Owners of stormdamaged rental properties that are located in areas outside of New York City and that were being utilized by rental tenants for full-time, year-round use at the time of the storm(s) are eligible to apply. These include singlefamily homes, townhouses, apartment buildings or any other legal dwelling. NY Rising funding may be used to finance repairs to real property or to

reimburse for repairs to real property, excluding landscaping or any element that is not part of the building. Priority is given to properties that offer affordable units – serving renters with income levels that fall below 80 percent of the area’s median income (AMI), as well as properties that sustained storm damage that still needs to be repaired. For example, on Long Island, the AMI is

$105,000 for a family of four in Nassau County. Property owners who have not started post-storm repairs are also given preference. Owners who have completed repairs and executed a contract before October 29th, 2013 may be eligible for reimbursement. Funds for this program come from a federal government disaster recovery appropriation to help the State of New York with unmet storm

recovery needs. The federal government requires the State of New York to ensure that applicants are not paid twice for repairs. Thus, any proceeds from another federal source, charitable source, and/or private insurance received for storm damage to the subject will be deducted from any eventual NY Rising award. Changing these variables around in any fashion would change the outcome of the problem. Similar situations occur in life all the time. To illustrate: If you look at the need to manage your retirement income so that you can’t outlive it as a “problem” to be solved, you will need to adjust some variables to arrive at the solution you seek. That’s why it’s so important you be aware of the key variables involved in your retirement income planning. What are some of these variables? Consider the following: Your investment mix — You might think that once you reach retirement, you can invest solely in income-producing vehicles, but you can’t forget about inflation. Even a low rate of inflation, such as we’ve had for a number of years, can seriously erode your purchasing power over time — which is why you need to consider owning at least some investments that provide growth potential. Of course, you can change your investment mix at any time: For example, you might want to shift to a greater percentage of income-oriented investments as you move deeper into retirement. Your withdrawal rate — You’ll need to calculate how much you can afford to withdraw from your investment portfolio each year without depleting it prematurely. Your annual withdrawal rate will depend on a few different factors — such as your projected longevity, your investment mix and your other sources of income — but you’ll want to be careful not to take out too much too soon. As was the case with your investment mix, you have the flexibility to adjust your withdrawal rate during your retirement years. Your Social Security — You can start collecting Social Security benefits as early as age 62, but your benefits will be permanently reduced by up to 30% unless you wait until your Full Retirement Age (FRA), which is likely 66 or 67. However, your monthly checks can increase if you delay taking your benefits beyond your Full Retirement Age, up to age 70. If you come from a particularly long-living family, and you have sufficient income apart from Social Security, you might want to delay your payments to get the larger benefit amount. Once again, you have a choice to make. Your earned income — Just because you’ve retired

Holes For Hope is a fundraising event that raises money for North Shore Autism Circle and Autism Speaks that was conceived around a kitchen table almost five years ago when a group of friends came together to support one of their own, with the hope of raising awareness and funds in response to the impact that autism has had on the local North Shore community. “Friends Helping Friends” – the guiding principle at the very core of this charity event – strives to bring together the Long Island community with a common goal: helping all those impacted by a autism spectrum disorder. This group of friends took one simple idea, added a lot of hard work and determination, sprinkled in a healthy dose of friendship, laughter and love, and shook it well to create a wonderful charity event that has been labeled

KICKING HUNGER - Suffolk County Legislator Steve Stern teamed with Island Harvest and Pronto of Long Island, Inc. to lead residents in a successful food drive on Saturday, July 12th, at ShopRite of Commack. The drive coincided with ShopRite’s “Can Can” sale, which helped residents fill four shopping carts with canned goods and other non-perishable items for their neighbors in need. The collection event netted 500 pounds of food and other household items, which were donated to Pronto of Long Island, Inc., a non-profit community outreach center serving Brentwood, Bay Shore, Central Islip and other neighboring communities.

I have a beach blanket; well, to be clear, it’s more of a moving blanket that has admirably served its purpose on the beach, the grass… pretty much anywhere it’s been needed over the last year and a half. Until last Monday. Last Monday, my friend and I decided to attend one of the many free summer concerts on the schedule this season at Massapequa’s John J. Burns Park. While the forecast called for rain and possible thunderstorms later in the evening, the concert remained set to go off. We arrived early, set up the aforementioned blanket and a couple of chairs, and waited. Light drizzle had begun to fall on and off at this point. Several local legislators appeared to make the

obligatory introductions on stage and stated that, due to the impending storms, the show would begin a bit earlier than scheduled. Perfect. Headliner Bret Michaels took the stage shortly after, and was greeted by an ecstatic crowd, most clutching their umbrellas in earnest, as the rain began to fall harder. About a half dozen songs in, the torrential downpour commenced. At that point, it became clear that, despite the best intentions, the show would simply not be able to go on. The house lights (or lampposts, as the case was) went up, the power to the jumbo screen was cut, and the crew desperately tried to cover the speakers and electronics as the mad dash to the parking lot began. Ah, but there still

remained the small matter of the blanket. The gigantic, now completely saturated, blanket, which now weighed approximately 50 lbs. as we attempted to roll it up and drag it to the parking lot – all the while trying to sidestep the massive mud puddles which had formed in a matter of minutes. As I contemplated chucking the entire thing into the nearest garbage pail, the absurdity of the whole scene suddenly struck me, and I became hysterical with laughter. “The next time they forecast ‘a chance’ of anything, let’s do ourselves a favor and leave the blanket in the trunk.” As I write this, four days later, the blanket remains draped over my deck, drying in the afternoon sun. It’s still a bit damp.

On June 25th, The Rotary Club of SmithtownSunrise presented Andrew G. Ratway, outgoing President, with the Paul Harris Fellowship Award at their installation dinner for new officers; Bart Dalli, President, Cara Vercellone, Vice President, Gary Schnirman, Treasurer, Otis Thornhill, Secretary, and Steve Stare, Sergeant at Arms were all installed. The Paul Harris

Fellowship is named for Paul Harris, who founded Rotary with three business associates in Chicago in 1905. The Fellowship was established in his honor in 1957 to express appreciation for a contribution of $1,000 to the humanitarian and educational programs of The Rotary Foundation. Those programs include an array of projects that save and invigorate the lives of people around the world and enhance international friendship and understanding. Foundation programs provide educational opportunities, food, potable water, health care, immunizations, and shelter for millions of persons. These activities are funded, implemented and managed by Rotarians

and Rotary clubs around the globe. Rotarians also designate a Paul Harris Fellow to recognize another person whose life demonstrates a shared purpose with the objectives and mission of The Rotary Foundation to build world understanding and peace. Making this presentation to Andrew was Otis Thornhill, Secretary. Also recognized at the Installation Dinner was Judy Marlow-Ratway, who was presented with a plaque of recognition for dedicated service providing the club with outstanding speakers and publicity, as well as public relations to promote club projects and awareness of Rotary for the years 2010 thru 2014. Congratulations to all!

Preserving Our Land Lately, there has been a lot of talk over the issue of environmental conservation. It is crucial to the well being of our ecosystem that we look after all of nature’s life. Maintaining the levels of all animals, big or small, is no easy task, but it must be done. In order to ensure a healthy, abundant environment for everyone, it is a necessity to undertake the protection of quite literally, everything. As someone who lives on Fire Island, I see everyday how deer, birds and even insects are affected by litter, pollution and the overall negative human impact. I also live within a

preservation on this little Barrier Island. Hurricane Sandy effectively cleaned the area out, giving way to the rise of many species that signal a healthy ecosystem. On this preservation, the frog population is beginning to flourish. This is a good thing because the presence of frogs have always meant a thriving environment teeming with food, vegetation and, most importantly, other healthy wildlife. Dolphins are becoming an ever present fixture on our seashore. Even with the ongoing sickness that the dolphins must endure, their populations seem to be doing well, especially this close to shore. A few weeks ago, a sea turtle

was spotted as well. These unprecedented sightings have signaled a positive change in the way we treat Mother Nature. Even as these animals are around now, it is crucial to their survival that we protect them. In addition to looking after ourselves, we should take care of the rest of Long Island’s wildlife. It took so many years. To dispose of it will be quite rough - at least for her in tears. For each treasured trinket is a sweet memory Of her youth, of her husband, and her children - there were three.

A sweet blue baby blanket from her first baby born. It may be frayed and tattered and just a little torn. She does not want to part with it for any price, you see. Though now adult, he’ll be her baby for eternity. So now she clings to each old thing feeling quite forlorn. For people gone now from her life, she still has to mourn. They will be coming with a dumpster and then the moving truck. She feels as if her life is now running quite amuck. She hurries to another pile and opens the next box. A blond curl tied with ribbon - it’s the second baby’s locks. Someone picks up an old knickknack and offers her ‘a buck.’ And now she feels as though she’s been truly struck.

You can’t keep all these things they tell her - there just isn’t that much room. The new place will be better for you; her heart fills with dread and gloom. Some photos in an album show her late husband in his youth, A letter to the tooth fairy and the third baby’s first little tooth. Roses pressed in a book to preserve their bloom, She remembers as a gift from her loving groom. She found things she had forgotten and didn’t know she had. Some things made her feel good; others made her sad. The clay handprint ashtray someone made in camp The high school woodshop project that had become a lamp. She found handmade greeting cards “To my Mommy and my Dad.” If this was better for her, why did it feel so bad? This was her life piled up outside, she wanted to declare. She was afraid of all the changes and moving now elsewhere. Don’t make me feel like I’m a problem - I’m your mother after all. Don’t be impatient with me or bothered when I call. She wanted them to know her feelings and to let her know they care. Please listen to me - my memories I need to share!
