Pencil It In By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Pencil it in. Erase it. And repeat. Such has been the state of my calendar for the last several weeks. Months, even. I’m not sure when it became so difficult to plan things. Used to be a time when you could simply pick up the phone – yes, the actual phone – and call a friend to go to dinner, a movie, the beach, whatever. Chances are, you also needed to coordinate a ride to said destination from a parental unit; but still, somehow, you made it happen. Nowadays, such outings require about 30 days advance notice – and, even at that, will most likely be
rescheduled at least three times before materializing. For some reason, the more methods of communication available, the more difficult it has become to maintain contact. Actual, personal contact. Sending a text, only to have it halfheartedly acknowledged four days later, is not quite the same as catching up over drinks. Liking a Facebook status doesn’t indicate your genuine interest in another person’s life. Face-to-face conversation does. I have always been the type of person who tries to keep in touch, the one reaching out, making plans, coordinating… And I don’t mind it, mostly. But when it feels as though it’s becoming more of a chore
than anything, well, perhaps it’s time to reevaluate. Friendships, like the communication which they are based upon, are a twoway street. Summer is a perfect season to reconnect, to socialize, to reunite with those long-lost, or perhaps just slightly lapsed, acquaintances. School is out, work schedules tend to be more lax, vacations are planned… and more often than not, it winds up being worth the wait. If only it could be written in ink from day one. Thousands of guests turned out for the Long Island Game Farm – Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo’s (LIGF) 2nd annual 1970’s Admission Price Day on Saturday, July 16th. In an ode to the simpler lifestyle of yesteryear, guests of all ages came to celebrate the park’s 47th season during the event, which was complete with pet rock stations, face painting and discounted prices reflective of those charged in the 1970s. In honor of this special
occasion, LIGF also hosted a Giraffe Encounter Giveaway through its Facebook page. Ten lucky winners were selected ahead of the event to have the opportunity to get nose-to-nose with Clifford, the park’s gentle giant, while hand-feeding him a tasty snack and learning interesting giraffe facts from the farm’s animal educational staff. New to park this year, the LIGF Giraffe Encounter is presented at 11:30 a.m. each day, for a ticket price of $6.
The Long Island Game Farm, founded in 1970 by Stanley and Diane Novak, has been serving as a place of education and family fun for 47 seasons. The park features many interactive animal experiences, where guests can get up-close with their favorite animals; such as the pack of camels at the Camel Encounter, herd of deer in Bambiland and goats and other baby animals in the nursery. In addition, the Game Farm offers and an assortment of children’s amusement rides.
Fire Island Lighthouse Events The Lighthouse will be open late all Saturdays in July, until 8 p.m. Tower tours are available until 7:30 p.m. at regular fee, weather permitting. *** Family Seaside Adventure Wednesday, July 27th, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon Meet at the lighthouse. Undersheriff Steve Kuehhas was sworn in today during a ceremony at the Suffolk County Clerk’s Office in Riverhead. Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco, along with family, friends and colleagues attended the event. Suffolk County Clerk Judith Pascale administered the oath of office. During the ceremony, DeMarco welcomed the new Undersheriff and said the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office is fortunate
to have Kuehhas onboard. He stated, “Steve has a stellar reputation and brings nearly 30 years of diverse law enforcement experience to our executive team.” County Clerk Pascale added that Correction Officers and Deputy Sheriffs have very tough jobs, and the public does not always recognize the important work they do to protect our residents. She praised Kuehhas for his commitment to law enforcement and added,
“The Suffolk County Correctional Facility is the last line of defense to protect the public and I know you are ready for this challenging new stage in your career.” Kuehhas will provide direct oversight of the Sheriff’s Office’s managerial and senior supervisory law enforcement personnel and oversee the Office’s Internal Affairs Bureau, Internal Security Unit, Gang Intelligence Unit and the Criminal Investigations Bureau.

Program a Success On July 13th, at Brookhaven Town Hall, Supervisor Ed Romaine, Councilman Michael Loguercio and the Brookhaven Youth Bureau held a Drug and Alcohol Abuse Education, Prevention and Awareness Program, highlighting the current heroin epidemic facing the community. During the hour and a half program, a clinical supervisor from the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) discussed a variety of topics;
including new trends in substance abuse, signs of drug and alcohol abuse, and what steps to take if abuse is taking place. This was the second program on substance abuse sponsored by the Youth Bureau held within the last five weeks, both well attended. The Youth Bureau has received a high volume of calls regarding these programs and a third program, including a NARCAAN training, will be taking place in October. NARCAN is a medication that can reverse the
effects of an overdose. This program will be for pre-registered participants only due to the limit of NARCAN kits available. If you would like additional information about the Youth Bureau’s programs, please call 631.451.8011. If you know anyone who is suffering from drug and/or alcohol abuse, please contact the Youth Bureau. A licensed professional will provide critical information and referrals.
The Youth & Community Alliance of Smithtown will be hosting a regional training on the value and benefits of participation in your local alliance/ coalition. The National Guard Counterdrug Task Force will be providing training for all attendees. This kick-off meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 23rd, at the Smithtown Library Main Building, 1 North Country Road in Smithtown at 10:30 a.m. The Alliance encourages residents of Smithtown Township to employ all of their resources in a cooperative manner to strengthen communities, keep youth and families physically & emotionally healthy and safe, and free of substance abuse.
Community leaders, clergy, school district representatives, law enforcement, healthcare professionals, college & high school students, as well as veterans, senior citizens and social & civic groups are invited to share their experience, knowledge and concern for their fellow residents. The National Guard Counterdrug Task Force will educate attendees about the various benefits to the community and the numerous advantages for participating individuals and groups. Alliance members not only strengthen their communities, but have opportunity for networking, leadership roles, meaningful use

ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES - Betsy Gulotta, College Scholarship Chair, presented a South Shore Audubon Society Jerry Bishop Environmental Studies Scholarship to Catherine Stolfi, from Medford, at the Society’s annual dinner. Now in the Environmental Science Graduate program at Adelphi University, Ms. Stolfi spent five years gaining professional experience, including an internship at the Town of Hempstead Department of Environmental Conservation.
Special Exhibit As Long Island students head back to school this fall, the Long Island Museum in Stony Brook will present Drawn from Life: Objects and Stories from William Sidney Mount’s Paintings from August 12th through December 31st, 2016. The Long Island Museum is home to the largest collection of paintings, drawings and writings of William Sidney Mount, who grew up in Stony Brook. Mount’s work is an integral part of the museum’s New York State chartered school programs. William Sidney Mount chronicled the places, people, and objects within his paintings with a level of accuracy that gives us a vivid window on rural life in and around his home in Stony Brook in the mid nineteenth century. He might depict people working, playing, resting, courting, or posing in their best clothes for an individual portrait. With Mount’s artwork exhibited in public
and private collections nationwide, audiences often have only the paintings themselves from which to learn about the people, activities, and places he depicted. Most of what Mount captured on canvas with his brushes and paints is gone; only a handful of the exact objects that he used for reference survive, and Long Island’s rural culture and environment changed drastically in the century following Mount’s death in 1868. What survives in Mount’s paintings is his interpretation of the people, places, and things around him. This exhibit is an opportunity to show Mount’s artwork in context with the material culture that informed his painting. Combining extant Mount reference objects with additional material from LIM’s collections allows a three-dimensional look at the subjects and details of his paintings. LIM’s costume collection in particular provides a
rich source for animating the Victorian fashions he documented. The objects also offer a glimpse at how artists such as Mount make choices when interpreting the sights around them. Mount combined firsthand observation with imagination to create art that was at once both technically accurate and also pleasing to the eye. In the second half of Mount’s career, photography offered a new method for documenting people, places, and things, as well as a medium of artistic expression. As Mount both painted his own portrait and sat for photographs, we have the opportunity to consider the advantages and limitations that each process offered the viewers and the subjects. Finally, contemporary photographs of buildings and landscapes that Mount painted allow the visitor to see how such sites have changed over time - many within a short drive of the museum.

Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright was a guest reader at the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom School Summer Program at Faith Baptist Church on July 12th. Councilwoman Cartright read the story When Grandmama Sings, written by Margaree Mitchell and illustrated by James E. Ransome. The story focuses on an African American singer who embarks on a tour in the segregated Deep South.
The Councilwoman discussed the history of segregation and highlighted the drastic changes in the law and society since that time period. She encouraged the students to recognize the struggles of their ancestors and to always do their best and take advantage of the many opportunities that are available to them now. The CDF Freedom School’s program mission is to “build strong, literate, and empowered
children prepared to make a difference in themselves, their families, communities, nation and world today.” The program provides children access to books during the summer and after school and helps to supplement classroom learning during the summer. Freedom Schools, founded in 1992, now have had over 137,000 participants from grades Pre-K to 12.

competiton hosted by Leslie Kennedy’s office right here in Nesconset. As always, Long Island Cares was in attendance to collect food for those in need amongst our communities. With a large crowd gathered to hear Songs in the Attic, the Nesconset Chamber was able to collect over $1,500 in their fifty-fifty raffle, the raffle ticket was drawn by our very own Little Miss Nesconset. After the raffle drawing, the crowd was not disappointed, as Songs in the Attic performed a

Motorcycle Run
More than 400 motorcycles with their riders and passengers - adding up to over 600 participants - took off from Stony Brook University Cancer Center on Sunday, July 17th for the 10th annual Sticky Finger Motorcycle Run. This event helped to raise over $20,000, of which will support breast cancer services and programs at Stony Brook, adding to the upwards of $180,000 raised by past runs. Hosted by 102.3 FM WBAB Fingers and the Great South Bay Music Festival, the event kicked
off with live rock ‘n’ roll with classic rock band, “TRAINWRECK.” Food trucks and vendors were on site at the Cancer Center and participants enjoyed free giveaways. Then everyone hit the road and headed south to the Great South Bay Music Festival held at Shorefront Park in Patchogue. Riders and their passengers then had the opportunity to listen to two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame legend Graham Nash and more than 15 other musical performances. Stony Brook University
