Rocky Point School District Congratulates Class Of 2021

Members of Rocky Point High School’s Class of 2021 began the next stage of their lives at the district’s annual commencement ceremony on June 25. As the students proudly walked onto the school’s football field, the sounds of ‘Pomp and Circumstance’ greeted them. The ceremony began with a welcome from Principal Jonathan Hart,

who first thanked the students for their patience, understanding and trust in the year’s challenges and making it to this milestone. He then thanked administrators, board of education members, educators, parents and family members for the collective guidance and support along the students’ path to success.

With proud parents, siblings, friends, teachers, administrators and members of the board of education, the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Class of 2021 received their diplomas during the 127th annual commencement exercises on June 25. Principal Eric Haruthunian welcomed everyone to the momentous ceremony. Grace Keegan led in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the National Anthem, which was performed by valedictorian Peggy Yin. Words of wisdom and congratulatory remarks on the accomplishments of the students were offered by Superintendent of Schools

Jessica Schmettan, Mr. Haruthunian and parent speaker Dr. Stephen Rabeno, father of twin graduates Mattea Rabeno and Michela Rabeno. Dr. Rabeno shared an inspiring story of his daughters’ growing up in Port Jefferson and referred to Robert Fulghum’s “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten” as a reflection of the kindness and acceptance of students in the school community. Yin and salutatorian Massimo Cipriano shared memories with their fellow classmates and thanked family members and teachers for the continued encouragement for all students to succeed in the

small school community. Mr. Haruthunian then presented the Class of 2021 to Superintendent Schmettan and Board of Education President Ellen Boehm before inviting each student to the podium and highlighting their high school careers and future plans. He was assisted by Assistant Principal Kevin Bernier in handing out the diplomas. The students then stood and tossed their caps in the air in celebration of becoming the newest graduates of the high school. From the entire Port Jefferson School District and community, congratulations and best wishes to the Class of 2021.

Port Jefferson Students Nominated For TEENY Awards Four Earl L. Vandermeulen High School students have each been nominated for a Teeny Award, a recognition from the East End Arts Council, an organization that has been celebrating excellence in high school theater for almost two decades. These honors are the second consecutive year that Port Jefferson has been included in the awards. All four students were nominated in the category of Best Monologue Performance in a Video. Jade McGarrity was nominated for “Persephone,” Albert

Peterson for “Late to Work,” Mattea Rabeno for “Wonderful Scar” and Cassidy Worrell for “Elephant in the Room.” The school was also nominated in the Best Group Performance in a Musical Revue, both from the recent virtual production “PJ Voices, A Musical Revue,” and are “Getcha (Head in the Game)” and “You Can’t Stop the Beat.” The students work under the direction of and alongside the district’s theater director, Anthony Butera. “With all of the challenges we’ve all learned to overcome

this year, our students flourished in our musical and theater productions,” Dr. Michael Caravello, the district’s director of music and fine arts, said. “Not only did they engage with one another working virtually and in person, they shared their joy and creativity with others that have had positive effects throughout our schools and community.” The Teeny Awards Ceremony will be held on July 11 at the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center and via Facebook Live Stream.

The resilient and adaptable Ward Melville Class of 2021 officially marked the end of their educational journey in the Three Village Central School District during the annual commencement

exercises, held on the front lawn on June 28. The ceremony featured all of the traditional graduation aspects and provided families and students with the opportunity to celebrate this momentous academic

milestone. The graduates marched through the balloon arches as the Ward Melville Symphony Orchestra played “Pomp and Circumstance,” followed by the singing of the national anthem by Caitlyn

eloquent commencement speeches, imparting words of wisdom and collective sentiments about their hopes for the future. Allen explained that each one of the graduates “entered the pandemic as one person and came out as another.” He cautioned his peers to take care of themselves and said, “Be balanced in yourself and cautious in your words but remember that you are never alone.” Chana’s remarks focused on inevitable change and not knowing where the future lies. “In actuality, lasting change is often more gradual and is brought about through the actions of everyday people,” she said. “All of us – regardless of our future careers and trajectories – can make the difference in the world through the small choices that we make.” Prior to handing out the diplomas, Mr. Bernhard

gave out two special awards. John Woram was recognized for his bravery and courage in fighting cancer, while Connor Hughes was recognized for a perfect attendance award throughout all 13 years of school. Assistant Principal Vince Cereola then read the names of each graduate as they marched across the stage to receive a diploma from Mr. Bernhard to the cheers of family and friends. Class of 2021 representative Brooke Walters also led the class in the traditional turning of the tassels, marking the graduates’ transition to alumni of the Three Village Central School District. As the Ward Melville High School bell rang, the graduates tossed up their caps in conclusion of the ceremony and joined their family, friends and faculty for photos and to say thank you and farewells.

Bernhard defined the meaning of the word “try” as “to care and prepare,” all anyone can do in this world. “Ask yourself if you really tried the first time…. then come up with a plan to succeed,” Mr. Bernhard said. Attackman Joey Spallina of Mount Sinai High School, with four goals and four assists, and goalie Luke Lamendola of Northport High School, with 10 saves in the second half, were named co-winners of the James C. Metzger Most Valuable Player Award in Suffolk County’s 15-11 win over Nassau County in the Rising Seniors game of the 2021 Long Island Lacrosse Showcase. The game was held at Farmingdale High School on July 2 with the winning team capturing the inaugural Metzger Cup. Spallina and Lamendola received the MVP awards and coaches Larry Cerasi of Northport High School and Dom Denning of Sachem East High School accepted the game cup from former lacrosse

player, business owner and community contributor James C. Metzger. Cerasi (2003) and Metzger (1977) are recipients of the coveted annual Lt. Ray Enners Award that is presented to the outstanding Suffolk County high school lacrosse player. Several weeks ago, Spallina won the James C. Metzger Most Valuable Player Award at the Long Island Championships. For more than 10 ten years, the Long Island Lacrosse Showcase for boys attending public high schools has been recognized as the premier event that allows players to display their talent for college coaches. Players also compete for roster spots to represent their county at the Long Island Showcase Nassau versus Suffolk games and then regional competition.

This year, the Nassau versus Suffolk games introduced the Metzger Cup for the winning teams and the James C. Metzger Most Valuable Player awards for outstanding players. The cup at each of the four games – Rising Freshmen, Rising Sophomores, Rising Juniors, and Rising Seniors -was presented by the lacrosse, football and basketball standout at Half Hollow Hills East and lacrosse All-American at Hofstra University during the 1970s. Metzger, a lacrosse benefactor for youth, high school and college programs on Long Island, is founder and CEO of The Whitmore Agency, one of the largest independent insurance and financial firms in the New York metropolitan area with offices in Garden City.
