The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together Long Island (RTLI) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that is an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. RTLI works yearround with their focus on keeping people safe in their home, as well as making sure that they have safe access into their home. While most of their clients are elderly, they will help anyone who meets their income guidelines and classify as low-income with limited assets. Additionally, they have a special program to help our deserving veterans in need. As a way to thank them for their service, they created the Hero Home Improvement Program, which aligns with their mission of repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-ups and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk.
Additionally, if you are a business professional and are interested in getting involved with Rebuilding Together Long Island, the opportunity is available. RTLI is now interviewing business professionals to become an integral part of their Advisory Board and help advance their mission, whether it be through financial contributions, in-kind donations, networking capabilities or another way. Lastly, this organization is looking for people to fill the following volunteer positions: Crew Members, Electricians, Plumbers and Home Visitors. New York Cancer & Blood Specialists (NYCBS) welcomes oncologist, Nicole Carreau, MD to its practice. Dr. Carreau will be practicing at 12 East 86th Street, Central Park. “I wanted to join a large, well-respected group practice,” said Dr. Carreau. “I will bring expertise in the use of immunotherapy.” Medicine has been Dr. Carreau’s passion and inspired her to pursue it. “I was always interested in science and I wanted to build a career in which I could make a difference in people’s lives every day,” said Dr. Carreau. Dr. Carreau’s research in both Hodgkin’s and Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma patients included leading
a team of investigators across 17 centers in the US and Canada. Her research could allow patients who were previously considered transplant-ineligible to become candidates for the procedure, resulting in longer-lasting remissions. “There are so many subtypes of lymphoma, each of which behaves differently. It affects people of all ages and both genders,” said Dr. Carreau. She credits her experience from practicing at three locations: Perlmutter Cancer Center, Bellevue Hospital, and the Manhattan “VA” Medical Center. Dr. Carreau also credits her skills and expertise during college and medical school. At the University Of Connecticut School
Of Medicine, she attained several honors, being the recipient of the Carl F. Hinz Jrs. Scholars in Medicine Award. During her residency at Mount Sinai Hospital, Dr. Carreau was the recipient of the Student Teaching Award and the Arnold P. Gold Foundation’s Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award. Alfredo Torres, MD Joins NYCBS Alfredo Torres, MD has joined the team of medical oncologists at New York Cancer & Blood Specialists. Dr. Torres will be practicing at our Port Jefferson, Setauket, and Smithtown locations. Dr. Torres is a third generation physician in his family and knew early on, that medicine was his passion. A native of Venezuela, Dr. Torres credits the skills he has developed to limited access to medical resources. “I grew up in a country filled with opportunities and hope. There were highly professional and skillful physicians, but Venezuela always experienced scarcity in medical technology, diagnostic resources, and infrastructure,” said Dr. Torres. “I had to rely purely on clinical diagnosis to provide the right medical care for my patients.” He attended medical
school at Universidad de Carabobo, where he was a research assistant investigating immunology. Dr. Torres came to the United States because of its innovations in hematologyoncology. “I believe that my training and now practicing as a physician specialized in these fields in the US made me better as I combined a hands-on clinical base with world-class medical research and technology,” he said. Dr. Torres experienced his own heartbreak with cancer; his grandmother passing from colon cancer and his grandfather from leukemia. “This has allowed me to empathize with my patients, truly relate to their diagnosis, and become an ally in their journey to finding a cure and/or improving their quality of life,” said Dr. Torres. He believes that each patient
and diagnosis is different, and providing holistic support is needed for diagnosis and treatment. While residing in Venezuela, Dr. Torres was a volunteer for the Funcamama-Breast Cancer Foundation and Fundación de Niños con VIH. In the US, Dr. Torres completed his residency and fellowship at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he was awarded “best poster presentation” of ACP Journal club presentations. He was also the grant recipient from the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation for Use of Virtual Reality to decrease chemotherapyassociated anxiety, symptom distress, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue. “I look forward to joining NYCBS and providing the best medical care to the Long Island Community.” To make an appointment

Sharing Our Stories On July 15, the Middle Country Public Library premiered the Sharing Our Stories documentary, a culmination of a special inter-generational program that began this year with support from the Kline Family Foundation. More than 100 community members attended this film
screening and reception that recognized all of the documentary participants. Created by the MCPL Media Teens, this film focuses on the rich life experiences of older adults in the Middle Country community. This January, Media Teens attended five classes learning the basics of sound, lighting,
filming and interviewing including a field trip to the Stony Brook School of Journalism. Filming began in April and adults shared their significant life stories on camera as they were interviewed by the teens. The documentary and full interviews will soon be available on the library’s website.

The summer boating season is upon us and Supervisor Ed Romaine is spearheading a Town wide campaign reminding boaters to properly dispose of boat sewage at Town marina pumping stations, pump boats and barges. Brookhaven is a federally designated “No Discharge Zone” and the overboard discharge of boat sewage is prohibited in all the town’s waterways. In the summer of 2018, the Town serviced nearly 8,000 boats, pumping approximately 200,000 gallons of sewage. To accommodate the high number of seasonal
