The End. {Part II} Approximately 5 hours later… Finally, the end was upon us, the grand lighthouse on the hill. Having missed the hours of operation due to our detours en route to Montauk Point, we didn’t have the opportunity to browse the gift shop or climb the tower this time around, although our prior experience with the latter had been, shall we say, less than impressive. While the Fire Island Lighthouse boasts a circular terrace to walk around the top and enjoy the scenic views below, Montauk has more of a ladder jutting up through a small hole in the ceiling, where, if you’re lucky, you can climb two steps - not even to the top - and poke your head out for a split second. Not exactly a full-service “tour,” to be sure. Far more exciting are the rocks surrounding the base of the building, providing picturesque views of the Atlantic Ocean as its waves crash along the shoreline. On any given day, you can find tons of people carefully navigating the giant boulders as they make
their way from one side to another. Children, pets, senior citizens… all seem drawn to this spot. From there, we took a drive to several of the private beaches to scope out a nice sunset view. Navy Beach, Outer Beach… all were dotted with signs indicating the fines due if you dared park without the prestigious East Hampton town beach pass. How strictly was this rule enforced after dusk? We didn’t know; but, as the sun began to reach its golden hour, we decided it was worth the risk. And so, we found a rock wall to perch on overlooking the water, and we waited (one eye on the parking lot at all times, of course). Once the last rays had dissipated, we headed into town, the town which had been practically closed down during the last of our pilgrimages. What a difference the summer season makes. Restaurant after restaurant, outdoor patios bustling with music and people enjoying cocktails, stores filled with novelty items and “beachy” merchandise, a summertime
By: Jamie Lynn Ryan paradise to be sure. As the clock ticked to approximately 10 p.m., we of course decided we were slightly hungry once again, and in need of just a small snack for the road. After eventually being seated at one of the aforementioned outdoor patios, we settled in to people watch. Little did we know that the most fascinating spectacle would be surrounding our very own table. On the one side, a young woman argued vehemently with the manager over her credit card charge, demanding it be reversed immediately. On the other, a family with several children was finishing up their meal, when I heard the unmistakeable commotion of a child getting sick, right in the leftovers bag. His darling siblings gathered ‘round to witness the spectacle, while the parents, seemingly unaffected by this, remained calmly seated at the table, finishing their cocktails. Check, please! And that, ladies and gentlemen, was The End of The End for us for that evening. ’Til next time.

The hope is by now you are familiar with the website www. honorflightlongisland.org It’s your go-to site for Guardian and Veteran applications which are available to print and share, especially now that they’re recruiting Korean War veterans for their flights. They’re still taking WWII veterans of course! They also post photos and videos from each flight and let you know when the next flight is scheduled on the website. They try to make it easy to use, particularly the donations pages! Help yourself to the photos. They’re free to download. Copy as many as you’d like for yourself or friends and family. The May 6th Honor Flight had 20 WWII veterans and 30 Korean veterans on board. Those photos and videos are

The Long Island Association of Special Education Administrators (LIASEA) held their annual awards luncheon recently at Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. LIASEA is a group of special education administrators who are responsible for programs and services in public and

Brookhaven Grad John Edwin Rose of Brookhaven recently graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point. Rose earned a Bachelor of Science degree and an officer’s commission in the U.S. armed forces. He also earned a Merchant Marine officer license, qualifying him to serve as an officer on any ship in the U.S. flag merchant marine. The United States Merchant Marine Academy is a federal service academy
that educates and graduates licensed Merchant Marine officers. In addition to the rigorous academic and physical requirements for admission, applicants must be nominated by their Congressman or Senator. All USMMA graduates earn both a B.S. degree and a merchant marine license and incur an obligation to serve the United States. The U.S. Flag Merchant Marine – manned by U.S. merchant mariners – is essential for securing the country’s commerce in
peacetime and delivering warfighters, weapons, and military supplies in times of conflict. The majority of “Kings Pointers” will serve as Navy reservists in the Strategic Sealift Officer Program while working aboard U.S. flag vessels; others will serve on active duty in our nations’ armed forces. As part of his four year education, Rose spent one year training as a cadet aboard ocean going vessels.

On Tuesday, June 13th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker attended the installation of the rain garden at the Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School. In conjunction with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County (CCE), the fourth grade students planted native plants that will help collect rainwater from buildings, parking lots, sloped lawns, and paved roadways. The plants will then trap and filter out pollutants from entering our groundwater. “Protecting our groundwater is one of my top priorities, and should be a priority for all residents
in Suffolk County,” said Legislator Anker. “The rain garden program is a great way to educate our young students about the negative effects of pollutants on our drinking water. Thank you to Cornell Cooperative Extensions and the Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School for their efforts on this project.” With the help of CCE, rain gardens are being planted at schools across Suffolk County as part of the stormwater management program to minimize the impact of harmful and polluted stormwater runoff. Suffolk County’s stormwater management program is a collaboration

Ward Melville Heritage Organization donated a boulder from the historic Mount House with a bronze plaque that reads: Erik Halvorsen Our Arborist…He Cared 1971-2016 “Oak K” The area selected for the placement of the tree and plaque (next to the Jennie Melville Gardens) was done so not only for its beauty and peacefulness but because of Erik’s help with
revitalizing that area and the entire Village Green. Three Village residents made donations toward the project and their generosity exceeded the original cost. That balance was given to Erik’s widow, Britt Halvorsen. There are only three other plaques on the Village Green. One is dedicated to Jennie Melville and the other two to Ward and Dorothy Melville.

Spurring Interest in the Arts
Art can enrich the lives of people young and old, male and female. The arts can introduce adults and children to different cultures and traditions,
while also helping them to develop more fully as human beings. While some may feel the benefits of the arts cannot be measured, the nonprofit
organization Americans for the Arts notes that kids who are involved in the arts are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement than kids who
are not involved in the arts. And though mathematics and science may not be the first thing people associate with the arts, kids involved in the arts are four times more likely to participate in math and science fairs than kids who are not involved in the arts. Parents can do a lot to make art a bigger part of their kids’ lives. The following are some simple ways parents can bring more art into their kids’ lives, courtesy of Americans for the Arts. Join in the fun. Parents can make art more fun for kids by playing music around the house and singing and dancing alongside their youngsters. In addition, read a book to or with your children and join in when they pursue other artistic endeavors, such as drawing or
painting. Find local events. Many school districts have slashed their arts budgets in recent years, but parents can still find local arts events for kids in their communities. Peruse the local newspaper and other community-based periodicals for cultural events for kids. Support local theater groups by attending performances with your children and explaining to them that the performers live in the community just like they do. Pitch in with local arts organizations. Local arts organizations typically rely on donations and volunteers to support their programs. Parents who want to instill a love of the arts in their children can help local organizations’ fundraising efforts and
even volunteer their time if the opportunity presents itself. If possible, take kids along when volunteering so they can get some firsthand experience with the arts. Encourage kids’ artistic pursuits. Some kids may decide to pursue artistic endeavors on their own, and parents can encourage such pursuits. Celebrate kids’ participation in artsbased activities in school and in the community, recognizing their hard work in the same way you would acknowledge their successes in the classroom and in sports. The arts can benefit youngsters in various ways, but it’s often up to parents to instill a love of the arts in their children.
Councilwoman Jane Bonner has announced that the Town of Brookhaven will co-sponsor the annual Jake Engel “Hoops for Hope Barbecue” basketball tournament at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai on Saturday, August 4th, from 4 to 8 p.m. The fundraiser is a barbecue and friendly basketball tournament designed to bring together a community that has been hit hard by the heroin epidemic, to raise money for a scholarship in Jake Engel’s name, and to raise
money for Hope House Ministries. The fundraiser was established in 2015 after Jake Engel’s death from a heroin overdose. The event is free to all and includes a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, barbeque style food, games, raffles and music. Councilwoman Bonner said, “Heroin addiction has destroyed so many lives in our community and it’s a growing threat to our young people. The Engel family and Father
Frank have shown us that we cannot just stand by and watch it happen. Awards Luncheon Held The Long Island Association of Special Education Administrators (LIASEA) held their annual awards luncheon recently at Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. LIASEA is a group of special education administrators who are responsible for programs and services in public and private schools or agencies. Their meetings provide
invaluable opportunities to dialogue with others who possess experience with and knowledge of the issues that challenge special education administrators, teachers, and parents. At this year’s awards luncheon, LIASEA honored educators and students alike. The Awards of Distinction were presented to Brian McIlvain, Director of Employment

Pink Aid Grant The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is the recipient of a grant from the Pink AidLI Chapter. This grant helps fund the salary of a bilingual social worker who provides counseling, patient navigation and support services at Nassau University Medical Center and the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program to uninsured and underinsured Nassau and Suffolk County patients diagnosed with breast cancer. The grant also allows the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program to support non-medical emergent needs for uninsured or underinsured Nassau and Suffolk County patients
and their families while undergoing treatment and/or post-operative care for breast cancer. These services include transportation to and from treatment, wigs and other prosthesis, grocery cards and assistance with household bills. “Pink Aid is proud to support the important assistance offered by Adelphi’s Breast Cancer Program and the bilingual social work and navigation services they provide. We are so pleased that our funding will allow critical support to reach even more women on Long Island,” says Ali Mitchell, the president of Pink Aid Long Island. The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer
Hotline & Support Program, established in 1980, offers free emotional support and information for breast cancer patients, professionals and the community. The hotline can be reached at 800.877.8077. Pink Aid’s mission is to help underserved local women survive breast cancer treatment with support and dignity, to provide screening to women in financial need, and to empower breast cancer survivors to heal by helping and inspiring others. Volunteers Needed The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program seeks breast cancer survivors of all ages, race and ethnicity--men as well as women--to become volunteers. Thus, the program seeks a diverse group of volunteers to reflect the diversity of the people who are calling the hotline.
The three-day training program will take place on consecutive Tuesdays - September 12th, 19th and 26th, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Adelphi University in Garden City. This indepth training includes presentations by nurse navigators and social workers on basic breast cancer education, active listening skills, and tips on
