Veterans Salute Gala Continued From 3 associates and employees. Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage enjoys a long-standing and accomplished volunteer association with Beacon House and its mission of service to Long Island’s homeless veterans and their families. This past spring, over 125 volunteer sales associates from offices across Long Island and Queens formed teams that spread across Beacon House’s housing sites and performed intensive house cleanups at seven sites for Coldwell Banker Annual Volunteer Day. Many of Coldwell Banker’s affiliated sales associates continue their relationship with the residence by providing holiday gifts and home cooked meals. This project is being followed by the commitment with an island-wide Hometown Heroes Linen Drive to collect 700 sets of new linens and bedding for homeless veterans living in Beacon House’s 34 sites. The Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage regional offices are the collection centers. The individual responsible for spearheading the volunteer activities of 700 sales associates in 15 regional offices by Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage on Long Island and Queens, NY is Laura L. Students in the Eastern Suffolk School of Practical Nursing, sponsored by Eastern Suffolk BOCES, organized a book drive for the students at Westhampton Beach Learning Center (WHBLC). Over 100 gently used books were donated to the school library. WHBLC services students with learning and behavioral disabilities. “Practical Nursing

students have the opportunity to visit WHBLC for both their pediatric and psychiatric clinical rotations,” said Marie Stevens, administrative coordinator. During the psychiatric rotation, Practical Nursing students observe student behaviors, identify and use therapeutic communication techniques, identify symptoms of various

disorders, as well as participate in medication administration under the supervision of Practical Nursing Instructor, Lisa Jeran. “Nursing students examine the sociocultural and ethical issues that impact the population of students at WHBLC while creating and maintaining a safe and therapeutic milieu,” said Stevens.

Camp Sunshine Fundraiser On Thursday, July 28th, from 6 to 9 p.m. at The Meadow Club in Port Jefferson Station, Tropical Smoothie will be hosting a Masquerade Murder Mystery dinner as a fundraiser for Camp Sunshine. Tickets, which cost $40 each, include a full sit down dinner and dessert as well as a costume mask. Prizes will be awarded to those who are able to solve the murder mystery and to those who participate in the raffle and Chinese auction. All proceeds from the fundraiser will be donated to Camp Sunshine.

“The Masquerade Murder Mystery dinner is a very creative and fun way to raise money for a great cause,” says Legislator Anker. “People of all different ages can attend this event, and all proceeds will help children who are affected by life threatening illnesses.” Camp Sunshine is an organization that sends families with children suffering from lifethreatening illnesses on a retreat to Maine. The retreat allows the families to relax and enjoy themselves free of charge.

Medical and psychological care is provided along with support from the staff and other families. The goal of Tropical Smoothie’s Masquerade Murder Mystery dinner event is to raise $10,000 for Camp Sunshine. Tickets can be purchased online or at Tropical Smoothie Café Port Jeff. My Secret Life With all the fuss over this new film, “The Secret Life of Pets,” I thought it only appropriate to provide my own account of this socalled hidden existence we all allegedly cultivate when our humans are away. First off, (spoiler alert) I have never taken to the sewers or made my way to Brooklyn looking for adventure. No, my exploration is confined to the four corners of my aquatic kingdom, where I examine every leaf of my plant and inspect each piece of gravel daily; you know, just to see if anything has changed overnight. While my human feeds me twice a day, I must say the time between meals could be a bit closer. What she does for all those hours in between, I’ll never know. I’ve often thought

I would like to tag along, but the pet store told her I might be susceptible to something called “motion sickness” in the car. Since I can’t go along, I do my best to entertain her whenever she enters the room, in the hope that she might linger just a bit longer. I perform my tricks for her, everything from diving for flakes the moment she drops them in the tank to giving little “love pecks” on her finger when she even so much as touches the water. Sometimes it works, and she’ll stay and have her cereal while perched on the counter next to me; but most times, it’s just some nonsense about “running late” and “see you later Buddy.” The only quality time my human and I have is when she’s busy cooking.

Then, I have a front row seat to all the pretty preparation. Honestly, my life is fairly dull and repetitive, not exactly the stuff of fine cinema. Well, except for that one time with Squeegee the Snail – but I digress. Mostly, it’s a lot of laps and fanning my fins to see if they’ve grown back sufficiently (still a work in progress, but coming along nicely). Too bad I couldn’t tag along for the movie. Maybe I’ll catch it on TV when it comes around. Hope my human still has that portable bowl for me to travel in. I do miss sitting on the coffee table watching the ball game… and sitting on the dining room table watching everyone eat… Boy, I do a lot of watching, don’t I? Maybe they should make a movie about that.

Since its inception 13 years ago, the Jefferson’s Ferry Annual Photography Contest has celebrated stunning images captured by its residents and staff. This year, the Town of Brookhaven is recognizing 13 years of Best in Show work with a special exhibit at its Town Hall. Among the Best in Show exhibit are landscapes and nature photography, many from foreign lands, as well as portraits of people and companion animals. On June 20th, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilwoman Valerie M. Cartright met with residents of Jefferson’s Ferry Lifecare Retirement Community to tour the Town Hall exhibit. Each year, the winning entries are

enlarged, framed and hung throughout the halls of Jefferson’s Ferry to be part of its living history. Barbara Strongin, Jefferson’s Ferry resident and chair of the exhibit committee, commented on the positive effect the photography contest has on the residents and staff. “Thirteen years of photos have not only added beauty to our facility, but have also told the story of our residents’ lives. The photos are both our history and our legacy.” The contest, which is organized by a dedicated group of Jefferson’s Ferry residents, has become a well-loved institution within the Jefferson’s Ferry. Each year as many as 300 photos are submitted by 40 to 45 residents and

a few staff members, some of whom are novices and others more experienced photographers. Submissions are judged by committee. The judges for this year’s contest, for example, were Jefferson’s Ferry President and CEO Bob Caulfield, East End Film and Digital Corp photographer Tony Lopez and Gallery North Executive Director Judith Levy. “Our photo contest is extremely popular and every year we look forward to the many beautiful and creative entries from our residents and staff,” said Bob Caulfield. “Some photos are reflective of places travelled, others of family members ... they all tell a story in their own unique way.”

Championship Golf Ward Melville High School’s varsity golf team scored a hole in one this season as they were named Suffolk County and Long Island Team Champions

for the second consecutive year. In addition to this group accomplishment, Gerald Mackedon was named the Boys Golf Individual

Suffolk County Champion and was the runner-up at the state championship by one stroke.

A beachfront stroll down the Jones Beach Boardwalk will take place on Thursday evening July 21st at 6 p.m., hosted by the Long Island Health Collaborative. There is no event fee, parking fee, or registration. The Sunset Stroll will highlight walking as a simple and easy way to include exercise and healthy habits in a busy lifestyle. Toy Drive a Success

As part of Military Child Month, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker partnered with Legislator Steve Stern and Patriot Guard Riders to host a toy drive at her office in Mount Sinai. The toy drive benefitted children of veterans, reservists, and active duty servicemen and women. Over 20 new, unwrapped toys were collected throughout the months of May and June.

“As the daughter of a disabled Navy veteran and Vice Chairwoman of Suffolk County’s Veterans Committee, it is an honor to support our servicemen and women and their families,” said Legislator Anker. The Patriot Guard Riders is a national notfor-profit organization dedicated exclusively for charitable and community services purposes. The

members are committed to helping military families and ensuring dignity and respect at memorial services honoring fallen military heroes, first responders, and honorably discharged veterans. State Commander

This past weekend, Legislator Tom Muratore attended an event in honor of Dennis Sullivan at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4927 in Centereach. Dennis was recently elected VFW Commander of New York, the highest elected post in the state. To commemorate the occasion, Legislator Muratore presented Dennis with a proclamation. Mr. Sullivan joined the VFW in 1984 at Post 4927

in Centereach, where he is a Gold Legacy Life Member. He has served in many elected and appointed positions at the Post, County, District, Department and National levels. His special project is the Recycled Rides Car Program. As of today, 81 cars have been given to needy veterans. Dennis also serves on the veterans review board, giving away free homes to veterans returning from

Afghanistan and Iraq. “I consider myself fortunate to represent the community where Dennis Sullivan is active-he does more for veterans than anybody I know,” stated Legislator Muratore. “It is a privilege to call Dennis my friend, and I congratulate him on his newly elected and well-deserved position as Commander of New York State.”
