Celebrating Summer

Angela’s House, a local non-profit that assists families caring for children that are medically fragile, held a two-day summer party at White Post Farms in Melville. The party was held on July 13th and 14th from 10:30 a.m. through 6 p.m. both days. Bob Policastro, Executive Director and founder, said, “This was a great opportunity offered to the families and their children. We were graciously offered this great party by the generous owners of White Post Farms. Their family has a medically fragile child and they understands

what a family experiences caring for a medically fragile child.” “This was also a great way for parents to meet each other which is a great support in itself” The party was amazing and everyone had a great time. The families deserve to have this type of special day going to the beautiful handicapped accessible White Post Farms, which is one of the top places on Long Island for family fun. They enjoyed the petting zoo, playground, bounce rides and water slides.” This event was open to all family members and

children of Angela’s House and their nurses from 10:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. either day for no charge. Families were also treated to a lunch and all the other amenities of the farm. Fire Island Ecosystem The ecosystem on Fire Island is as diverse as it is complex. Everything from the smallest tick to the largest shark can be found along the Fire Island National Seashore. In my 6 years of living on Fire Island, I have seen whales, sharks, dolphins and many other aquatic creatures. The whale sightings are very rare, but dolphins can be seen almost everyday. Sharks wash up on the beach occasionally, but you never see their dorsal fins popping up out of the water as in many popular movies. Just the other day on my way to work, I saw a small, dried shark on the sand getting pecked at by seagulls. Types of marine life aren’t the only animals with a presence on Fire Island. Birds, insects and

other land species have also been spotted. We have a myriad of bird species on Fire Island. It seems like each year, people spot a different kind of bird! Some of the aviary species that call this barrier island home include seagulls, piping plovers and ospreys. Fire Island also has an overwhelming number of insects. Pound for pound, insects make up the most populous genre of life on Fire Island. Mosquitos, ticks, spiders and beetles are literally everywhere you look. Some claim that this abundance is a bad thing, but they are wrong. Insects are the backbone to a healthy ecosystem. They are the most crucial part to Fire Island’s environment. Deer are arguably Fire Island’s most shining feature. These fourlegged gentle giants

scare day-trippers and amaze residents. Their playful antics and distinct personalities make deer a Fire Island staple. Foxes are becoming more and more plentiful on our little island. Rummaging through garbage pails or stealthily walking the beach, these little creatures are truly wondrous. Watching these animals from your bedroom window truly gives you an understanding of what it is like to survive. Following the notorious Hurricane Sandy, our island was decimated. Now, Fire Island and its inhabitants are quickly regaining their strength. These animals will remain part of the Fire Island landscape for years to come, for us to enjoy, our kids to enjoy and their kids to enjoy.

Packing Science By: Jamie Lynn Ryan When did packing become such a source of stress? Used to be, you could throw whatever you wanted into a suitcase, head to the airport shortly before ﬂight time, have your family see you off at the gate and be on your way. Not so much anymore. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for the added security. It just seems like, in an effort to make air travel safer for all, it has become extremely inconvenient for most. But, short of taking a transAtlantic cruise, it still serves as the quickest, most viable option to get where you want to go. So that leaves us to suck it up and deal with whatever

hassles come along with our “relaxing” vacations. Having never ﬂown before, this process has proven to be quite complicated, what with all the new rules and regulations – carry-on vs. checked baggage, ounces of liquids, Ziploc bags, and on and on… I must say, this is one time when the wealth of information available on the Internet has proven to be pretty useful. Nothing like hearing tips from those who have been there and done that already. But still, at the end of the day, once all the criteria are comprehended, there is still the small matter of fitting everything into one suitcase, preferably one that weighs

slightly less than a 12 yearold. Because, let’s face it – you can pack it, but can you carry it? Unless you’re traveling to some remote Third World country, chances are you will be able to purchase anything that may have been left behind. It just may not be quite like the comforts of home that we’re used to, that’s all. By the time you read this, I will have (hopefully) figured out how to condense the mountain of “stuff” piled in the corner of my room into my suitcase and carry-on, preferably in a TSA-approved, somewhat convenient manner so as to not give myself a hernia when picking it up. One can only hope.

He will study Trumpet and Chorus at Usdan, performing this summer with Band IV; from Melville, Cara Jacobson is a Junior at Half Hollow Hills East High School. She comes to Usdan this summer as a Music Staff Intern, and will perform with the Senior Chorus and the Select Chamber Choir. From North Babylon, Abraham Pierre is an Eighth Grade student at Robert Moses Middle School. He will study Tenor Saxophone this summer, and will perform with Band IV and in the Jazz Ensemble as well; from Commack, Joseph Tanay-Noto is a Junior at Commack High School. A cellist, he comes to Usdan this summer as a Music Staff Intern and will perform with Orchestra IV and the Senior Chorus; and from Levittown, Jordi Ariel Lotito is a Senior at WT Clarke High School. A violinist, she comes to Usdan this summer as a Music Staff Intern, and will perform with Orchestra IV and the Senior Chorus.

For the third year, five talented Long Island music students will receive a unique opportunity to study and perform this summer at Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts. The program was developed by Usdan Center in 2011 and supported with a charitable grant from Bethpage Federal Credit Union. The Usdan Center/Bethpage Scholars in the Arts program gives accomplished students who otherwise couldn’t attend Usdan, the opportunity to study at the country’s largest not-for-profit summer arts day camp. The students were chosen for their fine musicianship and for their achievements as outstanding representatives of their communities. James R. Taylor Jr., MD, Professor and Chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Stony Brook University School of Medicine and Co-Director of Stony Brook University Heart Institute, received the Distinguished Service Award for his contributions to improving the heart health of Long Islanders at the American Heart Association’s 17th Annual Heart Of The Hamptons Ball on June 29th. Dr. Taylor has served as Co-Director of Stony Brook’s Heart Institute since 2012 and has spent more than 20 years performing cardiothoracic surgery on Long Island. In receiving the award, which recognized his contributions and commitment to furthering the mission of the AHA, he thanked the Heart Institute staff, his fellow physicians and his family for their support in allowing him to serve his patients. Dr. Taylor was introduced by Henry Woo, MD, of Stony Brook University Neurosciences Institute, who co-chaired the AHA event and is a member of the AHA’s Long Island Regional Board of Directors. Dr. Taylor acknowledged Dr. Woo as a peer who inﬂuenced him to come to Stony Brook in 2012 after Dr. Taylor witnessed Stony Brook’s commitment to building the Neurosciences Institute – a model he plans to follow in the Heart Institute’s development into a leading regional referral center for cardiac care. Dr. Taylor is one of 19 Stony Brook affiliated doctors recently named among New York’s “Best Doctors” by New York magazine. database. His cardiac surgical experience includes coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, thoracic aortic disease, and minimally invasive cardiac surgery. Prior to joining Stony Brook, Dr. Taylor served as Vice Chair of Cardiothoracic Surgery at St. Francis Hospital and Chair of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital. He received his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina, followed by residencies in general and cardiothoracic surgery at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, where he served as chief resident and completed his cardiothoracic surgery fellowship. He is board certified in cardiothoracic surgery. Along with Harold Fernandez, MD, and William Lawson, MD, he serves as Co-Director of Stony Brook Heart Institute, which is Long Island’s only university-based cardiovascular program. The Heart Institute is the region’s leading referral center for clinically complex cardiac care, with a comprehensive, multidisciplinary program for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease. The AHA provides more than $16 million in grants to hospitals and other institutions on Long Island through 74 grants. Stony Brook University Hospital is currently among those receiving aid, along with SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. The June 29th event raised $500,000 for the AHA. “The success of the relationship between the American Heart Association and Stony Brook Medicine continues through our ongoing relationship and our research endeavors,” said Barbara Poliwoda, Regional Director of the American Heart Association.

His eyes are shining as he looks at me. “So happy to see you once again,” I exclaim. His face lights up. He apologizes for forgetting my name. That’s O.K. – I reply

I listen intently while he recounts his weekend visit with family, Grateful for their concern but content to live on his own – he explains. A small apartment in an urban town Insures he is still viable in spite of his years. A bus to board, A community of familiarity reassures him of his independence. Minutes ﬂy by – chores to finish before the end of my day. He reaches for my hand and says “thank you” and I knew what he meant. His eyes conveyed gratitude for my time, and when he smiled, I witnessed a glimmer of a younger man. The sentiment “take care” is spoken, he softly says he’s hopes he can visit soon. Once again, he smiles. “I’ll be looking for you,” I say and I return the smile. Purpose, love, confident you still count. CHECK PRESENTATION - The Fourth Annual 5K Run for Veterans at MacArthur Airport was the most successful race at the airport to date. A record-breaking 2,400 people signed up to participate as runners and walkers, and along with sponsorships from more than 100 companies raised over $120,000 for 9-1-1 Veterans. This local organization is dedicated to assisting Long Island veterans who are experiencing short-term emergencies, often as they struggle to cope with the difficult challenges of re-entering civilian life after serving in combat areas.

Operation Hold Fast The lessons that formed the basis for the book “Hold Fast” by Blue Balliett were not only weaved into the fabric of the curriculum in Kate Hunter’s fifth-grade class at Minnesauke Elementary School, but also the lives of the 21 students in her class. Following a unit of study on diversity and tolerance, the students read the 2013 novel and were immediately captivated by the characters in the story and the social issues detailed in the book. The book follows the life of a Chicagobased family who falls into the shelter system after becoming homeless. Its underlying messages focus on one’s need to hold onto his or her dreams in the face of adversity. Coinciding with their reading of the book, the students conducted research on the topic of homelessness and were startled to learn that there are currently 21,000 homeless children living in New York City. The students and Ms. Hunter began monitoring this number daily as they continued to read “Hold Fast” and were moved to make a difference in the lives of these youngsters. Garnering inspiration from the paper clip project

undertaken by a Tennessee middle school to understand the number 6 million, as attributed to the number of deaths from the Holocaust, Ms. Hunter’s class sought to collect 21,000 pennies as a visual representation of the number of homeless children in NYC. Because pennies

After an exhaustive search for ways to donate their collected pennies to help this cause, Ms. Hunter and the class connected with Mayor Michael Bloomberg during a call-in radio show on WOR-AM. After learning about the incredible work done by the class, the mayor’s staff helped coordinate the fifth-graders’ donation to benefit a shelter in Queens. Learning that going to school is a significant challenge for these homeless children, the students and Ms. Hunter also drafted messages of hope for the recipients and created a bulletin board creatively decorated with corresponding messages. When the author learned about how the students were moved into action by her book, she not only sent each class member a personalized signed copy of “Hold Fast,” but also pledged to donate copies of the story to the shelter receiving are often understood as a symbol of good luck, the class their monetary donation. The lesson served as a culmination of the students’ social studies curriculum. “Students researched their specific figures, noting important facts and turning points in the lives of their assigned person,” said Santini. “Using the data they had collected, they composed

biographical speeches that they recited for parents and other visitors at the museum.” Prior to the event, the fourth-graders read, listened to, analyzed and discussed important speeches in history to prepare their own.

Rotary Honoree Port Jefferson Middle School eighth-grader Alexa Wakefield was honored by the Port Jefferson Rotary Club this July as the Most Motivated Student of the Year. Alexa was selected to receive this distinction as well as the Annual Rotary Eighth-Grade Scholarship based upon her

unwavering commitment to community service. She has sold puzzle pieces, bracelets and more to raise funds to support a variety of causes, such as autism awareness and the local food pantry. “Alexa is an all-around great person,” lauded Port Jefferson Middle School

Principal and Rotarian Antonio Santana. “Her continuous efforts made her an easy selection to receive this distinction.” Alexa’s future plans include spearheading a special fundraising project that will benefit Hope House Ministries.
