Inspiration 101 I recently had the opportunity to speak to a small group of high school students with an interest in writing during a one-week digital journalism camp held at Hofstra University. Not quite sure what to expect, I brought samples of our newspaper and magazine, along with a brief bio of myself, my career trajectory thus far, and a handful of anecdotes to share with the group. As it turned out, all that information filled up precisely ten minutes of what was to be a nearly hourlong presentation. Fortunately, there were several curious students among the crowd, and their questions kept the dialogue going for quite some time afterward. Most often, the queries centered on this very column, how long I had been writing it {first column published: July 27th, 2005}, how many I had accumulated to this point {roughly 675, give or take, as the number seems to fluctuate each time I dive into the archives - head scratching, I know}, and how I am able to come up with original topics each week.
That was a tough one to pinpoint. Mostly, I draw from my own personal experiences for the initial inspiration - observations of my surroundings, a quote I am particularly fond of, a bit of current events that seems worthy of mention. Clearly, there is no particular format; merely a free flow of thoughts that somehow manifests itself into words on a page, with a message that readers can (hopefully) relate to in their own unique ways. Some followup questions included my favorite topics through the years {my Q&A with Don Mattingly immediately came to mind}, as well as the most difficult to write {the many memoriam-type pieces I have put together following the passings of several family members and close friends, at once heartfelt and healing}. Perhaps my favorite question though, was the one from the quiet young man in the corner who thoughtfully raised his hand to ask, “Do you ever start writing a piece and then decide you just don’t like it midway through?”
Yes. Absolutely. 100% YES. The fact is, no matter how much of a passion I or anyone else might have for writing, it’s nearly impossible to have each and every article turn out to be a winner. There are those topics you are initially inspired by that seem to trail off halfway down the page, leaving you with a bit of a blank slate to fill. There are those you perhaps weren’t that passionate about to begin with, yet felt a sort of obligation to take a stab at. In these cases, as I explained to the class, it’s often best to scrap the entire concept and go back to the drawing board. After all, if the words aren’t holding your own attention, how can you expect readers to remain engaged? As with most things, recognizing a flaw and attempting to correct it is an integral part of the process. This is how we learn, and ultimately grow, whether age 15 or 35. There is no limit to our capacity for improvement. Practice may not always lead to perfection, but it can surely bring you closer to a finished product you can be proud of.

Thousands of Long Islanders are expected to join the American Heart Association’s Long Island Heart Walk on Sunday, September 16th to raise funds to fight heart disease and stroke, America’s No. 1 and No. 5 causes of death. The annual event begins at 8:30 a.m. at Jones Beach, Field 5 in Wantagh. The non-competitive, three-mile walk includes teams of employees from local companies, along with friends and family members of all ages. “Participating in the Heart Walk can make an extraordinary impact in the community by investing funds in education and prevention programs, advocacy initiatives, and cutting edge scientific research which will save lives” said Vito Giannola, Vice President and Treasurer North America for Luxottica Group Long Island and Chair of the 2018 Long Island Heart Walk. “I look forward to working with Executive Leaders across Long Island to help raise awareness and funds for the American Heart Association to continue its mission to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.”

This September, thousands of individuals nationwide will join together in the battle against childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases by participating in the Long Island St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer. Massapequa is one of 65 cities nationwide helping raise funds and awareness during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. In Massapequa, the St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer will take place September 16th, at Westfield Sunrise Mall. Because of generous donors and events like the St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer, families never receive a bill from St.
Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food – because all a family should worry about is helping their child live. Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20 percent to more than 80 percent since it opened more than 50 years ago. St. Jude won’t stop until no child dies from cancer. The Art League of Long Island boasts an impressive roster of art instructors who not only teach but also “do.” Many of the Art League’s instructors are award-winning artists themselves whether on the local, national, or international stage. Back to School Supply Drive The Town of Brookhaven Youth Bureau’s INTERFACE Back to School Supply Drive will begin on Monday, July 30th and run through Friday, August 24th. Collection centers are located in the lobby of Town Hall at One Independence Hill in Farmingville and the Highway Department Facility located at 1140 Old Town Road in Coram, as well as at the Rose Caracappa Senior Center, located at 739 Route 25A, Mt. Sinai. The Youth Bureau is asking for donations of pens, calculators, backpacks, notebooks, lunch boxes, folders, glue, binders and more. The supplies will be distributed to needy families who may not be able to provide them to their children before
school begins. Last year, the Youth Bureau was able to collect enough supplies to help over 2,000 children prepare for school. Leadership Roles Two students from Earl L. Vandermeulen High School in the Port Jefferson School District have been selected to serve as Suffolk County representatives for the Section XI StudentAthlete Advisory Council. Samantha Ayotte, a sophomore, and Lia Desmond, a junior, will both serve in this
leadership role with approximately 22 selected students throughout Suffolk County who will work together to help enhance the high school student-athlete experience. Athletic Department representatives from each school from the 130 plus member schools in Section XI were asked to nominate
three students, making it unique that two from Port Jefferson were selected. The district congratulates Samantha and Lia for their dedication in helping to promote sportsmanship and positive relationships with other student-athletes, coaches, spectators, families and administrators.

Living History The Southold Historical Society is pleased to invite the public to experience living history throughout the season. Visitors to the Southold Historical Society complex will connect to history in a new way - through the eyes and experiences of local historic figures. On most summer Saturdays and Sundays, interpreters, dressed in period clothing, will be on hand to greet visitors and guide them through the society buildings. Some of the historical figures one might meet are: · Ann Currie-Bell, founder of Southold Historical Society in 1960 who lived in the red Victorian home that is central to the museum complex, · Samuel Landon, who lived in the colonial era house that is now known as Thomas Moore House and · Lewis Wilkinson, a nineteenth century typesetter and master printer. The Living History program is geared for families and visitors of all ages. Suggested donation is $5 per adult and $10
per family. The complex buildings are open Saturday and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. through October 7th, 2018 and by advanced appointment on Wednesdays. Even on days when costumed interpreters are not present, volunteers will be on hand to guide guests through the buildings. While visiting, be sure to check out the exhibition “Clink! Rock-n-Roll U (RNRU), a music school that teaches children and adults of all abilities, saw their teen student band, Rock Candy, kick off Arnoldstock, the most fabulous yearly music festival in southwest Suffolk. Arnoldstock took place on Saturday, July 14th in West Babylon and benefits the Nassau/Suffolk Autism Society (NSASA).
“At RNRU we work with children and adults with autism, so kicking off Arnoldstock was very special for Rock Candy,” said Jessica Gallone, owner RNRU. “I can’t thank Marcelo & Christine enough for giving our students the opportunity to perform in front of a live audience, and to open such a wonderful event,” she
continued. Rock Candy is comprised of Giuliana Gallone, 11 years-old, Vocals/Guitar; Luca Illonardi, 14 yearsold, Keys/Vocals; Matt Astronovich 14 years-old, Vocals; Jake Divillio, 14 years-old, Bass; Daniel Heuertas, 11 years-old, Guitar; and Hayden Curry 14 years-old, Drums.
Comedy Fundraiser brain tumor was removed, due to allergic reactions with the chemotherapy drug, treatment had to cease and the aggressive tumor returned a year after Cal’s initial diagnosis, this time in an inoperable part of the brain. He passed away a month later; just three days shy of his 67th birthday. Cal’s family and friends came together as Cal’s Crusaders for the inaugural Long Island Brain Tumor Walk in 2014 For years the National Brain Tumor Society has hosted events such as walks, runs, freezes, and rides to raise awareness of disease, to raise money for better treatments, and to connect the brain tumor community. 2014 was the first year Long Island hosted its own walk which was a total success. This year the Long Island Brain Tumor Walk will be held September 15th at Jones Beach. The National Brain
Tumor Society is the largest nonprofit organization dedicated to the brain tumor community in the United States and is rated as a 4-star charity on the Charity Navigator website. 688,000 people in the US are living with a brain tumor. Although 550,000 are benign, 138,000 are malignant and more than 69,000 others will be diagnosed this year. This is why the National Brain Tumor Society is fiercely committed to finding better treatments, and ultimately a cure, for people living with a brain tumor today and anyone who will be diagnosed tomorrow. Volunteers Needed Child Abuse Prevention Services (CAPS), Long Island’s leading volunteer organization dedicated to preventing child abuse and bullying, is looking for concerned individuals to present their acclaimed classroom programs on bullying, Internet safety and child abuse prevention to students in the coming school year. “The demand for CAPS workshops continues to grow, so it is urgent that we find more volunteers to join our mission of working together to keep every child safe from harm,” according to Alane Fagin, Executive Director.
“We can do something to prevent child abuse and bullying! We know that students who are exposed to prevention education early and throughout their school years are better prepared to respond when faced with a difficult situation.” Comprehensive training is provided to prospective volunteers to present CAPS workshops in schools across Long Island. Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures
than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should
