarded a diploma for their

Jared Farmer, PhD, an Associate Professor of History at Stony Brook University, is the 2014 recipient of the Hiett Prize in the Humanities, a national honor awarded by The Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture. The award recognizes scholars devoted to the humanities in the early stages of their careers whose work shows extraordinary promise and has a significant public component related to contemporary culture. A prolific writer and educator at Stony Brook, Farmer is an environmental historian with special expertise in the American West. He will receive the Hiett Prize and give a lecture on his scholarship at a luncheon at the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas on November 12th. “Jared brings to light the hidden histories of landscapes and habitats and the ways human beings interact with them,” said Dr. J. Once again, the Dennis Cannataro Family Summer Concert Series is back in downtown Smithtown where families and friends gather and enjoy the comradery and music of their favorite tribute bands. “The shows provide a wonderful opportunity for everyone to enjoy downtown Smithtown, support our local restaurants and businesses and listen to great music,” said Legislator Robert Trotta. Organized by the Friends
of the Smithtown Library, these concerts were made possible by a county grant from the Office of Economic Development obtained by former Suffolk County Legislator Lynne C. Nowick, now a Smithtown Town Councilwoman. The new Suffolk County Legislator, Robert Trotta, has told the concert goers that he will make every effort to get the money for the Friends of the Smithtown Library to continue their free concerts.
The concerts are held every Thursday evening during the month of July through August 14th at 8 p.m. on the front lawn of the Smithtown Library at the intersection of Middle Country Road and North County Road. The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. Now, thanks to a grant from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation, the museum can announce that coveted status at the grand iron gates to the estate. Pomeroy Foundation grants fund markers for historic sites - dating from 1740 to 1914 - to educate the public, to support local historic preservation, and to promote historic tourism and economic development. Grants pay for a standard marker, mounting pole and
shipping. “Each year the Vanderbilt welcomes more than 100,000 visitors from around the globe,” said Lance Reinheimer, executive director of the museum. “This plaque announces to each visitor as they pass through our stately gates that the Vanderbilt Estate is an American treasure.” The foundation, based in Syracuse, New York, launched its Historic Roadside Marker Program in 2006 to erect markers in towns and villages within Onondaga County, New York. Eventually, the program was extended to
all counties in the state. The foundation has funded more than 140 historic markers in 30 New York counties. The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the nation’s historic places worthy of preservation. Authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Park Service’s National Register of Historic Places is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect America’s historic and archaeological resources.
Historic Designation
Every Wednesday, senior citizens over the age of 62 will receive free admission to the Long Island Game Farm Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo when accompanied by another person. That person will pay full price while the senior will be admitted free of charge (regularly $16.95 plus tax). Many senior citizens have made attending the Long Island Game Farm a family tradition. They brought their children to the park when it first opened in 1970. Now, more and more seniors are the ones who bring their grandchildren for a fun and educational experience that the wildlife park offers.
For each visitor who pays full price, one senior citizen will be admitted into the Game Farm for free. For example, if both grandparents come in with two grandchildren, they will get in free and only have to pay the children’s admission price. As always, the Game Farm will have its petting zoo and exotic animals on display, including giraffes, lemurs, zebras, buffalos and cougars. In addition, visitors can see the new Erik’s Reptile Edventure Discovery Center and this year’s exciting summer show, The One and Only Pekingese Dog Act featuring Vanna the Baboon – presented by
David Rosaire. Grant Awarded Frank J. Carasiti Elementary School technology teacher Jennifer Meschi earned national acclaim this summer as she received one of 100 grants given in the national ING Unsung Heroes grant program. As an award winner, Meschi will receive $2,000 to fund a hands-on insect research project called “Science Alive.” The
project, which is tied to the NYS Common Core Learning Standards, will enable three kindergarten classes to maintain ant farms and three first grade classes to work with ladybugs. The students will use various technological resources to document their studies and integrate the project into other areas of the curriculum. “Bringing together
good old-fashioned handson learning with the wonderful technology that students have available to them today, increases the impact of the lesson exponentially,” said Ms. Meschi. ING Unsung Heroes grants are given to K-12 educators utilizing new teaching methods and techniques that improve learning.

Working to prevent deadly mosquito-born illnesses such as malaria, three Ward Melville High School students traveled to Africa to complete a pilot project this summer. The initiative was coordinated by the Screensaver Foundation, a non-profit organization the phone. The Problem Automobile crashes remain a leading cause of death for children and it’s important that parents consistently and correctly use the appropriate car seat to keep their child passengers safe. Many parents may be unknowingly endangering their children as three out of four car seats are not used correctly, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
