Fire up those grills! Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is seeking volunteers from local organizations to cook BBQ lunch and dinner for campers throughout the course of the summer. The camp is dedicated to helping both physically and mentally challenged children and young adults and is proudly celebrating its 68th summer season. Volunteers are invited to cook on the following dates: Lunches: July 27th30th; August 10th-12th, 17th, 18th, 24th-27th, 31st; September 1st-3rd. Dinners: August 17th, 24th, 31st; September 1st, 2nd. Those who come to the camp will have the opportunity to serve lunch and dinner and spend time engaging with the campers. They will also be responsible for setting up before and cleanup afterwards. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp designed for children and young adults ages 6-21 with special needs. Its mission is to help children and adults achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education in a summertime environment. Kings Park – Owner of the well known Francesco’s Italian Restaurant of Bethpage, NY, passed peacefully in his Kings Park home on July 10, 2015. He was 85. Frank was born in Brooklyn, on Nov. 8, 1929. As a child, Frank resided with his parents John and Anna (Chiovaro) and with his siblings Thomas, John, Prudence, Lawrence, Nancy and Vito (all predeceased) in Franklin Square. Frank was a graduate of Sewanhaka H.S. (1947). During his High School years, Frank met the love of his life, Marguerite Wunder (Honey). In 1949 and 1950, Frank worked as an upholsterer for Peppait Brothers in Freeport. Frank was drafted into the US Army on Oct. 9, 1950. After boot camp, Marge traveled to Tennessee where they married on Nov. 15, 1950. Frank was then deployed and fought in active combat in the Korean War for 10 months. He was honorably discharged on Aug. 31, 1951. Frank earned a bronze service star awarded for heroic achievement in a combat zone. Once reunited, Frank and Marge lived for a short time in an apartment in Rockville Centre where they welcomed their first child Evelyn (Necroto). They purchased their first home in 1957 on N. Iowa Avenue in N. Massapequa. Frank joined the NYPD police academy but decided to follow his heart toward self employment. Frank tried his hands at several business ventures, eventually establishing Francesco’s Italian Restaurant in 1959. Frank’s three other children, Diane (Johnson), Dorrine (Lambert) and Frank Jr. were born in N. Massapequa. In 1970, Frank moved his family to South Huntington and celebrated the marriages of all his children there. Evelyn to Bartholomew Necroto; Diane to Edward Johnson, Dorrine to Jeffrey Lambert, and Frank Jr. to Gina (Bragino). Frank is blessed with the gift of 13 adoring grandchildren: Christina, John Paul, Christine, Matthew and Elizabeth (Evelyn and Bart); Edward, Trevor and Kyle (Diane and Edward); Joseph, Diana and Noelle (Dorrine and Jeff); Anna and Frank III (Frank Jr. and Gina). Frank is also blessed with six great grand children, Arianna, Dominick, (Christina Necroto); Andrew, Erica, and Kayla (Christine Necroto - Sciallo); and Beth (Matthew Necroto). Frank operated Francesco’s Italian Restaurant for 34 years, which became a popular destination for families and the local employees of Grumman. Frank served well over 1 million meals and truly enjoyed all of his patrons and employees. He often made sure that leftovers at the end of the night were made available to those in need of food. Frank retired from the restaurant business in 1995. Shortly thereafter, his wife Marge passed away. With the blessed newfound friendship of neighbor Andy Rainone, Frank became active in their local parish, St. Elizabeth’s, meeting with “the boys” (Andy, Ray, Tony, George, and other dear friends) to count the parish collection monies on Mondays. They frequently played cards and went out for meals together and other social events. Frank joined a Knights of Columbus travel group, and in 2000 made his long awaited, one and only trip to Italy. Frank had the glorious opportunity of seeing his holiness Pope John Paul II. This trip was a highlight for Frank as he reconnected with his heritage. In 2007, Frank sold his South Huntington home and moved to the Lakebridge Condominium complex in Kings Park. His skepticism about living in a condo complex quickly faded as he was welcomed by Carol, Diane, Hilde and other wonderful neighbors. They shared movie nights, pool parties, luncheons and holiday gatherings. Frank spent frequent relaxing afternoons with family and friends on his deck swinging on his swinging bench and chatting. Frank continued his connections with St. Elizabeth’s and “the boys”, and he also joined St. Joseph’s parish and made more friends there. Frank began serving as a volunteer for the Smithtown Senior Citizens department delivering “meals on wheels” to the home bound which he enjoyed doing for many years. Family was always of utmost importance to Frank, all his life spending quality time with his family and in his retired years, he continued to spend a large amount of quality time with his children and grandchildren; celebrating special occasions, sharing meals together, getaways, etc., but what he really cherished were the normal day to day impromptu visits and outings. A Great Patriarch and a Wonderful Role Model, Frank loved and cared for all his family and friends deeply and he will be greatly missed. Tens of thousands of children on Long Island face hunger. When schools are closed for summer, children have less access to nutritious meals as many rely on free or reduced school breakfasts and lunches. This is why Feeding America, the nation’s leading domestic hungerrelief charity, has selected Island Harvest Food Bank to receive a Hunger Free Summer grant funded by the ConAgra Foods Foundation to help provide more meals to children when they need them most, when school is out for summer. “The Conagra Hunger Free Summer grant allows us to provide more meals to children this summer, so they don’t have to worry about food, and have more time to run, play and be kids,” says Randi Shubin Dresner, President and CEO, Island Harvest. “We
are privileged to work with Feeding America and our partners at ConAgra Foods Foundation to combat childhood hunger on Long Island.” This summer, Island Harvest Food Bank is one of 23 Feeding America food banks in 15 states that will receive Hunger Free Summer grants, funded by the ConAgra Foods Foundation and distributed by Feeding America, to start new or expand existing summer feeding programs. These grants totaling $700,000 - ranging from $20,000 to $40,000 each - will allow the food banks to serve food in school libraries during the summer months, provide meals to kindergarteners at summer camp and deliver boxes of food to families in need and beyond. “Island Harvest has expanded its Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) to

Concert season continued for me last week with the Foo Fighters at Citi Field, a show I had been looking forward to, well, since before it was announced. For years, the band has been at the top of my “must-see” list, and they did not disappoint. Of course, no concert outing – any outing, really – would be complete without some sort of adventure, usually involving transportation. Up until the day of the event, there was the endless contemplation of whether to drive or take mass transit. Brave the roads with about 50,000 of
your closest, slightly drunk friends, all attempting to exit one venue at the same time vs. take your chances with the unpredictability of train schedules, while being prepared to kill about an hour or so on the platform waiting for the “extra” trains to arrive. It was a flip of the coin, and mass transit won this round. Well, sort of. After driving to the Great Neck train station in a brilliant attempt to catch the seven minute express to Citi Field, I spent what amounted to upwards of 20 minutes circling the station searching for a suitable parking spot – one not marked with indiscernible
fine print spelling out all the conditions required. Time well spent. Beyond that, all was smooth sailing. Until the mass exodus, that is. There’s nothing quite like waiting above the train platform with, oh, about 10,000 increasingly irate Foo Fighters’ fans as the minutes tick by, with no train in sight. Ten minutes, twenty, thirty… around the forty minute mark, just as the natives were becoming particularly restless, a massive cheer went up. A train had just pulled into the station. I’m pretty sure it was the loudest ovation of the night.

School Supply Drive The Town of Brookhaven Youth Bureau’s INTERFACE Back to School Supply Drive will begin on Monday, July 20th, and run until Monday, August 24th. Collection centers are located in the lobby of Town Hall at One Independence Hill in Farmingville and the Highway Department Facility located at 1140 Old Town Road in Coram. The Youth Bureau is asking for donations of pens, calculators, backpacks, notebooks, lunch boxes, folders, glue, binders and more. The supplies will be distributed to needy families who might otherwise not be able to provide them to their children before school begins. Last year, the Youth Bureau was able to collect enough supplies to help over 1500 children prepare for school.

On July 12th, the Miller Place-Mount Sinai Historical society to celebrate the 295th birthday of the historic William Miller House located at 75 North Country Road in Miller Place. All in attendance were treated to a birthday cake made to resemble the Miller House, which was backed and decorated by Amy DeRosa. On display was a special photo presentation which told the history of the house from 1720 to present. Members of the society, some dressed in historical outfits, were on hand to discuss the house’s rich history. The original owner of the land on which the William Miller House
was built, was William’s grandfather, Andrew Miller Sr. Andrew was born in England (1632-1717) and immigrated to America with his family when he was eleven. He was a cooper in East Hampton until he came to the area called Old Mans around 1670. Andrew Miller purchased approximately 105 acres from Brookhaven Town and built his home near the pond. Andrew Sr. deeded his home lot in Old Mans to his son Andrew Jr. in 1709. Andrew Jr., who had built his own home, died in 1716. The William Miller House was acquired by the Miller Place-Mount Sinai Historical Society in 1979 from the estate of Harry Millard, the last lineal
descendant of William Miller. The house consists of three sections: the middle room, built in 1720 is the original section, a second house that was attached to the west end of the house in 1750, and a third house that was brought to the site and added to the east end of the house in 1816. The Society restored the house in the early 1980s. Listing on the National Register of Historic Places enabled the eventual preservation and restoration of the structure. The Miller PlaceMount Sinai Historical Society maintains the 1720 William Miller House as a museum and the center for its many historically educational activities.
Three New Eagles
Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta recognized three new Eagle Scouts from Troop 7 at their recent Court of Honor at Sts. Philip and James Roman Catholic Church in St. James. James Burke and Mathew Whalen joined the Cub Scouts in first grade and Frank Coppola started with the organization in second grade. This September, they will all begin college. James Burke renovated the recreation room for students at the Guide Dog Foundation in Smithtown, whereby he built a custom entertainment center and purchased a new TV and Bose surround sound system for the students to enjoy during their downtime in order to
complete the requirements for his Eagle Scout award. For his Eagle Scout project, Frank Coppola built a 16-foot wooden fence and planted a flower garden at Angela’s House in Stony Brook, which is home to medically frail children, to be enjoyed by the residents, their families and visitors. Matthew Whalen wanted his Eagle Scout project to benefit the military so he cleaned and refurbished the American Legion Sherwood Brothers Post 1152 in St. James for the veterans. In addition, he framed and organized the collection of photos of various WWII events so they could be properly displayed along with the medals of the soldiers.
Legislator Trotta noted that Scout James Buke waited two years to celebrate the attainment of his Eagle Scout Award so that he could share the moment with his fellow scouts and friends Frank Coppola and Matt Whalen. “This decision by James to wait for his friends to celebrate together is a testament to what scouting is all about and their camaraderie and friendship. Because you all have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout this is something that will be with you for the rest of your lives and you will always be held to a higher standard because of this achievement,” said Legislator Rob Trotta.
Responding to an increased demand to supply supplemental food to children who rely on school lunch programs, but may not get enough to eat when school is in summer recess, Island Harvest Food Bank announces that it has expanded its Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) to 55 sites across Long Island. more than 175,000 meals are expected to be served to approximately 4,000 children participating in the program. “For most children, summertime is a relaxed, fun and worry-free time of year, but that is not the case for many” said Randi Shubin Dresner, President and CEO, Island Harvest. “Sadly, a good amount of children living on Long Island who rely on school lunch programs experience stress and anxiety and empty stomachs come summertime. That’s why it’s so important to educate parents on the programs and services that are
available to them.” According to Feeding America, the nation’s leading domestic hungerrelief organization, 62 percent of client households with children under the age of 18 reported participating in the National School Lunch Program, but only 14 percent reported having a child participate in a summer feeding program that provides free food when school is out. “This underscores the critical importance of summer feeding programs, while emphasizing the need for

After all of the competitors crossed the finish line to conclude their race, they were each awarded a participation medal for their dedication, endurance and compassion. The RTSNP is able to put these events together thanks to the help from tireless coaches like Steve Cuomo. Mr. Cuomo is the founder and President of the RTSNP and has also been the USA Track and Field Chair for Disabled Athletes since 2009. For over a decade, Mr. Cuomo has changed the lives hundreds of special needs children and adults through his work in the organization. Because of his unparalleled commitment and devotion, he was awarded the USA Track and Field President’s Award. Through the coaching expertise of Steve Cuomo, his students are able
to reach their fullest potential. 17 year-old Mikey Brannigan, a senior at Northport High School, is a part of the RTSNP and is coached by Mr. Cuomo. Mikey was diagnosed with Autism at a young age, but with the help of Mr. Cuomo, he was able to overcome his personal disadvantages. Mikey is one of the top high school runners in the nation and has a Cumulative GPA of 84. The skills he has able to develop through running have helped Mikey to prove to himself and to others that no obstacle is too great to overcome. Mikey is now working to fulfill his dream of representing the United States at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio Di Janerio, Brazil. This was all possible due to the guidance and opportunities given to him by the RTSNP. From drafting mock legislation to organizing their own press conferences, the Suffolk County Legislature’s 16 summer Pages, now midway through the inaugural two-month program, have gained extensive hands-on experience in the nuts and bolts of government. The summer Pages, local high school and college students, are each assigned to offices throughout the county, including those of the Clerk, Presiding Officer and individual legislators. There, they assist staff with day-to-day operations, including administrative support and constituent services. Each Friday, Pages gather at the William H. Rogers Legislature Building in Hauppauge, where they participate in workshops on government. The weekly programs are structured to mirror the lifecycle of the legislative process. Early in the program, Pages wrote legislation on issues of their own choosing, ranging from crime to women’s health. Pages then staged mock press conferences to publicize their bills, which will later be debated in mock committees. At the end of the summer, Pages will select a Presiding Officer and vote on their

Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, feeding one out of every 10 Long Islanders, has received a significant gift in the amount of $550,000 from the John and Janet Kornreich Charitable Foundation. The gift will be used to support Island Harvest Food Bank’s overall mission to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island, including support of Island Harvest’s portfolio of programs and
services that go above and beyond other standard feeding programs. “Our five-year, $550,000 commitment to Island Harvest recognizes the need for adequate nutrition for Long Islanders who are financially unable to meet that goal,” stated John Kornreich. “Amidst the relative prosperity of Long Island, is a hidden, 10% of the population, who are hungry for enough food - and the right food - for children and adults alike.”
“Close to 94 cents of every dollar contributed to Island Harvest is directed towards programs and services that have a direct impact on the local community, so this very generous contribution from the John and Janet Kornreich Charitable Foundation, is very important to Island Harvest Food Bank and will surely have a lasting impact on our organization and the Long Island region and the people who benefit from our important work,”
said Randi Shubin Dresner, President and CEO, Island Harvest. “On behalf of the entire Island Harvest organization, I would like to express our most sincere gratitude to both John and Janet Kornreich.” The John and Janet Kornreich Charitable Foundation gift of $550,000 to Island Harvest will primarily, but not exclusively, be used to fund a revamped IT infrastructure to support efficiencies in the
