“Pomp and Circumstance” was in full effect on June 24, as Rocky Point High School celebrated Commencement for the Class of 2022. Each student marched out onto the football field in their cap and gown as visiting family and friends cheered them on. “The Star-Spangled Banner” was performed by graduating Rocky Point High School senior Brenna Kiernan. Principal Jonathan Hart welcomed everyone and explained that the first student speaker would be presented in a rather unconventional way. Exhortation Speaker Victor Hough’s speech was presented as a recording,

because he had already reported to his duties at the United States Air Force Academy. “Don’t worry, the administration is lying to you. I am just under the stage and not allowed out,” Hough joked, before addressing his classmates and their accomplishments. communities.” Hundreds of thousands of Long Island families struggle with hunger and food insecurity throughout the year. During the summer months, there is a significant reduction in food donations to local food banks, pantries and programs. Compounding the issue, children are not in school where they can receive free and reducedcost breakfast and lunch. In addition, the pandemic and increased inflation rate have further strained local food pantries and emergency feeding programs served by Island Harvest. Over the past two and a half years, the pandemic has put a significant strain on the supplemental food supply chain. In fiscal year 2020-2021, Island Harvest Food Bank distributed more than 18 million pounds of food – the equivalent of 15 million meals – to Long Islanders

facing food insecurity. That’s an 83% increase over fiscal year 2018-2019. “While summer is often a time of plenty for most of us, many Long Island families continue to struggle to put food on their tables,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest Food Bank. “Island Harvest Food Bank is once again pleased to team up with PSEG Long Island and Stop & Shop for the second annual Power to Feed Long Island food collection events this summer to help address the needs of Long Islanders who continue to struggle with food insecurity. We are exceptionally grateful to PSEG Long Island and Stop & Shop for their caring and generosity now and throughout the year.” PSEG Long Island also kicked off the campaign with a $1,000 donation. Combined with the Stop & Shop gift cards, these donations make up the first

PSEG Long Island, Island Harvest Food Bank and Stop & Shop has kicked off PSEG Long Island’s second annual Power to Feed Long Island summer-long food drive. Seven PSEG Long Island Power to Feed Long Island employee ambassadors, along with anti-hunger advocates and government officials gathered at the Stop & Shop in Massapequa to donate food and money, and call on Long Islanders to take action to support neighbors facing food insecurity. Continuing through the end of September, collection drives will be set up at several Stop & Shop supermarkets across Long Island, where community members can donate non-perishable food and essential care items. This year’s goal is to collect the equivalent of 30,000 healthy, nutritious meals for Long Island families struggling to put food on their tables. This goal recognizes Island Harvest’s 30th anniversary this year. “We are kicking off our second annual Power to Feed Long Island campaign with Island Harvest and Stop & Shop because hundreds of thousands of our neighbors still need our help,” said David Lyons, interim president and COO, PSEG Long Island. “Last year, PSEG Long Island’s Power to Feed Long Island created a venue for Long Islanders to help fight food insecurity, and they responded with bags, carts and trunks filled with thousands of pounds of food for their neighbors. Thanks to their generosity, we exceeded our 21,000meal goal in 2021. The Three Village Central School District welcomed the start of the 20222023 school year during the board of education’s annual organizational meeting on July 6. During the meeting, Susan Megroz Rosenzweig

and Vincent Vizzo were sworn in as the board’s new president and vice president, respectively, while Deanna Bavlnka was named district clerk pro-tem. New board of education trustee Jennifer Solomon and Mr. Vizzo,

who was reelected, were sworn into their new, three-year terms of office. In addition, Dr. Kevin Scanlon took his official oath of office as the district’s new superintendent of schools.

MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS CELEBRATE MOVING UP - The Rocky Point eighth grade moving up ceremony took place on June 23 and was a time for celebration. The students assembled before proud parents, teachers and district administrators to signal the start of the ceremony. Many students were individually recognized and presented with departmental awards of recognition and certificates acknowledging their outstanding character traits and community service efforts. Hampton Classic Horse Show To Host FEI CSI 5* And 2* Competitions

The Hampton Classic Horse Show, one of the country’s most prestigious hunter-jumper horse shows, will unveil new state-of-the-art all-weather footing in its Grand Prix Ring and a new schedule with FEI CSI 5* and 2* competitions when it returns for its 46th edition, August 28-September 4. The new CSI 5* status means an increase in prize money to more than $1 million, with $410,000 for the Classic’s featured Hampton Classic Grand Prix on Sunday, September 4. New all-weather footing in the Grand Prix Ring will allow for an expanded schedule featuring the 5* and 2* as well as some new divisions. “We are truly excited about hosting a CSI 5* and having the opportunity to expand our schedule,” said Shanette Barth Cohen, the Classic’s Executive Director. “Our new allweather footing enables us

to hold more classes in the Grand Prix Ring and our move to 5* status is sure to attract the best horses and riders from all across the country and beyond.” The Hampton Classic will host a live discussion on Clubhouse to discuss the new schedule and footing on Thursday, March 10 at 6:00 p.m. All are invited to participate. The footing is being installed by Travis Gould and his JTWG, Inc. It is engineered using the same state-of-the-art processes that were used for the new footing in the International Arena at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in Wellington, Florida and Tryon Stadium in Tryon, North Carolina, both of which have received rave reviews. The laboratory design and modeling of the footing for those “UltraCompetition” arenas was done by Bill Hawe, CEO of iEquiTek, LLC, who is

overseeing the project for the Hampton Classic. The state-of-the-art processes being employed for the Hampton Classic by this team will also be used for the 2023 Longines FEI Jumping World CupTM Finals in Omaha.

“I think this is fantastic news,” said seven-time Hampton Classic Grand Prix champion McLain Ward. “The Hampton Classic has always been one of our sport’s premier events, equal to any Five Star. Now with official Five

Star status plus its new footing that has proven at Wellington to be as good as there is, the Hampton Classic will solidify its position as one of the most outstanding events in the world.” Ultra-Competition arenas are an example of the most extremely fine-tuned riding surfaces. Utilizing lab measurements, coupled with comparisons in the iEquiTek database, formulae are developed to improve certain aspects of the peak performance. The speeds and heights of CSI 5* competitions in general make for a narrow aperture of what is acceptable, even in the best of conditions. CSI 5* competitions may be held in the rain, yet still demand 5* levels of performance. Bill Hawe, from iEquiTek said, “The Hampton Classic is to be commended for its all-in commitment to advancing the state-of-theart for performance, safety

and horse welfare. This helps change the sport for the better. We are very excited to partner with the Hampton Classic on this project.” The Grand Prix Ring is the centerpiece of the Classic’s six show rings. Longines is the Official Timekeeper for the Hampton Classic which will also be adding new divisions such as Low Adult and Children’s Jumpers, Low Adult and Children’s Hunters and 3’6” High Performance Hunters. This will allow some exhibitors who have never previously had the chance to ride at the Hampton Classic to do so. More details on this year’s schedule will be forthcoming soon. Photos of birdhouses designed and built by Chris Kelsch Chris Kelsch, born and raised in Stony Brook, creates incredible birdhouses, in a wide range of unique woods. He developed his distinctive style over years of education, experimentation, and adventures. Chris credits his shop teacher, Dean Jenkins, with inspiring his passion for woodworking. After serving in the military, Chris attended Delhi Technical College where he studied carpentry and woodworking. After college, Chris joined the team of woodworkers at Tanglewood Conservatories in Maryland where they design and build custom high-end conservatories and greenhouses from exotic hardwoods. His role was to focus on the intricate architectural aspects such as corbels,

pilasters and detailed window frames to house the stained glass windows. His fondness for exotic woods led him to discover a mill in Pennsylvania that provides Martin Guitar with beautiful rare woods. He also found amazing antique barn woods. When Chris retired in 2017, he started making bird, bat, butterfly and bee houses. “I enjoy creating safe houses for wildlife,” he explains. I love using rare wood and antique barn wood as they create solid birdhouses. The stability of these woods ensures a solid and quality house. I also appreciate how beautiful grains contrast with the patina of barn wood.” He noted that some of the barn wood he uses is 300 years old. “I am thrilled to be able to display my work at the Reboli Center,” Chris said.

Joe Reboli was a big part of my life as my older brothers were friends with him. In fact, my mother referred to Joe as her ‘other’ son. The Reboli Center is close to my heart, and all involved are beautiful people with a beautiful mission.” Lois Reboli, president and founder of The Reboli Center said, “I have known Chris a long time and love his work. His birdhouses are so beautiful and unique that it is a pleasure to sell his pieces in the Design Shop and to have him as our July artisan.” The Reboli Center is located at 64 Main Street in Stony Brook, and is open Tuesday – Saturday from 11am to 5pm and on Sunday 1pm to 5pm. Port Jefferson Offers Music Camp For Students Many Port Jefferson students take advantage of the musical offerings to keep up their skills on their respective instruments at the Summer Music Camp at Port Jefferson. Registration for the 2022 season, organized by the Port Jefferson School District Music and Fine Arts Department is in progress. The camp provides an

enjoyable and positive opportunity for beginning and advanced students to enhance their musical studies while meeting new friends and playing music together and offers several levels of musical training classes, including beginning band and string. There are also more advanced classes for current elementary and middle school band and

Educational Partnership: Earl L. Vandermeulen High School And Suffolk Sports Hall Of Fame

Earl L. Vandermeulen High School continues to add to its unique educational offerings and, with the input of one of its teachers and a multisport coach, will offer a sports history class in fall 2022 in conjunction with the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame. The program will be a distinctive opportunity for Port Jefferson students to learn about local sports history and provide them with unique experiences in the classroom, on researchbased projects and at Hall of Fame events. This is the first program of its kind in the 32-year history of the Hall of Fame, which serves to honor people and places of historic significance in Suffolk County. The course, developed by social studies teacher Mr. Bryan Vaccaro and approved by the Port Jefferson Board of Education and administration, will be augmented by lessons developed by Hall of Fame staffers who will line up guest speakers and work directly with Port Jefferson’s faculty on content creation

opportunities related to history, research and media. Mr. Vaccaro’s brother, Mr. Chris Vaccaro, serves as president of the Hall of Fame and was instrumental in forming the partnership with the school district. He cited Port Jefferson’s outstanding academic track record as a plus for the Hall of Fame to evolve its purpose and place on Long Island. Key aspects of the educational partnership • Curriculum and lessons: The Hall of Fame will work with the high school social studies department to create lessons and curriculum related to local sports history. • Guest speakers: Inductees of the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame will visit the class in person or via Zoom throughout the school year. • Induction attendees: Students will have the opportunity to attend the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame induction in June and help provide social media support, thus improving their media and sports business skills and understanding.

• Historic research projects: The class will research local places of sporting significance and make recommendations to the Hall of Fame on where to place future historic markers. • Inductee research projects: Students will research notable sports people and make recommendations to the Hall of Fame voting committee on potential future inductees. • Sports content creation: Student work and research will be featured on the Hall of Fame’s website and social media pages with faculty approval. “We are so appreciative of Brian Vaccaro’s vision and bringing this partnership to fruition with his research and resources,” Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Principal Eric Haruthunian said. “This is another exceptional opportunity to bridge our school and the greater community and certainly an exciting real-world educational experience for our students.”

Port Jefferson School District Congratulates Class Of 2022 The Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Class of 2022 received their diplomas during the 128th annual commencement exercises on June 24. The traditional Color Guard presented by members of the Port Jefferson Fire Department served as the backdrop for the ceremony. Principal Eric Haruthunian welcomed those in attendance and parents, siblings, friends, teachers, administrators and board of education members lauded the most recent alumni of the school district. Salutatorian Hugo Onghai recited from Carl Sagan’s

famous book, “Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space” and related it to graduating in 2022 and savoring every moment to come. Hugo shared appreciation for and thanks to many of the high school teachers as well as his fellow graduates. Hugo was followed by parent speaker Lisa Scannell who offered appreciation for her three children receiving their primary education in the Port Jefferson School District. Valedictorian William Wu shared memories with his fellow classmates and words of powering through and

overcoming the obstacles of the past few years. Superintendent of Schools Jessica Schmettan took the podium to thank and congratulate each student and the special partnership of families in creating a great education for the students. Mr. Haruthunian then presented the Class of 2022 to Superintendent Schmettan and Board of Education President Ellen Boehm. Each student walked to the podium to receive their diplomas while Mr. Haruthunian highlighted their personal achievements and postgraduation plans.

Saf-T-Swim Helps Families Splash Into Long Island Summer Safely With Water Safety Acronym Saf-T-Swim announced a series of water safety tips to help families prepare for a safe, fun summer in and out of the water. The guidelines embody the proud member of the Long Island community’s mission to empower children with life-saving swim skills and dedication to teaching water safety. Bobby Hazen, District Manager of Saf-T-Swim and founder of End Drowning Now, says: “More than 90% of pool drownings happen at home involving young children while a caregiver was present. Swimming lessons, fencing, locking ladders, proper pool covers, and alarms can help this. Sadly, drowning statistics across the country have dramatically increased because of the pandemic, as there have been more pools installed and more distractions.” As summer approaches, the local swim school urges parents and families to practice the following water safety tips from the Saf-TSwim, Think Water Safety, Think S.P.L.A.S.H. guideline: S = Swim Lessons. It is imperative to teach children and caregivers how to swim and learn basic safety instructions. Swim lessons are an essential tool for helping children

learn life-saving skills year-round. In addition to providing fundamental knowledge and techniques, children also gain confidence while learning to love and respect the water.
